Election 2008

The Obama Administration: Who Could Get Picked?

By Sam Stein, Huffington Post. Posted November 5, 2008.

In recent days an outline of an Obama administration has begun to emerge -- both in the rumor mill and in press reports.

Even before voting began, Washington was abuzz over what a Democratic White House might resemble.

In recent days an outline of an Obama administration has begun to emerge -- both in the rumor mill and in press reports. The campaign itself has specifically and repeatedly denied any efforts as such. But sources confirm that advisers to the Senator are already plotting out the staffing of key cabinet positions. And the picture presented is one of experience, talent and bipartisanship.

Chief of Staff

The key figure here is Rahm Emanuel, who is already rumored to be the front man for the job. The Associated Press has reported that the Obama transition team is making overtures to the Illinois congressman, reports which both sides have played down. People in the know, meanwhile, are saying the likelihood is Rahm will be offered the post and will likely say yes - he has experience in the White House, connections and respect on Capitol Hill, and the combative, competitive demeanor that might be an asset for the post.

If for some unforeseen reason Emanuel doesn't work out (sources say he's that much of a lock), the other names being bantered around are John Podesta, the current topper of the Center for American Progress and former chief of staff for Bill Clinton, and Tom Daschle, who has served as a key Obama adviser throughout the campaign and is formerly the Senate Majority Leader.

Attorney General

Janet Napolitano seems in line for this key-ranking position, which became a controversial post under the stewardship of Alberto Gonzales. The current Governor of Arizona is close with Obama, having endorsed his candidacy early on. And sources say that she wouldn't mind the move to D.C. What may end up deciding the appointment, however, is that Eric Holder - who served briefly as AG under Bill Clinton and headed Obama's vice presidential search committee - doesn't want to go through the rigors of a confirmation process and could take himself out of the running.

Secretary of State

This could be the big surprise. Sen. Dick Lugar, a Republican from Indiana may be, according to high-ranking Democrats, Obama's man for the job. The two have worked closely on several issues, none more so than securing loose nukes in former Soviet nations. But Democrats may not warm to the idea of an opposition party member getting an important foreign policy post (a complex to which liberals in particular are tired of being subjected). In light of that, Obama could consider -- and is rumored to be thinking about -- Sen. John Kerry, former U.N. Ambassador Dick Holbrooke, current foreign policy adviser Susan Rice and Greg Craig, another top Obama foreign policy adviser. Among cabinet positions, this seems to be one of the most wide open.

Treasury Secretary

For, perhaps, this most important position, Obama has a slew of options. The individual that sources say is rising closest to the top is former Federal Reserve chairman Paul Volcker, who has been a key endorser of the Obama candidacy in these tough economic times. At the same time, Obama could turn to Warren Buffet, though there is little indication that the Oracle of Omaha wants the job. Or he could look outside the box and tap Michael Bloomberg, though the New York City mayor is seeking a third term in office.

Defense Secretary

The consensus is emerging that, at least for the time being, Obama will keep current header Robert Gates in the cabinet. The job extension would provide the Illinois Democrat the cover he needs to reverse course in Iraq without risking charges of overt partisanship on the issue. Here too, however, there are a host of different names from which Obama can choose his own appointee. These include Republicans such as Sens. Chuck Hagel and Lugar, as well as Democrats like Sen. Jack Reed - a strong congressional voice on foreign policy - Holbrooke and Richard Danzig, former Secretary of the Navy and another key Obama endorser/adviser.

All of this, of course, is speculation. And the list above excludes a bevy of names that have been rumored to be in the running for respective positions. But, from conversations with Washington insiders and in-the-know Democrats, it seems clear that the process of dwindling down the long lists of potential cabinet members has already begun. And the names emerging represent the type of politics that Obama has preached: competent, non-rigid, and above partisanship.

Secretary of Agriculture

No one is better suited to be Secretary of Agriculture than Ken Meter, president of Crossroads Resource Center in Minneapolis. With more than 30 years experience working in community self-determination efforts, he has a deep and informed knowledge of the issues and challenges in our agriculture system.
Secretary of Agriculture might not be the sexiest of roles, but it's of vital importance for all of us, and Ken Meter has the experience, intelligence and sense of the Big Picture that can help this country make a transition from AgriBusiness, with its terrible economic, social and environmental tolls, to sustainable, regional food systems.

I suggest Prez Obama should appoint every Marxist and fringe element groups friendly to the Dems to office. This ought to rile every paranoid, foaming-at-the-mouth Reich-winger for years to come. What's more, it's likely those appointees will be what Repug appointess never were: QUALIFIED FOR THE JOB!!!!

Sigh! Can I take back my vote and switch to McCain and Palin. I also take back every nice thing I said about Obama. If this is Obama's idea of the kind of people he wants to surround his administration, we are going to deeply, deeply regret 2008 elections, perhaps not wish for the good ol' days of the Bush administration, but just about that.

Pretty much everything related to corporate control of the regulatory and trade policies of the U.S. government... Note that under the Bush Administration, there was some scandal involved in just about every one of these branches.

Secretary of Interior. Home of the Minerals Management Service, busted for cocaine- and prostitution-influenced contracting processes.

Secretary of Energy. Home of "clean coal" propaganda efforts and nuclear weapons contracting. Gives lip service to "clean energy" by which they mean nuclear and coal.

Secretary of Agriculture. Works closely with trade and commerce to open foreign markets in Asia and Africa and Central America to U.S. exports.

Here are the rest. You'll get a much better idea of what Obama's policies will really be by looking at his choice of appointments to these posts, then you will by listening to any speech:

Secretary of Commerce.

Chairman of Federal Reserve.

Secretary of Housing and Human Development

Secretary of Homeland Security

Secretary of Health and Human Services (FDA)

EPA Administrator

Secretary of Labor

Secretary of Education

Secretary of Veteran's Affairs

National Intelligence Director

US Trade Representative

Director of National Drug Policy

Office of Management and Budget

For example, this was a record year for U.S. oversees weapons sales. Will that continue under an Obama Administration? Will our foreign policy continue to rotate around efforts to gain access to oil reserves? Will we see more undemocratic trade agreements like NAFTA? Will Obama pursue a NAFTA with Colombia, say? Will the FDA head be an ex-pharmaceutical CEO? (Buffet has huge investments in fossil fuels, both coal and oil, by the way - his appointment as head of Treasury would be a sure sign of the continuation of the status quo.)

Nobody knows much about any of this, because our godawful media didn't cover the core issues very well during this election. Everyone knows about Bill Ayers, but no one has any idea who Obama will pick as Secretary of Energy. If he picks a corporate insider linked to the fossil fuel or nuclear industry, then that will mean one thing. If he doesn't - say he picks the head of the National Renewable Energy Laboratory instead - then that will mean something else.

Wait and see...

Was Alan Greenspan too liberal? I consuder Paul Vocker to be one of the prime architects of the destruction of the new deal version of the democratic party.

Seriously, ew. And Emahnuel is even worse. And LUGAR? Again, was Pat Buchanan too liberal?

I really was hoping to enjoy this for a few days. But in all seriousness, it's up to US to make sure this doesn't happen.

WE HAVE TO MAKE SURE THERE ARE PROGRESSIVE VOICES IN THIS ADMINISTRATION!!

It's up to us! We got him elected after all.

How About A Protector of Our Environmental Life Support System?

What is more important than protecting the resources on which we depend, and saving us from poisons that destroy our health?

My pick for head of the EPA: Lincoln Chafee, the former moderate Republican Senator from my own state of RI. He is a statesman, intelligent, principled, honest, brave, and a passionate environmentalist, as was his father, Sen. John Chafee, before him.

Linc only lost his race to Sheldon Whitehouse (who has turned out to be another excellent legislator, by the way)because people in RI wanted so much to have a Democratic Congress.
Chafee is still a highly respected individual - and deserves it.

Return of Bipartisanship
Posted by: JakobFabian01 on Nov 5, 2008 6:50 AM
Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
When the Republicans rule, you get mono-partisan government. To the Republicans, "bipartisanship" means that the Democrats can either vote along with them or sit there and lose. "My way or the highway" -- remember that slogan?

When the Democrats rule, you get bipartisan government. To the Democrats, bipartisanship means triangulation, that is, choosing the midpoint between the Republican position, no matter how insane, and the position of the Democratic Party's ideological base. This tradition, for better or for worse, accounts for Obama's unimpressive cabinet picks.

Two cheers for the return of two-party government!

But as several commenters have already said, real change is up to us. Let me suggest that part of our strategy should be proportional representation. Change the electoral system so that we can use instant-runoff voting and empower Greens and Libertarians to challenge the duopoly effectively. Then we'll have what most European countries have -- multi-party government and the possibility that in the future, mere bipartisanship will mean something other than gridlock -- what about a Dem-Green coalition?

In the longer term, I'd favor Constitutional reform to reduce the monarchical power of the Presidential veto and to give us a unicameral Congress -- one that represents populations, not land masses, as the House of Representatives does.

These are the structural reforms that we need. However we may curse and gnash our teeth at Democratic "cowardice," we have to realize that this is a structural as well as ideological problem.

Obama's victory (his victory over Hillary Clinton as well as that over McCain) is a sign that progressives have finally begun to loosen the ideological straitjacket of plutocracy that has heretofore held both of our major parties -- even though much more has to be done. Now, we should think about moving on to reform the plutocratic structure of our government. Obama's cautious centrism, like that of the Clintons before him, should be a reminder of the work that we have to do.

Looks pretty much the same from here. We should begin now to bring this crap down not working to re-inforce the corrupt. Stop co-operating with the status quo under a new "brand" or a simple re-packaging.

The Chinese (I think) said that one should be careful of what one asks for - one might get exactly that.

Clark was valedictorian of his class at West Point, was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to the University of Oxford where he obtained a degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics, and later graduated from the Command and General Staff College with a master's degree in military science.

Sounds like a great NSC or DOD chief to me.

Our Country grows under Progressive ideals. I hope that President Elect Obama chooses people, who are Progressive. We are passed the time of Centrist Clinton and Conservative Republican who think the old policies will work.

Bob Gates had a role in illegal wiretapping, when he was in Reagan's white house. I do not see that he has a place in any open Government. Chuck Hagel has been more of a maverick than those who laid claim to the title. I'd like to see Naomi Klein and Antonia Juhacz in his cabinet. There are excellent people from Progressive think tanks that would do great jobs. We do not need to stick with AEI, Heritage, Cato, Brookings, etc. There policies didn't work. It's time for a true new world. President Roosevelts (Teddy and FDR) were Progressive. They did not use Hoover and McKinley's policies. They did not use their people.

President Bush put in so many mid level people on their ideology not their skills, that President Obama will have to take out and replace with skilled and thinking people. I can't wait to see who he puts in Agriculture (who is not pro Agri business but pro farmer), Energy, Interior. Our world is changing from the outside with Global Warming. We have such an opportunity!!!! I hope he puts the solar panels back on the White House that Jimmy Carter had on the White House, that Ronald Reagan took off.

I sincerely believe Howard Dean, Axelrod, and Plouffe all deserve a place in the Obama organization - their strategizing and thinking brought it home.

I fervently hope all the ex- Clinton people are not going to comprise the new administration, which would be a real slap in the face. Here are some thoughts:

A Secretary of the Interior who actually cares about the environment and sustainable living, saving our Old Growth forests and Redwoods.
(Barbara Boxer?)
A Surgeon-General/Healthcare official who respects women's rights. opposes slaughterhouse cruelty to animals, etc. (Andrew Weil?)

The following should be considered:
Wesley Clark (Secretary of Defense?)
Dennis Kucinich (Secretary of the Interior)
Jim Webb
Chuck Hagel
Russ Feingold
Hillary Clinton (Attorney General?)

Any thoughts?

So, I wonder who's going to be whispering in Obama's ear when Iran decides to go full speed ahead with that nucular weapons program? What do you think he'll be whispering? Sweet nothings?

Last night while I was watching MSNBC's coverage of the election results with a friend, I thought I heard one of the talking heads---can't remember if it was the blond guy, Chris Matthews, or David Gregory, I know I wasn't Keith Olbermann---say Obama can't fill his administration with Clinton/Carter retreads.

So here, Sam Stein, you start with speculating on which worn-out retreads, hacks and has-beens president-elect Obama should populate his cabinet with.

I mean, really now, if Obama's win represents a change, let it start with his cabinet picks.

but beware of clinton team in obama especially goldman sachs sons

the british agents working through goldman sachs woudl try to entice obama to their agenda of endless war and rapid exploitatvie capitalism for the benefit of anglosaxon pirate class otherwise called capitalists.

When Clinton was elected in 1992 BC was saying that it was worrisome for the british foreing office because Clinton might want peaceful settlement in Ireland. No worry. Within 3 weeks of Clinton eelction the british bastards brought him into their grip.. But the same B and british were very happy when in 1994 and 1996 this Clinton lost congress to conservative majority-proof that british friendship was only to neautralize Clinton from straying from so called neutral attitude to uk.

In fact in the 1988 American election B.B.C. had invited the chief drug dealer of BAT-i.e. british american tobacco-(who of course is an englishman) and there was another American there. During discussion of Ducassis' candidature the B.B.C. anchor man suggested to the American that the opponent of bush was hardly an American as he looked to dark and was Greek, the country of geek being too much near Africa. It really happened. This shows a few things. According to B.B.C. not only Blacks were not American but also all those who the english agents have labelled ethnic Americans. In fact B.B.C. openly said (in that program-usually B.B.C. does not reveal its evil intention so easily) that the American means actually anglo-saxons. The whole propaganda and racial slur was provided by BBC.
the way George H.W. Bush finished off Michael Dukakis in 1988. Lee Atwater, Bush’s smear manager, picked up Al Gore’s use of Horton – the black rapist furloughed for a weekend, under a law passed by Gov. Dukakis – and retooled it, throwing in slurs about Dukakis as being some foreign outsider
Don't confuse that white includes Germans either. The same English agents (in America) who created a monstrous film like ``birth of nation`` are the same people who crated prohibition only because many German immigrants were drinking bear and they did not like it. It is the same england sympathiser crowd who went on killing blacks, Irish,
etc -
now how come about that every President who wanted to take stand indendent of Britain in America on Domestic or Foreign has eithr been made impotent or killed(Abraham Lincoln, Kennedy,Robert Kennedy)? To understand that one has to remember British propaganda machinary(all sorts of media,BBB.,Papars, govt, etc) and britihs agents in America.Britain has always acted like a heyena(or dog) who let two or Three Lions(OF Europe like France, Germans

The "center" is an abstraction - it doesn't exist.

Pelosi is a coward who wants to minimize her own concept of risk. This conforms to her utter lack of leadership skills and complete lack of vision coming from a gross lack of understanding of the issues.

If Obama falls into this trap as well then we all lose big time - our chance to grab the brass ring of change will be lost forever.

Obama MUST show daring and vision in his selections - he MUST pick academics at the forefront of their field, as JFK did, new blood who project a sense of confidence and willingness to change.

How can a leader project leadership and vision by making dull, frightened, uninspired appointments?? It defies common sense.

The worst thing Obama could do is go Pelosi on us and become a walking zombie, one of the un-dead.

peace,
Paul

Dennis Kucinich for Health and Human Services and Berney Sanders for Dept. of Treasury.
Then I'd make darn sure to get someone for Dept. of Defense who DOESN'T think it's a GOOD idea to sell NUKES to every other country on earth, and who thinks it's BETTER to PROTECT this country than to INVADE other countries for oil or any other reason.

. . . one must QUESTION why anyone would spend time suggesting to President-elect Obama who he should put in his cabinet, and other high offices? Don't think for a minute that he hasn't put that list into the plan well ahead of 11/4. He needs time to rest, be with his family, and see if he can still feel his pulse. That was one helluva grueling campaign, and launching a new program is not done overnight--it takes months of planning - be fair to him, eh - it only serves us in the final outcome. Just let him know we are here, ready to serve!

Go outdoors, and enjoy life - if you can stay awake - we're all suffering withdrawal symptoms, right now. This campaign has made a lot of us refined researchers and politicos, just to keep sane, and we need a 12-Step Program to recover from the abuse of these past months. It'll be hard enough to let-go, but lets-do, to be ready to volunteer in our own communities when we need to step up to help Obama.

I can't even add any posts to my blog!

Sorry but I only wanted to stop by, but had to open my mouth one more time. Night all!

We really need to stay vigilante on these picks. I'm not sure that getting involved in the speculation game helps progressives much, but scrutinizing picks and applying pressure once they are made seems like an important strategy. Unfortunately, there has been little said about Obama's transition team--which might be an indication of how he is planning to pick. I've been looking into it and it doesn't feel very good to me:
