Election 2008

John McCain and the Lying Game

By Joe Klein, Time. Posted September 20, 2008.

John McCain has allowed his campaign to slip the normal bounds of political propriety.

Politics has always been lousy with blather and chicanery. But there are rules and traditions too. In the early weeks of the general-election campaign, a consensus has grown in the political community -- a consensus that ranges from practitioners like Karl Rove to commentators like, well, me -- that John McCain has allowed his campaign to slip the normal bounds of political propriety. The situation has gotten so intense that we in the media have slipped our normal rules as well. Usually when a candidate tells something less than the truth, we mince words. We use euphemisms like mendacity and inaccuracy … or, as the Associated Press put it, "McCain's claims skirt facts." But increasing numbers of otherwise sober observers, even such august institutions as the New York Times editorial board, are calling John McCain a liar. You might well ask, What has McCain done to deserve this? What unwritten rules did he break? Are his transgressions of degree or of kind?

Almost every politician stretches the truth. We journalists try to point out the exaggerations and criticize them, then let the voters decide. When McCain says, for example, that Barack Obama favors a government-run health-care system, he's not telling the truth -- Obama wants a market-based system subsidized by the government -- but McCain's untruth illuminates a general policy direction, which is sketchy but sort of within the bounds. (Obama's plan would increase government regulation of the drug and insurance industries.) Obama has done this sort of thing too. In July, he accused McCain of supporting the foreign buyout of an American company that could lead to the loss of about 8,000 jobs in Wilmington, Ohio. McCain did support the deal, but the job loss comes many years later and was not anticipated at the time. That, however, is where the moral equivalency between these two campaigns ends.

McCain's lies have ranged from the annoying to the sleazy, and the problem is in both degree and kind. His campaign has been a ceaseless assault on his opponent's character and policies, featuring a consistent--and witting--disdain for the truth. Even after 38 million Americans heard Obama say in his speech at the Democratic National Convention that he was open to offshore oil-drilling and building new nuclear-power plants, McCain flatly said in his acceptance speech that Obama opposed both. Normal political practice would be for McCain to say, "Obama says he's 'open to' offshore drilling, but he's always opposed it. How can we believe him?" This persistence in repeating demonstrably false charges is something new in presidential politics.

Worse than the lies have been the smears. McCain ran a television ad claiming that Obama favored "comprehensive" sex education for kindergartners. (Obama favored a bill that would have warned kindergartners about sexual predators and improper touching.) The accusation that Obama was referring to Sarah Palin when he said McCain's effort to remarket his economic policies was putting "lipstick on a pig" was another clearly misleading attack -- an obnoxious attempt to divert attention from Palin's lack of fitness for the job and the recklessness with which McCain chose her. McCain's assault on the "lite media" for spreading rumors about Palin's personal life -- actually, the culprits were a few bloggers and the tabloid press -- was more of the same. And that gets us close to the real problem here. The McCain camp has decided that its candidate can't win honorably, on the issues, so it has resorted to transparent and phony diversions.

This new strategy emerged during the first week of Obama's overseas trip in late July. McCain had been intending to contrast his alleged foreign policy expertise and toughness with Obama's inexperience and alleged weakness. McCain wanted to "win" the Iraq war and face down the Iranians. But those issues became moot when the Iraqis said they favored Obama's withdrawal plan and the Bush Administration started talking to the Iranians. At that point, McCain committed his original sin -- out of pique, I believe -- questioning Obama's patriotism, saying the Democrat would rather lose a war than lose an election. Ever since, McCain's campaign has been a series of snide and demeaning ads accompanied by the daily gush of untruths that have now been widely documented and exposed. The strategy is an obvious attempt to camouflage the current unpopularity of his Republican brand, the insubstantiality of his vice-presidential choice, and his agreement on most issues -- especially economic matters -- with an exceedingly unpopular President.

The good news is that the vile times may be ending. The coming debates will decide this race, and it isn't easy to tell lies when your opponent is standing right next to you. The Wall Street collapse demands a more sober campaign as well. But these dreadful weeks should not be forgotten. John McCain has raised serious questions about whether he has the character to lead the nation. He has defaced his beloved military code of honor. He has run a dirty campaign.

It's more about poor choices than lying (enhanced version of peviously posted comment)

John McCain has a history of making poor choices.

In high school, he had a choice of getting along with other students or antagonizing them. He chose the latter and was nicknamed "McNasty."

At the U.S. Naval Academy, facing a choice of following regulations or not, he violated them. Said Academy graduate Phillip Butler, ex-Navy pilot and former POW who spent eight years in North Vietnamese captivity: "John was intent on breaking every regulation (at the Academy)...and I believe he must have come close to his goal. I could tell many other midshipman stories about John that year and he unbelievably managed to graduate though he spent the majority of his first class year on restriction for the stuff he got caught doing. In fact he barely managed to graduate, standing 5th from the bottom of his 800-man class."

As a stateside Navy pilot before going to Southeast Asia, McCain could have flown recklessly or professionally. McCain chose to fly recklessly, crashing five airplanes before deploying overseas.

In 1970, while a POW and no longer being physically abused by his captors, he agreed to be interviewed by Cuban journalist Fernando Barral. McCain could have refused. Instead, not only did he meet with Barral who exploited the occasion for propaganda purposes, McCain voluntarily conversed in Spanish and accepted special favors from the enemy -- hot coffee and cigarettes -- all blatant violations of the Code of Conduct for U.S. prisoners of war.

Afterwards, the Hanoi Hilton's U.S. commander, SRO Jeremiah Denton, issued an order forbidding POWs to be interviewed by visitors. Said McCain on page 305 of Faith of My Fathers, “[Denton's] decision was a sound one, even though it deprived me of further opportunities to demonstrate my psychic equilibrium… not to mention the [loss of] extra cigarettes and coffee."

After returning home to freedom and his faithful wife who'd spent nearly every waking hour trying to make life easier for him in Hanoi, he chose to commit adultery and then divorce her to marry the "other" woman.

As a senator, McCain chose to involve himself in the 1989 S&L scandal known as the "Keating Five." Despite the adverse publicity, he continued to be chummy with lobbyists and special interest groups for the rest of his political career.

In 1992, while serving on the Senate Select Committee for POW/MIAs affairs, McCain chose to ignore evidence that some U.S. airmen captured by the North Vietnamese were still being held prisoner when he came home in 1973.

Also during the Senate hearings, McCain chose to ignore a letter signed by 50 former POWs asking that the investigation be continued. Instead, he halted the hearings and had the DOD records of all MIAs and POWs sealed, including his own.

In 1994, McCain chose to become president of the New Citizenship Project (NCP), chief funding arm for the Project for the New American Century (PNAC), a rightwing extremist organization founded in 1997.

In 1998, McCain agreed to co-sponsor the Iraq Liberation Act, which was drafted by PNAC.

In 2002, McCain chose to co-chair with Sen. Joe Lieberman the White House-based Committee for the Liberation of Iraq, established that year by PNAC.

In 2004, McCain officially became a PNAC member by signing a letter from the organization that hypocritically condemned Russian President Putin’s foreign policy for its return to the “rhetoric of militarism and empire.”

But John McCain's worst choice of all was picking Sarah Palin for his running mate -- a decision based on winning votes instead of what was good for America. Because he put his political career ahead of national security, McCain is unfit to serve as president of the United States and its commander-in-chief.

It is beginning to look as if the obvious desperation of the McCain camp and his Rovian troupe of advisers has reached a level of panic/anger that they are forced to show their true colors. The extremes they have gone to are so evident that even the MSM is forced (reluctantly, I am sure) to come out of the closet and start calling them on it. They are so off kilter that they are even screaming at their real base (greedy, corrupt corporate and financial CEOs) which can't be making them to happy. Listening to McCain now try to sound like a radical Democrat is hilarious.

By the way, I heard that Cindy told John to stop demeaning her family and their friends and that if didn't stop that he could no longer use her private jet.

A core professed and formal value of anyone who has served in the US Military,as did Sen McCain,is "honor".

Given the depravity and desperation of his Presidential campain- especially of late- where the hell is McCain's honor?

For example, Southern Baptists, the largest Protestant denomination in the US, are completely opposed to even the casual use of alcohol. Here is the resolution from their 2008 convention. Notice that they won't elect an officer to their own convention who uses any alcohol. Yet McCain enjoys a fortune that his second wife made from beer. And about 80% of Southern Baptists say they are voting for McCain.

Resolution No. 5
ON ALCOHOL USE IN AMERICA

WHEREAS, Years of research confirm biblical warnings that alcohol use leads to physical, mental, and emotional damage (e.g., Proverbs 23:29-35); and

WHEREAS, Alcohol use has led to countless injuries and deaths on our nation's highways; and

WHEREAS, The breakup of families and homes can be directly and indirectly attributed to alcohol use by one or more members of a family; and

WHEREAS, The use of alcohol as a recreational beverage has been shown to lead individuals down a path of addiction to alcohol and toward the use of other kinds of drugs, both legal and illegal; and

WHEREAS, There are some religious leaders who are now advocating the consumption of alcoholic beverages based on a misinterpretation of the doctrine of "our freedom in Christ"; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the messengers to the Southern Baptist Convention meeting in Greensboro, North Carolina, June 13-14, 2006, express our total opposition to the manufacturing, advertising, distributing, and consuming of alcoholic beverages; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge that no one be elected to serve as a trustee or member of any entity or committee of the Southern Baptist Convention that is a user of alcoholic beverages.

RESOLVED, That we urge Southern Baptists to take an active role in supporting legislation that is intended to curb alcohol use in our communities and nation; and be it further

RESOLVED, That we urge Southern Baptists to be actively involved in educating students and adults concerning the destructive nature of alcoholic beverages; and be it finally

RESOLVED, That we commend organizations and ministries that treat alcohol-related problems from a biblical perspective and promote abstinence and encourage local churches to begin and/or support such biblically-based ministries.

Did you catch this part: "our total opposition to the manufacturing, advertising, distributing, and consuming of alcoholic beverages"? And yet they are supporting McCain.

The following news report was published by AOL today.

WASHINGTON (Sept. 20) - Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks — many calling them "lazy," "violent" or responsible for their own troubles.

The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 — about two and one-half percentage points.

------------------------------------------------------------

If you think the last eight years under Bumbling Bush were bad, what until McKKKain gets into the Oval Office. There will be, I predict, blood in the streets.

Literally.

The GOP cannot not steal another election, this time with the help of bipartisan bigots, without there being severe repercussions -- from black, brown, yellow and white people who REALLY love America, including yours truly.

I don't think you can blame McCain for this major breach of the social contract in his extensive list of lies and distortions. McCain is simply following in the footsteps of George Bush whose example for the nation is that of a lawbreaker, liar, deceiver, and destroyer of all rules and institutions of civilization. Where the head is rotten, the Haitians tell us, so is the body. George Bush is a rotten exemplar, the rotten head of a rotten political party, and McCain is following Bush because he noticed that Bush won by being rotten.

What a lovely thing to do with your daughter! I would have to choose B, and the reason why is that all the racist "white" people, and in general most "white" people, still don't get it.
The joke is on them! Read "The Seven Daughters of Eve," or watch the Discovery Channel's documentary, "The Original Eve." All anyone has to do is get their DNA checked. Guess what?
We are ALL African Americans!! That's right. Everyone's DNA will go all the way back to Africa. Period. End of story. When this book came out, and the documentary was shown on the Discovery Channel, I thought why isn't this being shown on every single network? It would mean the end of racism. But of course no one covered it. We can't have that. Since I discovered the wonders of U-Tube, I'm planning on making a video about it. So there is my answer and my explanation. I hope you post the results of your survey. Good Luck.

Landmark ethics reform prove Obama is ethical & bi-partisan & the reform candidate
Posted by: foreverhope on Sep 20, 2008 5:17 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
PALIN LIE: “ But listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man who has authored two memoirs but not a single major law or reform - not even in the state senate.”

OBAMA PASSED THE MOST SWEEPING REFORMS SINCE WATERGATE IN BOTH THE ILLINOIS AND US SENATES, AMONG OTHER ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Obama Helped Pass The 2007 Ethics Reform Law, Which Curbed TheInfluence Of Lobbyists And Was Described As The “Most Sweeping Since Watergate.” In the first week of the 110th Congress, Obama joined with Senator Feingold to introduce a “Gold Standard” ethics package.

Many of the Obama/Feingold bill’s most important provisions were includeding the final ethics reform package passed by the Senate in late January: a full ban on gifts and meals from lobbyists including those paid by the firms that employ lobbyists; an end to subsidized travel on corporate jets; full disclosure of who's sponsoring earmarks and for what purpose; additional restrictions to close the revolving door between public service and lobbying to ensure that public service isn't all about lining up a high-paying lobbying job; and requiring lobbyists to disclose the contributions that they "bundle" - that is,collect or arrange - for members of Congress, candidates, and party committees. In January 2007, the Washington Post wrote in aneditorial that “…Mr. Reid, along with Sens. Russell Feingold (D-Wis.)and Barack Obama (D-Ill.), deserves credit for assembling and passing this package.” In September 2007, the AP reported, “President Bush signed a bill Friday that will require lawmakers to disclose more about their efforts to fund pet projects and raise money from lobbyists, a measure that backers call the biggest ethics reform in decades…Sen. Barack Obama, D-Ill. who had pushed for the bundling provisions and was one of four lawmakers who participated in a Democratic conference call to reporters said the measure marks "the most sweeping ethics reform since Watergate.” [S. 230, 110thCongress; S.1, Became Public Law 109-110-81, 9/14/07; AP, 9/15/07;The Washington Post, Editorial, 1/21/07]

Obama Passed Illinois State Gift Ban Act “Heralded As the Most Sweeping Good-Government Legislation in Decades.” In 1998, Obama passed the Illinois Gift Ban that prohibited legislators, state officers and employees, and judges from soliciting or receiving gifts from a person or entity with interests affected by government. TheChicago Tribune wrote, “Gov. Jim Edgar signed into law Wednesday anethics and campaign finance package heralded as the most sweeping good-government legislation in decades.” The law also required greater campaign finance disclosure and limited the uses for which raised money could be spent. Obama said, “I have seen a general cynicism from taxpayers about government. They believe they have no influence on the process since they don't have the money of special interest groups. With the gift ban and the ban on Springfield fund-raisers that are contained in this legislation, I think at least some of this confidence will be restored.” [HB672, 3R P 52-4-1, 5/22/98; PA90-0737, 8/12/98; Chicago Tribune, 8/13/98; Chicago IndependentBulletin, 6/4/98]

Illinois Ethics Bill Most Far Reaching Since Watergate,Product Of Bipartisan Work. The St. Louis Post-Dispatch wrote ofObama’s bill, “The ethics restrictions would be the most far-reaching since the Watergate-era campaign financial disclosure law. They are the product of months of negotiations among two lawmakers of each party, other state officials and Mike Lawrence. He is an aide to former Sen. Paul Simon, a Democrat, and used to be an aide to Edgar, aRepublican.” [St. Louis Post-Dispatch, 5/24/98]

Did the McCain campaign back-channel the race card through Ron Fournier?

Mr. Fournier, America has no time for cheap political ploys such as the article you wrote when Americans are trembling at this moment in time worrying about their financial futures. To Senator McCain and anyone within your campaign if this is a back-channel article to play on America’s emotions, you, Sir, do not belong in the highest elected office in the land. We Americans have far more important issues to deal with. Plus we are sick and tired of being feared.

OBAMA IS OUR ONLY HOPE

We have soaring oil prices as we are sitting on the 2nd biggest oil deposit in the world, while oil companies are making record profits. We pay billions in taxes for private corporate armies that are above the law. Like with Bush this will continue with McCain. On Bill Moyers Mickey Edwards and Matt Welch (now on the internet) two conservatives discussed who McCain really is. McCain is also a trigger happy Neo Con big on preemptive strikes and military spending. He is a corporate guy big on fabricated wars with no accountability.

“It's often said that when Mickey Edwards speaks conservatives listen.”

“MATT WELCH: People forget this, but in 1999 and 2000, when McCain was running against George Bush, he was the neoconservative candidate. You know, four years before the doctrine of preemptive war ever even occurred to Bush.” REMEMBER WAR = PROFITS FOR THEM AND DEBT FOR US. THE US IS THE BIGGEST ARMS DEALER IN THE WORLD SUPPORTING 761 MILITARY BASES AROUND THE WORLD THAT WE PAY FOR. MORE THEN ANY NATION IS HISTORY.

Our Government is broken. we are in the biggest fiscal crisis in 100 years. Checks, balances and protections have been wiped out. The housing collapse lost nest eggs for tens of millions and the value of homes destroyed. Now you and your children can starve or die in the gutter with no protections or safety nets. What do you think our tax dollars should pay for anyway? McCain is a Bush clone and he will put the nails on our economic coffin if he gets in. The real war on terror is right here. It’s an economic war and we are the victims of an abusive regime that has sucked us dry. If you want to see how totally corrupt it is you can watch IRAQ FOR SALE: THE WAR PROFITEERS on Comcast on demand or the internet. Then you will know what your son’s and daughter’s really died for.

From Bill Moyers The Journal: THE DENVER REALITY “The rules of the game keep changing. For example: Colorado's largest utility - expects to shut off power to 72,000 homes; it’s part of a nationwide trend: Shutoffs are up thirty percent in Chicago, more than fifty percent in Detroit. A record number have fallen behind on their utility bills.

If McCain gets in you can kiss social security, affordable health care and Medicare goodbye. We paid for these safey nets remember? and it was the Democrats who gave them to us. They are bailing out the companies but not us. This election is not about right or left, black or white IT IS ABOUT UP OR DOWN.
McCains track record has been pro deregualtion and privatization that takes our tax dollars with no accountabilty to the tax payers and illiminates government oversight that protects us. Ask yourself, what really is national security all about?

WAKE UP AMERICA

So vote with your mind. Think Obama/ Biden.

How Barack Obama can defeat John McCain without calling him a liar
Posted by: NoMcCainPalin on Sep 21, 2008 7:14 AM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
McCain's Achilles heel is his advanced age.

In article published in June 2008 by Military.com, former POW Phillip Butler, a Navy pilot and U.S. Naval Academy graduate who spent more than eight years in North Vietnam as a prisoner of war, explained why he would not support McCain for the presidency.

"Most of us who survived that experience [being a POW] are now in our late 60’s and 70’s. Sadly, we have died and are dying off at a greater rate than our non-POW contemporaries. We experienced injuries and malnutrition that are coming home to roost. So I believe John’s age (71) and survival expectation are not good for being elected to serve as our President for four or more years."

There are many Republicans who share Butler's concerns, as do the 30% of white Democrats who won't vote for Obama because he's black (according to a recent Yahoo poll). But no matter how well he argues his case, those people will NEVER support him. So Barack must get them to vote AGAINST McCain or not vote at all.

That goal can be accomplished with a simple slogan: "John McCain -- OLD Ideas, OLD Solutions."

Notice I never mentioned his age (72), but the message comes through loud and clear. And should the GOP complain about the inference, it will only bolster suspicions that McCain's best days are behind him.

If you agree with my assessment, tell your friends and family members while there's still time to defeat McCain -- a pandering politician who truly has old ideas, old solutions.

John McCain --OLD Ideas, OLD Solutions

Both candidates can't be 'candid'.

The Wall St mess, the housing mess, the derivative mess are all the fault of both parties.Through at least two administrations, three if you like(Bush I, II, and Clinton) Banks, insurance cos, investment banks and venture capital funds have been allowed to merge without govt interference, deal with exotic derivatives that had no inherent asset value, and escape meaningful oversight. Charles Schumer is as responsible as Phil Gramm.

Obama effort to politicize these problems shows he's either ignorant of what's gone on for 25 years or is an outright liar. Given Obama's massive support from the very Wall St firms that are in trouble, as well as his taking millions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, it's clear he is on the take. As for McCain, he did warn about these schemes especially with Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. But then he took the money from Wall St anyway. Moreover, as Chair of the Telecom subcommittee in the 90's, he helped deregulate telephone and directory services. He's benefitted from the telecom industry generosity ever since. Both Obama and McCain are advised by lobbyists either on the payroll or on unpaid duty(which is the same as teh payroll, because then they can advise, have influence, and still make millions in lobbying.) Obama is a hypocrite when he says McCain is surrounded by lobbyists. So is Obama; it's just that Obama's are unpaid advisors who will have access to Obama officials if and when Obama is elected.

Almost every politician stretches the truth. We journalists try to point out the exaggerations and criticize them, then let the voters decide.

"Point them out", when John McCain makes them? Not hardly! "Criticize", my rosy Irish patoot! Not until the past two weeks has the MSM, of whome Klein is certainly one, even begun to mention McCain's most grotesque lies and errors. And only McCain got this free pass.

McCain was emboldened to "cross the line" the same way Wall Street has been -- when nobody calls them on breaking the rules, your normal pirate will take it as permission, approval, and encouragement.

President Bush (current) once said "you must continue to repeat the propaganda until it sinks in". That's exactly what McCain and his campaign are doing with the false advertisements and it is rather shocking that after the full contents of particulair quotes have been presented to his supporters-educated ones at that they still stick to their notions that McCain's assertions are correct. Amazing!!
