How Angelina, Bono, Gisele and Madonna Are Destroying the Planet

By Vanessa Richmond, The Tyee. Posted July 17, 2009.

The carbon emissions of Bono's band's world tour are equivalent to the waste created by 6,500 average British or Irish people in an entire year.

Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

What if celebrity news carried its own version of a nutrition label? But instead of calories, or health risks, how about a label that gets at celebrities' impact on the planet?

Imagine if each time a tabloid or movie or TV show fed our celebrity addiction by running the image of Angelina, Bono or Gisele Bundschen, they also were required to put the celeb's eco-footprint in the corner of that image? If the tabs really wanted to knock themselves out, they could also run a kind of eco-ingredient list -- the number of hours the celeb spends in the air, the square feet of housing she owns, number of children he has, and so on.

It's an idea with real timeliness, if I do say so myself. A few weeks ago, uber-feminist Naomi Wolf praised Angelina Jolie's independence, symbolized by her ability to fly her own plane, without even mentioning that if every woman did that, we'd need a million planets worth of resources to support the human population.

Flying High

Wolf is far from alone. This week, the top story in several tabs was that Jolie has resumed "one of her favourite hobbies...flying lessons!" without making any comment about the relative impact on the planet of flying to, say, knitting or karate.

People Magazine ran a piece about how pregnant supermodel Gisele Bundschen is "constantly traveling" (what a good earth mother). John Travolta owns his own specially outfitted 707 jet.

And the Daily Mail ran a piece about how Victoria and David Beckham were in the Seychelles one day, then Heathrow, then LA the next. How smoggy their designer footprint must be!

But these stories, and most others, tell us nothing of the impact of celebs' enviable lifestyles.

Most celebrities are using the green movement as a marketing gimmick the same way they use religeon. Yeah they have a good time telling us regular people what assholes we are, and everyone needs to invest in virtually unaffordable green products . . . everyone but them that is.

This article is the other bookend for the shorter showers article on Monday

The shorter showers article argued for the importance of personal political impact over personal physical impact.

This one highlights personal over political impact.

Both need to be balanced.
Otherwise people tend to think, "something smells but my shit doesn't stink."

i dunno, man. Bono does a lot of good shit around the world. And they put on a fantastic show, what can i say.

I think this goes along the lines of the whole "what can you do as a personal consumer to reduce your carbon footprint." the truth is, not much. some, to be sure. doesn't hurt to be conscious. but if i've got to waste water rinsing out my milk cartons, we're kind of fucked either way. citizen-consumer carbon pollution accounts for about 3% of all atmospheric pollution, according to Thom Harmann the other day (or was it all pollution, i don't remember). so we can all do our happy horseshit with recycling (a great idea, don't get me wrong), but if we can't get giant ass agricultural corporations stop funneling pigshit into rivers and blowing up mountaintops and cutting down the rainforest, well, again, we're pretty much fucked on that front. and the thing is, all of that is political. we can petition, we can lobby, we can protest, but if we don't put the people in office who 1) GET IT and 2) have the sack to do something about it, stand up to the money and the corporate lobbyists (hmmm, did we get an ally for president? perhaps the jury is still out, but methinks not likely)...what was my point?

oh yeah, we're fucked either way. so climb off Angelina Jolie's pretty ass and thank her for feeding a few otherwise destitute kids, and thank Bono for trying to feed Africa. Ingrate.

come on, now you just sound nit picky and bitter. Yes, this is similar to the shorter showers argument. Let's not attack the artists who offer so much positivity to so many people in difficult times. The real culprits are agriculture, industry, and government and we all know it. Stop using a non issue to promote yourself.

Watching you tube Angelina Jolie has a beautifull ass.

And assholes should have their own plane as long as they paint it GREEN.

USA gets what it deserves, once you had Jimmy Carter a good guy, who tried to change things, save the world and you changed him for Ronnie Reagan and the Bush family so please donot complain.

Here in Europe going to a Give a way shop or Foodbank, you will notice rich people, because they like to save money...
they like to say; Second hand stuff is avoiding pollution. POLITICAL OK>

In a bar poor guys give more tip, then rich blokes.
So if you still have a job , a house, a health insurance , a car. aCAR....
live as a beggar, avoid spending money.

Because if you lose everything then it willnot change your lifestyle so much.

Remember in the movie of your life; YOU are the producer and director and main character and admiring Madonna or Michael means you forget who YOU are.

I ignore whose headline it is, whether the author or AlterNet, but it is unfortunate and disproporionate, to say the least, and stronger words would be justified. We all destroy the planet by simply living and breathing, so overpopulation is one of the factors. We all know who are the main destroyers of the planet, starting by the US military and its industrial complex. If AlterNet pretends to be a tabloid, this kind of headlines is the best way to do it.

Instead of focussing on the problem of emitting too much carbon you should be focussing on the solution. And that is brain-dead simple. Grow more trees! They're made of carbon they extract from the atmosphere! And stop chopping them down for no good reason!

l have no idea whether it is true or not but the story goes thus; Bono was on stage in Glasgow, he held his hands out and said, "every time l clap my hands a child in Africa dies!" and he proceeded to clap. After several such claps a voice came from the audience, "well why dont you stop then,--you murdering bastard" --which is off topic a bit but an amusing story.

carbon footprint- keep it simple

How much you spend in a year is a simpler way of calculating your carbon footprint. Even if you spend X on totally organic green stuff you have no control over where that X gets spent next. Does your Prius dealer live in a mansion and drive a behemothmobile? Does that pricey organic tshirt manufacturer spend her profits on day trips to the Seychelles, does that rock star in whom you've invested hundreds of dollars (concert tickets, CDs, more tshirts) wear lots of jewels?

The vast majority of Americans have stopped caring
Posted by: kegbot1 on Jul 17, 2009 5:19 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Look, we've been told so many contradictory things about the environment, the economy and politics that many people are just saying the hell with it and living whatever lives they can muster. It's really difficult to care so much about the Earth and green ecology when you're struggling to put food on the table - that tends to focus the mind very effectively.

Basically I think a majority of people in the country sincerely believe everyone is lying to them.

It does seem to many people that this overweening concern for carbon footprints smacks of elitism, especially among the Americal sub-phylum known as the 'limousine liberal.' Take Al Gore's carbon footprint for instance.

But ah, then you get the people who say 'but. . . but. . . they do so much good!' So the rich and famous get a pass while the rest of us are lectured about low flow shower heads. People are getting fed up with this.

We're all fucked either way. If it's not our elected "representatives" fucking us collectively for their own monetary and personal gain it's the hypocritical, bully pulpit using "celebrities" who continue shoving their pretentious 'do as I say not as I do' mantras down our throats. Then again it's really our fault anyway since WE are the ones who allow our "representatives" to fuck us AND we're the ones who put these so called "artists/celebrities" on their pedestals in the first place with our obssesive need to live vicariously through their over-indulgent escapades... Well hopefully U2 will put on some good shows in Hell when we all get there...

More than some super-rich celebrities who pollute while they are, admittedly, trying to do some good (and, ahem, simultaneously accumulating vast sums of wealth, but to paraphrase Jesus, the poor ye have always with you, not so with Bono, Madonna, et al - er, please excuse the slight sarcasm), I am more concerned about a a world run by a very small minority whose policies encourage the kind of waste of which these celebrities' lifestyles is merely the tip of the iceberg.

That world can be changed by the vast numbers of slaves and oppressed organizing to oppose the policies of said small minority.

Teaching by Example
Posted by: bobconway on Jul 17, 2009 5:46 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Vanessa, you're right.

People with disproportionately large carbon footprints have a special obligation to mitigate and offset their carbon-burning excesses. How they do so may be as important as doing so.

Buying and planting trees is certainly a good thing to do, but it may not always be the best way for entertainers to offset their carbon-burning. Performance artists are in a unique position of being able to educate and influence many other people (far more than 6,500), and taking advantage of that position to educate their fans and to influence politicians and business leaders to create and implement sound environmental policy could be even better than planting trees -- though they should, of course, plant huge forests of trees as well.

Entertainers also must do all they can to reduce their own carbon footprints through restraint, efficiency, and conservation. Just as CSNY did in their 2006 Freedom of Speech Tour and as Willie Nelson does, all traveling entertainers should be burning clean bio-diesel in their vehicles and should travel as lightly and efficiently as they possibly can. Whenever possible they should expand their concert audiences by electronic means (e.g., via giant video screens in multiple remote venues) rather than by physically lugging themselves, their entourages, and tons of equipment to every venue all over the planet.

Teaching by example works much better than preaching.

How about going after the single biggest polluter in the world with the same zeal? the us military consumes as much energy as Nigeria (a country of 140M people). It produces millions of TONS of radioactive waste annually, more than the top 5 chemical countries in the US combined.

the perchlorate found in rocket fuel.... and breast milk and lettuce.

Depleted Uranium munitions which function as dirty bombs left to slowly kill after the battle is over for billions of years.

White phosphorous.

New and improved napalm which the military denies is napalm because it uses kerosene based fuel and recalibrated the benzene ratio in the new napalm.

not to mention the destruction of humans

the military is one beast that must be stopped

The entire entertainment industry is a small flea compared to the U.S. military -- the enormous quantities of oil, miniing, manufacturing, uranium, water, natural gas, land and toxins used to build and operate the military is where we should focus.

Who is talking about this? www.oilwatch.org/, Friends of the EArth, Greenpeace, Indigenous Environmental Network...

Our tax dollars -- and the lives of many people -- go to protect corporate investments abroad. Let's remove the subsidies for corporate domination of other countries, and get carbon emissions down from the biggest polluter in the U.S.

There should be a blacklist of the worst eco-offending celebrities and affluents as well as a list of the most eco-responsible. There are a lot of rich people on my street who all seem to think that driving a car that gets less than 11 mpg somehow shows people how well-off they are. In the pocketbook perhaps but they will never break even in the neurological department. There should be *decimating* taxes on cars that get less than 20 mpg. And as for these freaks who drive their own 747's ~ they should be charged with eco-crimes against humanity. What I don't get is that the very people who make millions and billions of dollars are the very ones who could use their money to design and use eco-friendly yachts and planes ... do they choose instead to poison the air they breath or are they just stupid?

Boycott all entertainers who have these extremely wasteful lifestyles.

Like John Travolta with his own passenger airliner and four other planes.

Like Bruce Springsteen who has his own private plane.

Anyone who has his or her own private plane should be called on to explain why they need it every time they appear in public. It would be one way to make a lot of other people think about their own lifestyle choices.

"A few weeks ago, uber-feminist Naomi Wolf praised Angelina Jolie's independence, symbolized by her ability to fly her own plane ..."
. . . .

Oh, pu-leeese!!

Angelina Jolie is not, I repeat, NOT so special or so independent because she can fly her own plane. Anybody who can drive a car can learn to fly an airplane. My grandmother could fly an airplane. What Angelina has that's special is the money and the free time to learn; two things that are becoming increasingly out of reach for the rest of us.

So, before we get all misty-eyed over the Great Angelina's "accomplishments" (I will concede that she IS a very good actress – if she would just stick to that), let's all remember that it is the gross over-payment to celebs and the fact that they don't have to work every single day of their lives that gives them the freedom to do the things we all would like to do –– things, like piloting airplanes, that most all of us probably have the ability to do as well.

It is time to put out of its (our) misery the "Cult of Personality" that surrounds celebsrities, many of whom are celebrated for often mediocre "talents" and accomplishments.

Who has doubts over the whole man made global warming science? I can see a great number of people on this website seem very much convinced by the mainstream environmentalist views. There is a number of scientists who still reject the theories that we are largely responsible for climate change on this planet. I'm not saying i'm a climate change denier, but i'm somewhat skeptical so please don't flame me. I know many people find this to be a vert touchy subject. I am going to admit i am still unsure, but i've seen good arguements from both sides of the scientific debate. However i think regardless of the truth it is crucial that we tackle the environmental issues such as rainforest destruction and depletion of natural resources and most of all ensure that we become a truly sustainable society.

Even if we are largely responsible is it not in the best interest of the people and our environment to change the very socio-economic political system? Our fractional reserve banking system promotes environmental degredation as it relies on constant consumption and waste for economic growth in order feed the debt it creates. The very system cannot afford to be sustainable due to cyclical consumption and scarcity induced profit it relies on. We need to sort out society before we can even begin to concentrate on saving the planet. Nobody seems to be looking at the root cause of the problem, which is the very system itself.

That's why i find it laughable that governments, corporations and bankers are even supporting the environmentalist agenda. I'm very suspicious of there true motives for it seems to me that the only way they seem to be tackling climate change is through taxes and cap and trade. It seems they are trying to create a profit from the crisis rather than tackle the underlying causes. If we really are faced with the extinction of the human race i would expect them to do everything in there power to stop it rather than using half assed laws to limit peoples emissions.

On the topic of the article i don't think celebraties should be targeted and blaimed. I think we should be pointing the finger at the system itself and the establishment which upholds it.

You knock people who are proving very effective at reaching masses of people about climate, human rights and other issues, almost as if it is them who are responsible. U2 goes on tour what? Every 10 years or something? and it lasts how long? a few weeks? Sure, Angelina can fly her own plane but you act like she flies to Safeway everyday to get her groceries. This kind of reaching may fill deadlines but is a waste of time. I'd like to see a few years where so called progressives and people on the left didn't turn in on their own numbers and start to faction over what amounts to pettiness. We might even accomplish something.

If you want to write about something, google Chinese Mag Lev trains, watch a couple of videos and then ask why we don't have something remotely like that here? I say it's because after several generations of driving our own little pollution chariots, we can't imagine any other way to get around. We isolate every day in our one person per vehicle commutes and point fingers at celebrities who do it too, leaving out the infrequency of their commutes and the good in the messages they bring to people who would otherwise not even get such a message... and in so doing make ourselves feel better about our own dirty daily habits. It's this isolation writ large that I feel makes us such a hostile nation, the foremost purveyor of weapons of war on the planet. We aren't used to being around other people... think we are special, better.

YES! Finally! But let's not stop here. People must realize the waste! Let's stop producing all art and music!

After all, painting a canvas wastes not just paint, but canvas! Think of what REAL achievements could be done with that raw material!

Creation of music wastes not just productive man hours that could be put to REAL use--like filling pot holes, maintaining my landscaping, or cleaning my bathrooms--but also the creation of cd players, ipods, and speakers! For no use AT ALL!!! Listening to music serves no useful purpose, just ask anyone.

/SARCASM

Seriously, DOING STUFF uses resources. So U2 going on tour uses more resources than a bunch of average joes sitting around in their houses watching TV and eating potato chips. The HORROR!

Let's all stop DOING STUFF.

Place your attention on real waste, not a band that does a lot of good in the world going on tour. Complaining about fuel inefficient jets (which a lot more people than just U2 use) might be more productive? Although certainly less sensational. Or should we have a nice 2 minute hate so we can feel better about U2's horrible wastefulness. They should just stay home and kill themselves, that would SAVE THE PLANET!!!

What if every one of the celebrities mentioned purchases carbon offsets to cancel out their oversized footprints? There would be no article.

That is a very salient possibility that was completely omitted. I'm sure that many regular-people readers of this article already do that. I wouldn't stop doing it if I became a celebrity, in fact I'd likely do much more of it.

Even if you have a monthly electricity bill of $10,000, it is possible to pay to have enough trees planted (or carbon sequestered, or some other methods) to undo that damage.

If these celebs are known to not try to offset their emissions while claiming greenness, then by all means, get primitive on their hypocritical-if-perfectly-formed asses. Just be sure to demonstrate that your attacks are justified.

i am very curious to know if the author of this attacking article ever "approached" any of the artists she is smearing in the public eye...were they asked what they do, to offset their impact? Were they asked, to change their "evil" ways? It seems possible that a band like U2, considering what they do, would consider a fair proposal to hold themselves accountable....it was mentioned, "focus on the solution, not the problem..." i agree. What good can come of blacklisting artists who try and make a positive difference...give them a chance! Talk with them somehow....probably the reason they fly independently in the first place is privacy from the lunatic public....none of us, who are not famous, have any idea of how stressful it must be...give them a break. Ask them what's up...if they do not respond, THEN point out their flaws to the whole world....and, what about each of us? we all have flaws...Your article comes accross self-righteous...i do think the idea of carbon footprinting could be a good one, yet, can it be more respectful? Can it somehow be more honoring? Does it have to make bad guys out of good people? Blessings to ALL....

How about we pick on the few celebs that actually do something good in society and blame them for global warming? This article "might" have had some relevence had you picked on celebs that could care less about society. Maybe had you said what is Paris Hilton's Carbon Footprint for having a TV show about finding a best friend the article would have some meaning.

I'm all about protecting the planet but when you start to sound like PETA when they attacked the president for swating a fly you lose the majority of people on your side.

I'm an animal lover and all for the ethical treatment of animals. But I'm not for letting a mosquito suck the blood from my body because I don't want to hurt the little fellow.

Global warming is the same for me. I support stopping companies from destroying our planet and green energy such as solar and wind. But when you tell me I must ride a bike everywhere I go a use a single piece of toilet paper I tune out.

The only way to get people to stand behind you is to have a rational discussion about how to stop the worst culprets of global warming. You will find most people support recycling, ending deforestation and blowing tops of mountains for coal. But when you complain about every little thing it makes the majority of people stop caring.

p.s. Stop picking on Angelina. I'm sure the millions of men who stay home to pleasure themselves to her lowers their carbon footprint. see its even. :-)

Like Bush and Blair, is not necessarily a bad thing.

Do you know what they say whilst they are having anal sex with them?

How Can Ozzy who did War Pigs have sex with George Bush?

How Can Kevin Spacey who I rate as one of the most interesting actors America has ever produced do it with Tony Blair? And was he taking or receiving?

What do these people say when they are cosying up to these horrendous people.

They are Artists.

Judge Them on What they say in their Art, not what you think they are saying to politicians

Because you do not know what they are saying to politicians.

All accusations about anal sex are not based on any knowledge of said acts and are merely an artistic expression

It might have been oral for all I know

Personally I think most musicians and artists are doing their best to make the World a Better Place, and their Art gives me Great Pleasure.

I rate American Beauty as One of The Best Films I Have Ever Seen.

I rate Bob Geldoff as one of the most aweful musicians I have succeeded in avoiding seeing live.

But I still think he is a Brilliant Bloke and I have read his book.

There is no amount of good that anyone can do that erases huge amounts of pollution they personally cause. So often on alternet, the so-called sheeple get knocked for thinking TV is important, and spending too much time on it. How is a concert tour any better or different? Because there are pyrotechnics? Because the artist is really cool? If somehow you think we really need concert tours, you bought something that was advertised right into your head, no different than any other type of advertised product. If these people do good, great. Doesn't affect a huge amount of carbon at all. But they're wealthy business people charging an arm and a leg for a concert ticket, and somehow it makes people feel as though they've had a quality life experience. This is an advertised notion, nothing more. No one needs this. THere are 25 different fulfilling things anyone could do, including Bono, that would pollute far less and contribute far more to anyone's quality of life. Just imagine what you'd tell any sheeple person they should do instead of watching American Idol, and that's what would also nicely replace a Bono concert. Visit your neighbors, that kind of thing. I don't get why some forms of entertainment are so slammed, and some are being so praised. But there is nothing that makes a concert worth what this article states. It's some bizarre type of brainwashing that is making people think that it's worth this huge contribution to the problem in our atmosphere to see a CONCERT. On some level, we all have to know that this is hogwash. Have we really replaced real life with transitory peak experiences and then defend them because they were so stimulating or gratifying? No wonder we're in such a mess!

Bono's good deeds don't require the carbon output of his tour. Your life doesn't require it, either. He could surely do his good deeds with almost no air travel. He should do that. Why are we defending them? They're Hummer drivers with wings. I read awhile back that two long flights are like driving a Hummer for a year. What IS it about air travel that has seduced and blinded us? If we face the truth about how pointless it all is, what will we be suckers about next?

Bush, Sr. once said that the American way of life is not up for negotiation. Boy, did even he not know the truth of what he said! There is no neutral form of carbon. Concert carbon and good deed carbon will help fry us along with hedonistic Hummer carbon. There is no difference. What's really sad is we don't need this stuff and wouldn't miss it if we developed real lives with real people.

If a rich guy ain't giving his shit away and living modestly, sorry, I ain't buying into that crap.

I Have Gradually Been Writing This To Try and Complain at The Moaners

Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Does it Need Editing? I have more words already written, but sometimes less is more effective than more

Guilfest Was Brilliant and The Moaners Are Exaggerating

Guilfest is a Completely Brilliant Site. The Main Stage is Set at the bottom of a gently sloping bowl. Everyone gets a Brilliant View.

The Diversity of Stages and Different Events is Completely Wonderful - all within very easy walking distance of whereever you are camping.

The site drains very quickly and despite the rain, mud was not a problem

We were there from before the start until well after the end

We saw absolutey no trouble whatsoever - and no one gave us a hard time.

Sure there were lots of teenagers - some of who'm got in for free. We were camping right next to many of them. And whilst they talked a load of nonsense and were rather annoying at times and they trashed one toilet in the campsite late on Sunday night - and they scatterred everyone's litter everywhere to make a mess...

If you think Guilfest wasn't a Brilliantly Lovely Peaceful Festival With Virtually No Trouble Whatsoever

Then You Haven't been to around 100 Festivals like I have with My Wife and Often Kids

I suspect Many of The People Complaining Weren't Even There.

They Dumped Their Kids Off in Their SUV's On Thursday, and Picked Them Up on Monday (Don't Say They Didn't Cos I Know They Did)

They Heard the Worst of What Miss 13 Year Old Spotty Shoes Told Them, and Totally Exagerrated the Problems cos she was Crying and Saying

"Oh it Was Aweful Daddy - I Don't Want To Go Again"

So Daddy Tries to get it Banned by posting exagerations

Ask The Police - For Their Statistics

They Will Tell You That It is in The Top 5 UK Festivals with regards to exceedingly low crime levels.

A solution to some of the minor problems that did occur would be to offer under 16's Free Admission provided they were accompanied by an Adult who Pays Full Price, Otherwise their is no admittance (unless they dig a hole under the fence in the spirit of The Great Escape)

When our kids were under 16 We always accompanied them to Festivals. We would never let them go by themselves, but maybe Most Surrey Parents are quite happy to let their kids run wild unaccompanied by a responsible adult

Oh and not once did I see anyone sniffing cocaine, not only that, not once did my wife say she could smell anyone smoking wacky baccy amd its the first thing she said when we went to Hyde Park a couple of week's earlier to see Neil Young. And she's got a nose like a bloodhound.

And not once did the bag boys and girls sniff my bottle of water, to see if it contained vodka, cos I didn't take a bag through security. I left that to my wife, so that they could check her electric toothbrush to make sure it was not a rampant rabbit ( we'll have no fun in here unless you pay even more for it )

No I just walked through security unchallenged with a can of beer in each jacket pocket, and half a litre of brandy in my shorts.

But that still wasn't enough, so my mate asked me if I fancied a pint...

I said Yes I'll have a pint of real ale - and he asked us all

And he queued at one bar to get the drinks for himself and everyone who wanted fizzy stuff

And then he queued again, to get just me a pint of real ale

And I thought what a great mate.

Actually the bars were Very Fast and Efficient

But checking people for alcohol is a complete intrusion on their liberty - especially women.

It's not an effin pub its a festival

And most people are skint and can't afford £4 for a pint of fizz

The good places to live are always dark at night . . .
Posted by: Rosasharn on Jul 17, 2009 5:32 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
... because no one can live in 5 houses at once. I saw our beautiful town EMPTY itself of PEOPLE, while the real estate went through the roof (not a celebrity neighborhood). People who had no intention of being here more than a few days a year bought up all the houses. I don't think this is right. There should be limits to how many homes one may own. Especially, when those very absentee owners drove out everyone else who can no longer live here due to the excessive costs (that didn't exist 10 years ago!).So many EMPTY places while so many people have no place to live. I believe that if you own a home, you should actually be living in it, instead of taking ALL the good places, so no one else can live there.
Greed is epidemic in America, never more so than in the real estate industry. Hey, how come no one ever regulates them?
Oh, and Jessica, your thinly veiled envy of women who are probably a bit more exciting than you, well, girl, it's a bit nauseating.

Knows I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
There's a part of me in chaos that's quiet
And there's a part of you that wants me to riot
Everybody needs to cry or needs to spit
Every sweet-tooth needs just a little hit
Every beauty needs to go out with an idiot
How can you stand next to the truth and not see it?
Change of heart comes slow..
It's not a hill it's a mountain
As you start out the climb
Do you believe me or are you doubtin?
We're gonna make it all the way to the light
But I know I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
Every generation gets a chance to change the world
Divination that will listen to your boys and girls
Is the sweetest melody the one we haven't heard?
Is it true that perfect love drives out all fear?
The right to be ridiculous is something I hold dear
But change of heart comes slow...
It's not a hill it's a mountain
As you start out the climb
You see for me I've been shoutin
But we're gonna make it all the way to the light
But I know I'll go crazy if I don't go crazy tonight
Baby, baby, baby, I know I'm not alone
Baby, baby, baby, I know I'm not alone
Ha, ha, ha

It's not a hill it's a mountain
You see for me I've been shouting
Let's shout until the darkness, squeeze out sparks of light

All of a sudden these three celebs are destroying the planet???! First off, what about the other celebs who tour as well? Second, this global warming issue did not occur overnight. It's a gradual thing that had been building for years. Thirdly, all I hear is people trying to pass the torch of blame when we all know that we are each responsible in our own way for this, too. And finally, If the "celebs" didn't have retards like you and the rest of the pres chasing them all over the world to report on just how much their shit stinks and in what quantities, they would not be who they are. Plus, don't forget the adoring fans from all over the world who come to support their favorite celebs. I mean, how are the celebs supposed to get to the latest destination for adoration, they don't have wings. So they use the next best thing, pollution-making planes, trains and automobiles to get there because America could not be bothered to set the example of putting the health of the planet before profits. Stop pointing fingers and leave the celebs alone. I accept partial responsibility and everyone else should, too.

Radiohead actually commissioned a study before their last tour, and they found that fans commuting to and from their shows produced 32 times as much pollution as the band's trasportation needs.

You'd be far better off campaigning for more efficient and widely available mass transit than to bash touring bands for their infinitesimal contributions to the overall greenhouse gas problem.

w2 energy is already doing this, cheap, clean, check them out and let me know what you think
W2 Energy designs mass-to-energy
plants which convert feedstocks
into syngas, using patented plasma-based reactor technology.

Patented gas-to-liquid catalysts convert the syngas into hydrocarbon liquids and waxes, and patented steam engines (See the new "Steam Ray" now running) convert the heat generated into electricity. The electricity generated, can be sold to the grid, and will also the supply the plant's power requirements. Learn more about the W2 Energy technology.

The following feedstocks can be converted.
coal (clean coal technology)

municipal solid waste
agricultural waste
human and animal waste
tires and plastics
medical waste

W2’s mass-to-energy technology can convert any hydrocarbon feedstock (including coal, municipal solid waste, agricultural waste and sewage) into electricity and liquid fuel (gasoline, JP8 jet fuel and ultra low sulfur diesel). Our technology filters out the harmful by-products such as hydrochloric acid, and makes additional fuel out of the greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides).

One 4 ton per day system including the NT Plasmatron gasifier, the Steam Ray steam engine, the SunFilter algae reactor and the SmartFuel gas-to-liquid reactor, can fit on a single 45-foot tractor trailer bed.

The W2 Energy technology is modular and scaleable. At 4 tons per day, it can be deployed in plants processing 10,000 tons per day or more of any hydrocarbon feedstock.

Other W2 technologies include:

PAG (Plasma Assisted Gassifier) mass to energy reactor

SEGS (Small Energy Generating Systems)

Bono: A Fraud to the Core
Posted by: Fonseca on Jul 18, 2009 9:34 PM

Bono is nothing more than a slick self-marketer, the worst of his breed. While he's made tens of millions of dollars scamming his naive fans, posing as a "rockin' man of peace", his actions are the exact opposite.

His carbon footprint (numerous multimillion-dollar mansions and townhouses/apartments around the world, spawning 5 kids who will surely also spend their lives in luxury, his million-dollar vacations, fleets, etc.) is one thing, but his hypocrisy is even more toxic.

A couple of years ago, one of his empires' ventures was to fund the creation of a video "game" called "Mercenaries 2: World In Flames". The premise was that "a dictator has taken over a South American nation's oil fields and production facilities". The "game's" realistic background showed numerous, actual neighborhoods and other street scenes in Venezuela.

The game-player's mission was to go in, U$ M16 guns blazing, to oust this tyrant (with no subtle hint that the "bad guy" was President Hugo Chávez), international law be damned. It was described by its developers as “an explosive open-world action game set in a massive, highly reactive, war-torn world. A power-hungry tyrant messes with Venezuela's oil supply, sparking an invasion that turns the country into a warzone.”

This was to be no silly little teenage boy's testosterone-laden macho dream. Bono's financial cabal invested some $300 million in the production company, one Pandemic Studios/Bio-Ware, Corp.

Los Angeles-based Pandemic was set up some years before with $25 million in start-up funds from the U$ Pentagon. It has contracted, on several occasions, to provide war/intervention-related software for the CIA.

After over a year of pleas, appeals to reason and the hint of a boycott campaign by the Venezuela Solidarity Network, religious and lay leaders around the world, Bono Inc. finally gave up the quest--but, only after he had quietly sold off the venture for a tidy profit. He never once responded to, or even acknowledged the outcry .

Our strutting rebel's financial empire also invested another $300 million in Forbes Magazine, becoming the largest single shareholder. Remember, Forbes proudly bills itself as "the capitalist tool".

I can't think of another poseur whose hypocrisy stinks this much. Stop believing his façade and, definitely, stop buying his music--it only encourages him and his sybaritic, anti-peace, anti-democracy, anti-Earth actual lifestyle. Check out more info from Venezuela Solidarity Campaign, at vensolidarity.org.

If you want the real article, a guy who walks his talk, listen to Bruce Cockburn.

...Captain Renault replied, "I'm shocked, shocked to learn that spoiled, pampered, self-centered, rich people are acting like spoiled, pampered, self-centered, rich people. Oh, by they way, did you arrange my booking on the next plane to Lisbon?"

and it's just as bad now... focusing on a few celebrities and implying they are somehow most responsible for climate anomalies. U2 tours use fuel, sure, but they tour, what, once a decade? The rest of us spew our exhaust and other waste 24/7. Get busy finding real issues to write about.

Money is the problem

As long as money rules, and we continue to worship it and those who accumulate vast amounts of it while contributing absolutely nothing to the betterment of society or the integrity of the planet, the world will continue its downhill spiral. Species will continue to disappear, pollution will increase, and people and nations will do absolutely anything to maintain cash flow.

Money and the power it commands over human activity are THE enemies of humanity and the earth. It is too far removed from physical reality. DOWN with it in favor of a physical accounting system that measures human consumption in terms of itself and assigns GUARANTEED consuming privilege equally to all, not empty tokens of debt and human greed and desire that allow the most predatory and wasteful to accumulate it. EXPLORE TECHNOCRACY NOW at www.technocracy.org. Non-profit, non-religious, non-discriminatory rescue for North America and all of its citizens.

HYPOCRACY IS LEGAL

These celebs, are hired by lobbyist, and by corporations to play a part! Ronald Reagan, played such a good role for his handlers, that we gave him the white house! People WORDS don't legally have to fit their actions! Doctors get paid To kill, as well as save lives, lawyers set people up, and lobbyist get paid to get their message out, AT ANY EXPENSE!!!
Web sites are the same, they may preach peace, justice and equality, but then censor you and banish you for exercising your freedom of speech and expression!!!
Care2 is one such site, that does not practice what they preach, and they too are funded by the same people that fund these actors/ celebs, to do their bidding!!!
We as a nation, as a people are too dumb to be free, we have traded our freedom for free-dumb! If your neighbor is not free, than neither are you, if our speech is not free, than neither are we!!! FREEDOM MEANS EQUALITY, FASCISM MEANS SEPRATE!!! Double standards, are the norm, we freed the women for they could enslave us, OUR REPUBLIC has become a CUNTREE, DEMANDING FREEDOM FOR OURSELVES AT THE EXPENSE OF ALL OTHERS!!! Shakespeare said it best "kill all of the lawyers" for they represent the highest bidder, after they divide the issue, creating sides, for the side with the money will win! As for me I see that they speak with a forked tongue, and I will no longer trust any of them to represent me ever again, because they won't return the favor, they just want your money and support, then they will turn you out into that dark night all alone!!! Do you "NOT-SEE" that they are all deceivers!!! YOU CUNT SAY THAT, NOT IN AMERICA, THE LAND OF CONFORMITY AND DIVISION!!!

What would be really wonderful is if the concert places could be made into "Green" buildings/sites, that use solar power and all that good stuff....exploring the issue is a good start anyhow....
