Election 2008

Obama Finally Puts Race on the Table [VIDEO]

By Jon Robin Baitz, Huffington Post. Posted March 18, 2008.

Obama's latest speech reminds us that the dreams of black America do not come at the expense of white America.
Obama's Speech on Race

Today we saw and heard a preview of our brightest possible American future in Senator Barack Obama's glorious speech. This, then, is what it means to be presidential. To be moral. To have a real center. To speak honestly, from the heart, for the benefit of all. If there was any doubt about what we have missed in the anti-intellectual, ruthlessly incurious Bush years, and even the slippery Clinton ones (the years of "what is is"), those doubts were laid to rest by Barack Obama's magisterial speech today. A speech in which he distanced himself from a flawed father figure, Reverend Wright, and did so with almost Shakespearian dignity and honor.

"This is it, it's here," I thought while watching Senator Obama lay it on the line. We are finally talking about race. Slavery, Jim Crow, economic enslavement, no FHA loans, the failure of affirmative action, busing, offended whites who match offended blacks in rage and fear. Obama shined a light on the conservative talk show hosts who fan white resentments, and at the same time, did not dismiss the reasons for the resentments. He reminded us that the dreams of black America do not come at the expense of white America.

Someone running for the highest office in the land finally talked about it -- the dark and secret swamp that we Americans dodge at every possible opportunity. As he finished the searing truth telling, I realized that this was not so much a speech but rather a unifying call to arms, an insistence that American people act on change. This was an order and a prayer from someone worthy of being called Commander in Chief -- an order that as a bruised and bloodied nation we finally discuss that what unites us, as well as that which divides us. So we can grow, together as a people.

Barack Obama's speech, perhaps one of the most important in modern political history pushed us as a people to move beyond race and gender, beyond Democrat and Republican, beyond politics and into reviving the spirit of the nation itself. To talk, to talk at home, at work, at the dinner table. To really finally talk. What a great day, and where else in the world but in the United States? Today I am very proud to be an American.

Digg!

Yes, I felt the same way. A politician finally telling the truth about race in this country and bringing us up to a higher level rather than rolling in the mud. Obama has shown himself as a true leader and someone who can unite this country.

The More We Differentiate the more we Discriminate...!

Was this supposed to fix the huge damage potential of Rev. Wright if so for my money it didn't do the job...

It was too me more akin to preaching to the choir..

Those Obama had to reach were those who will be influenced by the swift boating to come in the general election and those susceptible to the accusations God forbid that's he is Muslim..

I don't think this speech which was properly focused and short and direct..enough it was as usual to general and vague and generic..even to some degree a rationalization..

Having run for elected office what he needed was something strong short focused direct and unequivocal..!

This speech was not that it lacked the sound bites he needed to create..

The proof is if this story and problem caused by Rev. Wright goes away..I suspect it will not, to the degree he hoped from this speech..

I saw the I Have A Dream Speech given live this was not that..no matter how much it is spun by who ever may try and spin it..

Had I written any of it for him I'd have hammered on:

"The America I see is an America of one standard and one people American, that can in our future be the only standard..The more we differentiate the more we discriminate, that is the hope I have, that is my dream as Martin had a dream and that is the change I want to bring..!"

"If we do not come together as a people one people then we will fail in this ever more competitive and dangerous world..which sees us as Americans not all these different sub divisions and groups with our whole but Americans and if we do not work together then we shall fail together..!"

I see a real age preference between voters for Clinton and Obama. Younger voters I know seem to be quite enthused about Obama, and every older woman (except me) is in favor of Hillary. When I asked my 88 year old mother why she was so enthralled with Hillary, she said, "I want to see a woman president before I die. If she is not the candidate, I will not vote at all." Quite depressing, really.

Speeches don't matter in the end

Obama is full of sound and fury signifying nothing. He will not change anything because he is beholden to corporations like all the other so-called viable candidates. You only get this far by selling out. Do you think corporations would allow Obama to become president if they didn't think they could control him?

Let's say for instance that I'm wrong and Obama really does want to bring about change. So did JFK. So did MLK. Noticing a pattern here? Obama won't because he can't and that's the end of it.

Until we get the money out of politics we are having a debate about the substance of nothing. Dumb-downed America will continue to ridicule and blame Kucinich and Nader for our own shortcomings when in fact real change via "people before profits" policies are what is sorely needed for the rebuilding of this nation and world. It should not surprise me that Americans fall for this tripe. It will also not surprise me when they regret it.....over and over again when they do it again in another four years. This country was over as soon as the Federal Reserve got chartered in 1913.

The reason some people think this speech is not political enough is basically because they don't have the ears to hear. They don't have the consciousness to understand. They don't--really--have the hearts to want to live in a new and higher reality. So sorry. Obama not talking dirty enough for you? Too bad, so sad. This is the reason this country is so divided. It is a spiritual divide. Not one of creed, race or gender.

Who is brave enough to come to a higher level of thinking and self-effacement? If not the people of this country, then who?

Obama said it himself, it's not about Obama. It's about YOU, people of the United States! YOU have the power to change yourselves. No politician, pastor or employer, distraction or drug will do it for you. It's about listening to and loving each other, living the golden rule, and learning to hear from the spirit of God that lives in and speaks to our hearts.

Words do not have magical power to change things all by themselves. But when they set a tone and a context for the discussion that is going on in our democracy, words do make a difference.

As a people, we are facing a most critical time. We cannot afford to get our priorities twisted. We will need the cooperation and best efforts of every American to survive the looming catastrophes of climate and energy. The petrochemical age is coming to a close and along with it the petrodollar.

It is ironic that we must choose between two outstanding leaders after 30 years of mediocrity. Hillary can get the necessary work done faster than anyone. But I am afraid she could be beat by a McCain/Rice ticket. Barack can win, and that is what the times call for.

The man is half white, everyone. Why is everyone focussed on him being black? Why does he not own his mother's race? She who raised him?
That is if we must get into the colour of anyone's skin.
Grow up America!
Deal with the real issues. Hope ain't an issue.
A tanking economy is. Illegal invasions of other countries are. No meters on the oil wells of Iraq are. Foreclosures are. The greatest single transfer of wealth from public to private ownership in the history of the world is.
Wake up!

How dare he like his pastor? Who cares if the pastor introduced him to his faith or not? Lets face it, the pastor has some really wacked out political views, and he sometimes expresses them in CHURCH!

How DARE Obama disagree with the man's political views and still agree with his religious ones? Religion and politics are inseperable!!

If the founding fathers would have wanted there to be some form of seperation between church and state, they'd have written it somewhere!!

Wait, what? They what? Oh, well, in that case, never mind.

It is the mind of Obama that understands these issues and the need for these issues to be articulated in a way that reaches out to all Americans. It is the courage to tackle them head on and deal with them that shows true leadership. I believe that these characteristics alone show his ability to lead this country. It is not just platitudes and rhetoric--it is the mark of a person who is given to clarity of thought and action. I have no doubt the decisions and policies that will come from him and the team he assembles will be made with the same desire to heal old wounds. Until this moment, I felt only Edwards had that understanding to trascend the political game. Obama has earned my support with this. Obama for president!

I see ALTnet is still putting their eggs in Obama's basket...his speech???? More smooth talking...OJ was a smooth talker...so was Scott Patterson...most people with severe disorders are smooth talkers...

The proof that he lacks sanity? You do not HANG out with people you do NOT believe in.

You cannot hang out with your church for years and years and then when you are found out say with smooth talk, "OH, we need to be TOGETHER as a nation, we need hope for ALL races...etc."

Obama wants to be presient so he can carry out his agenda...just like Bush had an agenda...

Let me tell you...I grew up in the Northeast when the Blacks forced Whites from neighborhoods in the sixties...they turned it around on us..called it the "White Flight," and said WE were prejudice...we opened our hearts and our doors to help...we were physically wounded doing so...we had to leave...we lost our homes, our community, our children lost thier friends, thier schools...WE WERE ALL WILLING TO SHARE...

The Black drive is NOT to JOIN Whites in community...it is to have Whites pay for something we did not do...something that was done nearly three-hundred years ago...STARTED by the Blacks in Africa...sold to the European Portguese...and then brought here to the states and sold to WhITEs...but for some reason only WE are responsible...

What happened in the sixties .... was BOTH races.

What is happening now? Per capita...Black on Black and Black on White crime is higher than White on Black crime.

It is time to Stop EVERYTHING. Stop Affirmative Action, stop cow-towing to a race which has learned to holler "poor me."

When the first Democratic primary went down at Howard University this past fall, one of the professors there asked the candidates, "If elected, what will you do for the BLACK community."

Unfortunately not ONE of them had the balls to say, "Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what YOU can do for your country." But therein lies the problem. Black Americans do not consider themselves apart of AMERICA. They wish to be segregated...self-imposed segregation...by people like Wright and Farakhan....and OBAMA.

Vote for Obama will only serve to further seperate the races.

It is quite evident and should be to ALL that it is NOT the Whites who have a problem with race (of course there are isolated incidents), it is the BLACKS.

They took down entertainer IMUS...but they didnt take down Chris Rock (no offense to Chris Rock, I think he is funny), however, he is just as bad as IMUS...only one example...

There is an old saying, "What is fair for the goose is fair for the gander."

Black AMerica...it is time like Bill Cosby says for you to STOP whinning and get up off the couch and join your neighbors to make your community a better place by embracing each other's diversness.

Obama sucks...he is racist...you don't hang out with the KKK unless you are, and thus you don't hang out with Black militants unless you are...NO matter what kind of crap is coming out of your mouth...

ACTIONS SPEAK LOUDER THAN WORDS.

His speech is Bullshit...his speech is hogwash...

Obama has NEVER injected race into his campaign--unlike Hilary who has played the gender card from day one. Too many other ignorant people have been the ones to endlessly focus on it. He can't help being a mixed-race man(though let's be honest the only thing most fucknards see is the darkness of his skin--if he never mentioned he was half-white, most would never know or care).

His speech was dead-on, and the problem is that way too many people want to spend time in the negative, or they prefer to continue things as they are. This should have never been an issue in the first place. Who really gives a damn what Jeremiah Wright said anyway? Frankly it's pretty hypocritical for anyone in this forum to criticize Rev. Wright because many of you have echoed the same words.

Oh wait--it's an angry black man--let's be scared now!

It's more than being the CEO of America, "the Decider." It's about making everyone better, about everyone doing their best. That's what a leader does.

Obama reframed the challenges in America in many ways today. That's what a leader does, too. He revealed himself as head-and-shoulders above anything we have come to know about McCain or Hillary.

Now he just has to win, and then have strong support among enough Washington insiders to govern.

I am pretty sure I know what I am going to get from a Hillary or McCain set of government initiatives. Pretty much more Republican Lite. I think Obama is the right person for this country, especially if we go into an economic crash. And he doesn't have one policy on the table to deal with that.

I think Barack did a good job with the speech. And I think it is dumb to suggest he can't like the minister and refer to him as a spiritual guide while disagreeing with him on his inflammatory rhetoric (which, as others have said here, isn't all wrong, just perhaps said in an overly inflammatory and inelegant way).

Someone mentioned why Barack doesn't address his mother all that much, but he did say in the preface to the latest edition of the book about his childhood that had he known she was going to die so early he might have thought more to focus on the parent who was there rather than the one who wasn't. I think it is natural for a person to focus on the parent who wasn't there (his dad was pretty much out of his life by age 2), either hating that parent or building him and her into some sort of idealized personage.

I sort of doubt that Barack is all that caught up on religious dogma and wanted to be part of an organization that sought to lift up African Americans.

By Barack's own account, his mother was a secular humanist. And she's the one who primarily raised him. And his grandfather was a rather eclectic man when it came to matters of the spirit (he briefly joined Unitarian Universalists -- and organization to which I belong -- until his wife put the kibosh on that).

So, I wish we lived in a society where a man like Barack Obama could focus on secular humanism, but if he did that he probably couldn't get elected dog catcher in this country.

So, I commend him for joining an organization that seeks to uplift African Americans, and for sticking with that church in spite of some differences between him and his minister. It is clear that he mustn't have been thinking of running for president (despite his early "kindergarten papers") or if he did he had the courage to stay with that church anyway.

The solution to much of the problems in the lives of African Americans who are struggling lies in their hands. Sure, society is still an impediment, but when people like Obama can rise to where he is, and Rice, and Powell, etc., that shows success is possible for African Americans. To reach that black underclass we need people like Barack Obama to set an example, to call people to a higher level.

In my hometown we had a chance a few years ago to elect a great African American as our mayor. I live in a southern city, and he had been our sheriff. He was good enough to oversee the jail house but not good enough to be mayor as he was trounced by some rich, white politcal neophyte. Now, our city is in the grip of a great murder epidemic, and most of that is in black community. We missed an opportunity to perhaps change the dynamics of the black community in our city by not voting for this man.

I like Obama's sticking with an activist, black-oriented church, and I like that he has that secular humanistic background (which he can't much talk about). That his pastor says inflammatory stuff...does anyone really think Obama buys all that? He just doesn't seem like the kind of person who would feed into that. Like most people in an organization, he takes what he needs from it and leaves the rest.

I listened closely to every word. What a pleasure to listen to someone who seems centered and logical and can actually speak - a big change from Bush!

Then I heard him say something that didn't quite sit right. He was caught in a lie. He originally had said he never heard his pastor say any of those racist anti American comments. In his speech, he then acknowledged that he indeed did hear his pastor make those comments.

So now I have to ask why did he stay in that chrurch for all those years and forge a close relationship with this guy knowing how racist he was.

And the thing that really puzzles me is that I'm probably still going to vote for him!

I like the guy (hate his wife and pasator)and even though caught in a lie, I respect him for having the balls to standing with his racist pastor.

So America is gojng to be stupid enough to elect a racist President - can it be any worse than a white warmonger!

is that obama probably doesn't believe in adam and eve and apple's of sin and floods and virgins birthing godsons. he just needed a church to 1.) get into the networks of the communities he was trying to organize and 2.) be, you know, "viable" as an american politician. once obama gets through this (and i'm sure he will) i'm happy it alll happened because maybe it gives a little more evidence that at least he isn't as pathetically moderate as he has constructed himself to be.

My stomach is turning as I listen to the talking heads in media mouth uninformed opinions about Dr. Wright, and the black Church.

Black oratory, or black preaching, has traditionally had elements of exaggeration, both in style and content. And Church folk, Black Church Folk, know this, and understand this.

Taken in isolation, and heard from the perspective of uninformed (ignorant) white journalists, black academicians, and the like; Dr. Jeremiah Wrights comments seem off base.

But in the context of traditional black preaching, Dr. Wright's comments are expressive of a deep suspicion of our government and lingering resentment over past and present wrongs.

Informed black church folk got the message in the expression of the words, more so than the words themselves. Read the history of coded messages in the songs of African slaves.

Black oral communication is so full of codes and symbolism that we take for granted; we don't even think about it until whites dare to comment on and criticize that which they do not understand.

All of mankind had its origins in Africa. We citizens of the USA are all African-Americans. The color of Jesus' skin would be much more the color of Obama's than lily white McCain. But then skin color doesn't matter, only the "Content of our character". Right? Well, to bigots it's always about skin color. No need to be bothered with studying a candidate's policies. Forty-three presidential races in a row have been a choice between a white man and a white man. Listen to the bigots and hate radio. Racism is a sickness that will consume your soul.

A Higher Ground

It's obvious - Obama goes towards the higher ground that most can only imagine. I imagine that he is my good friend, helping me with my various problems. Lucky for all of us, he might be in the situation to help move this country towards some light. It's sickening to realize how we 'ordinary people' are lied to and mislead. The mass media has decided to make Rev. Wright the biggest news story for days on end and , in the meantime, Wall Street is going under. Anyone notice that? We need a brilliant leader now to help direct the way because it seems that we will need the best of all of us to come together for the sake of our future and our country. The options include McCain who doesn't understand the economy and who, also, today revealed his total lack of understanding about the differences between the Sunnis and Shites and Iraq and Iran. Wow! And Hillary.
What a gal - willing to throw kitchen sinks and rules and anything else out the window. She truly represents the lower ground & people who support her must truly be the same. Who supports a ballot with only one name as an honest election? That's Hillary. Let's be clear too that it was during the Clinton Administration that the most important regulatory law was lifted from Wall Street. So as our economy tanks, I'm waiting for Obama's speech about this and not Hillary's one. You know the one where she tells us, 'I'm glad he spoke about that - it's very important"

What is it about the peace and prosperity of the Clinton years that voters don't seem to get?
They prefer today?
They want an untested Fundie Christian in the White House?
To do what?
To continue the devastation, turmoil and economic cataclysm of the past eight years?
To make even more enemies and lose more respect out in the real world?
Oh, I get it.

I hope Toni Morrison heard the speech

Mr Obama's speech clearly demonstrated how uninformed and divisive Morrison's characterization was of Clinton as "the first Black" president. Ms Morrison seems to have forgotten, and Mr Obama so eloquently reminded us, that not only among African Americans, but also among those who identify themselves as White are there single-parent families in poverty lacking decent health care, etc. These are failures of our society at large, and not of this or that so-called racial group, and even though the depth of suffering and destruction they cause is not uniform, the failures as such affect all of us. Until we re-valuate what is important in this society, until we have the sense of values that simply dismisses the "pettiness that plays so rough" will we remain divided; only our suffering from society's failures will unite us. Alternatively, we can choose the unity for which Mr Obama argues and correct the damage exacted against our society from Reagan-Friedman politico-economics.

I have never heard so many empty words in a speech outside of the church and the office AGM

The man would be no different to any moderate Republican if he weren't half black -family values, religion, set gender roles, elite education, votes for ownership of guns& CONCEALED carrying of guns for retired police!?

Well, Obama is from the old-boy network of Harvard

He could be a pretty successful religious preacher judging by what I saw

Many male journos have really been taken in by the 'marketing' of Obama. It's great to have a shining male hope just when some woman seemed to be heading for the Whitehouse. Oh no, we can't have that, a woman?! Perhaps Obama himself in a moment of patriarchal clarity saw a chance to seize upon this when he decided to run during this campaign. Wld he have run agst Gore, Kerry?

A few empty words later &we realize in our sobriety how cleverly he fooled us during the party. The man is a religious conservative- don't be fooled into thinking otherwise

Anyone can peddle empty words. I too often rifle thru the thesaurus to come up with synonyms to aggrandize my writing...when I was a highschool debater! But for x's sake, this isn't an academic exercise in hearing the sound of one's own voice. It's about real issues & people. Get off your school debate soapbox Mr Obama and say something REAL!

The things he keeps saying 'hope','hope'&'as Americans we are all similar','we're more similar than different'. What a load of garbage. The one fact about America that even WE admit is that we are so different. From Eastcoast liberals to red-necks & everything between, the whole country is impossible to compartmentalize as one

If you want to treat everyone as the same, then you will never solve any real issues. We are different. Now treat us with specific, targeted solutions. We don't want to take a Tylenol for our cancer. We don't want an Anacin for our heart condition. You can't give us rhetoric like a painkiller and kiss us goodnight

The country is divided, and no amount of PAPERING OVER WITH RHETORIC will ever solve any real issues

I am fed up with more empty words from someone who does not have a clue about how the world's differences really affect the social, emotional and material direction of our lives

If he had worked for no money eg. in some charity, I'd have been more convinced by his words. But he was a corporate lawyer. I don't need some corporate lawyer from Harvard to tell me about 'hope'. Easy for him. When you're that privileged or that steeped in politics, all you do need is hope. For the rest of us-for the poor, the unemployed, the sick, you need a damn sight more than 'hope'. You need solutions

Pro-Obamaites-If you think you haven't fallen for the hype, try comparing Obama to Kucinich or Nader, & then reconsider your opinions of Obama. They're male so the gender thing is out of the equation. Obama is a religious, corporate rightwinger in comparison

Finally Obama is a snake. What a wily politician. To go to church with the Reverend, be friends for years, follow his words, until erm, the Revd came out & said stuff that could hurt Obama's campaign. Then cut him out. Distance him from yourself. That's nice. That's just the kind of person you can trust. One who changes his spots to suit each opportunity. I prefer the devil I know to the devil I don't, & I see that Obama cannot be trusted

The spin from Obama's camp works so well that supposedly leftwing people fall for it

The sad fact of our world is so many good people fall for spin, hype, &marketing tripe. I'm fed up with it. That's why I choose a candidate who just says what she is & that's that. Maybe you don't like her;maybe she seems hard, but I consider lies and misrepresentations of the nature of our problems to be far worse

After listening to Barack Obama yesterday, I had the realization that he is not JUST a black man. Black America cannot claim him all to themselves; he is WHITE ALSO and, as such, I, as a white American, claim him. I identify with his Mom's struggles. He spoke to both the White and Black experiences in this country. In fact, he spoke to All Americans' experiences. I pray to God that the Clinton machine does not attempt to bring him down or do any harm to him. I don't trust the Clintons...not one iota. God Bless Barack Obama!
