Election 2008

As an Obama Victory Seems Increasingly Likely, Conservatives Are Getting Panicky and Unhinged

By Harry Hanbury and Patricia Foulkrod, American News Project. Posted November 3, 2008.

A snapshot of the freaked-out views and conspiracy theory fears of supporters at a John McCain rally in Columbus, Ohio.
Upcoming AlterNet stories on Digg

At a recent rally for John McCain in Columbus, Ohio, ANP asked McCain supporters a simple question: If Barack Obama is elected president, what will it say about America? One woman, who claims that Obama wants to change the flag and the national anthem, demonstrates the lasting power of a debunked anti-Obama chain e-mail.

Isn't it surreal to hear people talk about what they are afraid will happen if Barack Obama is elected, and the things they are afraid of have already happened as a result of the conservative agenda that has been carried out by Republicans for the past 25+ years. If there are any characteristics these people have in common, they are ignorance and fear. They are truly "know nothings".

It's sad how much this past election has been about fear. The Republicans and the McCain-Palin ticket have certainly drummed up the fears of conservative voters: they've spread complete lies, used their deepest fears against Obama and are pushing negativity.

I would also say that liberal voters are equally afraid of a McCain-Palin ticket for similar reasons that conservatives are afraid of Obama-Biden: libs also fear they will also take rights away from Americans.

But, I think the biggest difference is that liberals are afraid of the actual policies and past performances of McCain and Palin, and conservatives are afraid of half-truths and lies of who Obama is.

Most of the people recorded are uninformed. They hear a few speeches or read some emails that spread lies and take them at face value.

They don't investigate for themselves what the truth is.

For example, the one guy who filed bankruptcy seems to be oblivious to the fact that McCain pushed for deregulation of the finance market leading to the big collapse in the real estate market (due to bad loans).

The rich kids seems to at least be aware of the tax proposals, but only has short term vision. Even if he works for his parents and pulls in a big salary, how rich will his family stay if the US enters a deep recession? Who will buy his family's goods, services, or stock then?

What you see on this film is as much America as films of Obama rallies. And apart from the rabid pro-life lady and the one who believes the silly stuff about the anthem and the flag, I didn't see many freaked out views and conspiracy theories. I saw people who have conservative views and don't accept the arguments against their viewpoint. People who don't believe Obama shares their values and have concerns about his ability to lead them to a place they want to go.

I hope he and his people are listening to these voices, because they represent a substantial portion of the citizens of the United States that he's most likely going to be leading come January.

Most of these people seem prejudiced, or misinformed, or fearful, or all of the above. They fear that their wages will be taken away, their rights, their symbols (the flag, the national anthem), their guns, etc. When you don't have a lot to begin with, and your inner life is impoverished, you are prone to fear.

And sadly the McCain-Palin campaign has played to these fears.

Country first? I think not. Fear first might be a more appropriate slogan.

I Love The Family Values Argument

The crazy woman screaming in the beginning won't vote for Obama because he has no family values; as opposed to McCain the adulterer, who left a disabled wife and married his mistress a month later. I guess this fits with the cries of elitism even though their candidate wears $500.00 shoes, owns 7 houses, his wife wears a $300,000 pendant to events, and his campaign spent $150,000 on his running mate's wardrobe. I would have to believe these people have an IQ of about 20, which classifies them as imbeciles, you can't blame them for not understanding how they are being used.

problem with these so-called "conservative" voters. They think they'll be rich ala Donald Trump, self-righteous "moralists" ala James Dobson and Rush Limbaugh, or even dream of being "war heros" ala John McTRAITOR. But let's face it, even worse than Obama, these rightwing icons are even more elitist than those they claim are elitist. I'm pretty sure that even in Ohio, there are plenty of moderates and even reasonable independents who will counter the die-hard rightwingers who are self-righteous and deluded thinking they'll fly like Peter Pan ! Well? 28 years of "conservative" ruling hasn't made most of these people any better off and even those who made it through were able to squeak by with what little liberal and/or moderate independent policies made it through their local and even state governments no thanks to selling out on the federal level. Obama/Biden are doing what they can to get their foot soldiers to counter these foam-at-the-mouth deluded "conservatives". Hang in there.

These people weren't loons.

They looked more like regular folks than the usual suspects you see mouthing this kind of stuff. They were dressed nicely, and were pretty well-spoken. They looked, for the most part, pretty well-heeled, too.

Some of them are gullible and have fallen for the lowest-common-denominator party line, but what I heard for the most part, whether it was about abortion or taxes, was, "Hooray for me, fuck you!" That's pretty sad, but it's always been the unofficial motto of the Bush Administration. I hear it's the watermark on White House stationery now.

This way of thinking exists right now only in a small segment of the population. The numbers say that the Republican "base", the sort of person we see here that Palin was hired to mobilize, makes up only about 25% of Republican voters right now, and an even smaller portion of the general population. Look at the video. Where are the crowds? Where are the people three-deep clamoring for that angry guy's t-shirts?

Sure, there's a large segment of the American population of voting age that doesn't know a damned thing and doesn't want to know, and lives via tv sitcoms and the sports page. They've probably never voted, and aren't planning to start tomorrow. Before now, the record voter turnout for this country was 63.1% in 1960. Tomorrow we should break that record. Between 1960 and now, the highest turnout for people of voting age in a Presidential election was 55.3% in 2004. See for yourself.

There have always been extremists on both sides. And there have always been the indifferent.

The pendulum is about to swing, and the days of hooray for the powerful, the days of religiosity masquerading as government, the days of unenlightened self-interest going unchallenged, the days of Rush, Billo, Hannity and the rest of the smug schmucks will soon be over.

Stupid people, unfortunately, will always be with us.

Panicky and unhinged? Maybe temporarily. But I have no doubt that they are planning the next move. The conservatives are out to destroy Obama, and they honed to a fine art how to do it during the Clinton years. O'Reilly, Limbaugh, Hannity, et al are going to keep up their propaganda. And I am sure that there have already been secret meetings to discuss how to discredit Obama in the months and years ahead. I am sure there is some Lee Atwater type who is right now doing "long term planning" to destroy and/or derail any true reform in this country.

Actually McCain betrayed America while he was a POW. Probably why he was reluctant to leave the Hanoi Hilton when it was offered. He gave the North Vietnamese infomation on flight patterns we used and targets we were going to hit. After he gave them this information more of our pilots were shot down. Most POW's were promoted while in captivity, he was never promoted. He made thirty-two films for the North Vietnamese, his code name was songbird. His POW records are sealed we can't see them. See my posts if you'd like to see the video's.

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
their ignorance makes me want to spew myself.

Sigh...

I think one of the root problems in this country is misinformation. Where are these people getting their "facts?"

The things they say they are afraid of are much more likely to happen (or have already happened) with continued Republican rule.

Obama wants to change the national anthem? This is just all so much horse hooey it drives me nuts.

I prefer to deal in reality, but most people today do not seem to be able to distinguish what reality even is. Of course, they would say the same thing about me. They think they have the facts. Yup, Obama is a Muslim terrorist Robin Hood who wants to destroy America.

If America had a decent news media, I think much of the polarisation would disappear because there would not be so much wild propaganda pulling people into the bizzarro world.

People are confused and ignorant. Makes me want to lock my door and just stay home where there is some semblance of sanity.

All this B.S. inspired me to make a crazy You Tube video poking fun at the whole mess. Click the link below.

I think it is highly presumptuous to assume an Obama victory. Obama himself has made the mistake of bringing up new subjects--like the civilian security force--just days before the election; he should have stuck to the script. It's still up in the air. Forget the polls--what are the people themselves going to do tomorrow? And if the tide seems to be turning against the Republicans, do you think for a moment they're going to just panic and wring their hands? Rather, they will be pulling out the stops to challenge votes and voters, make sure there is no paper trail for their electronic voting machines, and any number of other schemes to keep political power in the hands of the "white" male.

This morning on NPR, there was a report of interviews with people in a small town of 700 in Texas. One man, a Republican, said he had investigated Obama because he considered voting for him. But the reason he chose to stay with McCain was that he was afraid of how much Obama would spend as president!!!!!

Obviously this guy has had his head in the sand (or some other equally dark place) for the past eight years. The Bush Administration has been notorious for its drunken sailor spending sprees, earmarks, and ballooning deficits.

It seems that this election cycle has seen some of the most informed citizens I've ever encountered, but it has also brought out some of the most ignorant, too. People are talking politics in grocery lines, in waiting rooms, at parties, and in their homes as never before in my lifetime (I'm 61). One of my friends, a relatively uneducated working class guy who grew up in the most rural, poor conditions one can imagine (no indoor toilet, having to hunt and eat from the garden to survive - as opposed to doing it because the family wanted to), went on at great length yesterday about why he thinks Obama would be a good president and why McCain would be terrible. He was right-on about all of it. This person, who grew up thinking the "N" word was just the term used to describe blacks, has absolutely no problem with Obama's race. It's just not an issue for him.

And then there are the people I overheard saying they didn't like any of the candidates until Palin was on the ticket, and still think Obama is a Communist or a Muslim. Or both. From their conversation, it was obvious they had no idea whatsoever about what "Communist" means.

These days, there are a lot more rural working class people who are astute and informed, probably at least partly due to the Internet and the easy access to information. But at the same time we still have far too many Palin-Joe-the-Plumber supporters who don't have a clue.

It's inconceivable that these ignorant people could believe the outright lies that McBush and the Wicked Witch of the North tell over and over. They should all have the longest noses in the world.

One would think that they could see the state of the country and the world as a result of the Bush crime family's rule as despots. They have shredded the Constitution; they have portrayed themselves as Christians when Jesus would really be pissed if he could see what they are doing; they have made war where there was no reason to make war, not that there is ever a real reason to make war since we have brains and should use diplomacy instead of force where there is a problem.

But to see those two brainless idiots spew their venom on the poor ignorant people in this country is hateful. It is all part of the Republican plot over the past decades to dumb down the people to the point where they can be manipulated to respond in this manner. It's infuriating and sad at once. But it's time for those of who realize what has happened to try to spread the word that McCain is not a good guy and never has been a good guy and certainly Palin is not a good woman. She has plans of her own as to the future. Lets just hope that, as it always happens, when they lose the election, she will never be heard of again and those men who were so taken by her will be chastened and learn from this.

What if the Obamas had paraded five children across the stage, including a three month old infant and an unwed, pregnant teenage daughter?
What if John McCain was a former president of the Harvard Law Review? What if Barack Obama finished fifth from the bottom of his graduating class?

What if McCain had only married once, and Obama was a divorcee? What if Obama was the candidate who left his first wife after a severe disfiguring car accident, when she no longer measured up to his standards? What if Obama had met his second wife in a bar and had a long affair while he was still married?

What if Michelle Obama was the wife who not only became addicted to pain-killers but also acquired them illegally through her charitable organization? What if Cindy McCain graduated from Harvard?

What if Obama had been a member of the Keating Five? (The Keating Five were five United States Senators accused of corruption in 1989, igniting a major political scandal as part of the larger Savings and Loan crisis of the late 1980s and early 1990s.)

What if McCain was a charismatic, eloquent speaker? What if Obama couldn't read from a teleprompter?

What if Obama was the one who had military experience that included discipline problems and a record of crashing planes?

What if Obama was the one who was known to display publicly, on many occasions, a serious anger management problem?

What if Michelle Obama's family had made their money from beer distribution?

You could easily add to this list. If these questions reflected reality, do you really believe the election numbers would be as close as they are?

This is what racism does. It covers up, rationalizes and minimizes positive qualities in one candidate and emphasizes negative qualities in another when there is a color difference.

Educational Backgrounds:

Barack Obama: Columbia University - B..A. Political Science with a Specialization in International Relations. Harvard - Juris Doctor (J.D.) Magna Cum Laude

Joseph Biden: University of Delaware - B.A. in History and B.A. in Political Science. Syracuse University College of Law - Juris Doctor (J.D.)

vs.

John McCain: United States Naval Academy - Class rank: 894 of 899 ( 6th from the bottom!!! )

Sarah Palin: Hawaii Pacific University - 1 semester North Idaho College - 2 semesters - general study University of Idaho - 2 semesters Journalism Matanuska-Susitna College - 1 semester University of Idaho - 3 semesters - B.A. in Journalism

Education isn't everything, but this is about the two highest offices in the land as well as our standing in the world...you make the call.

I hope someone is saving all this rubbish about Obama. I am not a computer ghuy, really, I have my archives for my work, but I'd love to see this spread out three years from now, named and tagged.

My friends are certainly hoping that Obama will change things and perhaps bring a peace-focus on policy, rather than a war focus. We'll see, power does a lot include corrupt the best of them. But I personally have hope for Obama.

And I urge everyone not to let up until the deal is done.

Cheers.

Many of these people who don't like Obama's tax plan look as if they would fall into the catagory of having lower taxes. Since they don't want his middle class tax breaks, maybe they should just return that money to the irs.
Amazing how paranoid some of these people can be. I received a chain email from my fundy cousin that snopes is in on the liberal plot to elect Obama and take away our freedoms. Sad how determined the right wingnuts are to not see reason. Even their body language in that video told me they are trying to shut their eyes to the truth.

These people are going totally whacko because after 28 years -- beginning with Reagan's election -- these so-called "conservatives" are masking their real fear: FEAR THAT THEY'RE ABOUT TO LOSE POWER.

The Conservative Era is about to come to an end and these people simply can't handle it. I feel sorry for them. They're going through what progressives went through when Reagan was elected.

Nothing lasts forever. The Great Liberal Era of JFK ended in 1980 after 20 years. Now the Great Conservative Era is coming to an end after 28 years. The pendulum never stays in one place; political, ideological and cultural norms always change with every succeeding generation-- and there's absolutely nothing that can stop it.

Here's the cold reality.

That's the nightmare. Here's the cold reality.

Swing state Colorado. Before this election, two Republican secretaries of state purged 19.4 percent of the entire voter roll. One in five voters. Pfft!

Swing state New Mexico. One in nine voters in this year's Democratic caucus found their names missing from the state-provided voter registries. And not just any voters. County by county, the number of voters disappeared was in direct proportion to the nonwhite population. Gore won the state by 366 votes; Kerry lost it by only 5,900. Despite reassurances that all has been fixed for Tuesday, Democrats lost from the list in February told me they're still "disappeared" from the lists this week.

Swing state Indiana. In this year's primary, ten nuns were turned away from the polls because of the state's new voter ID law. They had drivers' licenses, but being in their 80s and 90s, they'd let their licenses expire. Cute. But what isn't cute is this: 566,000 registered voters in that state don't have the ID required to vote. Most are racial minorities, the very elderly and first-time voters; that is, Obama voters. Twenty-three other states have new, vote-snatching ID requirements.

Swing state Florida. Despite a lawsuit battle waged by the Brennan Center for Justice, the state's Republican apparatchiks are attempting to block the votes of 85,000 new registrants, forcing them to pass through a new "verification" process. Funny thing: verification applies only to those who signed up in voter drives (mostly black), but not to voters registering at motor vehicle offices (mostly white).

Here's an ugly little secret about American democracy: We don't count all the votes. In 2004, based on the data from the US Elections Assistance Commission, 3,006,080 votes were not counted: "spoiled," unreadable and blank ballots; "provisional" ballots rejected; mail-in ballots disqualified.

This Tuesday, it will be worse. Much worse.

That's what I found while traveling the nation over the last year for BBC Television and Rolling Stone Magazine, working with voting rights attorney Robert F. Kennedy Jr. This we guarantee: there will be far more votes disappeared by Tuesday night than the three million lost in 2004. A six-million vote swipe, quite likely, shifts 4 percent of the ballots, within the margin of error of the tightest polls.

Begin with this harsh statistic: since the last election, more than ten million voters have been purged from the nation's vote registries. And that's just the start of the steal.

If the noncount were random, it wouldn't matter. But it's not random. A US Civil Rights Commission analysis shows that the chance a black voter's ballot will "spoil" or be blank is 900 percent higher than a white voter's.

Does that mean the election's stolen and you should forget voting and just go back to bed for four years? Hell, no. It means you vote and vote smart, learn how to pry their filthy little hands off your ballot (there's a link at the end).

It truly is amazing to see this delusional segment of our population, and worse yet is the talent the GOP has for whipping them into a frenzy. In fact, if you Google "brain/schizophrenia/religious fanatic" you can see medical evidence that supports the very scary fact that these folks are all unhinged and in need of some serious meds.

I would be more than interested in hearing what a black conservative has to say about Obama, but perhaps black conservatives have finally seen the ugly graffiti on the wall thanks to McCain and Palin's race-baiting and fear-mongering. If this is the shining example of "family values", then I want no part of them.

All I saw in that clip was a bunch of IGNORANT white people who are too gutless to say what they really believe--and that is they DO NOT want to see a black man in the White House. It frightens them to no end because this isn't the kind of world they are used to. They still have the mentality of those who lived in the 50's and 60's before those "pesky" civil rights folks "messed up" the status quo.

These people have had 21 months to thoroughly examine every angle of Barack Obama's record and his policies and it is rather obvious that these pathetic slugs have not done so. Instead, they have gotten their information (if one can call it that) from Faux News and Rush Lame-baugh.

This isn't about differences in policy, because even when the Republicans controlled Congress and the Senate, they still couldn't balance the budget nor did they manage to repeal Roe v. Wade. This is all about irrational fear and hatred. Ironically, the same Obama tax cuts they scoff at will be the same ones that will actually benefit them and their families.

Can we at least admit that this brand of stupid and gullible has nothing to do with living in a warmer climate? With having an accent? With living in a rural area?

Columbus is a major urban center with the largest university in the country. There is "stupid" there. There is also "stupid" in Los Angeles, on Wall Street, and on the Loop in Chicago.

There are greedy, self-righteous morons all over the place. Can we stop trying to tell people from one part of the country or other that we will de facto mock them upon hearing where they're from?

Can we start talking to people from every part of the country with a little respect?

After being around Republikaaners for far too many of my brief 42 years on this earth, I've come to the conclusion that these people just make shit up as-needed so they can remain a "believer" and/or part of what they perceive is the dominant in-group.

Look, every last person in this video is a total fuckhead; vapid, puerile, ignorant, and stubborn. They're pathologically lazy, dishonest, and narcissists. My own Dad is one of that brand of pathetic excuse for a human being. He hates McCrazy but he just couldn't bring himself to vote for Obama or even McKinney or Nader... he's given 15 different nonsensical reasons, all completely out of character with who he is and what he believes in, he's just making shit up so he can maintain his long standing habits, and so he doesn't have to come out and admit he's doing it so he doesn't vote for a n*gra--let's face it people, these dipshits are just patent KKK types, plain and simple and they are scared to death of their own shadows as a result. It's so pathetic. It's unreasonable, reckless and irresponsible and unbecoming of a human being.

They hate us and we are shocked by them. It's assinine. I hope someone gets the names of those in the vid so someone can at least try to begin publicly humiliating them on a routine basis. Or sumpin'...

This reminds me of a conversation I had with a good friend. We served together in the Gulf War and have kept in touch since getting out of the service, getting together about once a year.

We planned to meet in Crescent City, CA about half way between my place in the Bay Area and his in Vancouver, WA. How this came up I don't remember, but it was just before the elections in 2006 and at some point I mentioned that I thought that was a pretty liberal area. His response was, "Then I guess they won't care much for us."

The funny thing is that he's opposed to the war, the underfunding of VA hospitals, insane drug laws, religious fanaticism, and every other Bush/GOP position that I've ever discussed with him. But he's from an area and a background that considers itself conservative...

Long story short, I think most GOP voters are liberals who don't even realize it: They're working like crazy to stay afloat and just don't have the time or energy to re-evaluate where, politically, their own views and the reality of their situations logically places them.

Here we are on the doorstep of another US Presidential Election. If John McCain is declared the winner, everyone who voted should hit the streets and protest. It's that simple. The vote will have been manipulated because all polling up to now suggests Obama will win. And evidence exists already of vote flipping by the electronic machines. Vote flipping, voter intimidation, excessive challenges, voter purging, insufficient equipment (foreshadowed by the MSM TODAY!), secret certifications, inaccurate polling site location information. All these violations have been documented in the past 4 years and there's no reason to believe they won't be an issue this very week. STAND UP FOR YOUR VOTE, PEOPLE. And may God help us.

Why it is the national anthem

I used to not like the national anthem cause they would show all the military stuff when they played it on tv when they went off the air. But if you listen to the lyrics and know what it is about, it is very moving. Francis Scott Key was a prisoner on a ship in Baltimore harbor during the war of 1812, when we were attacked, and when he saw the flag still flying at dawn, after the night long battle, he was so moved and overjoyed that our nation prevailed, it inspired his patriotism to pen the poem, later put to the tune of a drinking song!

What does this teach us?

I've seen similarly scary videos posted in the past, from a variety of sites. What I wonder, though, is what does this really teach us? That there are people out there with extremely different viewpoints than our own, who are susceptible to the chain emails and spin they've been watching, not just on the usual suspect network(s), but on all the rest as well?

I'd love to see more videos that show a plethora of viewpoints, all in one place, rather than ones like this one that do their utmost to point out the cultural divide, so hyped up by both campaigns and the media. Showing these isolated videos of the extremists and those gullible to the spin of emails and media hype shows, we're seeing, I suspect, a very small spectrum of the average voter who's hoping for something that will change the way their lives work, and I say this, hopefully, for both Obama and McCain supporters. Surely it's not so black and white as this video paints it.

This presidential election cycle has been one of the ugliest in my memory, and I've been voting since 1976. I don't know that we've come out cleanly with this one, what with the racial and sexist aspersions that have been cast not only on the part of the Republicans but also in the early days of the primaries, from both parties. The low level of our political discourse has only sunk lower, in my opinion, exacerbated by an extraordinary amount of dependence on cable news and their sundry biases.

Read this article about hidden statistics
on black-on-white crime (mainstream media
refuse to report the awful impact black
men have had on society):

"Paul Sheehan, an Australian reporter, dug out the following Information for an article in the Sydney Morning Herald, May 2, 1995.

Sheehan based his statistics on crime data compiled by the FBI and partially reported each year in The FBI Uniform Crime Report . These reports can be researched At the FBI's website, www.fbi.gov.

"Since the FBI doesn't distinguish between Hispanics and whites, Sheehan's statistics don't adequately reflect the black-white crime situation.

"Only about 10-15% of Hispanics are white, with the rest being Indian or a mixture of white, American Indian, and blacks.

"Hispanic crime rates are almost as high as black crime rates. This means that the data Sheehan compiled on inter-racial crime is probably grossly understated since a considerable portion of the "white against black" crime actually is Hispanic-against-black crime. (Information about this aspect of inter-racial crime will be presented in a related article.)

"Here is the information Sheehan uncovered in his analysis of the FBI's crime reports:

-"Blacks murder more than 1,600 whites each year.

-"Blacks murder whites at 18 times the rate whites murder blacks.

-"Blacks murdered, raped, robbed, or assaulted about one million whites In 1992.

-"In the last 30 years, blacks committed 170 million violent and non-violent crimes against whites.

-"Blacks under 18 are more than 12 times more likely to be arrested for murder than whites under 18.

-"About 90% of the victims of interracial crimes are white.

-"Blacks commit 7.5 times more violent interracial crimes than whites, although whites outnumber blacks by 7 to 1.

-"On a per capita basis, blacks commit 50 times more violent crime than whites.

-"Black neighborhoods are 35 times more violent than white neighborhoods.

-"Of the 27 million nonviolent robberies in 1992, 31% (8.4 million) were committed by blacks against whites. Less than 2% were committed by whites against blacks.

-"Of the 6.6 million violent crimes, 20% (1.3 million) were interracial.

-"Of the the 1.3 million interracial violent crimes, 90% (1.17 million) are black against white.

-"In the past 20 years, violent crime increased four times faster than the population.

-"In the last 30 years (1964-94), more than 45,000 people were killed in interracial murders compared to 38,000 killed in Korea and 58,000 in Vietnam.

-"Sheehan commented that the contents of his article could not possibly be published or discussed in the U.S. mainstream media.

-"In the last 50 years, the white part of the American population has declined from 90% to 72%. The U.S. now has about 33 million blacks and 25 million Hispanics (legal and illegal). By the year 2050, American whites will be a minority, just 49%. By 2100, whites will be 25% of the population.

-"What will life for whites be like in the future?"

-end of report
