Election 2008

Is Huckabee Waiting for God to Smite John McCain?

By Will Durst, AlterNet. Posted February 25, 2008.

The GOP is down to a man who believes humans and dinosaurs walked the earth together and another who can refute that -- since he was there.

Just when you thought the Republican primary was all over but the shouting, along comes The New York Times with a potential bombshell about possible indiscretions that may or may not have involved John McCain and a woman who does not necessarily look unlike his wife. But don't let that fool you, the charges aren't that solid. Murkier than 8 mm footage of Sasquatch grilling on a Cayman Islands condo balcony filmed from a boat across the harbor on a foggy night. The only certainty is the Gray Lady managed to unite the Conservative Right to fight the reviled shared enemy they represent. Isn't that just like the liberal media elite? Throwing synthetic dirt on the hill to make Obama's comeback climb even more impressive.

McCain's response to the suppositious expose about ostensible malfeasance did provide his wife, Cindy, with serious face time to demonstrate that she was more than just the blonde lady who looks like the head stewardess for Republican Air. And the fact that the lobbyist in question, Vicki Iseman, is her doppelganger, simply means John has really good taste in Stepford Wives.

Over at the Mike Huckabee camp, the shouting is tinged in desperation. But still this Energizer Razorback Bunny refuses to give up. As the former portly former governor from Arkansas says, we've entered the "survival of the fittest" phase of the election. Strange talk from a man who doesn't believe in evolution. From my perspective it seems more like a "gnawing off one of your legs to escape from the coyote trap" phase of the election.

The GOP is down to a man who believes humans and dinosaurs walked the earth together and another who can refute that since he was there. Huckabee explains away his Sisyphean perseverance by saying he doesn't believe in numbers, he believes in miracles. The hell does that mean? He's waiting for God to smite John McCain dead? Don't laugh. It could be working. I got to tell you, I'm worried about the good Senator from Arizona. He don't look so good.

Not just the deer in the headlights grimace at his recent entanglement-denial press conference. I don't know if you noticed but the lump in his face that he had surgically removed a couple years ago is back, and it brought its big brother with it. Looks like he's hoarding nuts for the winter. That can't be good. Generally, I find people are rather disinclined to vote for a president who resembles a marsupial.

This is particularly distressing because, let's face it, Lumpy is not a young man. At 72, he'd be the oldest white man to ascend to the Presidency. What does it say about a country when the president's motorcade continually holds up traffic doing 30 in the fast lane with their left blinkers on? State Dinners held at Denny's on Wednesdays to take advantage of the senior discount? His campaign slogan: "Hey, you punks, get off my lawn."

The allegation by the Times could be a speed bump or a spike strip to the front wheels of the Straight Talk Express. After all, McCain's major attraction to independents is his credibility. And his steadfastness, best exemplified by his early support of the Iraqi surge and his expectation for us to be there for 100 years. No big surprise. We still have a base in Cuba: a residue from the Spanish American War, which ended in 1898. Ask John McCain. He was there too.

Digg!

You win the award....

You win the award for the biggest piece of trash journalism that I have read this entire campaign, and I've seen some "doozies"! It is unthinkable that you would write such trash about two such fine men as Mike Huckabee and John McCain. Both these men are strong, determined, gutsy leaders. A leader is not someone who just quits when they are behind. If your favorite sports team was behind and just quit would you think highly of them? Both McCain and Huckabee have been down in polls and public opinion and BOTH of them have held tough and refused to give up, working on principle, not media adoration!! These men are BOTH to be admired. To imply that Mike Huckabee wishes harm to McCain, is just ludicrous! And to try and indicate health issues on Senator McCain is just the worst taste yet!!! I am a Huckabee supporter and have admired and been inspired by his gutsy race to the White House, and most importantly, the way he and John McCain have remained positive about each other. This article disgusts me.......

to attack McCain for his age. He should be critiqued for his actions. Why should McCain be too old for the WH if its still good enough to vote untill your 130. I see no problem with his age, but a lot of problems with his political actions, including bending over and condoning torture and embrasing the people who smeared him 8 years ago (to name just 2)

If the best we can do when we look at these two men is to dismiss merely them because they are old guy and a man who believes in a higher power, then it is WE who have the problem.

Honestly, I'm just waiting for the other shoe to drop:
....curious to see if Huck shows true Christian colors and publicly denounces McCain and his agenda. As stated by Jim Wallis and by Sojourners, the issue of torture should be the most important reason of many as they strongly urge Huck to NOT support McCain, but the GOP string-pullers and their sheeple are afraid to rock the boat.

Come on, Huck - which is it?: God's word or Man's agenda?
Caesar's things to Caesar and God's things to God?
Or just politics as usual?

His answer will show his true character.....

The Real Issues

Huckabee may still be waiting for God to act but the NYT, bete noir of the right, seems to be doing His work.

McCain's age isn't the issue, it's his experience. Considering the damage that the hawkish neocons have done to us militarily, economically, environmentally, constitutionally, judicially, internationally and socially, that's all the reason we need not to vote for him.

McCain's attacks on Obama for saying he'd meet Raul Castro are sheer hypocrisy in light of his support for arming and aiding the vicious regimes in Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, whose human rights and terrorism records are infinitely worse than Cuba's.

the answer to illegal aliens is to outlaw abortion, I want one of you redneck supporters out there to explain to me how increasing the population of an already over crowded world will solve the existing problem of not having enough jobs to go around? He said that if we have more children we won't need cheap Mexican labor. It sounds to me as if he is saying that the more children we have the more cheap labor for the rest of us. Is he advocating the creation of a sub-human group of people to do the dirty work for the rest of us? And who makes the decisions as to which children are going to be "slave" labor and which are not? And what color will those cheap laborers be, white or brown?

The disrespect with which you refer to Sen McCain and Gov Huckabee is evidence of what is wrong with this country. People only have attitudes that rotten when they were not disciplined as children. You, Mr. Durst, need the spanking the father you never had didn't give you.

God...anyone who can put these two pieces of suckass GOPers in their appropriate place with such HUMOR deserves major accolades. A fine piece of work Durst. I have saved this article for the immediate future as the marsupial pouch-mouth gains the Republican nomination!

Besides the PTL candidate and the WWIII candidate, Ron Paul and Alan Keyes are still in the race.

I know, I know; the media says there is only two -so only two there must be.
