Election 2008

Hillary Turns Up Heat, Threatens to 'Obliterate' Iran

By Robert Scheer, Truthdig. Posted April 23, 2008.

Is the campaign trail the best place to ratchet up the rhetoric against Iran? Clinton thinks so.

How proud the Clintonistas must be. They have learned how to rival what Hillary once termed the "vast right-wing conspiracy" in the effort to destroy a viable Democratic leader who dares to stand in the way of their ambitions. The tactics used to kneecap Barack Obama are the same as had been turned on Bill Clinton in earlier times, from radical-baiting associates to challenging his resolve in protecting the nation from foreign enemies. Sen. Clinton's eminently sensible and centrist -- to a fault -- opponent is now viewed as weak and even vaguely unpatriotic because he is thoughtful. Neither Karl Rove nor Dick Morris could have done a better job.

On primary election day in Pennsylvania, even with polls showing her well ahead in that state, Hillary went lower in her grab for votes. Seizing upon a question as to how she would respond to a nuclear attack by Iran, which doesn't have nuclear weapons, on Israel, which does, Hillary mocked reasoned discourse by promising to "totally obliterate them," in an apparent reference to the population of Iran. That is not a word gaffe; it is an assertion of the right of our nation to commit genocide on an unprecedented scale.

Shouldn't the potential leader of a nation that used nuclear bombs to obliterate hundreds of thousands of innocent Japanese employ extreme caution before making such a threat? Neither the Japanese then nor the Iranian people now were in a position to hold their leaders accountable, and to approve such collective punishment of innocents is to endorse terrorism. This from a candidate who attacked her opponent for suggesting targeted strikes against militants in Pakistan and derided his openness to negotiations with other national leaders as an irresponsible commitment on the part of a contender for the presidency.

Clearly the heat of a campaign is not the proper setting for consideration of a response to a threat from a nation that is a long way from developing nuclear weapons. Obviously the danger of Iran's developing such weapons can be met with a range of alternatives, from the diplomatic to the military, that do not involve genocide and at any rate must be considered in moral and not solely political terms. Or is it base political ambition that would guide Clinton if she received that middle-of-the-night phone call?

If so, it cannot be assumed that Hillary Clinton as president would be less irrationally hawkish and more restrained in the unleashing of military force than John McCain. The latter, at least, has personal experience with the true, on-the-ground costs of militarism gone wild. Yes, I know that McCain still holds out the hope of winning the Iraq war that both he and Hillary originally endorsed, but for Clinton to raise the rhetoric against Iran in the midst of a campaign is hardly the path to Mideast peace, whether it concerns Israel or Iraq. It is bizarre that a politician who bought into the phony threat about Iraq's nonexistent WMD arsenal now plays political games with the alleged threat posed by Iran.

The war has accomplished only one major change in the configuration of Mideast power: Iran now holds uncontested supremacy as the region's key player. Whatever chance there is for stability in Iraq now depends on the blessings of the ayatollahs of Iran, whose surrogates were put in power in Baghdad as a consequence of the American invasion. It is totally hypocritical for Clinton or McCain to now talk about getting tough with Iran over the nuclear weapons issue, when both contributed so mightily to squandering U.S. leverage over Tehran.

To meet that potential nuclear weapons threat from Iran requires a serious, non-rhetorical, multinational response that makes clear that no nation has the right to obliterate the population of another, and that nations, even our own, that claim that right should be challenged as unacceptably barbaric. Instead, Clinton played into the thoughts of fanatics throughout the world who believe that might makes right and who take the United States -- which spends more on its military than the rest of the world combined (including many billions on new sophisticated and "usable" nuclear weapons) -- as both their enemy and an example to emulate.

What better argument do the ayatollahs need to justify their obtaining a nuclear "deterrent" than that the possible leader of the first nation to develop nuclear weapons, and the only one to ever use them to kill people, now threatens the people of Iran with obliteration?

Digg!

Bluffing or Not

Obviously this was bluster and a total bluff. Our allies know it and every leader in the rest of the world knows it.

But guess who doesn't know it.

Why... that would be all those bitter unemployed people. You know, those people who KNOW in their hearts that a flagpin means more than real patriotism.

It's all those bitter undereducated people who are the 'heart' of America. You know, those who consistently vote Republican, or who send their kids off to war.

It's people who love their Bible more than their mothers, and who think that making sure Israel stays safe and sound - and it's those very same people who have never heard of AIPAC or know that Israel does more spying in the US than ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.

Gosh. Isn't it grand living in America? It's a land of fresh air, highly educated people, and a green growing economy.

Oh, I guess I was thinking of either Denmark or any of those SOCIALIST Scandinavian countries.

Hillary, just shut up.

from someone who says they are ready to be commander-in-chief? This woman is as dangerous as McCain in the area of military or political action in the Mideast. Her veiled threat shows that she would vote to invade Iran if Bush said he needed to do so, as she has already done indirectly. Her lack of fitness to lead is clear in that this kind of threat not only inflames radical Islamists, but also offends our Arab allies, the Russians and Chinese who are trading partners and allies of Iran, and the North Koreans who support Iran's anti-American stance. Look closely, Hillary, these are all nuclear powers - Russia, China, North Korea. And do not forget Islamic Pakistan! She in essence has said she will risk WWIII for Israel, and the devil take American lives, national safety and security, and world peace if she was faced with such a military situation!

When I heard her on Olbermann make these comments, I looked at my husband and said do you just hear what I think I heard? Did she just imply that she would destroy Iran and risk starting WWIII for Israel? He looked at me, and just whispered Yes! When Olbermann later followed up with another commentator it was along the same lines as my question to my husband and the response was the same. This is the only article I have seen on this since, which absolutely amazes me. I grew up in the Northeast, and I can assure you that the people of Pennsylvania do NOT want a person in the White House who would risk all our lives for Israel or oil! But all they got, unless they watched Olbermann, was Hillary's fear ad, not her truly terrifying comments! I am so sick of her Rovian campaign that implies that Americans are cowardly children who need to run to Mommy when the Boogey man comes as a way to get votes. Americans are not cowards - and it is time for us to stop buying into these ads and stand up and tell the likes of Hillary Clinton, John McCain, and the Republicans that we will no longer be frightened or intimidated into voting for people who live to fight wars for personal financial gain or power! It is time to say we are FREE AMERICANS and we respect other nations and their rights as human beings whose opinions are different from our own, since it is a principle on which this country was founded. We the People need to stand up to the Hillary Clinton's of this nation and say we are not cowards who need our Mommy - we are strong, courageous, honorable Americans who do not need someone to take the HEAT for us, we can do it for ourselves without committing genocide or creating WWIII!

It is time, America, to take back our dignity and our honor by embracing both our strengths (courage, honor, honesty, respect for others) and our weaknesses (unreasonable pride, apathy, racial divides, economic divides). It is time, America, to take back our country from those who would try to keep us afraid and bitter and angry! It is time, America, to stop the madness of the likes of Bush, Cheney, McCain, and Clinton that will lead to our destruction as a nation! It is time, America, to recognize that all we have left thanks to politicians like the Bushes and the Clintons is hope - hope for change, hope for a better future for our children, hope for peace, hope that we will even have a future! Clinton's comments put all that hope in jeopardy - and Bush will play into that when the time comes before January 2009 if she does not get her nomination! COUNT ON IT!

That she has more "balls" than any man running? That she can "out-testosterone" McStain and Bush combined? She sounds as insane as Joe Lieberman now! Perhaps that's who she was thinking of... as a running mate? My God... she's gone off the edge. She shouldn't have her finger on the button any more than Bush or McStain should. She's just as dangerous. Just as crazy.

Yeah... some president she'd make, all right!

I'm trying to imagine Dr. King saying something like this - you know - "obliterate" an entire nation. Incinerate them. Murder them. Gosh, Barack just said that people in mill towns here in PA were "bitter" about being left out of the prosperity for the last two decades. Our gal takes this to a whole new level. So far she's got the Guns and God stuff down -- can the Gays be far behind? Oh, sorry, they were already in her "framing" when she talked about San Fran Sis Cooooooo....wink wink.

You can the Girl out of the Young Republicans but maybe you really can't take the Young Republicans out of the Girl.

This is or should be primarily about Israel!

Clinton's declaration of unquestioned support for Israel is what should be discussed here. She and the rest of the presidential candidates have all vowed to support and defend Israel at all costs. It's a tiresome and repetitive ritual which has been ongoing for many years. It is also, all the proof that anyone needs to realize the stranglehold the jewish lobbies have on our electoral process. We have far too many jews like Joe Lieberman, whose every move is calculated to benefit Israel at the expense of the United States. Clinton is just the latest pawn in the game controlled by the jewish lobbies. Obama is also smart enough to realize that he's going nowhere without the endorsement of the jewish lobbies. McPain's war hawk stance is a perfect fit for Israel's interests in the Middle East.
Its time we learn to read between the lines to see who is really running this country. Why can a prominent jew like Martin Indyk boast that he can guarantee the vote of 81 of our 100 Senators? Shouldn't that cause any thinking person to question the role of organized jewry in our government? Are we constituted as a nation to serve the interests of a foreign nation?
Why did the Prime Minister of Israel angrily boast "don't worry, we control them" when he responded to someone's fears that a certain activity would anger the Americans?
Why, despite the ongoing spying by Israeli agents, do we continue to donate billions of our tax dollars to Israel each and every year? Why does NOT ONE Senator or Representative dare to vote against this annual gift to Israel? Why are all of our government officials and representatives deathly afraid of offending AIPAC and the rest of the many jewish lobbies?

Wake up America! Not all jews are sinister but there's definitely a cadre of American jews who put Israel first and we must detect them and kick them out of our government offices.

where was the storm of protest? he didn't even pick a target.

now, clinton says she'd obliterate iran (instead of addressing the ignorance of the question and behaving likes a statesman), and everyone is foaming at the mouth.

so, why did obama get a free pass when he said he'd use nuclear weapons?

because no one could say a man would throw china around the white house?

before anyone starts attacking me for supporting clinton--i don't. i think everyone of the candidates was bought and paid for long before the campaign started.

Choice May Be Insane vs. More Insane

I have vacillated mightily in this election cycle, not in my support of Obama. I’m Obama red, white and blue.

What I’ve gone back-and-forth on is whether to vote McCain if the Clintons were to once again slime and mis-speak their way into the nomination. I had really two arguments against McCain. I want out of Iraq. In Vietnam we declared victory and came home; in Iraq we’re about a trillion dollars, 4,000 American troops and hundreds of thousand of Iraqi lives past that point. So, I thought even Hillary, who is probably more pro-war than any “democrat” I’ve ever seriously looked at, and even though I find someone who will lie about sniper fire to be a tad untrustworthy, would be better at accomplishing this goal than McCain who seems to think we can continue this fiasco in perpetuity. I personally believe he’s trying to make amends for Vietnam, but I also believe we’re in Iraq because the chief Chicken Little in charge thinks “he tried to kill my daddy.” So, please take my beliefs with a block of salt.

The second reason I would consider Clinton over McCain is that I believe (see preceding comment) McCain is fairly close to insanity. Personal opinion but the man seems at times to either need to be more heavily medicated or have his medication reduced or stopped.

And now Hillary says, as she panders to the furthest right lunatic fringe, that if Iran bombs Israel with the Bush Administration’s fantasy arsenal of WMDs, we’ll annihilate an entire country. Even if her meaning was "we’ll consider obliterating an entire country" shouldn’t we have a headline some place in a major news outlet screaming “HAVE YOU LOST YOUR FUCKING MIND!”

My response, after picking myself up off the floor, was to immediately go to barackobama.com and make a large contribution (it's more definite than prayer).

But we have nothing. If Obama had made this statement, he’d be done because there’d be no way any of his other message could be heard: “I believe in health care for all who want it, getting out of a war we should never have gotten into and obliterating Iran.” But what was Hillary to say? She's pandered herself into some mighty corners--her "strength" in the face of all things evil perhaps being the tightest spot. “I think we should talk with Iran to insure we have diplomatic relations and try and work with them to defuse the tensions in the Middle East through discourse?” or perhaps “As a semi-viable, at least in my own mind, presidential candidate I don’t think it’s a good practice to tell any country what we will or won’t do in a specific circumstance. I can tell you that should any country attack another sovereign nation (except the U.S. invading others as is our Christian right), the United States would take a very dim view and respond accordingly.”

She can't do the first because Obama then could say "hey, wait a minute, you yelled at me when I suggested we should talk with our adversaries." She can't do the second because then, of course, she'd be a pussy.

So now I have to decide, should Obama somehow drive this train into a ditch, or rather the media and this really amazingly asleep populous drive this thing into the ditch, whether to support the one needing additional (or less) medication, or support the one so far moved from reality as to consider a nuclear response somehow reasonable, even in the context of this make believe scenario. I’m hoping she misspoke again. If not, oh shit.

I hope she was simply exhausted from the campaign. A threat to obliterate an entire nation takes us back to Hitler. If she rally believes this then she would be more dangerous in the White House than either Reagon or Bush. Unfortunately I have notheard her take this back yet. BTW yes I am a Democrat, Jewish, and strongly support Israel and think that the regime in Iran is a clear threat to peace in the region

Really, Hillary? Would you use bombs to strike at Iran? Do you really want to sleep at night, knowing that, at "3 a.m." your daughter was killed by an errant Air Force bomb, or knowing the air strikes you authorized will obliterate children?
If you want to employ smear tactics, those you have railed about by the Republicans, to get elected, then you have no chance, no matter what happens up to November.
Is this the real you, a wolf in sheep's clothing? You already voted to go to war, so why try to change your mind now? IS the carnage too gory for you?
Or has Obama gotten under your skin? You are not like the rest of us who live in small-town America, because if you were, millionaires do not live in a place like Nanty-Glo, Pennsylvania.
You must learn a lesson about being something you are; but you're trying to be something you're not: a hawk disguised as a dove. Think things through before you speak.

Hillary Clinton did not "threaten" to obliterate Iran. That's a flat-out lie.

Senator Clinton stated, quite accurately, that the US has the capability to obliterate Iran. This was said in the context of an unprovoked nuclear attack by Iran on Israel or any other nation in the Middle East. It is part of her rationale for why an "umbrella of deterrence" would be effective within a regional security structure similar to NATO.

But she also said she intends to use diplomacy to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons in the first place.

All three are now in the retail business, demanded by our silly system of nominating Presidential candidates. Whatever their bluster, perceived weakness, friends or enemies etc, today is all and only about getting nominated. As usual, in my opinion, the Democratic policy wonks are falling smack into the Republican trap: talk about issues and personalities!

For me, there is only one issue: Throw the Republican thugs and fascists out of office. I'll settle for that if that's all I could get. These guys have been busy at wreaking the Constitution and they are doing too good a job.

I want a "change": protect the Federal Judiciary from any more reactionmary appointments; appoint an Attorney-General who will do his/her job professionally, and get rid of the lap dogs now there. I expect that with a Democratic victory.

Get us the hell out of Iraq!

All other issues will be left to the body politic as it will then exist, including a new Congress, and those issues raised in this thread will be dealt with one way or another.

I can assure of one thing: all of us will have our own priority of what is important, including tax reform (whatever that is), environment, economy, immigration, war on drugs (does that still exist?), reform our medical delivery and payment systems, etc.

In my opinion, none of the foregoing will be changed by much if at all if we are still at war.

I have my own opinions about the two Dems running. It makes no difference to me which is elected as long as one of them is so that the matters I first raised will be dealt with almost ipso facto.

Common Knowledge Secret that Olmert blurted out before.
Posted by: riotoustanpdx on Apr 24, 2008 9:29 PM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Some months ago Olmert of Israel used the same rhetoric in an "offhand remark" that referred to Israel having 400 nukes "that everyone knows about but no one talks about," as they say in Israel.

The "common knowledge" that is periodically put out there to warn the radicals in Iran is not limited to nuclear threats against Tehran, Iran, but for Damascus as well.

The real concern is that the uncountable number of tons of arms that "disappeared" from Iraq over the last five years have been moved to the three points closest to Israel; to Gaza, Syria, and Lebanon. References to "Israelis being in for a big surprise" if war erupts from these three, excluding Iran, have been repeated from all sides opposing Israel.

This is the great concern, and suspicion is that these are the facts behind the warnings.

Any day now, as Israel's 60th anniversary approaches at May 15th, nerves are sharpening all around with expectation that a slight spark can and will ignite a major war.

My wife and seven-year-old son are in Israel. Like many who live there, they shelter themselves from the reality of imminent war by refusing to learn what happens outside the scope of their daily lives. It seems that most of the population of Israel relies on the false sense of security that these open threats provide.

The war will come, and it will may make Iraq look like a football game in comparison.

OK, let me get this straight. Obama is "naive" and "inexperienced" because he wants to talk to governments the US now opposes. HRC, on the other hand, is "experienced", "tough" and "ready to lead" because she threatens to "obliterate" an entire people for an attack their government is incapable of launching and has not threatened to launch, with weapons that government does not have. A government that assisted the US in the aftermath of 9/11 and offered to negotiate on all differences in 2003. A government closely allied with our hand-picked regime in Iraq.

HRC's comments are boilerplate Clintonism: rank, craven posturing, not to mention diplomatic stupidity. Ahmedinejahd himself has scarcely said anything stupider in his tenure. Far more vexing, however, is the abject gullibility of the millions of rank and file Democrats who actually still support her. Who think there is some kind of wisdom and logic and "political savvy" in her deranged remarks. What is wrong with these people?

"April 24, 2008 (LPAC)--Lyndon LaRouche denounced the media liars who are trying to stoke Dick Cheney's war drive against Iran by using Sen. Hillary Clinton's remarks on Iran, in her interview with ABC's Good Morning America on April 22. After that interview, hundreds of press stories announced--falsely--that Clinton had ``threatened'' to ``totally obliterate'' Iran.
`"`Anyone in the press who is playing Clinton's statement up as a threat is either ignorant or a liar, because her answer describes what has been standing U.S. presidential policy, for both Democrats and Republicans since the mid-1990s,'' LaRouche said. ``The policy was adopted when Pakistan developed nuclear weapons because the United States does not want Israel retaliating with its own nuclear strike. Such a move by Israel, long ago was war-gamed as the `breakaway ally' scenario that would immediately lead to global war.''
Let's set the record straight. First of all, Clinton was answering a question as to ``what if Iran attacked Israel with nuclear weapons.'' Most of the most hysterical press coverage didn't even say that Clinton was responding to a question on the ``unthinkable'' worst case scenario--a nuclear strike on Israel.
The answer Clinton gave was, ``In the next 10 years, during which they might foolishly consider launching an attack on Israel, we would be able to totally obliterate them. That's a terrible thing to say but those people who run Iran need to understand that, because that perhaps will deter them from doing something that would be reckless, foolish and tragic.''
"According to a Washington-based high level intelligence source, Clinton's statement filled a vacuum by simply articulating what has been the standing U.S. policy on protecting Israel since Pakistan developed nuclear weapons. "

Seems like it's catching on: Wiping Out, Erasing, Drawing, and Rearranging the Map to suit a particular Taste and Interest or another. Who are these post-modern Cartographers all? Just how are all these formal, conceptual and abstract lines cutting into and through human beings, yet again?

Obliterate: to blot out, leaving no traces; to efface. To do away with, as if by effacing; destroy. Ob: to blot out + littera: a letter.

This makes for 4 Letters: I R A N. Then a whole lot of Iranians.

No use to counter-pose Ahmadinezad's locutions, ambiguously translated as referring to either Zionism or the State of Israel (translations are tricky and interpretations useful to particular interests. This "promise" by Clinton expands, it does not contract or counter, IDEAS of this sort. It's "anything you can do, I can do better". What it DOES contract is another conception: Civilizations.

There's already a whole lot of ob-literation and blotting out and effacing going on, as has been in the past. Except it's not letters. Check: I R A Q (again, after the first pass by Great Britain). The letters have stood; not so vast numbers of Iraqis.

But a whole lot of jobs for Map-makers and a constant production of Atlases. Ah, that Invisible Hand of the Market! Even the most despicable self-interests of the Entrepreneur bring the blessings of Growth and the General Good. Paraphrasing a long ago GM manager, "what's good for Halliburton, Blackwater, Burger King, McDonald's, McDonald-Douglas, Northrup, GE, Starbucks, etc. etc., is good for America". But only for FUTURE subservient, obedient, acceptable and well-behaved Iraqis. Present ones and previous ones? Not so much. Blessed be the Map-Makers!

For those who haven't figured it out yet, Hillary is not Bill. And if she becomes president, she won't be handing her power to Bill. He new not to use nukes. He obviously wasn't afraid to use weapons to make a point (right or wrong), but he never threatened to obliterate a sovereign nation. Why are two of the 3 final candidates for our highest office so intent on war? They should look at helping our citizens at home and then the people who truely need help around the globe.
