Obama's Climate Guru: Paint Your Roof White!

By Steve Connor, Independent UK. Posted May 27, 2009.

When it comes to carbon emissions, changing the color of roofs and roads would be like taking all the world's cars off the road for 11 years.

Some people believe that nuclear power is the answer to climate change, others have proposed green technologies such as wind or solar power, but Barack Obama's top man on global warming has suggested something far simpler -- painting your roof white.

Steven Chu, the US Secretary of Energy and a Nobel prize-winning scientist, said yesterday that making roofs and pavements white or light-coloured would help to reduce global warming by both conserving energy and reflecting sunlight back into space. It would, he said, be the equivalent of taking all the cars in the world off the road for 11 years.

Speaking in London prior to a meeting of some of the world's best minds on how to combat climate change, Dr Chu said the simple act of painting roofs white could have a dramatic impact on the amount of energy used to keep buildings comfortable, as well as directly offsetting global warming by increasing the reflectivity of the Earth.

"If that building is air-conditioned, it's going to be a lot cooler, it can use 10 or 15 per cent less electricity," he said. "You also do something in that you change the albedo of the Earth -- you make it more reflective. So the sunlight comes down and it actually goes back up – there is no greenhouse effect," Dr Chu said.

When sunlight is reflected off a white or light-coloured surface much of that light will pass through the atmosphere and back into space, unlike the infrared radiation emitted from the Earth's warmed-up surface, which is blocked by greenhouse gases and causes global warming. "What we're doing is that, as we put in more greenhouse gases, we're putting in more insulation for infrared light. So if you make white roofs and the sunlight comes in, it goes right through that [insulation]," said Dr Chu.

The principle could also be extended to cars where white or "cool colours" designed to reflect light and radiation could make vehicles more energy efficient in summer. "If all vehicles were light-coloured, there could be considerable savings because then you can downsize the air conditioning... and downsizing the air conditioner means more efficient air conditioning and a considerable reduction in energy," he said.

Asked about whether the US administration has any plans to manipulate the climate artificially using large-scale geoengineering programmes, Dr Chu said there were no such plans "at this time." But painting surfaces white is one geoengineering proposal that he is taking seriously.

"Now you smile, but if you look at all the buildings and make all the roofs white, and if you make the pavement a more concrete-type of colour than a black-type of colour, and you do this uniformly... It's the equivalent of reducing the carbon emissions due to all the cars in the world by 11 years," he said.

"It's like you've just taken them off the road for 11 years. It's actually geoengineering."

The idea would even work in countries with temperate climates, such as Britain, because white-coloured roofs would help to reflect the radiated heat from homes and offices back into the building during winter months, said Dr Chu. One unresolved issue concerns the aesthetic considerations of making sloping roofs white. But with flat roofs that are not visible from the street, there should be no objection to painting them white, he said

Dr Chu is one of 20 Nobel prize-winning scientists attending a meeting on climate change at the Royal Society and St James's Palace organised by Cambridge University. He said energy efficiency will be the most immediate way of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

The white revolution: How it would work

  • The idea of painting surfaces white to conserve energy is being actively pursued by the US. Earlier this month, Barack Obama's chief scientific adviser, John Holdren, received a scientific memorandum on the subject.
  • Scientists estimate that making roofs and pavements white or more light-coloured would counter global warming with "negative radiative forcing" -- reflecting sunlight back into space. They said that retrofitting urban roofs and pavements in tropical and temperate regions with solar-reflective materials would offset about 44 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide.
  • The scientists said it would lower the cost of air conditioning, making buildings more comfortable and mitigate the "urban heat island" effect caused by the concentration of concrete surfaces in cities.

Consequential assessment at its best.

Jimmy Carter had solar panels installed on top of the White House, and Reagan had them ripped out after oil was found in Alaska.

If the repugnants win a majority, they will certainly deny that white is reflective and paint everything black.

I have mine in process

I have a 2000 sq ft roof. I started painting it with some aluminum reflective. I only got 1/3 done summer before last, as an experiment. It cut the temp in the living room by 10 degrees.
This spring I got 2/3 primed then 1/2 painted white before having to have surgery so I cannot climb up there. It has lowered the temp in the area of the house that I painted over that I have not used ac at all yet this year. Last year we would have needed it for almost 2 months.saving me 200$ a month. When Im on my feet again and off my back(bypass) I will finish the wwhole roof and second coat with Henrys 287 Kool Seal.
We have dropped our power bill from 450 in dead of winter and in high summer to 166$. We have done a lot of small stuff too, insulated curtain liners, sealing up air leaks, finding them with a night vision camera during the cold months to find where heat was leaking out. Our heating bill was almost half of what it was last year and that is with the cost of fuel oil tripling in price. Also cook on the smallest burner I can and use covered pots, and a toaster oven to bake main dishes of less than 5 pounds, I also throw the potatoes in to bake with meat dish, if veggies can cook slow, I put that pot on top of the toaster oven. CFLs then LEDs as those die off. I bought a commercial exhaust fan (smaller size) because this is a modular and has no upper sashes to pull down to let heat escape. The 12" louver covered fan uses 132 watts on high instead of 4,000 the central ac uses. I have to install it when I m up again too. The roof has little insulation so we plan to remedy that, its going to be messy as there is no attic just a dead air space between ceiling and roof with about 2" of loose rock wool. It will require taking the eaves apart and blow in from there. We have a solar water heater to install as well and it will generate most of our domestic hot water with enough left over to at least heat the bathroom floors. As for the roof in a few years when we can afford it will want to replace with metal roof and even more insulation. Which is also reflective in silver or white.

An Idea for the South Only

In the northern United States, we have dark roofs. That's because they absorb solar energy and help heat our homes, even without solar panels. That helps reduce our heating costs. Dark roofs also melt snow, which prevents leaking and our ceilings from caving in under snowpack. Obviously, only a man from California would suggest that we all have white roofs. If he lived in Minnesota he would not have come up with that idea. By all means, if you live in the south, have a white roof. A white roof would probably double my winter heating bill.

How about lower the speed limit?

I have yet to see a proposal by the new administration to lower the speed limit. Not only would this save on fuel, it could lead to lighter cars that could survive accidents at the lower speeds, which in turn would lead to more efficiency, etc...

I live in southern Arizona and we have painted our roofs in white and beige for years .. It does not take a genius such a sDr Chu to come up with this ... Also i wish we would have light colored roads - because all the building and development has changed the course of our monsoon season - which we so desparately needs. The outlying desert areas get large amounts of water which does not benefit the developed area .. Too much hot air rises and prevents the monsoons to hit our cities ! It is a shame what man does to destrey the fragile balance here in the desert .. Of course, now they are whining about water shortage ! Its a frigging no brainer! Just look at Europe - even in Germany where there is not a lot of sun - SOLAR works great for them and they use it efficiently ! I swear, Americans are Stupid and if one lets them - they will mess up a wet dream!

Get Serious

I won't argue that painting roofs white is useless.

I will argue that the fundamental problem is overpopulation. Nibbling around the edges of our lifestyle won't change the trend: population growth, and the industrialization required to support it, is changing the climate. A mass extinction event is underway in the biosphere, and it's going to get worse. Much worse. Because we have done nothing to constrain our numbers.

For the most part, people don't even want to talk about overpopulation. Even acknowledging the problem is tantamount to crying "eugenics!" from the rooftops.

White rooftops, now.

I doubt that's going to matter very much in the end.
