Election 2008

Michelle 'McCarthy' Bachmann -- The Hate Monger of Minnesota

By Max Blumenthal, The Daily Beast. Posted October 28, 2008.

How a Minnesota congresswoman became the poster child for the GOP's election 2008 crack-up.

Rep. Michele Bachmann, a Republican from Minnesota, is now notorious for an incident on the October 17 edition of Hardball. Bachmann told Chris Matthews she was "concerned" that Obama "may have anti-American views," and linked him to a Who's Who of leftist agitators, from William Ayers to Saul Alinsky to Ward Churchill. "I wish the American media would take a great look at the views of the people in Congress and find out, are they pro-America or anti-America?" Bachmann said.

Bachmann's comments were an extreme example of McCain-Palin campaign's closing theme: "Real America" and the "the pro-American parts of America" against nebulous socialist elites who "pal around with terrorists." The once reliable tactic backfired in dramatic fashion, jeopardizing Bachmann's reelection in what was once one of the country's safest Republican districts. Bachmann is now the poster child of her party's mounting political woes.

In 2005, while serving in the Minnesota state senate, Bachmann crept surreptitiously to the perimeter of a protest against a bill banning same-sex marriage. She ducked behind a bush, and for several minutes, Bachmann and a staffer observed the rally like spies.

While Bachmann's gaffe startled pundits, a review of her political career shows she has a habit of unusual behavior and inflammatory statements. The fact that she has gotten away with it owes to her relative obscurity and her protection from religious conservatives. "Bachmann was an accident waiting to happen," Steve Perry, the editorial director of the left-learning political news website, The Minnesota Independent, told me. "With no expertise in secular matters, she was caught between an enormous desire for attention and a well justified interest in repelling scrutiny."

In 2005, while serving in the Minnesota state senate, Bachmann crept surreptitiously to the perimeter of a protest against a bill banning same-sex marriage. She ducked behind a bush, and for several minutes, Bachmann and a staffer observed the rally like spies. When a demonstrator approached the half-hidden Bachmann with a camera in hand, she scurried away, jumped in an SUV, and bolted from the scene.

Bachmann justified her behavior as an outgrowth of her religious convictions. She explained to a local mega-church audience soon after the incident: "For 34 years, I've been hot! And you want to be hot! Because when you are hot for Jesus Christ, there is nothing that is like that life!"

Michele Bachmann's evangelical convictions emerged after meeting her future husband, Marcus, a born-again activist who worked with her on Jimmy Carter's 1976 presidential campaign. They married after Michele earned her law degree from Oral Roberts University. "I thought to myself, Oooh. I don't even like this guy," Michele reflected before worshippers at a megachurch. "And he thought, 'Oooh, I'm 22. I don't want to get married. I don't think I even like her' And so we obeyed God and we honored Him in our relationship. And pretty soon some romantic things started happening. And then we got married." While his wife's conservative political activities intensified, Marcus stayed behind the scenes, setting homosexuals on the straight path at his "Christian counseling" center. Besides their five sons and daughters, the Bachmanns have raised 23 foster children.

Michele Bachmann entered local politics during the early 1990's through EdWatch, a right-wing group in Minnesota that vowed to remake the country's "entire education system." She founded a publicly funded Christian charter school where creationism was taught in biology classes and, according to the Minneapolis City Pages, students were forbidden from viewing the Disney movie Aladdin because it supposedly contained anti-Christian themes. After spearheading a failed right-wing takeover attempt of the Stillwater, Minnesota, school board, Bachmann won a state senate seat in 2000 with the backing of several churches in her district.

Bachmann shunned most mainstream reporters upon entering office, opting instead for regular spots on right-wing radio. In 2004, Bachmann made a series of appearances on the radio show of Jan Markell, a self-proclaimed "Jew for Jesus," attempting to rally supporters in favor of a federal ban on same-sex marriage. "This is a very serious matter," Bachmann proclaimed on Markel's show in 2004, "because it is our children who are the prize for this [gay] community, they are specifically targeting our children."

This Lunatic Was My Introduction to Minnesota Nice.

Back around the time I found myself in the lovely State of Minnesota, fresh out of rehab & trying to figure out how to put my life back together (or, more accurately, together for the first time), I vividly recall reading about this crazylady's protester "monitoring" misadventures.

"Oh, man," I thought, "what've I gotten myself into? They didn't even pull stunts like this back in Indiana!"

Turns out, your average Minnesotan finds these sorts of obscene circus acts to be pretty embarrassing. MB is hardly representative of the good people here, she's more likely the product of some sort of weird space-time rift.

If her recent funding woes & polling stall are indicative of anything, it's that the solid citizens of Minnesota have been waiting for her to do something like this so we can have her off the radar for good. & good riddance.

Palin stearing committee:

These represent the Palin demographics and would adore the attention: Paris Hilton (gotta have money, good name recognition),Jerry Springer, Joey Buttefuco, The Olson Twins (so when one is in rehab the other can do campaign work), the Spears sisters (same reasoning), Rosanne Barr, Tonya Harding, after all they really are pit bulls in heels and lipstick. At least one is not opposed to committing acts of violence if that's what it takes to win.

Michele Bachmann pals around with money launderers
Posted by: saintcroix on Oct 28, 2008 7:10 PM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
One of Michele Bachmann's biggest campaign contributors is Frank Vennes Jr., a convicted money launderer/cocaine distributor/illegal gun seller. Bachmann is such good friends with Vennes that she wrote him a letter of recommendation for a presidential pardon for his crimes. Six months later Vennes and his wife kicked in another $9200 into Bachmann's campaign. But when Vennes was implicated in a $3 billion dollar financial fraud scandal in Minnesota last month, Bachmann withdrew her pardon recommendation and donated some of his campaign contributions to a charity connected to Vennes--all before he has even been indicted. Read lots more about Bachmann's relationship with this convicted felon here:

How Perfectly "Logical"...Why Shouldn't We Trust Somebody With A "Heart" Like Hers?
Posted by: ZPaul on Oct 29, 2008 1:50 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
"I may not always get my words right," Bachmann pleaded in a campaign commercial "but I know my heart is right--because my heart is for you."

Oh, I see. What a "perfectly logical reason" to support her. Because in spite of the hate and ignorance she propagates, she says her "heart is right" - and then goes on to personalize her plea with "my heart is for you."

Can't beat that "logic", can you?

The worrying thing is that there are actually people who swallow this B.S.....

Palin/Bachman '12

The great schism of the Republican party, in the case of a Democrat landslide, would probably result in the creation of an ultra-right 'values' wing (the likes of which Palin, Bachman and Sam Brownback [to name a few] belong) and the economic-libertarian-esque wing. If the 'Kansas effect' reverberates nationwide, then players like Palin and Bachman would rise to political prominence.
Suddenly, doesn't Guliani seem the lesser of the nutjobs?
At least he would have left Palin under the Alaskan rock.

I don't know about the rest of you people, but I don't think that putting children into a foster home where they end up being sent to some bogus charter "school" that teaches creationism in biology class is doing them a service. In fact, I think it's damned abusive. I used to blame Ronald Reagan and his idiotic notions about education for the overall stupidity of the current American voter, but the more I learn about charter "schools" and home-"schooling" the more convinced I am that he's not the only one to blame.

Has anyone else noticed how much she resembles Shirley Phelps-Roper? She's got the same look in her eyes, the look of a crazed fanatic (or meth addict).

It's been said here before, by me and others, that it is time to tax the churches, and tax them so heavily that they get their damned noses out of the business of politics and back into the business of saving souls or whatever it is they claim to do. Ya gotta pay to play, and I'm sick and tired of these delusional freaks getting a free ride.

I was actually watching that installment of HardBall when that idiotic woman put both feet in her mouth and swallwed.

Watching the utter implosion of the GOP during this political season has been an absolte joy. We're talking the gift that just keeps giving and giving.

And now she's blaming her problems on Chris Matthews???

"He laid a trap for me"

He didn't. She offered the Matthews man hew opinion that the news media ought to investigate the anti-Americanism of every member on congress without a bit of prompting.

It's the end of the line. The chickens are about to come home to roost with a vengeance, baby! If these hideous bastards and bithes are allowed to steal this thing - AGAIN - the national thunder will be too horrible to even contemplate. The people are awakening from the right wing coma they've been snoozing under sincer that day twenty-eight years ago when they sent a senile, feeble-minded, B movie actor named Ronald Reagan to the White House. They have opened their eyes and they're not linking what they're seeing.

As they were seventy six years ago - almost to the day - a hus=ge segment of the electorate has become radicalized. So readical, in fact, that they're are about to send an African American to the White House. That's preety freaking radical, man! That's progress, too!

She's scary-crazy and the opponent dangerous. The choice isn't easy: crazed zealot (her) or Blue Dog (him -endorsed by those who voted for Bush's military commissions act, FISA enhancements and Patriot Act). Pro-life(her) or pro-life (him). Pro-war (her) or pro-war (him). Cronyism (her- Big oil, tobacco, insurance, etc) or Lobbyist (him- mining industry and taconite aggregate aka possible source of mesothelioma). Religious zealot (her) or former minister (him). Who would you want?? Very difficult choice.

It's likely that she's done herself in due to her candor in the press. But, a Blue Dog? How many more of them do we need in Congress? Haven't we learned enough about them to understand they're Bushies in dem clothes?

McCarthyism!
Posted by: Cybershaman on Oct 29, 2008 5:49 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Joe McCarthys type of tactics were not an aberation. Nixon was his protoge' and Reagan one of his most ardent blacklisters. We've seen these tactics all along with the constant attempt to label anyone who questions the logic of the 'conservative' ideology as 'UnAmerican'. Lord knows they will NEVER question their own decision making capabilities even in the face of the disasters they create.

That's the beauty of their mindset. By refusing to critically analyse their ideological stance these neocons never question their own judgement and definitely never entertain the notion that they make bad decisions. When you refuse to do that you can make the absolute worst decisions imaginable. Of course, when things DO go 'belly up' they frantically look for some poor scapegoat to blame so they, again, never have to question their judgement.

The most insidious aspect of this is how people tend to become what they fight against. Our religious fundamentalists are acting just like the Taliban. The X-tian world has their own version of Sharia Law if you ask me and it's strikingly similar. This whole thing about not being 'American enough' is really just code for not being 'Christian enough', and isn't that the same as not being 'Muslim enough'? Most religions have this same schism. At it's base it really is the difference between those who believe in a loving God and those who believe in a cruel, vengeful God. The enlightened tend to go for the loving God who actually approves of secularism since it reduces the chance of infighting and bloodshed.

"Backward" Bachman
Posted by: USAFVeteran1966 on Oct 29, 2008 6:07 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
I googled the Internet this morning with Rep. Bachmann's name and came across the following article published on March 27 by Wonkette.com, a really cool website.

"Michele Bachmann Declares War On Light Bulbs"

Insane baby-farming robot-herder and sometime Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann has a new enemy: fluorescent light bulbs. That’s right. She doesn't care for these newfangled hippie environmentalist group-sex bulbs, preferring the honest and trustworthy incandescent kind. And now she is taking her case to the American people with her “Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act.”

Bachmann is upset that a cabal of legislators and the fluorescent light bulb lobby is pissing on old-fashioned American values with their freaky new demands to phase out incandescents.

“I was just outraged that Congress would want to substitute its judgment for the judgment of the American people,” she said. “It struck me as a massive Big Brother intrusion into our homes and our lives.”

So now she is introducing the pro-incandescent Freedom of Choice Act, which is hilarious because she does not like abortion, or “choice,” as the baby-killers like to call it.

End of extract.

From my experience of replacing every incandescent bulb in and outside my house with energy-efficient squigglies for one dollar each and realizing a $50 monthly savings, I think Michelle deserves another nickname in addition to McCarthy -- "Backward" Bachman.

Equally applicable is "Stupid" Bachman.

Bachmann sounds a lot like Palin. And they do say that the GOP may split, with the money Republicans separating themselves out and the Jesus Republicans forming around Palin (and it sounds as if Bachmann would be in there someplace). Also too. Fine---but we must never again allow religious extremists to take central control of this country. I hope to hear by next spring that the Prayer Closets have been removed from the White House. Go Obama.

In Bachmann's new commercial (about "her heart being with you") she states something like this: you can have your government involved in your life, or you can have liberty. I could be wrong, but I grew up thinking our country, which (in theory) has a government made up of our elected representatives, is a free country with liberty and justice for all. I would argue that it has lost that status to some degree during the years of the Bush administration. But if you listen to her actual words, it sounds almost like she is advocating an overthrow of our government. Hmmmm...now that I think about it, she probably is.

The Mormon and Catholic churches are funding megabucks across state lines to defeat gay-marriage and pro-choice. We need a constitutional amendment, starting with constitutional amendments at the states level, to deny all tax-exemptions to churches who fund politcal action groups or who engage in any activities aimed at influencing voters.

Also, it is so sad that these crazy women are bashing all the progress that women have achieved on their road to political and social equality. Women should set a better example. Unfortunately, it is the female nut-jobs who get all the media attention while the women working for a better and more just society are ignored.

This may be the dumbest bitc- on the planet, well her and Palin are fighting it out for that honor. McCain has to be going home at night and praying that they both die of a stroke before Nov 4th. Two of the biggest chains around the Big Cowards neck because he's no hero to this Vietnam vet.

Here's a slice of REAL America for you:

I'm gay. I am MARRIED to my partner. A legal wedding. L.E.G.A.L.

I'm an atheist. Let me spell that out for you: I don't believe in ANY gods. Not yours. Not any god. Nada. Zilch. They exist only in people's imagination. Yours (your imagination and your god) are especially laughable.

I vote.

I was honorably discharged from the USMC.

I own two guns. I know precisely how to use them.

Now for a surprise: I've never been arrested for ANYTHING. I know the difference between moralizing and ethical behavior.

Get used to this. It's called real America.

I live in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It's just spittin distance from Michele Bachmann's District. Most of the people are like her. It comes from something called the "Stearns County Syndrome"
"the Stearns County Syndrome". Stearns County is a farming community in central Minnesota, populated mainly by German Catholics. Social workers claim that in that county 75% of the families are involved in incest, usually father-daughter, and usually with the consent of the mother. The rationale, apparently, is that since divorce is so taboo, it was way of keeping the family together when the father tired of having sex with the mother. They said that it led to a stream of young, blond girls from Stearns County entering into prostitution, first in Minneapolis, and from there to New York.
Michele represents these folks.
