Election 2008

Can Bill Clinton Keep His Mouth Shut?

By Will Durst, AlterNet. Posted February 14, 2008.

The most difficult fix for the Clinton campaign? Figuring out how to get the candidate's husband to shut the hell up.

It's desperation time in Hillaryville. They're putting out fires faster than a Rocky Mountain ranger station during a lightning storm in the middle of an August drought. Due to the fact that a certain inevitability has proven to be highly evitable. And watching the nomination slip through their fingers has to be going down as easy as a deep fried fork. Causing several revisions to what was previously a dead solid game plan. Corrections that include, but are not limited to, banishment of key staffers to "integral" precincts on the outskirts of West Texas. Further attempts to wring blood out of contributors who insist on impersonating dried turnips. And the most difficult fix: figuring out how to get the candidate's husband to shut the hell up.

Yeah. Right. Good luck. You'd have a better shot at using a plastic butter knife to spay a pit pull on meth than try to muzzle this old dog. I suggest a wolf snare or tranquilizer gun as the best means to render the 42nd President of the United States docile enough to throw a choke chain around his neck. Interesting how quickly the game changes. It wasn't that long ago, rival campaigns were complaining Hillary had an unfair advantage being married to a former President. "But he gets so much press." And now it's Hillary's staff doing the complaining. "But he gets so much press."

What was once a secret weapon is now an albatross tied by a frayed rope swinging wildly from the neck of the former 1st Lady. And because of his unique stature as biggest hound in the pound, Bubba isn't just a loose cannon, he's a loose aircraft carrier in high seas. Rampaging down the campaign trail in the manner of a Japanese movie monster stomping through downtown Tokyo, using his heat vision to blast opponents and batting around members of the media like pastel bunnies off an Easter display shelf in a Hallmark Card shop. He must see himself as a guard dog protecting the hen house, no pun intended. Barack's camp accuses him of being the junkyard dog.

And we can't have that. Because everybody knows that if Mr. Obama gets the nomination, the Republicans won't be mean. They'll roll over on their backs, begging to have their bellies scratched. Worst cast scenario, they try to bruise him by throwing rubber bones at his head. Hah. I laugh. Hah. I laugh again. You want to see negative campaigning? You wait until the junior Senator from Illinois gets the nomination, because you're going to see negative campaigning that will make what they did to Michael Dukakis look like pranks played during recess at a Catholic girl's school.

Bill Clinton nuzzles and he growls. He's a boon and a bane. A southern fried Jekyll and Hyde. Smoother than a puppy's fur, and more divisive than a flea ridden German Shepherd at a Bat Mitzvah. One problem is everybody continues to introduce him as "Mr. President," like he's still in charge. That kind of thing can have an effect on a guy. If Hillary were smart, she'd sponsor a bill in Congress that would mandate all former Chief Executives be referred to as "Mr. Ex President." Kill two dogs with one stone. One dog being a certain George W Bush, whom a lot of us can't wait to call ... Mr. Ex-President.

Wow that is strong tobacco. I am certain that you looked over your shoulder while writing this Blog.
Have you noticed that your colleagues are moving their desks further away. Bill Clinton is still in the country I assume.

This article is RIGHT ON, Bill has always been his own worst enemy. Hillary can't control him, not now, not if she wins the primary. I don't believe he will even be able to keep his pants on never mind keep his mouth shut.

No one expects it to be nicer or better for Barack then it would be for HillnBill. No matter which dem candidate is ultimately selected the repug thugs will do what repug thugs do, and yes it will be VERY nasty either way. Probably the NASTIEST presidential election this country has ever witnessed, God help us all.

This is where the Clinton's lost my support:

1)Even hypothetically conceding she has a few better policy ideas, she doesn't display any desire to bring this nation together. And half of the nation doesn't display any desire to follow her leadership. Just because of her divisive politics she'll not get anything.

2)From history, it doesn't seem her administration will display any transperancy.

In that atmoshpere- she will not bring our troops home. She will not provide universal healthcare. This country will have 4-8 years of bitter battles.

3)The Clinton's have PROVEN beyond any shadow of doubt that they will do or say absolutely ANYTHING to win more power. Much like GWB they can NEVER EVER have enough power.

4)Last but certainly not least is Bill himself. He truly IS a junkyard dog. In fact, at least from a woman's point of view, dog is a VERY good word for him.

BTW, WHY won't the Clinton's disclose their tax returns?

just finished a class in simile and metaphor. If I would have had to read one more in this article my head would have exploded like a ripe melon dropped off a twenty story building and hitting blacktop on a 100 degree day in a small town in southern Mississippi... Yikes!

Will Republicans be mean to Obama or not? My sense is that they will not be, since Obama seems to possess an impenetrable force field around him that prevents meanness from affecting him. On the other hand, Republicans are notorious for divisive politicking. I won't be surprised if they try to rattle his cage with negativity, but it seems more likely that Republicans who do have good sense will soon acknowledge the futility of the meanness tactic.

Obama has raised the bar for ethical standards in political discourse, and now the rest of the players are realizing that negativity is no good disguise for a lack of substance.

Hillary has explained that she stayed with Bill following Monica after weighing what was "best" for her. (Please note that it was not the Monica incident that opened her eyes to his little penchant; that was well known to her for many years. Monica just exploded it to the public.)

As a feminist I cannot imagine a feminist (in other words, an independent woman with a strong sense of her own value and competence and right to be treated with dignity) deciding it was "best" to remain in that relationship. Of course, the psycho-drama of the Clinton relationship (on both personal and political levels) argues against her being an actual feminist.

Full circle. Her choice, her problem. He's not going to change and it doesn't appear that she is going to make him go away.

But we can.

I am always happy to read your take on things, Mr. Durst, you certainly have a way with words... I am fervently hoping that Hillary can muster enough grace to convince Obama that as a team, with her as V.P., they would be unbeatable.

Obama could bring even diehard Republicans to the table that way. They would be so grateful to deal w/him rather than her, and Ol' Coot McCain could ride off to Grumpy-ville with an attack of apoplexy.

Mr. Durst--

I always look forward to reading your articles. This one is an exception. You are entitled to your opinions and your humor is usually funny--but this time, not to me.

While you may think it is in Hillary's best interest to rein in her husband, many people in this country think he was pursued and persecuted by the "mad dog" republicans.

Please save your scathing wit for the Republicans because they will not go down without a fight no matter who runs the Democratic ticket.

I personally feel that Obama is "all flash and no photo"...he needs experience and you need to stay out it this time IMHO.

This is probably one of the funniest, most accurate posts I have ever read from Will Durst. Tell it like it is, my brother!

WildBill had the sense(?)today to get down & dirty on the rope line with a heckler. He even wagged that finger and got in the dude's face! Now THAT's classy!

Seriously, both Hillary and Bill's egos are so inflated that I don't believe either of them see or care what they are doing to each other, the Democratic party, or the nation.

Here's a funny cartoon and news post about this endearing couple and their adversary....

About that "Mr. President" thing...

Since 'ol Bill is "Mr. President Clinton"....

...then, of course, in the old style of address, Hillary is "Mrs. President Clinton". (or...'First Lady Clinton')

But, of course, she WON'T be, if she ends up squeaking it out...she'll be "Madame President Clinton"...

...at which time, Bill will become NOT "Mr. President", but "First Consort".

The PROPER introduction of the pair at a High State Function, would be "Madame President and First Consort Clinton".

But, of course, that won't go over very well. They'll have to figure out something different....

..."Madame President and Mr. Clinton"...

....naw. Sounds like a '70's TV show, or something you'd watch on BBC.

Today, it's quite common and most acceptable to refer to Laura Bush as "Mrs. George W. Bush". but we can't go there.

Problem is, the whole, "who's got rank" in the marital naming game is totally thrown off-whack by the whole "president" thing. President trumps Husband.

"Mr. Hillary Rodham-Clinton"...? has a certain ironic karma to it, to be sure...but there's an unresolved ambiguity there that won't fly. Can't be second-guessing our Commander-in-Chief's gender role.

What an INTRACTABLE problem!

RETIRE Bill, Take your loud mouth wife with you, and send
Chelsea to Iraq. She has been a bit to stuck up lately as well.

These days, you don't get to enjoy new people, new leaders, and a new future. You get to look at the same damn face that embarrassed the nation to tears over and over and over...and they still won't shut up.
