Election 2008

Hillary Steps Up Attacks on Obama as Judgment Day Nears

By Jonathan Stein, MotherJones.com. Posted February 25, 2008.

Clinton's campaign has increased its attacks on Obama before Ohio and Texas, but is it to blame for circulating a picture of him in Somali garb?

The conciliatory moment at the end of the Democrats' debate last week in Texas wasn't a sign of things to come. In fact, it was more of a head fake by Hillary Clinton, who has launched several attacks on Barack Obama in recent days, some of which are downright nasty. The remaining week before the primaries in Texas and Ohio may be a slimy one for the Democrats.

It started last week when the Clinton campaign attempted to connect Obama to two Hyde Park radicals that were part of the domestic terror group known as the Weather Underground. The pair, who are unrepentant about setting bombs in government buildings in the 1960s (possibly because they took care to avoid harming any bystanders), hosted an event at their house in the mid-1990s that Obama attended. One of them donated $200 to his state senatorial campaign. The connection is a weak one; there is no evidence Obama has a relationship with these people. What's more, Bill Clinton pardoned a different member of the Weather Underground, also unrepentant, who had served 16 years in prison on federal charges. The attack didn't get much traction in the press, but will undoubtedly be raised again by the McCain campaign should Obama win the Democratic nomination.

The Clinton assault on Obama then moved to Ohio.

On Saturday, Clinton went nuclear on Obama for distributing two mailers in the Buckeye State that she feels unfairly represent her positions on health care and NAFTA. Video of the tirade (and I don't use that word in a pejorative sense; objectively speaking, Clinton went on a tirade) can be seen at right. The sniping back and forth on these two issues has gotten so vicious that neither campaign has clean hands, though in my judgment Obama is mostly right about Clinton's record on NAFTA (she pushed it, along with other Clinton administration officials, when her husband was president) while Clinton is mostly right about health care (Obama's claim that folks who are unable to afford health care will have their arms twisted by an H. Clinton Administration until they pony up is fear-mongering about a core progressive objective). Factcheck.org has already done the heavy lifting on this subject, so I'll point you to it: go here for an analysis of the campaigns' disagreement over trade, and here for the same on health care.

After the diatribe in Ohio, Clinton moved to Rhode Island on Sunday, where she mocked Obama's message of unity and hope. With the video at left, you can judge for yourself if she crossed the line. It's safe to say that Clinton oversimplifies Obama's approach to government and theory of change. It also belittles inspiration and unity's power to push an agenda. The best that can be said of it is that it contains no factual errors and is probably par for the course in a presidential campaign.

And then, finally, we've got the Drudge photo (below). Just before 7:00 am this morning, Drudge posted a photo of Obama in Somali garb with the headline "CLINTON STAFFERS CIRCULATE 'DRESSED' OBAMA." Circulating the photo is dirty politics at its worst: It provides fodder for the wing-nuts who are making the case, in emails and fliers, that Obama is a secret Muslim who doesn't say the pledge of allegiance and was educated in madrassas. If you don't think that photo will be passed around every day until the general election, you're crazy.

We don't know for a fact that Clinton campaign is in fact distributing the photo. Drudge doesn't substantiate his claim that "stressed Clinton staffers circulated [the] photo over the weekend." Obama's top folks are attacking the Clinton campaign for passing it around, but in a conference call this morning Obama surrogates couldn't definitively state that the Clinton campaign is behind it. The Clinton campaign released a statement about the photo, saying:

If Barack Obama's campaign wants to suggest that a photo of him wearing traditional Somali clothing is divisive, they should be ashamed. Hillary Clinton has worn the traditional clothing of countries she has visited and had those photos published widely.
This is nothing more than an obvious and transparent attempt to distract from the serious issues confronting our country today and to attempt to create the very divisions they claim to decry.

This, of course, is nonsense. The Clinton campaign knows that Obama dressed in stereotypically African or Muslim gear plays different than Clinton dressed in the same. Clinton communications director Howard Wolfson shuffled when he was asked about the statement's lack of a clear denial in a conference call with reporters this afternoon. "No," said Wolfson when asked if someone in the campaign had sent the photo to Drudge. "Not to my knowledge." Later, he was asked if he would press the staff to reveal if they had sent it. He responded by citing the size of the campaign. "I'm not in a position to ask 700 people to come and answer questions," he said. "We are not aware of [a staffer sending the photo]. We don't condone it." In other words, it's not that they didn't send the photo; it's that they don't know if they did.

It's possible the Clinton campaign isn't behind this. But the campaign has a history of trying to use racism against Obama. It's not a stretch to think in these desperate days it would use xenophobia as well. Moreover, the timing of the photo's release fits into a pattern of attacks that the Clinton campaign has orchestrated over the past half-week. With Clinton's chances of winning the nomination diminishing, the campaign may have decided it is going to go nasty before it goes away.

Desperate candidates do desperate things.

As Mr. Obama, himself, suggested, the campaign is now entering the "silly season".

Double Standard

It's become abundantly clear that Hillary will be attacked for anything, while Obama will be given a free pass on everything. Unless she remains "sugar and spice and everything nice", she will be viewed as a bitch and he is allowed to say anything against her and that's quite alright. After all, it doesn't matter if he distorts her record or misinforms, he knows people will just "believe" everything that comes out of his mouth.

This is a campaign, not a beauty contest and Obama has not been vetted by the media or his followers. Therein likes the double standard.

As Tina Fey so aptly put it, "bitch is the new black", so get used to it! Those of us who haven't drunk Obama's kool aid are sick and tired of the double standard. If he can't stand the heat, he has no business running for the most powerful position in the world.

Why try to show Obama as a Muslim?

Let's compare the "heated" campaign tactics. Obama's people put out a mailer saying Hillary helped push NAFTA for her husband and that she credits it in her book as an achievement of his administration. The campaign also put out a statement, which Obama has stated at several debates, that Hillary's health care plan would enforce its mandates by "going after the wages" of those who did not choose to purchase health insurance. At worst the shot at her health care position may have been a little overdone.

Hillary retorted by saying, "shame on you, Barack Obama!". Her campaign later put out a picture of a much younger Obama in Kenya, dressed in clothing that could be interpreted as Muslim garb. Whatever claim she may have had to the ethical high ground went down the drain. First of all, it is quite clear that Obama is Christian. Secondly, would being a Muslim disqualify him from being President? The Obama campaign has characterized this as fear-mongering. It's more than that: it's religious bigotry.

Frankly, I'd rather have someone in the White House who is a little more objective about other religions and cultures than someone who feels that falsely implying that a candidate is Muslim is a serious attack.

I can understand how frustrated Hillary must be. She firmly believes she is ready to carry out the duties of the presidency. She also knows that Obama would be a better candidate if he had a few more years of experience. Nonetheless, the fact that she has run a less efficient, less effective campaign given to emotional attacks and counter-attacks suggests that she is not as ready as she claims.

Hillary's biggest problem is her condescending attitude. She can't see why any intelligent person would consider a candidate other than herself. She would have been better off using her intellect to understand and learn from other points of view.

Bush wears Chinese robe

Everyone needs to get a grip on the ridiculous clothing story. Lets recall Bush's November 2006 visit with Chinese President Hu Jintao. Photos were splashed across newspapers around the world of Bush wearing a traditional Chinese ao dai (long robe) along side President Jintao..they looked like fashion twins. Fox News link
here
It was a gesture of respect- and nobody claimed Bush was going "commie".

Check out the following videos on Youtube about Hillary. Then spread 'em far & wide...

I had thought of Hillary as just another machine politician. These videos make it clear that she is far worse... Not that Obama is perfect, but he's IMHO a lot less evil.

Does Hillary's Pantsuit Turn Red When She's Angry?

Hillary needs to be able to deliver an attack line without seeping venom. You get more bees with honey, just ask Barack Obama. Tellingly, the Clinton campaign did not post her diatribe on YouTube, someone else did, which leads me to think she veered off script. These are the last desperate gasps of air from the House of Clinton. Bill ... Hillary ... it's been fun.

Madrassas and SCARE ADS for Texas

Of course Barak attended a madrassa...he was a kid, living where his (then living) mother was. If she'd married some guy from Spain, he'd have attended an escuela!! Oh, teh horrorz!! When his (upper class WHITE) mother died, he went to live with Grandma and Grandpa, and attended American schools. DUH. Saying he attended madrassas is saying---he went to school.

Grow up and learn about other languages, America. Fer cryin' out loud, even W learned enough to call his "collected boogiemen" by the same name he calls his most wealthy, upper caste New Englander supporters--The Base--which translated is Al Qaida.

Oh, if you are a member of one particular on-line opinion polling group, you MIGHT have seen the speculative ad Hillary's crew was testing yesterday. It said "Unsafe!! Your children, night, sleep, but PHONE CALL WHITE HOUSE!! OH NO, TERROR, PANIC!! Who has experience?? One term Senator BAD Two term Senator GOOD!!

Yep, Hillary's pulling at LEAST a Homeland Security Orange in that ad. Why get rid of Da Shrub if we're just going to have another terror-monger in there??

When did a woman I formerly respected sell out, lose her mind and become a Right Wingnutette?? Mrs. Clinton, I'm the fat lady, and THIS song's for you. "It's too late, baby now, it's too late..."

Dreck report
Posted by: BST on Feb 26, 2008 5:31 AM
Current rating: 2    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Hillary Clinton would not sanction the circulation of a photo such as the one with Obama in native garb. It simply makes no sense. She's got a thousands photos, I'm sure, of her myriad travels into various countries, wearing indigenous outfits and gear.

She's tough and she can fight, but the photo has all the earmarks of a renegade act either by someone in her camp who did a really stupid thing or one of her detractors from who knows where, wanting to discredit her.

Technology makes it simple for anyone to disseminate anything. The Drudge Report categorically stated it was circulated by the Clinton campaign; methinks Matt Drudge should show proof on his Web site, names attached.

This is a very serious charge to make against Hillary Clinton this point in the campaign.

Karl Rove-tactics won't win THIS election
Posted by: kmcd on Feb 26, 2008 6:20 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
It's really sad for the Clinton campaign to take these Karl Rove-tactics. This photo is the latest of many where she has tried to insinuate that Obama is a Muslim. Remember she fired 2 of her staffers earlier for the same antics. Obama is not a Muslim and a good Christian wouldn't be so banal to imply that he is in an attempt to promote themselves. That's just sick. Then her rant on Saturday "Shame on you!..." eyes buldging - reminded me of those bad-mother days. The fact is that she has supported NAFTA more than not, just like she has supported the war in Iraq until late 2005. Her quip at one of the debates of "...if I knew then what I know now..." is completely unacceptable. She can't have it one way -- "...I have 35 years of experience..." without being accountable for her actions during those 35 years. As a woman, it really irritates me that there are some woman who are saying that she's losing because she's a woman. Hillary is losing becausae she's Hillary and she -- and Bill -- and most of the pundits don't get what's going on. There is a social movement going on, led by Barak Obama. His leadership is motivating and getting people to get involved again -- to truly take back our country again. Hillary isn't losing because she's a woman, she's losing because she's trying to "fix" her campaign instead of understanding what America is saying. "It's about America, stupid." Hillary is competent, no doubt. She's just not a transformational leader. We are at a point in our history when we all -- either subconsciously or consciously -- know that we need someone to bring all of us together to the table so that we can roll up our sleeves and fix this mess. Hillary is saying "I can fix it for you -- here are my great plans" much like she did with her health care plan -- she goes into back rooms with her advisors and works like the Dickens on a plan -- throws open the doors and says "Here -- this will fix it!" but it falls flat because she doesn't build coalitions, she doesn't bring everyone to the table. She'll make a great cabinet member -- and yes, we'll have a woman president -- but not Hillary -- and if she were truly a patriot, she would see what's happening and step aside and join in. "It's about America, stupid!"

All right, maybe Hillary Clinton isn't the perfect person for the job of President, and maybe she IS frustrated with the realization that her early advantages have evaporated, and maybe she IS a bit arrogant in her belief that she's somehow ENTITLED to the Democratic nomination. There's nothing bad or wrong with being a human being, and a smart and savvy one at that. She's far better at her worst than mccain is at his best; don't forget that. I only hope that if Obama wins this thing, he has the good sense to appoint Clinton to a cabinet position like Secretary of State or some other position in tune with her obvious attributes. While we're at it, I'd also like to see John Edwards as Attorney General, and Al Gore as head of the EPA.

HRC the Rape Apologist -- Disgusting

It's clear she cut her teeth on leveling the 'nuts and sluts' attack on anyone who dare complain that her husband sexually harassed them, in this 1975 case where she went strangely way overboard in the defense of a rapist -- who had organized the gang-rape of a 12-year-old girl.

First HRC attempted to have the gruesome physical evidence thrown out (and failed) and then attacking the child's sanity and credibility...in a Rovian "some people say"

This article demolishes the "I was only doing my job" lame-ass excuse.

Fighting on behalf of childrens rights -- for example, their right to be gang-raped by rednecks in a pickup truck parked in a ditch somewhere in Arkansas.

The best comment I've read about the incident is "Apparently she's comfortable with that."
