Your whole story is based on your false conclusion that the trails we see are jet exhaust. That is preposterous and you come across as a fool for even suggesting it. Modern jets do not have a visible exhaust, and haven't had visible exhaust for decades.

Growing up in the '70s I remember seeing contrails everyday as jets flew over my home. What are contrails? As a jet flies, moisture is released from the jet engines. If the jet is high enough in the sky (a high altitude) where the humidity (moisture in the air) is low (very little moisture), then the moisture released from the engines of the jet immediately forms ice crystals because of the speed of the jet through the cool air. That is the trail that forms behind the jet.

Contrails never last more than a few seconds because water is a heat conductor, so it absorbs the heat of all the air around it, and the heat of the sun. That's why when you see a contrail behind a jet, it disappears as quickly as it appears, and the trail stays the same length the entire time as the jet flies overhead.

You will never see a contrail appear among clouds because clouds form at lower altitudes of high humidity. Clouds are a direct result of high humidity. Contrails form in low humidity, and dissipate just as quickly.

If the trail behind the jet is thick and/or the trail persists even as the jet has flown out of sight, then what you see is not a contrail. It is not water vapor, but rather must consist of some other particulates. Most people call them 'chemtrails', chem being short for chemical. I call them spray trails.

In Los Angeles, one day you will see a beautiful clear blue sky, and the next day you will see a massive display of spray trails. As you watch, the trails spread and form variations of clouds that resemble cirrus clouds. I've watched jets spraying trails until the sky is completely covered horizon to horizon, even over the ocean, as far as I can see. What's funny is that when I see a small clearing in the spray, where I can see the sky, lo and behold, a jet comes through and sprays a new thick line through that clearing.

My suggestion to everyone is that you watch the sky every chance you get until you can judge easily for yourself. They seem to spray less during the Summer, so start watching now. You will notice all kinds of patterns like multiple parallel lines, tic tac toe, DNA (two jets flying parallel, one a slight distance behind the other, and they criss cross each other's path again and again!) and more. On more than one occasion I've even seem them spray a circle!

If you find a website that tells you contrails can last several minutes and even hours, then you know that you can not trust that website. They are spewing false science in an attempt to steer you away from concerning yourself with what they are doing in secret, right in front of you, in the sky.

I suggest you do more research to discover what particulates they are spraying. I can assure you that whatever it is, it's not good for us. Otherwise, why would they keep it a secret? After WWII, England admitted to spraying the population with all kinds of elements as experiments. In the '50s, the CIA used car exhaust, and subway ventilation systems to spray elements in NYC as experiments.

Watch the sky.

They are INDEED contrails... when conditions are right, the ice crystals you mention act as seeding for any other moisture up there to condense around,,, some of these clouds that start as contrails can become quite extensive, covering the whole sky...

You should take a course in meteorology and learn about your planet's atmosphere and stop peddling this nonesense. Chemtrails indeed...

i am unbelievably tired of seeing every alternative explanation of the incredibly complex and frequently bizarre goings-on in this world labeled as "conspiracy theories"... that term is used disturbingly often to silence those that have the temerity to think "out of the box" rather than following the pre-digested, villager-approved explanations for the mess we find ourselves in... trying to find truth behind the spin, disinformation, ideological pablum, talking points, and hidden agendas of those who are our self-proclaimed arbiters of what is and isn't acceptable discussion has become like the search for the holy grail... i have been forced to adopt the mantra, "i believe everything and i believe nothing"...

Consider this hypothesis:

The inability to agree on the story is a defining feature of a delusional belief system. People with alternate theories, such as chemtrails, tend to disagree radically with one another.

I'm not a political scientist or a sociologist, but there seems to be an obvious pattern here.

For example, right-wingers say man-made global warming is a hoax...but they disagree completely on what's really going on. Some say the globe is warming, but that it's not manmade. Others say it's cooling. Each global warming denier has his/her own crackpot explanation for what is going on. The only thing they agree on is that the scientists are wrong.

Ditto with the 9/11 Truth Movement, which holds that 9/11 was an "inside job." The Truthers say the government story is wrong...but then the agreement ends. In fact, virtually every 9/11 Truther in the world has a different theory--a fact you can verify by looking at a few Truther sites. They disagree on every aspect of the theory--from who did it to how they did it to why they did it. The only thing they agree on is that, somehow, the real experts are wrong.

You see what I mean. Delusional people can't achieve any kind of consensus on their beliefs. They reject the theories of qualified experts and go off and make up their own theories.

Sure enough, chemtrail believers have countless conflicting theories about what is being sprayed, by whom, and for what purpose. They fight with one another, attack one another, and call each other government agents constantly. It's really very funny.

There's an interesting chapter on contrails in The Cloudspotters Guide by Gavin Pretor-Pinney. The science is separate, however, from being concerned about and investigating the misuse of power by those who call the shots.

To all those who subscribe to "chemtrail theory" - all I can say is, test yourself!

Is your belief based on emotion, on what you would _like_ to believe? Or is it based on fact?

Look down the left of the link for different topics so you can learn about contrail formation and the myriad of ways they manifest. If you see a contrail going "on" and "off" - it isn't proof of a "chemtrail" button being pushed on and off, its due to the nature of the atmosphere:

The humidity varies with altitude, and a layer of low humidity can be sandwiched between two layers of high humidity. You can get the same effect with temperature. A warm layer of air can actually lay on top of a colder layer in what is called an “inversion” (you’ll hear this on the weather sometimes, referred to as an “inversion layer”). When a plane flies through this inversion layer, the trail can be “broken”.

It’s not just climbing or descending flights either. The boundaries between these layers is not flat, and gravity waves or rising convection currents of air can create large volume of air that differ in temperature and/or humidity from the neighboring air, and so can break (or make) the contrail when then plane flies through them.

As ever, there is a confusion between "theory" and "evidence".

Some good points are covered in the article, but these days I usually skip to the conclusion of the article, which in this case is woefully inadequate because of its dismissal of all the evidence.

Those who are parroting "contrails... contrails... contrails... CONTRAILS for heaven's sake" have not looked at all the evidence:

Actually it's just cheap propaganda that seems to be Alternet's stock in trade as an "alternative" to corporate MSM. What bargain basement irony.

All the brilliant posters here IGNORE THE FACT that all aircraft flying above 18,000 ft are tracked by THOUSANDS of flight controllers.

Military jets during training are in MOA's........outside they are controlled by ATC.

Anyone can go to a local airport and purchase airmaps that define federal airways.

Radar blips don't happen in IFR airspace without ATC seeing it.

Are air traffic controllers part of the 'conspiracy' too??

One of the things our brains do constantly is the comparison of things, events and situations, in order to find similarities and correlations among them. So, if Caveman Kronk saw a lightning bolt strike a tree and burn it to ashes, he'll run for cover next time a big dark cloud approaches.

I agree that people sometimes come up with outlandish theories and beliefs for apparently mundane things, but this is NOT the case with the contrail/chemtrail suspicions. Those suspicions, unfortunately, are NOT completely unfounded.

The article doesnt mention it at all, but secret spraying tests over populated areas were actually done in many locations, inside and out of the United States. For decades. With real people, who were unaware of whatever was taking place. Real people who died or got sick because of those tests.

Interesting, huh? Wanna know more? Well, just some info about one out of many biowarfare programs is now declassified, but it certainly shows those tests were very real. I have my own theory. Contrails evaporate quickly because they are primarily composed of water vapor. Chemtrails do not evaporate quickly because they are primarily composed of something other than water vapor.

Now we're to believe jet engines pollute far, far more today than they did twenty years ago? That the huge, miles-long hanging "contrails" those of us who live in rural areas observe crisscrossing the sky, on and way off the regular flight paths, are "normal" jet exhaust?

Contrails are water vapor and dissipate quickly. They are not and never have been jetexhaust. The trails "conspiracy theorists" are referring to hang in the sky for a long, long time, resulting in a clear blue sky hazing over with "clouds", or something that looks like clouds.

Unlike the author, I don't claim to know what's going on. However, I do know the difference between contrails and chemtrails, and that chemtrails are not normal jet exhaust. Jet engines do not belch HUGE plumes of exhaust. This is clearly fiction. That these jets are belching huge plumes of something is observable fact.

I have no theory about chemtrails, and had not heard about those theories mentioned in this article. However....... I live in a very small village in northern New Mexico, surrounded by lots of land. There are no major airports within miles, and very little air traffic. When the occasional aircraft flies over one can see a small vapor trail behind, that dissipates in seconds. Every now and then, however, the sky changes radically. Dozens of planes, at one time, will crisscross the sky leaving trails that linger and spread turning a beautiful, blue sky gray. I don't know what they are, but I don't feel they are normal flight patterns. There is no pattern to their appearance, and when this happens it is such a radical change from what one normally sees. I would like to see some real investigation. Air samples tested before the appearance of these aircraft and then again after.

What if passenger jet contrails were a real source of global warming in at least two ways? What if more regulation of the airline industry were a partial cure?

(Someone call an EMT, because Southwest Airlines is choking on a little bag of pretzels as I write this!)

We know that long-lasting contrails on humid days reflect sunlight back into space, but that short-lasting contrails on dry days disappear into water vapor, which acts as a greenhouse gas. So the airlines are real polar bear killers!

The strong greenhouse effect solution would be for airlines to not fly in the upper atmosphere on dry days. That way they wouldn't pollute to the detriment of the rest of us. Keep at least half of the planes down on the ground on such days. The chi-chi passengers could still get to Chicago every day, and many others could take more environmentally benign transportation modes, might wait a day, or might not travel at all.

This proposal affects profits! The airlines will absolutely hate the idea. So will Disney World with all its faux green exhibits and energy hog roller coasters. But what's wrong with the proposal? It's a compromise. The uncompromising alternative is to not fly jets at all.

Down the road (translation, Boeing wouldn't work on environmental issues for 100 years if we let them off, they'd wait until their polluting company was as dead as GM or Chrysler, then go cry for a national bailout) we need jets or prop planes that don't dispense so much water vapor into the atmosphere or that don't fly as high.

The real point is "PEOPLE NO LONGER TRUST THEIR GOVERNMENT" and fear(and quite rightly so) that their Government or more correctly the Pentagon are trying out some weird experiments on their own people. Like you, I have thought about these a lot, as I see them nearly every day now. I would like to know if it is something that is being done to combat global warming or somesuch.

It's not necessarily that what is being done is bad, but when you don't tell people, they are naturally going to suspect something's up.

I want to know why they do it and what risk it poses to the health of living creatures, if any.

We're afraid of everything, all the time now. He wanted to create an atmosphere of fear (no pun intended) and he did. You're right that if they really want to kill alot of us, this seems the slowest, most ineffective, unreliable way, and how do they keep these chemicals from themselves and their families? They can't. You're absolutely right that this could be real and yet still not a conspiracy or even a conspiracy of anything like trying to kill huge numbers of people.

It seems sad that we're so much more afraid than we used to be, afraid of those in power and of what we see, if we think it's unusual. I asked my husband alot of questions about contrails last night, because he's the only person I know who has flown so many years. he's puzzled at the alarm over certain patterns, the criss-crossing grids. He was very matter-of-fact, there are more planes, those are planes flying at different altitudes, to different places, so of course the trails cross. He said that not all altitudes will result in contrails, and that flying along even at a steady altitude you will sometimes leave them and sometimes not. Military flyers have a special interest in contrails; they give you away. He also said that military planes do 180 turns. Anyone who didn't know this could certainly be puzzled observing it, especially if it's a tanker up doing refueling exercises and flying in a race-track oval for a long time.

Yes, open-minded, skeptical, but not eager to see the worst, or dismiss everything. If we're afraid of everything, or just afraid of too much, Bush can really say Mission Accomplished. It keeps Republican thinking in power even when Republicans aren't.

I watch the sky more often than most people. I see these contrails, and chemtrails, whatever you want to call them. The difference is astonishing between contrails and so called chemtrails. Actual contrails from commercial flights, (I know what causes them) are very different from the subject chemtrails. I don't know what they are but tell me one thing; Why do the chemtrail planes fly away from commercial flight paths, why do they make grids, circles, dots and dashes, and X's, and why do they spread out with a rainbow colored haze destroying the days when the sky is clear blue and the sun is out? Even as the commercial craft vapors disappear shortly, similar altitudes and weather conditions. And air traffic is way down over the past five years. With airlines failing, flights cancelled, and consolidation of other flights to pack each plane. Air traffic is down at our airport, but contrail numbers are the same or increasing. There is virtually no air traffic at night from our commercial airport, yet I can see chemtrails being made back and forth in the sky. I'm not a wild, wacky, conspiracy type, and noticed these "chemtrails" long before this became a worldwide topic. I'm convinced they are not normal commercial air traffic. And I'd like to know what they are soon. On days when there is heavy chemtrail action, I go in the house. This article is nothing but an opinion of the writer and it's apparent that he is trying to discredit all those who see and notice the difference between contrails and chemtrails. Why?

Why won't the government just tell us what the hell chemtrails are? I've taken movies and pics, and some go from the ground straight vertically up! NO JETS FLY in that pattern. Sometimes, you even see the "black line" phenomenon. I've seen that twice... where the chemtrail casts a sort of shadow under it. Once driving from Calabasas to Los Angeles. It's quite freaky and completely unnatural.

It's so bad in LA some days that a once-blue sky is white by the end of the day, all without any clouds. I can literally watch these trails come out of the planes (that are so high up you can barely see them), sit there and spread out for hours.

I'm sorry but that was NOT going on 15 years ago.

Unlike many so-called "conspiracy theorists," I don't claim to know what their purpose are. I'd like to think it's actually some plan to combat global warming, or something to that effect. However, to deny it's going on is completely batshit crazy. All you have to do is look up.

And it does go on world-wide because I was on a message board once and they posted pics from I think Norway. Apparently it goes on everywhere, and NOT just major metropolitan areas.

It's crazy to me that more people don't notice it. It's right in front of your face. Watch a jet fly from the airport. The contrail dissipates in a couple of minutes, if even that long. Then, watch one of those streaks go across the sky and spread out for HOURS.

WHY?

I know bog all about con trails, but here's an important point about conspiracy theories in general.

Power can't train us from birth explicitly to avoid power unfriendly theories; so it has to come up with a cryptic method of doing the same thing: It tells us to adjure paranoid theories and conspiracy theories because 98 times out of a hundred these are power unfriendly.

Try it: Think of a non-paranoid theory of something, say 911, then think of a paranoid one. Which is the least power friendly?

Before adding to conspiracy theories as just that, it is a shame he hasn't done ANY research into them...Like aliens, crop circles, chemtrails, etc.
Maybe he should go to Google - more - video and do a search for The Disclosure Project Briefing and watch what 21 former US Govt. workers had to say (they were from the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, Air Force, CIA, NSA, DOD, NRO, FBI and FEMA) about UFOs and other related issues. As far as chemtrails has he EVER seriously looked at the skies in the last 21 years...give me a break, contrails my butt. Contrails go away in minutes these lines that expand don't for days.

The delight about a conspiracy theory (or any theory by definition) is that it has yet to be proven true OR false. Once the conspiracy theories come out though, there are often an army of nuts and naysayers who will dilute the important information.
I personally have no idea if there are government programs designed to spray toxins on the general public, this is the first I have heard of it. I DO know that the CIA performed tests in the 60's in San Francisco where innocent civilians were unknowingly dosed with LSD so they could study the effects. This experiment was documented and information about this was released many years after the fact. At the time I am sure many people thought this to be a ridiculous rumor as well. But it happened, a purely idiotic, government funded conspiracy to perform experiments on an ignorant civilian population.
This one event does not imply that all conspiracy theories are correct, far from it, but it should indicate that this kind of behavior is possible and has occurred on many occasions.
I am not the person to tell you that there are aliens watching us or secret government programs behind every locked door, but I do believe the human heart is capable of anything. Any form of deceit, murder, torture, or enslavement that you can imagine is happening right now all over the world. There are crazy people out there and not all of them are poor vagrants on street corners or foreign dictators, some are in corner offices on the top floor of banks or government offices in the Pentagon.
You don't have to believe in conspiracy theories but if you don't realize that mass torture exists or that money is manipulated for the benefit of the few or that population control as an issue is studied by governments and think tanks all over the world or that media is not controlled from the top down, well I am not sure what to tell you.

Those who are in a position to really affect the world around them, whether through personal drive or wealth, believe they are as just and right as everybody else.
I guess we will sit back and hope they are.

What a fetching illustration for the lead story today! The design department at Alternet certainly can't be accused of subtlety. Even though chemtrails are an odd thing to believe in, the skepticism on display in this dismissive article is more worrying than the basic questions being asked by some chemtrail investigators.

I put my own feelings on hold after reaching a dead end with many of the observations on offer concerning this phenomenon... I don't totally follow Scott Steven's line of questioning, for instance, nor can I accept the depopulation scenario... and yet, the fact remains: these streaks in the skies are present some days more than others, and the strange patterns which don't conform to regular flight paths (know your local air routes!) are very intriguing to me.

Zaitchik should follow his own smug advice: watching the skies for any length of time on a clear 'spray day' will assuredly NOT reveal fluffy bunnies or sprawling dragons. These lines in the sky, for whatever reason, turn into odd smudges that last for hours and spread out in ways that normal contrails never have in the history of physics. I have been watching the skies for years after following up on a buddy's 'conspiracy theory', and I overcame initial suspicions enough to believe that something bizarre is taking place up there.

If nothing else, what I learned about HAARP or other military secrets which have been recently revealed can be credited to acknowledging the mystery of chemtrails. I will not be surprised to see an expose of this covert operation appear in a few year's time. I can't venture a guess as to what is going on at present, but I've learned to keep an open mind about this phenomenon. I call it 'speculating', not 'conspiracy theories'!

The best way I can think of to cover up a real conspiracy is to trot out some goofball or other with a totally outlandish and off the wall conspiracy theory; give him and his small band of cultish followers, if he has any, some face-time on TV and air time on radio just to lend him an air of respectability; then round up some academics to dissect and ultimately discredit the wacko's grand conspiracy theory; meanwhile the real conspiracy, which is not as far fetched or far reaching as the wacko's theory would lead one to believe, is effectively buried.

So why are we discussing contrails, or rather "Chemtrails"?

Because jet contrails do effect weather, hence climate. In fact a 2000 Environmental Protection Agency fact sheet unequivocally states in it summery:Contrails are composed primarily of water (in the form of ice crystals) and do not pose health risks to humans. They do affect the cloudiness of the Earth’s atmosphere, however, and therefore might affect atmospheric temperature and climate (emphasis added)."

So what might the real conspiracy behind this "chemtrails" conspiracy?

Most contrails in the continental United States come from domestic jet airliners. If the Obama administration, or any future administration, decides to do something to eliminate or, at the very least, slow contrail formation, then goodbye airline industry as we now know it. At least that must be the fears of airline executives.

So by surreptitiously promoting these "chemtrail" nutcases the airline industry is off the hook vis-a-vis climate change. Once the "chemtrail" conspiracy is thoroughly discredited and debunked, airline executives can tell the public, "See, our contrails are nothing more than happy little rain-cloud makers. So when you look up into the sky, that's not the hot exhaust of a jet engine you see. That's a baby rainbow." Or some such nonsense.

Then it's back to business as usual without the bad old EPA breathing down the airline industry's neck thanks to some nice men in Congress. While the rest of us rest assured that those contrails overhead in no way contribute to the degradation of our worldwide climate.

As one who has greatly benefited from Reichian psychoanalysis practiced by a very experienced therapist in order to address the fallout from multiple trauma, I also object to this article, especially the lumping of Wilhelm Reich with "discredited" theories. Considering the immoral, greedy, disgusting behavior being revealed daily on a mass scale in connection with the economic meltdown globally, I put nothing beyond the imagination and means of the military-industrial-Big Pharma hegemony.

Chemical or not contrails are changing the world as we know it. PBS has a documentary explaining the process, how it was discovered, and what it means for the future. To ignore this or any other conspiracy theory is OK since they are distractions from the greatest imminent threat. Everything is a conspiracy, from the manufacturer to the advertiser, using all forms of the media to get the masses to but a product or believe an ideal. Lobbying congress, to pass laws that transfer the wealth of the many to the benefit of the few, is a conspiracy. Mr. Zaitchik touched on the imminent global disaster when he mentioned the Illuminati and the New World Order. Why the Bilderberg Group, the Central Banking system, Council On Foreign Relations ect., ect. were left out, I don't know. Well, maybe the author was concentrating on Chemtrails and I'm rambling about the Geopolitical atmosphere, because thats what is going to kill us off decades before pollution of any kind.

Without some hysterical twit bleating "the sky is falling!" It's what you DON'T see that's killing us, and that's CO2, carbon dioxide, you know the stuff that makes the bubbles in soda and beer, THAT harmless stuff, except it's far from harmless, especially in the vast quantities we're artifically putting into our atmosphere every minute of every day. In my opinion, the two most deadly threats to our "civilized" way of life are archaic thinking which allows our population to explode while ignoring its obvious implications, and ignoring the CO2 time bomb, which science assures us could soon cause massive flooding of places such as Bangladesh, New York, and Florida, to name a few. The flooding is minor compared to severe climate changes, massive famine, and deadly social upheaval, as a result of competition for depleted resources. The author uses mockery and verbal abuse of the subject issue as well as government sources as factual evidence against the topic’s theory. Other than an aggressive article in disagreement with the topic there is no allowance for support of the issue aside from the US Government and Armed Forces – people who “know better” it would seem.
Consider the offhand dismissal of global warming during the late 1990’s. Can one imagine such an offhand dismissal of the subject at this date? It is my opinion that Americans and the worldwide internet audience do not need to endure such offhand mockery of what many consider to be of great importance from a news-source such as Alter Net. The world has suffered much from the offhand mockery of immensely important issues from the shrill pundits of the corporate right.
One should ask for a better quality of reporting and from Alter Net contributors.
The amount of aerosol material pumped into the atmosphere by each jet aircraft is immense and should be of concern in that subject alone.
The additional issues surrounding this subject are that the jet-engine aerosol consists of various nano-particles, heavy metals and potentially lethal chemicals; scientifically documented and linked with URL’s on any of the websites so quickly dismissed by the author.
This issue will not go away even with the type of shrill offhand dismissal exhibited by the author. Thank goodness the topic of Global Warming has not suffered the fate of such offhand dismissals.
Why does Alter Net choose to publish an offhand dismissal of this issue of great importance to millions of people around the world?

an extraordinary article that shows clearly how Alternet is an agency of propaganda, and a poor one. this article that attempts to debunk chemtrails is missing the most important piece.

i used think that chemtrails were just a paranoid suspicion. i used to scoff at 9/11 truth activists too. until i bothered to get informed in an intelligent and thorough way.

here is an article by the kindly founder of the H Bomb and his speculations about how to avert the effects of global warming. We can a) reduce consumption or b) try this cockamamie plan to scatter throughout the atmosphere aluminum oxide crystals to reflect sunlight back to where it came from. I wonder what one they tried. Anyone who can't see that 9/11 was an inside job, and that there are clearly very suspcious patterns caused frequently by non commercial jets, is not playing with a full deck. they are victims of propaganda, or other psychological conditions which prevent them from seeing something that overwhelms them. i won't pretend to know exactly what chem trails are but it is obviously a real phenomenon and the journalist who wrote this piece is not a real or competent investigator.

but most impressive to me is the quality of the responses to this and other (particularly 9/11 related) propaganda. Alternet should be boycotted. do you think we can orchetrate one from the comments section?

He goes on to tell us to lie down in the grass, look up at the sky and enjoy life.

Is that supposed to be helpful or enlightening?

One of my senators, Kay Bailey Hutchison, introduced weather modification research legislation, s. 1807, but I'm not sure what became of it. There has been other weather modification legislation too.

It never ceases to amaze the number of seemingly intelligent people who subscribe to one or another nefarious grand governmental conspiracy or other.

Having worked in a federal agency let me tell you, the permanent agencies of United States government couldn't put together a conspiracy worth its name if they had to. What conspiracy theorists don't understand is that the federal bureaucracy is made up of hundreds, maybe thousands of individual agencies, staffs and bureaus all fighting for a piece of the federal budget. They only conspire against themselves.

So keep it up conspiracy nuts! While you go chasing after black helicopters and "chemtrails" the real conspiracies are being concocted in Wall Street and main street by your locally elected officials to sell off, piecemeal, public assets to private corporate interests who have no interest in promoting the general welfare.

Yep, all you conspiracy nuts are doing is providing cover for the real villains of this set piece, corporate America and its goal of monetary world domination through globalization.

While I've been watching these "chemtrails" for well over a decade, I find this article goes a long way to feed into the naive notion the "nothing is going on in the skies besides commercial traffic".

You've lost your credibility with this article as far as i'm concerned. Without actually investigation, or using any time based research, simply publishing a couple of 'opinions' doesn't put the issue to rest.

Jet CONTRAILS consist of ice crystals. Ice is HEAVIER than air and will dissipate and fall, whereas these 'plumes' remain airborne and SPREAD exponentially.

The fact that a democrat is in office doesn't make everything ok.

First our economic leaders, with the connivance of the government, have unquestionably been poisoning us, poisoning the atmosphere and (on the scale of human lifetimes) irreversibly changing the climate in ways that will result in a decreased capacity of the Earth to support human populations. This is science, not speculation. It is easier to see that as a conspiracy, which could be explained in terms of bad people who might be exposed and stopped, than as the outcome of the workings of the system on which we all depend, and it serves the interests of those who profit from that system to distract us with these theories.

Second, it is easy to believe in conspiracies when the whole government functions as an ongoing conspiracy, controlled by a relatively small cabal of super-rich families who manipulate it and the news we get about it to support their activities and preserve their wealth and power. That again is supportable by scientific analysis, although you wouldn't know it from reading the Springfield Republican or watching Fox News. And again, the wingnut conspiracy theorists serve their interests by distracting the public from the real conspiracies, such as the one to start a war in Iraq (now exposed) or with Iran (on hold).

That if you investigate anything that appears strange, or if you disagree with what the corporate-owned MSM reports, or if you are intellectually curious and just don't buy the very crazy (actually) "traditional" beliefs, then you are a conspiracy theorist.

I just want to know what they are spraying, because they are. You can see jets leaving contrails and it's not even close to the same thing. Contrails don't spread out for hours and cover the sky. At least they didn't 15 years ago.

when you walk down the street, can you see your breath? Yeah. What's it do? Makes a little white cloud, right? Then what? It doesn't follow you down the street, does it? People don't walk around in little fog banks, trailing clouds of persistent condensed water vapor wherever they go, do they? No.

The water that is expelled from your lungs turns to a liquid, and then a solid, and then mixes and dissipates into the air around you , all in relatively short order.

Same thing happens with aircraft exhaust.

That's normal. That's what has been observed for decades. That's what we can explain and expect.

Persistent aerosol trails that expand and merge into banks that eventually occlude our beautiful blue skies are another matter.

Clifford Carnicom's name is conspicuously absent from this discussion, so far. I would urge everyone interested to look him up, as he deserves more credit than anyone aforementioned, and probably has way more information than most casual readers care to expose themselves to.

No mention of the physical manifestations that have been experienced on numerous occasions, where there will be a film of dust-like material, or there are chronic respiratory ailments in the area sprayed.

After personally doing research by direct observation and objective findings, I hope you don't lay out in that field too long without a respirator. For all you debunkers that think jet exhaust from air craft leave persistent lines in the sky on a daily basis, do this, go out at night after these persistent contrails

I live in the mountains of Colorado and am aware of chemtrails. I am a pilot and have received the weather training the author mentions. I see regular jet aircraft flights with their contrails, and I also see chemtrails. In addition to the oft-mentioned fact that chemtrails last considerably longer than contrails, there is a silk-web like substance that floats to the ground after the passage of chemtrail planes. These weblike strands hang up in the trees like the strand of a spiders web. They evaporate after about ten minutes, so it's a little hard to capture a sample for analysis.

One early morning (just at dawn), I saw rows of dark clouds one after the other in perfect size and length above my home.

One other time in mid-day I saw three big circles which looked like big bowls of clouds in the sky. One had a funnel coming down in the middle toward the ground.

I have no idea how they got there. They were not normal formations is all I know.

I took digital photos of them. I wish I could show them but I don't think this site allows them.

I live in Moab, Utah and have seen the chemtrails. They do not follow the pattern that regular flights to Salt Lake City do. Once, one stretched, quite low and thick, along the roughly north/south axis of the Moab valley then, at the southern end of the valley, bore sharply eastward. There is no reason for a commercial airliner to fly that pattern or that low and it's never happened again. The chemtrails follow no regular pattern and frequently criss-cross one another in a very short period of time. One morning, I counted a dozen within a couple of hours time. Further, the heaviest concentration of them seems to occur the day before we get rainy weather. I really don't know what they are, but I'm sure they aren't contrails.

The researchers found that everything they tested had jet fuel in it which is a carcinogen.

In any court of Law, the strongest proof of an event's occurance must rest on the being in accordance with natural laws. Any reasonable counter position must present doubts as to the credibililty of those stated laws.
In the case of 9/11, 2 that immediately come to mind are from experienced commercial pilots, (offhand ,I do not have their names), who tell us that it is impossible for the aircraft to have made the turns the aircraft was claimed to have made into the tower.
The 2nd was the collapse of building7, into its footprint from no known cause.I beleive the official report gave it a one sentence remark.

Similarly, the amazing bullet that took about
8 turns through Kennedy and Connerly( who convieniently changed his story to oblige the erratic bullet) remains our official history.

So it is too, with chemtrails where lab analysis has shown the great increase in concentration of both Aluminum and Barium salts , both having applications for using the atmosphere for communication and wave energy potentials, that have been reseached extensively by the military as a "force Multipier and weather controller.

If you wish to present any reasonable counter point, only counter evidence to the physical facts bear weight.

I can't relate to the tone set by the author of this piece. I'm a big fan of AlterNet (the moderators are the best in the business). For the most part the voices are clear, articulate and almost always a good debate emerges. But over the past few days...I dunno, something has shifted. That piece about Palin- please! And now this... I dunno there's just something a bit unsettling in the tone of this piece with phrasing such as:

...back to jet fuel. I am not one of the "gullible chemtrail flock" (sorry but "yuck" to that term)- this is the first I've heard about it but I'm willing to look into it. If that makes me a conspiracy theorist then so be it (besides I'm beginning to think if one is not a conspiracy theorist then one is not paying attention).

However I do know that jet fuel and jet fuel residue IS responsible for the water table being contaminated by perchlorate with devastating effects on our health from hypothyroidism to birth defects to cancer. So in light of these facts perhaps it would be wise to at least consider the possibility that there is something to the chemtrail thing.

I know one thing for certain, when I don't know something for certain then I don't say that I know a thing for certain.

Oops here I go...SORRY... but I can't let the 9/11 thing go that easily. I know for certain that (i) in the most protected country in the world it is more than a little strange that Norad was unable to scramble jets while passenger planes were doing u-turns in the sky; and that (ii) there isn't a single photograph available of a passenger airplane having hit the most protected (and photographed) building in the most protected country in the the world. There's a whole lot more I do know for certain about 9/11 but I try not to get too far off topic.

There are Gov't documents that talk about using chemicals on the public. THEY HAVE USED CHEMICALS ON PEOPLE. When will you get it through your thick skulls that this Govt could care less about you.

I discovered many years ago that chemtrails are linked to Star Wars testing. A New York state weather station had called to inquire of a local Air Force base regarding a chemtrail formation in the sky and was apprised that it was testing for the Star Wars program. In order to make the weapons useful, detailed information regarding atmospheric conditions in every season and for every typical weather pattern are required for every region of the world where those weapons may be expected to perform. I am surprised that AlterNet is entering the debate at this late date and most of all that it’s article seems intent on telling people that they cannot believe their own eyes. Contrails, contrails, poison either way

Whether the evil scientists are clever enough to do what the conspirators say is irrelevant.

How much new air do we get daily?

Whether it be car emissions, plane, factory or any furnace we are “burning down the house” and creating a soup of chemicals in our atmosphere from the burning of fossil fuels which may make this whole question mute for our children’s children.

We study sulfur, a crystalline mineral, which when burned at temperatures above 271 degree F. is vaporized into the upper atmosphere as little crystal mirrors which block solar energy to the surface of the Earth while warming the atmosphere.
Atmospheric warming with global cooling may be the correct perspective.

Now lets mix some of these chemical compounds which result from combustion of fossil fuels and we have high school chemistry in the making. And we get acid rain in all of its varieties.

Jet engines can use other fuels other than kerosene to fly the friendly sky, cars can run on other non carbon based fuels, such as hydrogen, water? Electricity, compressed air, etc. The technology has been available but not compared with cheap fossil fuels.

We have two choices:
Continue the madness of burning fossil fuels and write a note of apology to our future generations.

Or we can end the fossil fuel aspect of the industrial revolution, we can make plastics out of coal and crude, but no more fuel that leaves burned hydrocarbons in the atmosphere.
When a volcano such as Kilauea bleaches its exhaust skyward those elements created in the caldron are bio available in the cycles of life. When we burn the decomposed fodder of fossil fuels we do so by adding synthetic chemicals which have never seen the mouth of a volcano.

This is a pleas which I believe could resonate with everyone save for the oil giants.

No chemicals on the ground, in the air, in our food, in our water, nor in our meds.

We synthesize medications solely for the patents, the profits, when the while willow bark may be the best form of Aspirin, which was synthesized from coal tar.

Whether evil chemtrails or evil contrails like all the water that is, was; All the air we are breathing now is the same air we have been breathing since the beginning, no new air.

I don't have too many posturings about chemtrails that haven't already been posted, but let me just say that I (and friends) have seen the phenomenon first hand, while there were other 'commercial' jets in the sky simultaneously. They are not the same thing. Not even close. What a hack job this author penned.

I will have to agree with the poster above who commented on the subtle yet clear change in Alternet's latest offerings. I posted something to this effect a few weeks back. I no longer check here daily for my news, it just seems as if there's been a shift in journalistic priorities. It is becoming a little too MSM-like for me. As if something, or someone, has taken a vested interest in making Alternet more central.

Both reject, complex or scientific explanations for the fear and favor the simple answer that the faceless other is gulity for all teh world's wrongs. What is the difference between the fear of the Knights Templar vs. the fear of the Freemons or Rothchilds, they are both grounded in the same irrationality. Ever wonder why the so-called "leftist" movement can't seem to get its ass off the ground? Why it stands frozen in the face of hundreds of thousands of murdered civilians in Iraq and hundreds of children killed in Gaza? Every wonder why the "left" could do nothing in face of two obviously stolen presidential elections in 2000 and 2004?

It's quite simple really. What passes for a "left" is actually nothing more than the "official" opposition. Wannabes-- Hoping that one day (especially those "lefties" who pass themselves off as writers) they will find cushy jobs in major media outlets, or cushy well-paying teaching jobs at some well-endowed university.

The left "leadership" is so obsessed with being accepted as "responsible" (with the accompanying whimsical thoughts of future acceptance as pundits on CNN), that they will sell their own children down the sewer. I do not exaggerate here, because in fact, this is exactly what they are doing even while they are too stupid to realize it.

Simply stated: Leftist leadership CANNOT be trusted when and where it counts: Not on the issue of who really organized the "terrorist" attack in America on 9/11/01; not on the issue of who really organized the "terrorist" attack on the World Trade Center in 1993, the Oklahoma City "terrorist" attack-- one can go on and on. Never mind how emasculated the "leftist leadership" has proven to be on the carnage that Israel unleashes whenever it feels like. Because to face up to the fact of these conspiracies would demand that they would have to move beyond rhetorical "radicalism" to hands-on "revolution" and the "left" hasn't had the balls for that since the FBI (and other government agencies) definitively kicked their collective assess in the late 1960's.

The leftist "leadership" can be depended upon to bitch up when it counts and thus there are untold millions who would gladly join it but who know that the leadership is either infiltrated, manipulated, stupid, cowardly or just plain opportunistic. The average "leftist leader" is little more than a George Bush with an "A" average.

Yes, the American "left" is a joke and those so-called "conspiracy theorists" (multi-millions strong) are not going to waste their time listening to or following a bunch of bitch-up artists. Because the left WILL ABSOLUTELY sell you out exactly when and where it counts. And articles like this provides us with documented and definitive proof. In fact, every time comfortable whimps like Noam Chomsky say or write dumb shit like "Oswald was working alone" or "it doesn't matter who did 9/11" the shame I feel makes me almost puke.

In the final analysis, this article was nothing more than one of those "see-I-am-responsible-so-please-give-me-a-job" resume stuffers.

The planet's population is going to be fried, starved and beaten into a hoard begging for world government-- and this will have happened on the watch of America's left: A prototypical toothless tiger without a courageous bone in its body. A little bit of history and technical details about early "chemtrail" aerosol dispersants R&D. USA and former Soviet Union

No, I am not a "conspiracy guy" by any stretch of the imagination, but as is the case with many of the "fringe" topics floating around, there is a small grain of truth at the epicenter of the swirling clouds of so-called conspiracy theories.

Many years ago, I worked for DOE at both Lawrence Berkeley and Los Alamos national labs, my principal interest at the time was in materials science, some aspects of which in current nomenclature is referred to as "nanotechnology".

Believe it or not, there was some theoretical discussions and papers being presented which did cite two specific arenas of research that could conceivably come under the heading of "chemtrails".

One such area of interest was indeed the concept of changing the relative ableto, or reflective index of the upper atmosphere, for several reasons actually.

In the case of the former Soviet Union of the time, there was considerable interest in altering the course of the jetstreams, which are high speed "rivers" of air in the upper atmosphere that affect climatic variations.

In the case of the Russian effort, the idea was to alter the severity of the weather in Siberia and related areas, so that agricultural projects could be successfully implemented in these otherwise unusable regions. I don't know how far their experiments ever got, or even if this was actually tried, but that was their intent of the time.

The other arena of research which might possibly fall into this so-called chemtrail heading was the concept of dispensing micro particulate metallic aerosols into the upper atmosphere to alter the RF reflectivity index of specific layers of the upper atmosphere, in order to create a
