10 Things You Should Know About McCain Advisor Charlie Black

By Jon Ponder, Pensito Review. Posted June 30, 2008.

Black was an early innovator of the GOP attack machine, and a very successful lobbyist and political strategist in the Reagan and Bush eras.

Charlie Black, John McCain's senior adviser, made news earlier this week when Fortune Magazine editor David Whitford reported that Black told him "with startling candor" when asked how a terrorist attack inside the United States would affect the campaign,"Certainly it would be a big advantage to [McCain]."

Keith Olbermann has been reporting on this story recently on his MSNBC news hour, in part to make that point that if a Democrat had made a similar gaffe, the Beltway punditocracy would have been in high dudgeon, demanding the adviser's head on a pike and lambasting the candidate for associating himself with such scum.

Longtime political junkies know that Charlie Black was among a handful of angry young rightwingers who remade the Republican Party after the debacle of Richard Nixon's resignation. Along with Roger Stone, Terry Dolan, Lee Atwater, Karl Rove and George Bush Jr., he is one of the inventors of today's GOP attack machine, a style of media-driven slash and burn politics that can be traced to the establishment by Black, Stone and Dolan in 1975 of a political action committee that raised millions from conservatives using deceptive direct-mail advertising and spent the money on TV ads that slimed Democrats.

Black, one of the most successful lobbyists and political strategists of the Reagan and Bush eras, has backed his share of losers over the years, too. But even when he has bet on the wrong horse, he has always landed on his feet -- which may explain why John McCain needs Charlie Black this year much more than Black needs McCain.

Here are 10 things to know about Charlie Black:

1. He's a Tarheel: Charles R. Black Jr. was born on Oct. 11, 1947, in the North Carolina seaport city of Wilmington.

2. A Goldwater Boy: He told the New York Times that he fell in love in politics when he worked on the presidential campaign of Republican Barry Goldwater as a high school student in 1964. Goldwater lost to Pres. Lyndon Johnson in a rout.

3. A Jesse Helms Man: In 1972, at age 25, Black served as political director for the first senatorial campaign of Jesse Helms, the North Carolina crypto-racist and uber-homophobe. In 1996, he told the New York Times, at the beginning of the race "everybody knew he was too conservative, he'd never run for office, and couldn't win. But it was a good conservative cause, so I went down and worked on his campaign for the last six months. And lo and behold, we did win."

4. Smear Group Founder: In 1975, with Terry Dolan and Roger Stone, Charlie Black was a founder of the National National Conservative Political Action Committee (NCPAC), which used deceptively written direct mail solicitations to bankroll television ads smearing Democrats in congressional campaigns in the Reagan era.

Roger Stone has to be one of the sleaziest Republican operatives of all time. Earlier this year, he warned Florida Gov. Charlie Crist that in order to be considered as John McCain's vice president, Crist, a 49-year-old longtime bachelor, would have to get married -- incorrectly stating that "bachelors don't get elected vice president." In fact, Franklin Pierce's vice president, William Rufus de Vane King, was a confiirmed bachelor. Known as "Aunt Fancy," King was one of the first two senators from Alabama, who shared digs in Washington for 25 years with fellow bachelor James Buchanan, Pierce's successor in the presidency.

Earlier this year, Stone launched an anti-Hillary Clinton organization he called Citizens United Not Timid, which he promoted online by using its acronym. In 1996, he had to resign from a volunteer position on the Dole presidential campaign after an ad in a swingers' magazine surfaced that featured a photo of Stone and his wife.

Black and Stone moved on from NCPAC soon after it was established, parting ways with Terry Dolan. In 1979 and 1980, NCPAC spent over the then-unheard of figure of $7 million on spurious TV ads against Democrats. Dolan once called NCPAC a "gut-cutting organization." The macho rhetoric is notable because Dolan, along with the McCarthyite Roy Cohn and Sen. "Tailgunner" Joe McCarthy himself, was a classic self-hating gay Republican homophobe. While he worked tirelessly to slime liberals and their causes by day, at night Dolan was rumored to frequent leather bars where he picked up rough trade. He died from HIV disease in 1986 at the age of 36. (Additional source: New York Times, May 31, 1981)

5. Fired By Reagan: In 1980, Charlie Black worked as field director for Ronald Reagan's second presidential campaign. After advising Reagan to ignore the Iowa caucuses -- advice that almost cost Reagan the nomination -- he was among the senior staff Reagan fired after he lost the New Hampshire primary.

Just like last time around. While Republican surrogates do the dirty work, the Republican candidate says he doesn't agree with what surrogate says. Well, this is four years later. Wesley Clark was on one of the Sunday morning talking head shows yesterday, and he dared, DARED, to say that John McSwine getting shot down doesn't qualify him to be president, or some such words. Of course he is right, but the commentator shot back, "It DOESN'T?" John Kerry was Swiftboated, so what's sauce for the goose is gravy for the gander. I, for one, do NOT "respect his (McSwine's) service." Get ready, guys--you think 2004 was bad, just wait!

Charlie Black has the potential to have enormous sway of US government policy and NOT ONE AMERICAN will cast a vote for him period. Think about that! Same goes for the deregulation king Phil Gramm.

I don’t perceive “Black” or “Rove” or “The Swiftboat Clowns for Half Truth” to be “the problem.” The problem, as it always is, is us. You and me.

Recently I’ve caught a ton of news, everything from CNN to ABC. All the major players (except FUX).

Problem we now have is that when there’s no story, the MSM just makes shit up. Any of us that were analyzing knew that following Super Tuesday Clinton’s chances of winning were between extremely low and a miracle. The MSM ginned up exciting storyline after exciting storyline and had people thinking “well, if she wins [BLANK], she’s right back in this thing.” Clinton ran a inspiring campaign, but her advisors allowed her to fall too far behind. That was all the excitement there was to that thing; it was over after Super Tuesday.

The MSM is reporting “the discord” on the “left” as Obama tracts to the center. “He’s viewed as ‘too conservative’ for the left.” They’re reporting their news by reading blogs. Have you seen those polls at AOL? If blogs are “news,” then we might as well lock ourselves in a room, watching Lou Dobbs and drool and draw pictures of what we’ll do if we ever catch an illegal immigrant. We might as well lock ourselves in this room with Lou because we’re done. There’s nothing left except self-gratification through masturbation. We have reached the epitome of stupidity.

Obama should win this thing in something approaching the worst blowout ever recorded. All the numbers are moving that direction. Texas, where I live, has moved to within the margin of error. Texas, possibly the most ridiculously conservative place since Barry Goldwater’s bathroom, is within the margin of error. And the MSM is reporting the news from the blogosphere where Obama is occasionally still a “Muslim,” or “the antichrist.”

Here at Alternet I read several of these “outraged at Obama’s position” blog posts:. “By God if Obama doesn’t support impeachment, filibuster, [fill in CAUSE here] I’m not supporting him!” If Obama gets in the first debate and wears a t-shirt that says “don’t laugh, my other outfit is a tuxedo and does nothing but quote ‘My Pet Goat,’” he’ll be better than what we’ve had for the last 8 years and anything McCain offers for the next four.

It’s time to shut-up with this nonsense. It’s time to quit believing much of what the MSM reports because it ain’t real.

There’s not a person allegedly on the left who should be doing anything but advocating for, donating to, and working with Barack Obama. Let’s save the internal “debate” until after the election; then we can have it with President Obama. But we slice and dice and splice everything thing Obama says, does, doesn’t say, or doesn’t do and when the MSM starts a fire, we throw on gasoline, or probably alcohol with the price of gas. Tell you what, after November, let’s all come back to this blog and talk about “all the things the right did that were wrong” and “if they hadn’t done all that Obama could have won.” “Coulda,” “woulda,” “shoulda.” Horse manure. This thing should be real boring, but we have to be smart enough to realize “boring” doesn’t “sell newspapers” and that, and that alone, is all that matters to MSM “news.” That's all the magic there is to "Black," "Rove," or the "Swiftys" and their ilk.

Free press pass for McCain -- i.e. Cindy's alcohol problem
Posted by: HughScott on Jun 30, 2008 8:24 AM

This article shows how mainstream media is giving McCain a pass, just like it did before we invaded Iraq, by not vetting the runup to Shock & Awe. Case at point, on June 22, the L.A. Times published the following article about Mrs. McCain and few news outlets carried the story:

Hensley & Co., one of the nation's major beer wholesalers, has brought the family of Cindy McCain wealth, prestige and influence in Phoenix, but it could also create conflicts for her husband, Sen. John McCain, if he is elected president in November.

Founded by Cindy McCain's late father, Hensely has opposed such groups as Mothers Against Drunk Driving in fighting proposed federal rules requiring alcohol content information on every package of beer, wine and liquor.

Hensley has run afoul of health advocacy groups that have tried to rein in appeals to young drinkers. For example, the company distributes caffeinated alcoholic drinks that public health groups say put young and underage consumers at risk by disguising the effects of intoxication.

Cindy McCain holds the title of company chairwoman and controls about 68% of the privately held company stock with her children and the senator's son, according to records at the Arizona Department of Liquor License and Control. Cindy and John McCain keep their finances separate, and he has no stake or role in Hensley.

In an interview in May, she said she knew "everything that is going on" and communicated with her executive team every day. She added that she did not need to be at headquarters to be in charge. So far, she has given no hint of what changes, if any, she envisions. "That's very premature," she said.

The McCain campaign issued a statement Friday about the issue, saying that "any decisions going forward will be made when John McCain wins the election and takes office, and not before." Hensley executives declined to comment.

Political analysts said they were astounded that the presumptive Republican nominee had not already addressed the issue.

A close look at Hensley shows that the company has opposed changes that critics of the beer industry say were intended to help Americans drink responsibly.

Hensley's lobbying activities have put the company at the center of a battle that has raged between the beer and liquor industries since Prohibition ended. Under federal law, liquor is taxed more heavily than beer and must contain a label that discloses alcohol content by percentage or proof. Beer and wine containers have no such disclosure requirement, though alcohol content varies widely.

Aside from the labeling issue, Hensley has begun distributing controversial products known as flavored malt beverages, which critics call "alcopops" because of their similarity to soda pop.

The beer industry, including Hensley, responded by also moving into the market with such products as Tilt, a caffeinated alcoholic drink made by Anheuser-Busch.

Critics say the product is directed mainly at youth and can leave them wide awake without knowing they are intoxicated. Other flavored malt beverages contain sweet fruit flavors that block the taste of alcohol.

"These products are starter beverages, intended to introduce consumers to alcohol and alcohol brands," said George Hacker, director of the Alcohol Policies Project at the Center for Science in the Public Interest.

KEEP DRUNK DRIVERS OFF OUR HIGHWAYS. VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA!

Wield enormous power and never receive any substantive press coverage or scrutiny even though they control the strings of GOP candidates.

Exposing the unholy and corporate-tied machinery of modern day GOP politics is a must if America is to become a more democratic and fair society.

Thank you for posting this article Alternet.
