Election 2008

Europe's Obamamania

By Ian Buruma, The Guardian. Posted November 5, 2008.

The president-elect is seen as something more than an American – he looks like a citizen of the world

Why do Europeans adore president-elect Obama? Stupid question, you might say. He is young, handsome, smart, inspiring, educated, cosmopolitan, and above all, he promises a radical change from the most unpopular American administration in history. Compare that to his rival, John McCain, who talked about change, but to most Europeans represented the opposite.
And yet, there is something odd about the European mania for a black American politician, even as we all know that a black president or prime minister (let alone one whose middle name is Hussein) is still unthinkable in Europe. Or perhaps that is precisely the point.

Europeans have long been hospitable to black American stars. Think of Josephine Baker, who wowed Parisians and Berliners at a time when blacks could not vote -- or even use the same bathrooms as whites -- in many parts of the United States. Cities like Paris, Copenhagen, and Amsterdam offered refuge to black American jazz musicians, who needed a break from institutionalised racism. The same was true for other artists. The writer, James Baldwin, for example, found a home in France.

Since there were very few black people in Europe, the adoration of black American stars came easily. It made Europeans feel superior to Americans. They could pat themselves on the back for their lack of racial prejudice. When large numbers of people from non-western countries started to come to Europe after the 1960s, this proved to be something of an illusion. Still, the illusion was nice while it lasted, and Obamamania may contain an element of nostalgia, as well as hope.

The other reason for the European love affair with Obama is that he is seen as something more than an American. Unlike McCain, the all-American war hero, Obama looks like a citizen of the world. With his Kenyan father, he carries the glamour once associated with Third World liberation movements. Nelson Mandela inherited that glamour; indeed, he personified it. Some of that has rubbed off on Obama, too.

This did not help him much at home. Indeed, it could easily have hurt him. Republican populists have long tried to depict their Democratic opponents, often with great success, as "un-American" elitists, intellectuals, and the kind of guys who speak French -- in short, "Europeans".

When Obama made his rousing speech at the Berlin Tiergarten in July in front of 200,000 cheering Germans, his popularity ratings at home actually fell, especially in the old industrial rustbelt of Ohio and Pennsylvania. He came dangerously close to looking too "European". But the real Europeans loved him for it.

But the main reason for Obamamania may be more complex. It has become popular of late for European pundits and commentators to write the US off as a great power, let alone an inspirational one. In this, they have more or less followed public opinion.

Many liberal-minded people expressed, often sorrowfully, their deep disillusion with America during the dark Bush years. The nation they had grown up looking up to, as a beacon of hope -- a place that, while flawed, still inspired dreams of a better future and produced great movies, soaring buildings, rock'n'roll, John Kennedy, and Martin Luther King -- had been hopelessly tainted by reckless wars, officially sanctioned torture, coarse chauvinism, and extraordinary political arrogance.

Others expressed the same disillusion with a gloating air of schadenfreude. At last, that big, arrogant, fatally seductive nation, which left the Old World in its shade for so long, had been brought to its knees. Watching the economic rise of China, Russia, and India, and the American debacles in the Middle East, it was tempting to believe that US power really did not count for very much anymore. A multi-polar world, many thought, would be vastly preferable to more Pax Americana.

Yet such projections could never entirely disguise a nagging anxiety. How many Europeans (or Asians, for that matter) would really be happier being subjected to the superior power of China or Russia? Under all the confident-sounding dismissals of US power, there is still some yearning to return to a more reassuring time, when the democratic world could lay its collective head on Uncle Sam's broad shoulders.

This, too, is probably an illusion. Too much has changed since the Marshall Plan, the Berlin airlift, and the Cuban missile crisis. But I do not believe that the American dream has died in Europe quite yet. Obamamania seems to have revived it.

Obama's election has demonstrated that things are still achievable in the US that remain unthinkable elsewhere. As long as this is so, the US, as first among equals, can still be looked up to as the defender of our freedoms.

Europeans -- and others -- may regard China's rise with awe, and hope to find a modus vivendi with Russia, but without the hopes inspired by that extraordinary republic, which represents the worst and the best of our battered western world, we would all be much worse off. In their hearts, most Europeans know this. That is why they are going crazy over Barack Obama's election.

When I listened to Obama's speech, I felt I was back in the 60's. Many have wondered over the last decades where the idealists had gone. It has taken a generation for the tired Grumpy Old White Men to burn themselves and their antiquated ideology out (and they almost took everybody down with them). The GOWM, whose collective generational framework had them stuck in the WWII and post-war cold war, spy versus spy, all-for-us and nothing-for-them fear based mentality. These are bitter people stuck in a fear-filled past, unable to appreciate the present and to plan properly for the future. Good riddance!

Simply awe inspiring that you would have the gall to utter such words as “battered western world” in a time when the western world is slaughtering people daily in multiple parts of the world. Last night Americans murdered yet more wedding goers in Afghanistan yet you feel you have room to lament and wring your hands over your “battered” world!

. . . their deep disillusion with America during the dark Bush years. The nation they had grown up looking up to, as a beacon of hope -- a place that, while flawed, still inspired dreams of a better future and produced great movies, soaring buildings, rock'n'roll, John Kennedy, and Martin Luther King -- had been hopelessly tainted by reckless wars, officially sanctioned torture, coarse chauvinism, and extraordinary political arrogance."

Interesting points and duly noted. However, I wonder when America will be able to look to Europe as a source of inspiration? We love to romantacize continental Europe and its people, but is that unquestioning respect totally warranted?

Europeans are widely regarded as more sophisticated and cultured simply by virtue of their enduring legacy of artistic and scientific achievement, and while that is a somewhat reasonable standard by which to judge a people, it belies the fact that Europe, from Russia to Scotland, is rife with racist parties that do surprisingly well in local and national elections. I have lived in both Belgium and the Czech Republic, and on several occasions, I witnessed hundreds of thousands of people come out in force to express their hatred towards people of North African/Middle Eastern descent.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure why Europe has been given a pass for fomenting two world wars responsible for tens of millions of deaths. One spawned a genocidal rampage, and the other saw the introduction of chemical weapons. Quite a legacy in and of itself.

One final point. Do you think we'll see a Turkish Chanellor in Germany anytime soon? How about a female president for France? How about anyone but a white male? Their only hope of this, Royal, was snubbed for neocon-lite Sarkozy. How very enlightened. How about Russia? Anyone betting on an ethnic Albanian as Prime Minister in their future? And Italy or Greece. Black presidents in their futures? I doubt it.

The point is, Europeans may now be forced to turn in on themselves and ask some difficult questions. Assuming Obama ends our arrogant, bellicose ways, Europeans will find it increasingly difficult to continue embracing their own racist, sexist legacy.

I'm not sure where you come up with that. Just as McCain was criticized for never using the words "middle class", Obama was criticized for never much using or emphasizing the word "freedom".

If they live up to their claim of cutting the pentagon budget by 25%, I'd guess a big chunk of that is going to come from closing many of the bases we've got scattered all over the globe. Presumably some of those will be in Europe, so I hope y`all are ready to defend your own freedoms without so much help from us.

In other words, it's the kind of change we can make believe in...

Remmeber when israel had bombed Iraques nuclear reactor in summer of 1981 days befor it going critical then it was the english media and their stooge english media who wre doing anti israeli propaganda along with Iraq-ofcourse at that time english thought that the only way to get ARAB MONEY WAS BY LICKING ARAB'S ARSE.- when america is kicking that arse then english like a hyena-that they are-have joined them. In fact english are actively sabotaging and spying european trade secrets-english are enemies not only of coloured population of the world but all other whites of Europe and of even america-english infiltration inside america has ensured that america foreign policy and even domestic policy is run for english benefit and small number of anglosaxonx(who are basically plumber class in america just like in england)-english is a race of pirates turned blumbers)That is why english have infiltrated media and hollywpood and are boring the rest of the world with their rubbish actors and actreess-who are more of whores than anything-that too ugly english whore. That is why though england does not produce anything worthwhile-may be infected beef?-it is still not under recession while japan .far east and whiole of europe has been made to live in prolonged recession by the english manipulation of stock market world bank and all unproductive financial transations.

The French prseident is right is demanding that britain give back to E. U. what it has been taking
unfairly for so long. After all it was never entitled to those money . Besides it has n=been britain who has been vociferous in wanting the enlargement of europe. The prupose why england wanted enlargement was basically to derail european integration and create a rift amonst partner states so that wiht the hepl of america braitain can As a pet dog of super=power(but never a power in itself though
propaganda would be about engand being some sort of power) this rubbish thirld rate country would terrorize and hopefully rule_as american proxy over other countries outside europe. In opther word england is harbouring an ambition of proxy empire(with american help_If it could do on its own then it owuld not have cared for america). tHAT ABITION OF enGLAND MUST BE CRUSHED.
eUROPE SHOULD DEMAND NOT ONLY MONEY BACK ABUT IF POSSIBLE SHOULD KICK ENGLAND OUT OF E.U.
eNGLAND IS ENNEMY OF NOT ONLY EUROPE BUT ALOS THE ALL OF THIRLD WORLD AND EVEN AMEIRCA. LOOK HOW RUBBISH ENGLISH PLUMBERS AND FOOTBALERSLAND UP SUSHY JOB IN HOLLYWOOD WHILE THE REST OF WORLD HAS TO GET VISA TO ENTER AMERICA AND WHILE MOST OF AMERICANS(WHO ARE NOT DESCENENDETS OF ANGLOSAXONS) HAVE TO FACE DISCRIMINATION.).

tHE SOONER THE WORLD REALIZE THIS AXIS OF EVIL(ENGLAND AND ANGLOSAXONS RACE) THAT SOONER IT CAN THWART THE EVIL DESIGN OF THIS ENGLISH-PIRATE TURNED SHOPKEEPRES TURNES PLUMBERS RACE).

Quandiu stabit coliseus, stabit et Roma; quando cadit coliseus, cadet et Roma; quando cadet Roma, cadet et mundus ("as long as the Colossus stands, so shall Rome; when the Colossus falls, Rome shall fall; when Rome falls, so falls the world").

“Many liberal-minded people expressed, often sorrowfully, their deep disillusion with America during the dark Bush years. The nation they had grown up looking up to, as a beacon of hope -- a place that, while flawed, still inspired dreams of a better future and produced great movies, soaring buildings, rock'n'roll, John Kennedy, and Martin Luther King -- had been hopelessly tainted by reckless wars, officially sanctioned torture, coarse chauvinism, and extraordinary political arrogance.”

Rome was indeed a beacon of its world. The US was, and can be now again, serve as that beacon for its world. Many of us hope there will be real change that puts the emphasis on those who have been the victims of the Dark Ages of the Bush years. This man saw the country and the world as a toy, something that he could do with whatever he wanted. He will go down as the dumbest fool to ever hold the Presidency.

With new leadership let’s hope the emphasis will be on the society as a whole, not just Corporate America and the Wall Street crowd, whose excesses, along with the aid of the fool in the White House and his henchman Cheney, the power behind the throne aka the AntiChrist, almost brought utter ruin to this nation.

They behaved as if it was their election, and their victory - it was the talk of the town. Of course they would be thrilled to vote in someone of his stature; being half-white would not be an issue.

Who could have forseen Nelson Mandela's rise to Power in South Africa? Anything can happen if it is the right person for the job.
