Election 2008

Does Obama Really Have a Race Problem?

By Peter Dreier, The American Prospect. Posted April 3, 2008.

Contrary to class stereotypes, wealthy whites are more likely than working-class whites to use the race card in the voting booth.

One of the persistent mantras of this election season is that Barack Obama's skin color may cost him the Democratic nomination (or the White House), because of racism among working-class white voters. According to conventional wisdom, white workers faced with growing economic insecurity -- blue-collar employees in manufacturing and construction, pink-collar employees in office and retail sectors -- vent their frustrations on blacks, whom they view as competing for their jobs or living off of government social programs funded by whites' hard-earned tax dollars. When those white workers get to the voting booth, their anger translates into an unwillingness to vote for black candidates.

Obama confronted this paradox in his speech in Philadelphia on Tuesday. "Just as black anger often proved counterproductive, so have these white resentments distracted attention from the real culprits of the middle class squeeze -- a corporate culture rife with inside dealing, questionable accounting practices, and short-term greed; a Washington dominated by lobbyists and special interests; economic policies that favor the few over the many," Obama observed. "And yet, to wish away the resentments of white Americans, to label them as misguided or even racist, without recognizing they are grounded in legitimate concerns -- this too widens the racial divide, and blocks the path to understanding."

There is no doubt that some working-class whites harbor such resentments against blacks, just as it true that whites and blacks hold similar sentiments about Latino immigrants, and that many Hispanics have negative stereotypes about blacks. Among low-income and working-class Americans of all colors, such cross-cutting prejudices are well documented. It isn't surprising that these attitudes are reflected in voting behavior.

But let's be clear about the class nature of racial prejudice, stereotypes, discrimination, and disparities. Wealthy whites are more likely than working-class whites to use the race card in the voting booth. Voting statistics reveal that most upper-income whites consistently vote in Republican, not Democratic, primaries, which means they don't have to vote for black or Latino candidates. And in partisan run-off elections, wealthy whites overwhelmingly vote for Republican over Democratic contenders. In the 2004 presidential contest, eight of the 10 wealthiest congressional districts voted for Bush. The two districts that went to Kerry were both in California's high-tech-oriented Silicon Valley. White voters earning incomes of more than $200,000 a year cast 66 percent of their ballots for Bush. (The Kerry voters among them tended to be professionals in human services, government, teaching, and creative sectors, not those in business and management.)

In contrast, among white voters with family incomes between $15,000 and $30,000, 51 percent voted for Bush, and among white voters in the $30,000 to $50,000 range, 58 percent went with Bush.

If Barack Obama winds up facing John McCain in November, Obama will certainly attract some upper-class white voters -- including some among the 1 percent of Americans with incomes over $364,657, who have 22 percent of all income and own 37 percent of all corporate stock. Because their numbers are so small, they won't make a big difference in the outcome of the election, except in terms of where they send their campaign contributions.

It is all but certain, though, that in an Obama-McCain face-off fewer wealthy whites will vote for Obama than working-class whites whom affluent pundits are so quick to label as racist. Indeed, we've already seen a significant number of blue-collar white voters show their support for Obama in Iowa, South Carolina, Wisconsin, and other states. Yes, white working-class Democrats in economically troubled Ohio favored Clinton over Obama. But in November, most of the blue-collar Democrats, working-class independents, and union members who voted for Clinton -- in Ohio and elsewhere -- are likely to switch to Obama, not McCain.

It is understandable that most wealthy whites would consistently vote for Republicans, who like low taxes and hate strong unions. But in recent decades, a significant number of working-class whites -- the so-called "Reagan Democrats" -- have voted for GOP candidates who have done so little to address their bread-and-butter concerns. As Thomas Frank argued in his book, What's the Matter with Kansas?, the Republicans have successfully used "wedge" issues -- abortion, religion, gun control, gay rights, affirmative action, and, of course, the war on terrorism -- to persuade some working-class whites to vote against their economic interests.

But the tide seems to be changing. Certainly exasperation with the war in Iraq has played a role in bringing many working-class white voters back into the Democratic fold. But the major issues in this election -- stagnant wages, job insecurity, rising health-care and college costs, home foreclosures -- favor the Democrats. Some voters may be blinded by racial prejudice, but in November, pink slips and green dollars are likely to play a more important role than black or white skin.

Of course, class and income aren't the only factors that determine white voting behavior. Age plays a role, too. So far, Obama has inspired a significant increase in turnout among young white voters, but he hasn't fared as well among middle-aged and elderly whites. Unfortunately for the Democrats, young voters are fleeing the older Rust Belt areas like Ohio and Pennsylvania, both key battleground states.

YOU MIGHT BE AN IDIOT:-)

If you think Barack Obama with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) led the greatest economic expansion, and prosperity in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Hillary Clinton. Who anticipated this current health care crisis back in 1993, and fought a pitched battle against overwhelming odds to get universal health care for all the American people.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience can manage, and get us out of two wars better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) went to war only when he was convinced that he absolutely had to. Then completed the mission in record time against a nuclear power. AND DID NOT LOSE THE LIFE OF A SINGLE AMERICAN SOLDIER. NOT ONE!

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with little or no education experience is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) made higher education affordable for every American. And created higher job demand and starting salary's than they had ever been before or since.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that Obama with no experience will be better than Hillary Clinton who spent 8 years at the right hand of President Bill Clinton. Who is already on record as one of the greatest Presidents in American history.

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Obama, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Hillary and Bill Clinton..

You Might Be An Idiot!

If you think all those Republicans voting for Obama in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think he is a stronger Democratic candidate than Hillary Clinton. :-)

Best regards

DON'T BE DUPED !!!

Large numbers of Republicans have been voting for Barack Obama in the DEMOCRATIC primaries, and caucuses from early on. Because they feel he would be a weaker opponent against John McCain. And because they feel that a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket would be unbeatable. And also because with a Clinton and Obama ticket you are almost 100% certain to get quality, affordable universal health care very soon.

But first, all of you have to make certain that Hillary Clinton takes the democratic nomination and then the Whitehouse. NOW! is the time. THIS! is the moment you have all been working, and waiting for. You can do this America. “Carpe diem” (harvest the day).

I think Hillary Clinton see’s a beautiful world of plenty for all. She is a woman, and a mother. And it’s time America. Do this for your-self, and your children’s future. You will have to work together on this and be aggressive, relentless, and creative. Americans face an even worse catastrophe ahead than the one you are living through now.

Hillary Clinton has actually won by much larger margins than the vote totals showed. And lost by much smaller vote margins than the vote totals showed. Her delegate count is actually much higher than it shows. And higher than Obama’s. She also leads in the electoral college numbers that you must win to become President in the November national election. HILLARY CLINTON IS ALREADY THE TRUE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE!

As much as 30% of Obama's primary, and caucus votes are Republicans trying to choose the weakest democratic candidate for McCain to run against. These Republicans have been gaming the caucuses where it is easier to vote cheat. This is why Obama has not been able to win the BIG! states primaries. Even with Republican vote cheating help.

Hillary Clinton has been out manned, out gunned, and out spent 4 and 5 to 1. Yet Obama has only been able to manage a very tenuous, and questionable tie with Hillary Clinton.

If Obama is the democratic nominee for the national election in November he will be slaughtered. Because the Republican vote cheating help will suddenly evaporate. All of this vote fraud and republican manipulation has made Obama falsely look like a much stronger candidate than he really is. YOUNG PEOPLE. DON’T BE DUPED! Think about it. You have the most to lose.

The democratic party needs to fix this outrage. I suggest a Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama ticket. Everyone needs to throw all your support to Hillary Clinton NOW! So you can end this outrage against YOU the voter, and against democracy.

I think Barack Obama has a once in a life time chance to make the ultimate historic gesture for unity, and change in America by accepting Hillary Clinton’s offer as running mate. Such an act now would for ever seal Barack Obama’s place at the top of the list of Americas all time great leaders, and unifiers for all of history.

The democratic party, and the super-delegates have a decision to make. Are the democrats, and the democratic party going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee to fight for the American people. Or are the republicans going to choose the DEMOCRATIC party nominee through vote fraud, and gaming the DEMOCRATIC party primaries, and caucuses.

Fortunately the Clinton’s have been able to hold on against this fraudulent outrage with those repeated dramatic comebacks of Hillary Clinton’s. Only the Clinton’s are that resourceful, and strong. Hillary Clinton is your NOMINEE. They are the best I have ever seen.

Sincerely

jacksmith...

OBAMA NOT WRIGHT FOR U.S.

NON-BLACK VOTERS ARE SICK OF EVERY BLACK POLITICAN/SO-CALLED PREACHERS DEFENDING THE RACIST OBAMA AND WRIGHT. THE MEDIA CAN TOUT ALL THE BOGUS LIES THEY WANT...ITS VOTERS WHO MAKE THE DECISION AND WE ARE MORE EDUCATED THAN YOU GIVE CREDIT! OBAMA IS NOT WRIGHT TO LEAD OUR COUNTRY AND WE WILL NOT VOTE FOR HIM!!!! Mainstream media needs to stop pushing Obama down voters throats and stop the stupid Clinton bashing. Wheres a tur journalist? Democrats NEED Clinton to stay in the race. OBAMA IS UNELECTABLE IN GENERAL ELECTION. Obamas campaign pastor is not going away anytime soon Rev Wright says you don't have to wait for the afterlife for the mansion on the hilltop, he’s right! To shut him up Trinity United Church of Christ is building Rev. Wright a $1 mil house on a lot that was purchased for $345,000. According to his federal income tax return Obama gave the Trinity United church $22,500 in contributions. CBS Chicago has strangely not released video they have of Obama at Trinity United Church of Christ Service with Pastor Wright. According to a Chicago Tribune article, at the Service Obama spoke to the cheering congregation and the choir sang, “Hallelujah Barack”. After the service Wright and Obama sat together, laughing , talking and signing books. if ANY other candidate had this controversy swirling the footage would have found it’s way to the national and cable news networks by now! Obama who marched with Farrakhan Also Wright is OPRAHS Pastor; Slurs Italians in Latest Magazine (CNSNews.com) Wright continues his Obama supported attacks on non-blacks now slurring Italians in issue of Trumpet Newsmag. Wright states, Jesus enemies had their opinion, Italians looked down their garlic noses at the Galileans, and Jesus death on a cross was a public lynching Italian style! This government runs everything from the White House to the schoolhouse, from the Capitol to the KKKlan of white supremacy who is clearly in charge. Every issue published Wright's rant against white people in which he covers a world that is controlled by white supremacy, a country that’s on its way to h*ll in a hand basket because of lying politicians, in a culture that still thinks 'white is right! He said young African-American Christians are more concerned about 'bling bling' than about freeing their minds and still Obama says I could no more disown him than I could disown the black community. Trumpet Newsmagazine started 80s, Wright is CEO and Wright's daughter, Jeri Wright, is the publisher. Requests for comments Obama camp of course not answered. Trumpet Nov/Dec edition, featured Louis Farrakhan, recipient of the Lifetime Achievement "Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter" award. Farrakhan has called Judaism a "gutter religion" and said Jews are "bloodsuckers. Many of the biased cable news pundits try to make viewers believe Obama's speech limited damage of Wright controversy, but the general election will show voters strongly disagree, especially non-black voters. Obama refuses to explain to the public why he would have someone as such a close spiritual advisor and mentor and why he would expose two young daughters to such hatefulness against fellow Americans. The problem Wright's comments are not theological views, but political statements. This is a serious issue for Obama in general election. As with each new utterance on the topic of Reverend Wright, Barack Obama confirms his own moral obliviousness and he seems to have disdain for those who are troubled by his own unwillingness to break with Wright, even worse Obama still insists Wright is a brilliant man, So brilliant, apparently, that he has uncovered the plot by white America to kill African Americans, so insightful to perceive the 9/11 attacks caused by American terrorism and his discerning observation Israel is a “dirty” word,in Obama’s eyes, Wright is brilliant. pundits like CNN Obamaphiles SAYS, not affect voters view of Obama’s judgment.

It's unfortunate that Senator Obama is using false advertising to explain why he can be trusted to do something about energy prices. In his ad, Obama says, I'm Barack Obama, and I don't take money from oil companies or lobbyists, and I won't let them block change any more. Obama has been the recipient of more than $220,000 from the oil and gas industry just since as of Feb/08. Two of Obama's campaign bundlers are also CEOs for oil and gas companies, per his campaign Web site? Obama needs to answer to VOTERS about his dealings with one of his largest contributors Exelon, a big nuclear power company that he cut deals behind closed doors protecting them from full disclosure in the nuclear industry. Exxon, Shell, and others are among his biggest donors

Obama said he goofed on votes angered fellow Democrats in the Senate when he voted to strip millions of dollars from a child welfare office on Chicago's West Side. But Obama had a ready explanation: He goofed! Also announced he had fumbled an election-reform vote the day before, on a measure that passed 51 to 6. The next day, he acknowledged voting "present" on a key telecommunications vote. He stood on March 11, 1999, to take back his vote against legislation to end good-behavior credits for certain felons in county jails. "I pressed the wrong button on that," he said. Obama was the lone dissenter on Feb. 24, 2000, against 57 yeas for a ban on human cloning. "I pressed the wrong button by accident," he said. But two of Obama's bumbles came on more-sensitive topics, he backed legislation to permit riverboat casinos to operate even when the boats were dockside. The measure, pushed by the gambling industry and fought by church groups whose support Obama was seeking, passed with two "yeas" to spare -- including Obama's. Moments after its passage he rose to say, explaining that he had mistakenly voted for it.

Peter Dreier makes many good points in this piece, but misses totally on his main point. If two things occur simultaneously, it is an unjustifed leap to assign them a cause and effect. yes, it is true that "rich whites" vote Republican and would vote against Obama . but NOT because he is black. Peter, rich whites generally vote against Democrats regardless of their color. that's because their primary motivator is NOT race, as you contend, but economics. Republican policies favor the rich; always have. the needs of the Republicans is to conserve their wealth. Democrat values favor health care, education, and social equality, and those are the values of middle and lower class voters. so "rich whites" (and bigots) generally vote Republican and egalitarians and working people with high needs for health care and education vote Democrat.
bottom line: when you define them as "rich, white" Republicans, you ought to know that they are "rich" first, and "white" second. for better or for worse, economics trumps everything (exceept for rich Democrats, who vote their values instead of their wallets).

The Real Issue

People in this country are concerned about race, but economics is the major issue. There is a class war going on and the very rich people at the top have all the power. When times get tough for people economically they focus on blaming someone. It's easier to blame that person who was perceived as receiving preferential treatment, than to blame the system which is controlled by the corporations and the very rich.

At 74, after a lifetime of being a democrat living in this "democratic republic", 20 year-navy veteran of Korea, Vietnam, and on-site thruout first 'Gulf War, I ALWAYS knew ours was a sick system that abused workers and the general public, including the youth, women and all 'minorities' but was also unlearned of the full scope of the criminality under every US regime until I finally gave up on The Party, retired and had time to look a bit deeper.
It doesnt take much, just the initiative to LOOK without political/ideological bias into this countys' actual history-of our "our" government(s) both here at home and around the world.
Just for starters, "WE" have ALWAYS supported the worst of the vile dictators, disposed the most populous leaders, and opposed the working class, women and 'other minorities'...ALWAYS supported the wealthy elites.

Today, April 3, the Los Angeles Times published a lengthy article about Hillary titled, "Clinton on the sidelines in effort to end the war."

The subtitle said, "Despite her vocal criticism, records show she has done little to force a withdrawal of troops from Iraq."

So how do we know when Hillary is being truthful? Simple answer. When her mouth is shut.

Personally, I'm damned tired of being called names such as tratior, unAmerican, or idiot, by right-wingers who have gotten everything wrong and think that smearing people with lies is good politics. (Obama WAS a professor, and that's according to the University of Chicago where he taught! See Huffington article, for instance http://tinyurl.com/yps9p7 )

I'm also tired of elitists like the Clinton who think they can kill 1/2 million innocent people in Iraq with sanctions and illegal 'no fly zones' and that no one will notice. I'm tires of the sleaze. I'm tired of the'triangulation' that advances the fascist agenda while pretending to be for the people. I'm tired of the lies and the nastiness, and the delusional speeches of the Republicans AND the DLC and Clinton. I'm tired of politicians who try to split people apart with fear, hate, racism, and classism.

I'm ready for a candidate who tries to bring people together and solve the real problems -- and that's not Clinton, but for all the concerns I have about him, it looks like it is Obama. Obama is the best chance we have of moving forward right now -- not a candidate whose crowd runs around calling people names.

If you think Hillary Clinton with little or no experience would be better than Hillary Clinton with 35 years experience.

You are definitely An Idiot!

If you think that Clinton with no experience can fix an economy on the verge of collapse better than Barack Obama when Billary sent more jobs overseas with NAFTA and locked up more nonwhites forever with the three strikes law that has our prison population still growing with already 25% of the world prisoners.

You are definitely An Idiot!

If you think that Clinton with no experience fighting for universal health care can get it for you better than Barack Obama when Clinton has already tried and failed at healthcare reform.

You are definitely An Idiot!

If you think that Clinton with no experience can manage and get us out of two wars better than Obama when Billary bombed the hell out of Iraq for his entire term in office killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqi women and children who died from diseases, starvation and lack of medical supplies just to punish Saddam, a tin-pot dictator.

You are definitely An Idiot!

If you think that Clinton with no experience saving the environment is better than Hillary Clinton. Whose ;-) husband (Bill Clinton) left office with the greatest amount of environmental cleanup, and protections in American history.

You are definitely An Idiot!

If you think that Clinton with little or no education experience is better than Obama when Hillary's experience amounts to being a Washington insider corporate sellout who happened to be married to a president and engaged in the Whitewater fiasco while lying about her trip to Bosnia.

You are definitely An Idiot!

If you think that Clinton with no experience will be better than Obama who spent his life helping poor people and who is already on record as one of the greatest speech makers in American History.

You are definitely An Idiot!

If you think that you can change the way Washington works with pretty speeches from Clinton, rather than with the experience, and political expertise of two master politicians ON YOUR SIDE like Michelle and Barack Obama.

You are definitely An Idiot!

If you think all those Republicans voting for Clinton in the Democratic primaries, and caucuses are doing so because they think she is a stronger Democratic candidate than Barack Obama. :-)

Best regards
JACKASS!!!!!

I do not believe wealthy people are any more racist than poor people, and are probably less. Rich people do not want anyone taking theirs and will do any thing to prevent that from happening and that is not racism, it is business. On the lower end when one believes someone is not taking money from their pocket but food from their mouth, it is a lot easier to slip into racism simply because there is a lack of other choices. When the Reverend Wright story broke in the media Clinton had a 20-point lead in Pennsylvania. I immediately made the bet that Clinton would lose or win by less than five points, and I really got great odds at that time. I believed that many white voters would take a good look at themselves to decide if they were voting for someone or against someone. In order to do that they would really have to look at Obama, something they may not have bothered to do. Now they put them selves in a position to make an informed choice. I bet that they would act just like people all over the country have been acting. The more the media mouths and Clinton supporters push the Wright story because they are patriots the more racist they look. Did you ever here the one about the black preacher who said aids was a government plot and the white preacher who said aids was a curse from God …

Low income uneducated whites vote for her. She told Richardson "Obama Can Not Win". That is not a reason to vote for her. With this logic, no black will ever have a chance. If any nation can be this open, it is the US. I hope we break the race barrier this time.

Arguements over NON-ISSUES. Turdblossom must be ecstatic. Religion and politics: Even though they're first cousins, religion should NEVER be considered when evaluating a candidate for political office (Article two of the Constitution). How about experience? Georgiepoo was a Chief Executive of Texas for two terms, and this "experience" was touted as something valuable and germaine to him running for President. Never mind the sorry mess that he left for someone else to clean up, and that this was, and is still his way of doing things, or that his main cultural contribution to our nation is fart jokes and calling his closest associates vulgar and demeaning names. Boy, am I glad dumbya is so experienced! Then, there are the REAL issues confronting us. Let's face it folks, they're doozies, and practically ALL caused by the gems now in power, from the "decider" on down. If anything positive can be said about rove & co. it's that they're spectacularly successful at misdirection and stirring up emotional (as opposed to rational and logical) responses.

Think about it.

We're giving the election to McCain wasting time on Barack. This country is already a mess. We don't need to "make a statement" right now.

I hope Alternet readers are aware that there are plenty of political operatives posing as "ordinary" posters on here and on HuffPost. The spread of viral disinformation online is a recent technique being used in clever ways, especially by GOP-associated groups. Many pose as Democratic voters favoring Clinton, because the GOP is not worried about running against her, whereas Obama, while unproven, MIGHT be harder to smear (deals with it better, is a better public speaker than Clinton) and definitely has lower unfavorable associations for most voters.

As for me, I trust neither one of them, but will definitely vote against McCain, only because the GOP has to be punished somehow. As a purely selfish and shallow consideration, I would sure rather listen to Obama for four or eight years than Hillary Clinton, she's just awful, patronizing and arrogant, phony to the core, and downright annoying.

Interesting read about Hillary at

http://www.blackcommentator.com

/271/271_col_clinton_repudiate_ties_christian_right.html

"Will Clinton Repudiate Her Ties to the Christian Right?" by David Love (Color of Law)

which relates to Obama-race thing. Point being that it's not simple GOP operatives, but part the extended fascist and crazy-religious networks.

Actually -- read the whole issue -- including Pinkney's criticisms of Obama, so no one should think that voting him in as the best available is necessarily great prize. And read Pinkney's closing remark about how people organizing is the only true solution.

I'm amazed at the statistics showing over 50% of middle income voters cast ballots for Bush. Can anyone say Diebold? The power-elite are playing us again; giving us a choice of one of their hand picked Council on Foreign Relations candidates. Obama says he knows little about the CFR, even though his wife is a top official there, and his top advisor is Trilateral Zbigniew Brezinski One World Order. Hillary gets more funding from the military-industrial complex then even "bombs away McCain".; she along with Bill have been to super secret Bilderberger meetings. McCain's statements of endless wars, and amnesty for illegal workers, speaks volumes. We have no choice here...just write in None of the Above! Maybe Jesse Ventura will step up as an Independent and give us hope.

I'm not real thrilled about any of the three candidates; however, I have been totally thrown off by all of Obama's lies. He has lost all credibility.

Come November, it will probably be McCain.

Let's Be Honest

Obama does have a race problem. It still amazes me that some people think that 40 years is enough to eliminate the racism in this country. Every year we have some survey that shows racism is problem. This year the U.N. had a hearing regarding racism in the U.S. and determined that racism was rampant here. And lets be honest - some white people are going to vote for Obama because he's not Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. Those people are confrontational while Obama is more of a conformist. Whether you like them or not, Jackson and Sharpton challenge the racism on the left and the right. Also, I hear the line from leftists that class is more of an issue than race. I thought Danny Glover proved that false when he famously told people his story about how he couldn't hail a cab in N.Y! You can still be rich and black or any other minority and face discrimination! So please stop saying class trumps race (even though I know you will not) lol
