Election 2008

Obama Victory Brings "Racist Rats Out of the Woodwork"

By Hannah Strange, The Times of London UK. Posted November 18, 2008.

A disturbing wave of post-election hate crimes across the country shows that the cancer of American racism is far from cured.

Barack Obama's election as America's first black president has unleashed a wave of hate crimes across the nation, according to police and monitoring organizations.

Far from heralding a new age of tolerance, Obama's victory in the November 4th election has highlighted the stubborn racism that lingers within some elements of American society as opponents pour their frustration into vandalism, harassment, threats and even physical attacks.

Cross burnings, black figures hung from nooses, and schoolchildren chanting "Assassinate Obama" are just some of the incidents that have been documented by police from California to Maine.

There have been "hundreds" of cases since the election, many more than usual, said Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, which monitors hate crimes.

The phenomenon appears to be at its most intense in the Southern states, where opposition to Obama is at its highest and where reports of hate crimes were emerging even before the election. Incidents involving adults, college students and even schoolchildren have dampened the early post-election glow of racial progress and harmony, with some African American residents reporting an atmosphere of fear and inter-community tension.

In North Carolina, four students at the state university admitted writing anti-Obama comments in a tunnel designated for free speech expression, including one that said: "Let's shoot that (N-word) in the head." Obama has received more threats than any other president-elect, authorities say.

Marsha L. Houston, a University of Alabama professor, said a poster of the Obama family was ripped off her office door. A replacement poster was defaced with a death threat and a racial slur. "It seems the election brought the racist rats out of the woodwork," Houston said.

Second and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted "assassinate Obama," a district official said.

Meanwhile in Snellville, Georgia, Denene Millner, an African-American, said a boy on the school bus told her nine-year-old daughter the day after the election: "I hope Obama gets assassinated." That night, someone trashed her sister-in-law's front lawn, mangled the Obama lawn signs, and left two pizza boxes filled with human faeces outside the front door, Millner said.

She described her emotions as a combination of anger and fear.

"I can't say that every white person in Snellville is evil and anti-Obama and willing to desecrate my property because one or two idiots did it," Millner said. "But it definitely makes you look a little different at the people who you live with, and makes you wonder what they're capable of and what they're really thinking."

But the incidents have not been restricted to areas of high anti-Obama sentiment. Even states and cities which leaned heavily towards the Democrat have seen their share.

In New York, a black teenager said he was attacked with a bat on election night by four white men who shouted "Obama," while in the Pittsburgh suburb of Forest Hills, a black man said he found a note with a racial slur on his car windshield, saying "now that you voted for Obama, just watch out for your house."

In the northeastern state of Maine, customers at a general store in Standish were placing $1 bets on when the president-elect would be killed. A sign inside the Oak Hill General Store read: "Osama Obama Shotgun Pool." "Stabbing, shooting, roadside bombs, they all count," it said. At the bottom of the marker board was written "Let's hope someone wins."

This disgusts and saddens me a great deal.

"Second and third-grade students on a school bus in Rexburg, Idaho, chanted 'assassinate Obama,' a district official said."

Second and third graders.

What the fuck is wrong with people?

why Obama needs to talk to Avo Morales

Amy Goodman and Juan Gonzales interviewed the President of Bolivia today, and I find this man to be very inspiring. Although when asked he said he had no advice for President Elect Barack Obama, I believe that it would be very constructive for Obama to talk to him. He spoke of being called a "monkey" and a "poor little Indian" by the opposition, who had been the white, male ruling oligarchy there for two hundred years, until his brave rise to power. Now, he is proud of the women and other oppressed people who are gaining control of their governments in order not to lord over their oppressors, but to bring all people the rights and dignity that we all deserve as human beings. He was heading from New York to Washington to honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. at the Lincoln Memorial - what a symbol of hope and grace!

obama is the least qualified to lead this country but that doesn't excuse the racism.

Even the most backwards and retarded of you aren't breeding fast enough to reverse the slide in your numbers.

Then again, in about 35 years you'll be a minority, too. Then you'll be all like, "Affirmative action - f*ck yeah!"

#@!

...it will be scientifically discovered and documented that some contingent or perhaps all whites/Caucasians are genetically defective resulting in their being hyperviolent racists, and hopelessly insane, from birth. History certainly bears this out. It is not simply a function of their profound ignorance or deprivation, as most would argue. It is a gene or genes that will eventually be found and hopefully, by one means or another, eliminated from the human gene pool. If it is not, there will never be peace on earth and goodwill toward men.

Where The Hell Is The Secret Service?

Where is the FBI and the Secret Service and how come they're not arresting anyone for domestic terrorism, or at the very least, terroristic threats? Why isn't anyone being arrested for hate crimes?

I know a local lawyer who had her Obama sign removed (she has a black step dad), then someone poured red paint on it, rode over it several times with a vehicle and made certain the sign was placed in the road by the Muslim neighbors home...c

There is certainly ample proof in these comments that stupidity and racism is not restricted to any particular race!

Our new President is an African-American and he got the highest percentage of any Democratic President since LBJ. That says something. He would not be where he is without Americans of all races working to put him in the White House.

I am proud of Obama - proud of my country - proud of all us of every race who worked to elect him - and as disgusted as I always have been by ignorant Americans of all races who don't understand that it because of all of us we are great! "White Power" or "Black Power" is all B*** S***! American power is in every color.

I grew up in Maine, (Waterville) during the 1950s. A fairly large population of Syrian lived in WTVL. Many lived in what was known as the Front Street area. Some called the residents Front Street Niggers. Reading this story, many years way from living in Maine, I'm appalled. Shame on everybody!

"I'm no one special
But any part of town
Someone could smile at me
Shake my hand then gun me down...

"I know what I'm doing
I'm happy day to day
But then something happens
Takes my nerve away-" Joe Jackson, "Target"

So there you have it. It took a British journalist to aptly describe how some Americans REALLY feel about Obama becoming president. All over we saw reports of hate crimes committed by angry people who have taken out their sentiments on innocents and who want him killed. Well, folks, what would you say to to Obama's wife and children? What has he EVER DONE TO YOU PERSONALLY? Could you live with that on your mind? How would you feel if you knew they'd grow up without a father and unleash their vengence on YOU?
It's no secret that he has a big target on his back, and he knows it.
America, the whole world is watching us. Already Al-Qaida's second in command called Obama a "House Negro" but they are wrong; he was in the Senate. Oh well, hate and ignorance knows no color or boundary.
If something happens to Obama or his family we'll all be guilty and there will be no hoosegow large to keep you safe from reprisals. Think about it.

The Republicans should be ashamed of themselves for the extremes they went to during the campiagn. I see this as that legacy.

...isn't it long past time to penalize hate speech!

free speech doesn't include hate speech and the promotion of hatred in any form...

time to come into the 20th century and legislate an end to the spreading of hatred in this country!

yeah i know its the 21st century now...
but the rest of the free world already passed laws prohibiting hatred in the last millennium!
