Goodbye to 'Eco-Nightmare' Dick Pombo

By David Roberts, Grist.org. Posted November 8, 2006.

Another reason to get happy: The anti-enviro Rep. Richard 'Dick' Pombo (who embodied the cozy corruption of the 109th Congress) is no more.

Rep. Richard 'Dick' Pombo is a Rep. no more.

We bring you a special Grist tribute to the man who dreamt at night of shoving oil drills down the throats of endangered species.

[Tune to "The Way We Were" rises in background ...]

Ah, Dick. Remember when you tried to sell off drilling rights in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to fund transportation pork? That was insane funny. You always did have a sense of humor.

Who could forget your Ahabian quest to gut the Endangered Species Act? You were like the bad guy from a cheap horror movie, springing to life again and again. Points for persistence!

Then there was the time you put out a report saying mercury's not really so bad for you after all. Again, batshit insane completely hilarious. You cracked us up, Dick.

You also found your Will to Drill unduly restrained by NEPA, the nation's cornerstone environmental law, so you tried to gut that too. That was when you convened those Potemkin, hand-picked "task forces" -- no greens allowed! Good times, good times.

Speaking of drilling: when you couldn't get your tumescent drill into the Arctic Refuge, you turned to the nation's sloppy seconds -- offshore coastal areas. You were like some horny middle-aged businessman, drunk in a bar on a business trip -- you just couldn't keep your hands to yourself.

We always had to keep an eye on you, you scamp! Remember when you snuck in that provision altering some obscure mining provision? Oopsie -- there go tens of millions of acres of public lands!

From the beginning, you never really believed that anyone would seriously challenge you for your seat in the House. A good ol' boy like you? Look at those boots! Why, it was unthinkable. You laughed it off, and barely deigned to campaign or speak to the press for the past year. Even when Jerry McNerney -- a guy you thought you could steamroll without breaking a sweat -- started nipping at your heels, you refused to engage. Woops.

You embodied the cozy corruption, utter fealty to big industry, and mendacious faux conservatism of the 109th Congress. And now? Now you're gone.

Bye, Dick. You won't be missed.

Digg!

And we finally have a breath of FRESH AIR. Jerry McNerney rocks! We had a great campaign in this district with so many devoted hard working people knocking on doors, calling on the phone and WE DID IT!!!! It was a GrassRoots, NetRoots effort.
Back to your dairy now Pombo. BYE BYE and GOOD RIDDANCE!

Penis Pombo was a dick -
mean and bent and pretty thick.
Fuzzy Wuzzy lost his homey forest.
(Doesn't rhyme? THAT's not the crime!)

Penis Pombo wrecked a Park for tickled peckers.
The prickled public sent him packing.

And he is anti-abortion too, along with his hatred of California's unique environment.
As a Californian I could not be more pleased to see this shitbag from hell sent packing.
GOOD RIDDANCE!!

Even as a skeptic of human-caused climate change, I recognize Mr. Plumbo as just a bag man for polluters.

Ok, so when will the McCain-Lieberman bill on climate change reach Bush's desk so he can veto it? Ironically, Bush might sign it and convert into a Greenie, like he became a big Education and Medicare advocate when Congress passed those bills.

Watch how enough Dems get bought off by energy companies to scuttle the McCain-Lieberman bill. (Sorry to bring Joe's name up, I know most of you think he is worse than Himmler. But gosh darn it, Joe is pro-environment, or is his vote no longer valued because he sent JP Morgan heir Neddie Lamont back to Wall St.?)

one to go. I used to live in Modesto and was involved with the SPCA of Stanislaus County. Several months before the '02 midterm election the HSUS sent some of their staff from DC to conduct a meeting with animal rescue groups in Pombo's district. Apparently he had been trying to legalize pit bull and cock fighting in his area. Unfortunately none of the rescue groups in his district showed up so there wasn't much we could do. Fortunately his efforts came to naught. In my view sending back to his dairy farm is too good for him.

The news of his timely departure from the Resources Committee, and in fact from any governing office, is truly news we can all use. Removing a true enemy of the natural and wild places in America makes this moment all the more powerful and historic. Cheers!

Thank you Dick Pombo for President Schwarzenegger

Now Pombo can return to his family's true calling: bulldozing California's fertile central valley to make way for an exurban Republican majority that will deliver Arnold Schwarzenegger into the White House in 2012.

Republicans never die, they just latch on to a new machine.

Pombo losing his seat is the best thing that ever happened. Good ridance, adieu, too-d-loo. How he managed to stay in power for so long is a mystery to me. The refucklicans' deck of cards is getting thinner and thinner.

If Only Doolittle Was Gone, Too

We in the 4th District came within 3 percentage points of ridding ourselves of Pombo's equally evil colleague, John Doolittle. Charlie Brown lost by only about 7,200 votes, which is really heartbreaking. However, I'm proud to say that my county-Nevada County-actually went for Brown by a 53 to 41 percent margin. This amazed me since this county is full of rabid conservatives, for the most part. I guess people around here didn't take well to the fact that he told us to "hire a lobbyist" if we wanted to get his attention!
Actually, I think Doolittle is a hundred times worse than Pombo. At least he is now part of the minority party and let's hope that this fact stops him from doing any more harm to our country.

Not only did we get RID of Pombo, McNerney ain't half bad

I met Mr. McNerney at a small gathering in Stockton (about 30 people) and he was thoughtful, affable, and coherent. Imagine my shock-- after years of listening to Pork Barrel Pombo, the Darth Vader of the environment--to hear someone advocating alternative energy systems to help cut our oil addictions.

I shook Mr. McNerney's hand, wished him well, but just didn't have the heart to tell him he had no chance against the darling of all the developers, pesticide companies, oil companies, polluters, etc.
