Indigenous Canadians Fight for the Tar Sands
Clayton Thomas-Müller is an environmental and indigenous rights activist. One of his current projects is fighting against the proposed Keystone XL Pipeline that would carry tar sands oil from Alberta, Canada across the Midwestern United States to Texas refineries.
The Indigenous Environmental Network co-organized a rally to protest Keystone XL, following the high-visibility U.S. protests in Washington, D.C. earlier this year. Despite assurances from TransCanada that the pipeline will pose little environmental risk, the company's track record does not inspire confidence in citizens concerned about its impact. The Keystone 1 Pipeline, which was put into action June 2010, has experienced more than a dozen leaks in its first year of operation.
Thomas-Müller says there is "no greater example of the unsustainable path this country has set upon than the Canadian tar sands," and that we "have a moral imperative to stand up and fight for the sacraments of mother earth and guarantee our children and our children's children will have access to the same natural wonders and beauty."
