Election 2008

Women's Health: Yet Another Issue Sarah Palin is Out of Touch On

By Cecile Richards, Huffington Post. Posted October 2, 2008.

Women voting for McCain-Palin is like chickens voting for Col. Sanders.

Over the last several weeks, it has become apparent that Sarah Palin is out of touch on a whole host of issues, ranging from the bailout and the economy to foreign policy to the Supreme Court. After this week's interview with Katie Couric, we can now add women's health to the list.

Her answers on reproductive health issues, such as criminalizing abortion, exceptions for rape and incest, and what exactly the morning-after pill is, were a rambling mix of contradictions and platitudes, much like her answers about Russia bordering Alaska, the bailout, health care, and the economy.

So, for the vice-presidential debate tonight, here's what I'd ask Sarah Palin to answer directly:

1. You said in your interview with Katie Couric that you are "all for contraception," but then you said you don't support the morning-after pill. Do you know that the morning-after pill IS contraception, it's simply a higher dose of hormonal birth control? Now that you know that, does it change how you feel about it being made available?

2. You said that abortion should be illegal even in the cases of rape or incest, but then you said no one should end up in jail for having an abortion. I assume when you say it should be illegal, that you mean it should be a crime - if you don't think anyone should go to jail, how would you enforce it?

3. You say that you believe there is an inherent right to privacy in the Constitution, yet you want to overturn Roe v. Wade, which is based on a right to privacy. How do you reconcile these two conflicting beliefs?

4. You say that you support abstinence-only policies, which have been proven over and over to be ineffective. Then you seem to contradict yourself, saying that you are "pro-contraception." What exactly are you for, comprehensive sex education, which includes teaching of abstinence as well as contraception and prevention; or "abstinence-only until marriage," which typically does not cover contraception. As vice president, would you like to continue President Bush's legacy in funneling millions of federal dollars to ineffective "abstinence-only" programs, or do you support comprehensive sex education programs that include abstinence and have proven to reduce the number of teen pregnancies?

5. Will you continue to cut funding for support of young mothers? After cutting funding by 20 percent for Covenant House Alaska, a place with the resources and assistance to help teen mothers gain the necessary skills to create a stable life, will you extend this to the rest of young, low-income mothers in the U.S.?

6. Considering all of these things, would you say that the women of America will have a champion in Sarah Palin as vice president?

We thought it couldn't get more anti-choice and more extreme for women and for health care than George Bush and John McCain. But let's face it -- with Sarah Palin, John McCain has outdone himself. Women voting for McCain-Palin is like chickens voting for Col. Sanders. That is not a risk we can afford to take.

I feel sorry for her poor little down's baby

Sarah is walking down the steps exiting the airplane, holding her baby with one arm while she waves and tries to keep her hair out of her eyes as she takes those steep stairs in high heels. Honestly, this is just plain wrong, it makes me sick. That baby is a prop.

Wake up and be alert!

This Thursday V.P. debate was sickening in how Sarah Palin from the onset started to recite her Bush/McCain, negative, attack the Democrats speech that she studied in Arizona with the loser McCain.

Just look when she speaks and the demonic look in her eyes as she attacks Obama with lies.

Sarah Palin is naive and a country bumpkin with No Foreign Affair experience and Governs a small State Alaska where she is under investigation for "Abuse of Power".

At the debate, Palin said, "She thinks that more Power should be given to the V.P. OMG

Sarah Palin is Scary and Wrong for America!

Do not give into the lies of John McCain and Sarah Palin.

Have no doubt, they both would continue the Bush Failed Policies.

We cannot afford a Third Bush Term.

November 4, 2008, vote for change, elect
Barack Obama for President.

More tactics to scare women

That is not how I saw the interview...

Persons such as yourself believe that the only way to hold on to the women's vote is to scare us that we will not have our privacy and our reproductive rights...

Being as most of these articles are written by men, it is understandable that your mind is thinking sex and that you believe that is where women's minds are as well...get a clue, we are about a lot of issues not just our right to reproduce, and most of us by now know about how we have babies and how not to have them.

Roe Wade if over turned would then go to the states...which she said in her interview is where she would like this to go. Six Presidents, have not changed this, and as you know 4 of the 6 where not for Choice.

This is only a tactic to scare women to vote for Obama? There is not a story here...

Whereas Palin opposes choice for 50% of the country regarding a single medical procedure...

...recall that Hilary Clinton--going back as far as when her only political qualification was being the wife of a president--wanted to subject the entire population to her anti-choice health care agenda. Just imagine: an unelected figurehead rewriting your options for medical treatment in a free and liberal society!

It is important to recognize those among us that would subvert our medical choices, especially when they are our likely to be our candidates. It is also important to remember that when we talk about candidates being "pro-choice" or "anti-choice", there are often other choices at stake besides besides That One.

Palin's no different from Condi Rice and Clarence Thomas, get it ? But finally, thank's for putting healthcare center stage although it still is disgraceful that it's healthcare for women only and nothing about men. Without men, women would be nowhere at some point. Now let's be honest and make it clear that Palin is against healthcare for women and men, PERIOD !

Inflammatory Words Don't Make Good Discussion - Or Policy

I consider myself one of many women who have a position smack in the middle of the abortion and contraception issues. I support Roe vs. Wade and use of birth control, and I'm an Obama Mama.

However, I am sickened by the tone and rhetoric used in talking about this issue - and the way real concerns (shared by many) are merely brushed aside with catch phrases.

Describing people as "pro-choice" or "pro-life" is a deliberate move to marginalize and de-humanize those with different views, and both terms are deceptive.

The "choice" language wants to pretend that at no point is there a real question on whether a human life is being ended through an abortion. The "pro-life" people, on the other hand, seem oblivious to the disparity with their common positions in favor of the death penalty (proved to often take "innocent" life) and war (same).

Roe vs. Wade was actually, in my mind, a brilliant decision that took into account the complexity of the issue and what role the state should take. It is NOT an abortion on demand ruling. Instead, the justices took the practical viewpoint of looking at "viability". That is, if the entity in question can survive OUTSIDE the mother - if it looks like a baby, cries like a baby, suffers and dies like a baby, then we need to treat it as - a baby. In the early stages of pregnancy, when independent life is not possible for the fetus outside the womb, and when it is virtually unrecognizable as a "person", the law sees it as a part of the mother, and therefore her business.

The other reason that the shorthand use of the word "choice" rankles me is that I feel choice is denied me when it comes to taking care of my non-pregnant body. I have found that for me, what is presently mainstream, high-tech, surgery and drug dominated medicine is useless or damaging. There is a lot of evidence that 100s of thousands of people are killed or injured by medical treatment each year. Meanwhile, for many conditions, natural alternative medicine offers good, inexpensive and safer options, recognized and covered by other countries national health plans. Yet here, in the land of the free, ninety per cent of health insurance, including Medicare, refuse me access to such. So much for real, significant "choice"!

The majority of women, I believe, do not have abortion as the one and only, the top concern in their minds. Other health questions are far more prevalent and urgent for most of our lives.

Sarah Palin, George W. Bush, and John McCain, are all dangerous for the same reasons:

(1) They have bought into an ideology that has brought this country to the brink of catastrophe, and yet they realize nothing, not the policies they have enabled, nor the fact that they have/and would put either their cronies or incompetents into office (think: Katrina)!

(2) Neither the current Mis-administration nor the would be McShame/Palin has a clue about Foreign Policy (being able to see the Siberian Peninsula doesn't count, not knowing that Spain is not located in Latin America - PRICELESS!), nor has any understanding of "other"(peoples, countries, cultures)!

(3) They are LIARS!

(4)Giving them the ultimate power as President of the USA (nuclear finger and all), should send us all running away from them with chills (think Terminator movies only it won't be the movies)!

As one of those people that have so much love for the un-born then why did she cut funding for Convenent House Alaska? And why exactly were rape victims required to pay for their own rape kits?!

As one of those people that love the un-born - she really doesn't give a damn about the born here and now! That is exactly why she and McShame need to stay out of the White House!

Sorry, this is a straw-man distortion of Sarah Palin's views. She, like many Americans, has strongly held negative views on abortion, but she has NEVER sought to legislate or regulate abortion to match her views as either mayor or governor in Alaska.

The morning-after pill is certainly not contraception: the whole point is to provide an abortifacient if desired. Sorry you missed that, too.

Most Americans support abstinence education along with age-appropriate sex education. Palin is completely mainstream on this, also.

Palin has supported many programs supporting women in Alaska--to cherry-pick her decision on one issue where she attempted to rein in government spending overall should be beneath competent journalists.

So, should a woman support Sarah Palin? Absolutely and in good conscience, as do I. You see, we are not all Blue State Feminists who tie feminism to a specific political agenda most American women do not agree with. There is a new force: Red State Feminism, and we are feminists who support Sarah Palin.

21st Century. Apparently the "Abstinence" classes do not work. Sarah Palin has obstructed Sex Education in the Alaska school system. Would you prefer your daughter in her early teens to be a mom? What if the father of her fertilized egg refuses to marry her? Maybe a morning after pill is not such a bad idea.
