Election 2008

Michelle Introduces Who the Obamas Really Are: Just Like All of Us

By Steven Rosenfeld, AlterNet. Posted August 26, 2008.

Michelle Obama gives an inspiring and intimate introduction to her family's all-American success story. And: Ted Kennedy passes the torch.

On the first night of the Democratic Convention in Denver, Michelle Obama reintroduced to the Obama family and its values as an all-American success story to the country. Her speech drew a rousing reception, and also on Sunday DNC attendants watched Sen. Ted Kennedy make an emotional passing of the party's torch to Barack Obama.

Michelle Obama took the stage after a video was shown that described her parents as working class Americans who did not go to college but sacrificed for their children while instilling values of family loyalty, hard work and community service. Those values -- of a family that watches over each other, and urges and supports its members to achieve their best -- was not only her story, but the story of her marriage, and Barack Obama's upbringing as well, she said.

"Barack (also) was raised by grandparents who were working class, and who saved so the kids could have opportunities that they didn't have," Michelle Obama said, "You work hard ... Your word is your bond ... You treat people with dignity and respect, even if you don't know them, or you don't agree with them."

Michelle Obama described how she met Barack Obama while they worked at a law firm they both ended up leaving for community service work. She described how they started dating. Michelle Obama said she went with Barack Obama to meetings on the south side of Chicago where he was trying to help steel workers whose plants recently had closed.

She recalled Barack Obama talking to the steel workers -- as he would to many people throughout his political career -- about the difference between "the world as it is" and "the world as it should be." She said Barack Obama has worked for years to bridge that gap. "All of this is driven by the simple belief that the world as it is just won't do," she said, adding, "That is why I love this country."

Introducing the party's nominee on the first night of a national political convention is standard fare. However, Michelle Obama's personal speech was a striking departure from the often-staid speeches at these forums. People who have seen Michelle Obama speak say she often talks personally; reporters and others who have followed her over the years say her performance on Monday showcased the more earnest and empathetic sides of her personality, in contrast to prior political campaigns.

The speech's emphasis on familiar family values was underscored by its finale, when Barack Obama spoke by video to Michelle Obama and his two daughters, who joined their mother at the podium, while the convention hall and television audience watched. During her speech, Michelle Obama repeatedly said her children were the center of her life, and seeing their interactions at the evening's close emphasized the more ordinary side of an undoubtedly extraordinary family.

The Obama children ignored the audience and television cameras and excitedly asked their father about the other kids in the room with him -- who were watching Michelle Obama's speech from Kansas City. The exchange was typical of any family with two young children; it was as endearing as it was devoid of any rough edges.

What a brilliant woman and what a contrast to Teresa Heinz who, in a similar situation, never mentioned John Kerry at all. Michelle Obama is the brightest, most accomplished, in her own right, woman to be our First Lady. She set out to normalize the so called "elitist, exotic" Obama and no one could have done it better. I love her.

foisted upon us. If you think it's useless to vote because the deck has been stacked, if you think you should vote for a third party because the Democrats are as bad as the Republicans, then you are thinking exactly what the neo-con manipulators want you to think.

Yes, electoral fraud is a scandal which has been glossed over by the MSM. Yes, it is likely to happen again. But it is damn hard to fool all of the people all of the time. Electoral fraud is tantamount to treason and can and should be treated as such.

Yes, the Democratic Party has been almost as bad as the Republicans, but at least it is grounded in respect for the poor and disadvantaged and can much more easily confront privilege for the rich. Put a sympathetic and intelligent man in the White House and make him live up to his rhetoric. Look at Obama's voting record before you back a third party candidate and remember that third party votes have elected Republican presidents who have stacked the Supreme Court.

Don't be defeated by defeatism.

CONTRIVANCE

I vowed I would not watch the Democratic "Coronation" of Barack Obama as its predictable (& unfortunate) next nominee. I could not bear to watch the bloodless, choreographed silliness that has replaced the real conventions that used to be.

As Jody Powell said the other day, who wants to watch a car race if there are not going to be any wrecks?

But, as I went to bed last night, I habitually turned on my radio to NPR and was forced to LISTEN to Michelle Obama's speech. What I heard was a halting, clumsy deliverance of a speech obviously written by someone else. I heard Michelle Obama step on applause several times, and it was an obvious contrivance that was manufactured by some consulting "suit" backstage who told her exactly what to say and how to say it.

Like most of the rest of the convention, there was absolutely no spontaneity to the speech that I heard.

I felt sorry for Michelle Obama. She has been subjected to a lot of stupid indignities this year, and this was just the latest insult to her her intellect and her integrity.

Now, I shall just leave my radio turned off, too.

YEAH Teddy!!!
What a great speech! Not only did he state the 'Kennedy Torch' has been official passed, but went straight to the heart of the problem which has plagued the Dem party for over 2 decades- THE DLC!
The Torch was never passed to the Clintons- they tried to steal it.Damn that must have hit Billy right in the gut!LOL.He's not only lost his claim of being the 'first Black Pres', bu talso the Bearer of the JFK torch. That's what happens when you 'ASS U ME'
As for the DLC he made rather clear that bastardizing the Democrats platform to appease Corps, IS NOT a Dem Value.
I Loved Leach (R) too discussing what happened to the Republican party-reminding US both parties have been Infiltrated and Contaminated by Corporationists, like the Clintons and Bush's
It is time to pull back the Curtain on this 'Third Rail ' Party which has not only undermined our Democracy, but our economy and our standing in the World.THEY have been the force & source which has caused such wide spread devastation, such hatred and fear...It's Profitable. It is not the elephant, nor Donkey, nor a flag of Stars & Strips...It has been the sign of many LOGO's which has run this country and our Global neighbors in to the Ditch. They have been sucking Humankind and our Planet Dry for Decades!
Even though I voted for Bill 2x's I was Proud to hear the ol' 'Liberal Lion' give them the big 'Fuck You!'

I think Michelle Obama was fantastic. However there was nothing new about their family, it has always been there if you bothered to look. What I do is flip between CNN and Fox just to watch the pundits. They may be in the mile high city, but the pundits ended up in the tower of Babel, slam bam thank you mam. James Carval and David Gergen shot off their mouths and really showed their age, they have one foot on the train to senileville. They better stop whining about Obama not doing what a smart politician should do; Obama told them in the beginning that he was different. They better stop trying to see Obama through their eyes or it is going to be all over, and they will be scratching their heads trying to figure out what just happened. The foxes were even worse, but they have been in lala land since the Clinton administration. What did Michelle do besides show millions of Americans that they were making the same mistake as the pundits? How about, call me an elitist now you son of an admiral with a house of seven mansions. How about, who is the real American now Hannity? Sing your bad black preacher, bad black Muslims, and bad black Obama song and wrap yourself in American body bags, sing it loud I’m fox and I’m proud. Man, can that girl play dozens. Tonight maybe Gergen will get what he wants, and Hannity will lose his divide and conquer strategy.

i consider myself somewhat of a cynic. i dont really think anyone in politics can be trusted. but there is definitely a better man for the job in this case. with all of the comments on here, i wonder why a lot of you still choose to live in this country. its not that hard to leave. you were born american, which means you have the opportunity to fly, work and live in a lot of different countries around the world. why dont you do that? instead of sitting here, bitching about this government. i think you will soon realize that all governments are corrupt. and this is a pretty ok place to live, work, get an education and participate in the democratic process. although a bit contrived, i found michelle obama's speech somewhat inspiring and hopeful. look at the positive! even if you dont agree with everything or anything obama stands for, history is about to be made. and we are a part of it.

She was brilliant last night, a breath of fresh air. The audience was dumb-struck and she never missed a beat. They are a devoted family and appear to have the country's best interest at heart. They both realize that running a country for 1-2% of the people is not a winning strategy. So Obama knows what's wrong. It can't change overnight, but knowing what's wrong is the only place to start. I'm looking forward to hearing his acceptance speech, but Michele will be a tough act to follow. Thanks, ANNA

The speech was good. Although Michelle was given a common grammatical error to speak in its beginning--the old dangling participle. Unforgivable for a professional speechwriter to do, if that's who wrote the piece. After the speech--when the kids came out and Barack came on--this part was uncomfortable to watch. Too many seconds of dead silence; Barack was introducing people who couldn't be seen onscreen (I watched on PBS); Barack seemed like he couldn't follow what was happening onstage in Denver, and the mic should have been gently taken away from the younger child after the second blurting-out. It was like sitting in a restaurant and having the kid in the next booth lean over the seat and just stare at you, waiting to be adored, while his parents do nothing. It was annoying and embarrassing to hear the stridency and disjointedness of it all. I blame the producers and directors, as well as the brainchild whose idea it was to bring the kids on without any structure. For me, a letdown after a good speech.

There I've said it. She is articulate, intelligent, warm and loving in her own right. She cares about her family, her children and most of all her man. She stands for the "family values" that Repugnicans give lip service to, yet cannot maintain.

Yes, I think she would be the one to tell her husband that he's wrong when it's time. And you can tell that they are a loving family. Now it's time to roll up our collective sleeves and fight for what we know needs to be done.

Adlai Stevenson was a great Democrat who was forced into defeat only because the media and his detractors went overboard in exploiting his weakness that he just so happened to be single due to divorce. Now Ike wasn't too bad but like Clinton he too had an extramarital affair. And by the way, RAYGUN went through divorce but just so happened to marry a DRAG QUEEN ! I don't care if you're conservative, liberal, progressive, libertarian, green, or whatever. The fact is more than race and gender, when it comes to running for office, singles are treated badly. To hell with Cindy Mccain and Michelle Obama. Ralph Nader may not be married but at least he's a true progressive and liberal and he'd SMASH Obama and Mccain were he allowed into the debates. Of course, so too would Mckinney or maybe even Barr although he's just an opportunist. For the past 52 years, nothing has changed about marriage and presidency. Why can't a single, man or woman, be given equal honor and respect? And you people call yourselves "progressives" and/or "liberals" ?!?!? SHAME ON YOU FOR GOING ALONG WITH THE MEDIA IN TREATING CANDIDATES' SPOUSES AS CELEBRITY DOGSHITS !!!!

Four years ago, I shook my head in disbelief at THK's ridiculously silly convention speech. What a liability. In contrast, today I am so happy that Michele Obama knocked one out of the park last night. No, it wasn't perfect, but it was really good.

Those here on Alternet who are more progressive than the mainstream Democrats won't be happy with Obama and I understand that. We're getting baby steps instead of sprints and that can be frustrating.

But the swing voters that haven't made up their mind yet due to fair or unfair portrayals of how different the Obamas are from the rest of us may just start to realize how normal they really are, and that's a benefit for Obama.

IF Obama/Biden win the presidency, Obama and Michelle would be better off trading positions. In other words, Michelle becomes president and Obama is first husband. And voila, the first female minority elected ! How bad can that be ? Maybe she won't sell out unlike her husband, yes?

hits don't indicate support, interest or opposition. unless you're selling ads or subscriptions, you can 't objectively measure support.

I'm sorry Hugh was banned even though I find him intolerant, narrow and incapable of recognition of the potential legtimacy of views not his. If he has however apologized, he should be reinstated.

I do wish he would stop posting the same material. It does not widen the antiMcCain opposition and indeed trivilizes the depth of Obama's support.

everyone is obviously aware that this whole spectacle is a spectacle. it's strategic and rehearsed and fake. that's fine. it was SUCCESSFUL, not authentic (thank god), and i'm sure almost every person on this website saw it or read about it or will see it. the job of this particular "reporter" for alternet seems to be forwarding emails directly from the obama campaign's facebook website and posting them up here as news stories. reminds me of katie couric commenting on the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade and mistaking it for Che.

I believe that if you vote you should be familiar with the candidates political agenda; not because what s/he says 'makes' you feel good. I you want to feel good, sniff some dope. Hope and dope are very politically powerful narcotics; voting is a very dangerous thing if not used properly.

but it needs to be heard over again until this ridiculous notion of the Obama'a "elitism" is finally laid to rest. It seems to me that way too many people do not expect for black people to have higher aspirations outside of rapper, stripper or baby mama. Too many people believe the hype that black people aren't willing to work hard to succeed or to instill those values in their children. Too many people are quick to believe the worst stereotypes about blacks and then act all surprised that not all of us have our pants sagging down to our kneecaps or are video "ho's". It seems to surprise so many that many blacks are just like Barack and Michelle Obama when it shouldn't come as a shock at all. Then again, too many people are so lacking in even the most basic of critical thinking skills--even my liberal bretheren--that they can't quite grasp the notion of black people who don't look like they came straight outta Compton, even though they may have. So instead we get idiots who challenge Barack's "blackness" as if they are the final arbiters of what that means. The answer, btw is simple--"blackness", is as diverse as we black people themselves are. It cannot be reduced down to some corporate-generated denominator.

So no, Michelle Obama didn't break any new ground with her speech, and in a way it's sad that she had to spend so much time trying to once again show that her family is the AMERICAN FAMILY. Instead she hammered home a point that should be apparent to all Americans--that under the skin we all have dreams and goals and want better for our country and our families. Too bad that her message is going to be lost. Some people just can't give up their willful and comfortable ignorance.

Both Obamas are very different from the rest of us. They are a lot smarter than most of us, have a lot more drive and determination than most of us, they have taken advantage of every opportunity offered to them and made a lot of opportunities for themselves,... In short, they are both exceptionally gifted and skilled people. We have lived through 8 years of a president who other than being born rich and politically well connected was too much like the average american in his knowledge of the world, level of intellectual curiousity, willingness to work hard,...

I don't want the next US president to be like most Americans, I want the next US president to be exceptional, to be a person who will do a great job as president, not someone who would prefer to be sucking down a few beers while watching a ball game.

That was the kind of oratory you people consider inspirational? Her speech was lackluster at best. As a previous poster already mentioned, it was extremely contrived and rehearsed. She faltered so much because she couldn't manage to buy into her own bullshit.

She came across as completely disingenuous and yet you people lap it up like so many tail-wagging puppies. They represent the great American success story, do they? Two ATTORNEYS with Ivy League pedigrees who are gonna fix the evils brought about by yet more Ivy League ATTORNEYS. Time for some goddamn critical thinking folks. No wonder we're in so much trouble. Hope springs eternal but so it seems does stupidity.

Solely by virtue of their ethnicity is this dynamic juridical duo gonna make it all better in much the same way that a female speaker of the house brought *rolls eyes skyward* decency and level-headedness to the Senate.

You don't think the Obamas have, perchance, learned a thing or two about lying, cheating and stealing from the white criminals with whom they've been associated for the last 20 years, do you? Yeah, Michelle and Barack - just normal people who truly love this country and want to do right by the middle class. If you believe that, I've got a bridge to sell you.

While oil prices are soaring we are sitting on the 2nd biggest oil deposit in the world, while oil companies are making record profits at the piump, and we paying billions in taxes for private corporate armies that are above the law. Like Bush/Chaney this will continue with McCain. On Bill Moyers Mickey Edwards and Matt Welch ( now on the internet) two conservatives discussed who McCain really is. McCain is also a trigger happy Neo Con who is big on preemptive strikes and military spending and a corporate guy who is hot for fabricated wars with no accountability.

“It's often said that when Mickey Edwards speaks conservatives listen.”

“MATT WELCH: People forget this, but in 1999 and 2000, when McCain was running against George Bush, he was the neoconservative candidate. You know, four years before the doctrine of preemptive war ever even occurred to Bush.”

Our Government is broken. Checks, balances and protections have been wiped out. The housing collapse lost nest eggs for tens of millions and the value of homes destroyed. Now you and your children can starve or die in the gutter with no protections or safety nets. What do you think our tax dollars should pay for anyway? McCain is a Bush clone and he will put the nails on our economic coffin if he gets in. The real war on terror is right here. It’s an economic war and we are the victims of an abusive regime that has sucked us dry. If you want to see how totally corrupt it is you can watch IRAQ FOR SALE: THE WAR PROFITEERS on Comcast on demand or the internet. Then you will know what your son’s and daughter’s really died for.

From Bill Moyer's, The Journal: “The rules of the game keep changing. For example: Colorado's largest utility - expects to shut off power to 72,000 homes; it’s part of a nationwide trend: Shutoffs are up thirty percent in Chicago, more than fifty percent in Detroit. A record number have fallen behind on their utility bills.

So vote with your mind. Think Obama/ Biden.

John McCain hasn't lifted a finger to help the thousand of FLDS women and children trapped inside Colorado City, Arizona, the largest polygamous enclave in the United States.

Abraham Lincoln, a white man, freed the black slaves. Maybe Barack Obama, a black man, will free the white slaves, because that's what polygamy is, white slavery.

Vote for Change! Vote for Barack Obama!

"On the first night of the Democratic Convention in Denver, Michelle Obama reintroduced to the Obama family and its values as an all-American success story to the country."

How exactly can one miss such a glaring grammatical mistake *in the damn lede*?
