'If You Can Run the PTA, You Can Run the Country' -- Republicans Explain Their Support for Palin
Sign up to stay up to date on the latest Election 2008 headlines via email.
In a series of interviews with Palin supporters on Monday before a Bexley, Ohio rally featuring Palin and GOP presidential nominee John McCain, Palin fans detailed many reasons why they like -- if not love -- her candidacy.
They said she was feisty, plain spoken and not afraid to take on fights others shirk from. She was from the middle-class, balanced family and work, and had worked at thankless jobs -- like her local PTA -- and exemplified Christian family values. They said Palin was a fast learner, was undaunted by her critics, and gave hope to women who see her rising to the role given to her by McCain. And, most notably, they said she would be a good president.
"I've been there," said Ellie Plessinger, a real estate consultant from Saganaw, Michigan, who extolled Palin's work on local schools. "If you can run the PTA, you can run the country."
"She's real. Everyone can identify with her," said Karen Rinehart, from Pinkerton, a suburb of Columbus, who praised her clarity. "She has five kids. I have six."
"She is a go-getter. She is adorable," said Diedre Smalley, from Lancaster, also near Columbus, who was enthralled by Palin's values. "She is conservative. She is family oriented. She is pro-life. She is her own woman. She makes me feel proud."
These and other comments reveal that Palin's supporters feel as strongly about her as her liberal critics. In conversations with these and other fans at a rally at Capital University, a Lutheran school in a small township inside Ohio's capital city, it became clear that Palin's political base was formidable and undeterred by her critics and detractors, including editorialists who have said she is unprepared to become president.
"Who is?" replied Rinehart, when asked if Palin was prepared to be president. "You can't say that anybody who has been there has been prepared for it. You are not prepared for it until you do it. Nobody is prepared for vice-president or president until you do it."
"I think he (McCain) is very knowledgeable about defense and security; I don't know how knowledgeable she is about that," she said. "But she has the gumption to learn and do what is right. You don't read about Alaska in the tabloids. You read about Washington and everywhere else. She has kept it clean."
"When she did her (Republican National Convention) speech, I was floored," Smalley said. "They (McCain and Palin) are exactly what America needs right now."
While Palin critics have scorned her experiences as provincial and not world-wise, Palin's middle-class roots and family life pleased these supporters.
"I come from the middle-class," said Plessinger. "She symbolizes the middle class by her story. She wasn't raised like the Kennedys or Teresa Heinz Kerry or the Rockefellers. The richest people in our government are Democrats. It came out last week. John Kerry was the richest. You get the idea that they come into our politics like they are entitled. The drive-by media has made misperception that only the Republicans are elite, or are wealthy."
Plessinger said she was put off by media reports that describe Alaska as "backwards or unsophisticated." She said she, like Palin, has worked on her local PTA "in leadership positions" for many years "for the kids." Plessinger was impressed that Palin not only took on thankless hard PTA fights and won, but that she then sought higher office.
"You have to deal with all kinds of conflicting interests," she said, referring to working for local schools. "People diminish that and say it doesn't matter. Palin was successful. Then she runs for governor and takes on problems in our party. She saw corruption and she stood up to it. She stood up to the oil industry. I know exactly what it takes I wish we had leaders like that in Ohio."
Plessinger was wearing six Palin campaign buttons, including one showing Palin holding a shotgun saying, in pink lettering, "Read my Lipstick: Change is Coming."
"She came from a middle-class family. She did it with conviction and grit," Plessinger concluded. "God's in charge. I'm voting for God first."
Others at the rally were drawn to Palin's accomplishments as a mother and politician.
"She's awesome," said Tracey Chernek, a nursing student from Columbus. "She says what she needs to say without backing down. She is a lot like Sen. McCain. They are very opinionated and they don't back down."
Chernek said Palin's ability to balance work and family were inspiring.
"She has a family and a lot of Americans can relate to that," she said. "She is a working mother. She has kids. She works and she balances it out. A lot of women struggle with that."
Chernek also said she was offended by attacks in the media on Palin's family.
"There is a lot of bad press -- like her daughter who is pregnant at 17. You can't chastise a family for having a daughter who is pregnant at 17. A lot of parents worry about that or have been in that situation themselves. It's part of life. She has a normal family like everybody else. I think it is kind of seamy that Democrats get on her butt about mistakes her daughter made."
"It's her integrity," Smalley said, "what she has done for her state, and yet she is able to have a family, a career, a husband. It just gives woman hope that we can do it. She is sassy and we like sassy."
Perspective, please
Liberal critics will take issue with many of these assertions about Palin's experience, family life, political record and accomplishments. Indeed, many of the traits praised by Palin's supporters came from her Republican National Convention speech that was not written by her, but like all presidential campaigns, crafted by speechwriters to echo the campaign's talking points to the media and voters.
But Palin's critics risk not fully understanding the race's dynamics by underestimating her or her base, just as the GOP risks underestimating the enthusiasm of first-time voters who support Barack Obama. It is not an accident that Palin was chosen by McCain to be his running mate. Indeed, at the Monday rally, while McCain attacked Obama, Palin introduced some new lines of attack -- on Obama and on Joe Biden, the Democratic vice presidential nominee. Palin began by referring to last week's presidential debate.
"He (McCain) was the only man on that stage who talked about the wars America was fighting and was not afraid to use the word victory," Palin said, opening a line of attack that said McCain was the only man in the race. "He was the only man on that stage who will solve our economic crisis and not exploit it, the maverick who always puts country first. And he was the only man on that stage who has a plan that will actually help working families and put the economy back on track like you all deserve. Ohio, that's the kind of man, that's the kind of leadership that we need in Washington and that's the kind of man that we will get if you vote for him."
That part of her speech was reminiscent of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger early months in office when he attacked California Democrats as "girlie men" for not adopting his legislative proposals.
Palin gamely said she was ready to debate Biden this Thursday.
"And I do look forward to Thursday night and debating Sen. Joe Biden," she said. "We are going to talk about new ideas and new energy for America. I'm looking forward to meeting him. I've never met him before. But I have been hearing about his speeches since I was like in second grade."
"I have to admit though, he is a great debater and looks pretty doggone confident like he's sure he's gonna win," she continued. "But then again, this is the same Senator Biden who said the other day that the University of Delaware would trounce the Ohio State Buckeyes. Wrong!"
Palin's remarks brought cheers and jeers, revving up the party's Ohio base in a rally that was attended by several thousand people, half of them college students. While Democrats in the room ridiculed her remarks and those by McCain -- especially his claim that only he was free from special interest money in Washington -- by recalling how McCain was among five senators who were called "the Keating five" in a savings and loan scandal, the mood in the room seemed to transcend any real discussion about facts or history.
Instead, the GOP faithful firmly believed in their view of their party and its candidates. They were excited by Palin's presence -- as measured by cheers. Nobody interviewed praised McCain for being "sassy," or showing "grit," or being a "go-getter" or being inspirational. She spoke for 11 minutes; McCain spoke for 16 minutes.
On Tuesday, with Election Day 35 days away, early voting begins in Ohio. There is a five-day window where new voters can register and vote before the voter registration deadline closes. How many new voters each party attracts in this window will reveal much about the race's momentum in Ohio. That metric, more than the campaign's rhetoric and fervor of supporters, will be the real reality test.

Why do people in this country want a president that is just like them? (And yes I know she is only the VP candidate, but if you think McCain lasts a full term in office you're out of your minds!) The president is supposed to represent the BEST of this country and speak to the rest of the world on our behalf. The president should be the most elite that we have, the best of the best. I don't want some redneck running the country because, "hey! he/she drinks Coors Light too and shoots shit!" Seriously, if that really is half of this country's view, I need to get the $%#@ out of Dodge.
Also, I don't need a president, or for that matter, a VP sitting around worrying about their infant children. We're supposed to delay talks with other countries or postpone major votes on legislation because baby whatever is feeling a little colicy? Please.
Finally, the title says all you need to know about the people that support this nut job: "If you can run the PTA you can run the country..." Are you out of your mind!?
Sorry for the rant, but I am simply stunned by my "fellow americans".

Indeed, the mass ignorance crosses both party lines. Americans elect leaders who are least capable, least responsible to democracy and the will of the people; americans elect people who look and act just like them! There's a conspiracy against intellectual reasoning and statistical fact, as too many americans operate on fear and emotion.
There are contradictions, though, that boggle the mind. For the most part, people seek experts for advice from professionals like doctors and lawyers, but somehow think we should hold politicians to a lower (much lower) standard. The danger of this dumbing down of america is, of course, nihilistic imperialism, as demonstrated by the Bush regime.
America was duped into illegally invading Iraq. Barack Obama and the Dems harness that same emotion and fear in the form of pseudo-hope and eloquent but empty verbiage.
The rational and reasonable independent or third party choices for president have been marginalized by the corporate media and Alternet, Michael Moore, Jon Stewart and Keith Olbermann.
Those liberal media pundits do not lack critical commentary. Indeed, they deliver right-on criticisms on most problems infecting america, like the Iraq war, healthcare, Wall Street bail outs. However, after delivering the bad news, they sell us a candidate who falls short on all those issues.
They are part of the Kakistocracy.
As I said, though, I blame the educational system, which has successfully dumbed down the curriculum, reduced critical thought to multiple choice questions on standardized tests and has successfully taught millions of americans to demand less of themselves and their leaders.
peace

I guess that most Republicans realize that you really don't need special skills to be a leader. Look at all the Conservatives in high leadership positions. Look at all these Republican women that adore Sarah, understanding that their Republican Husbands, who are making seven figure salaries, don't have any special skills either. It is all starting to make sense to me now.

Obama is going to win the election, which doesn't necessarily mean he will be President (see Gore and Kerry). He will, however, if the vote for him is simply too large to manipulate. It needs to be overwhelming, obviously overwhelming.
Don't despair so much over Palin's candidacy, everyone has a right to be represented in the process, and it's creating interest in the election. The more people are exposed to her, the more she will scare the crap out of anyone in the Republican camp who is not totally brain dead, and yes, there are such people. This candidacy is giving them final notice of how far their party has fallen. There are Republicans who actually put the interests of their country first, and they will not vote for McCain, in large part because of who his running mate is.
I personally wish that Obama were more progressive, but if he were, we might not get as many Republicans making the switch, and McCain could get elected. So thank Palin for running, and work your ass off to get people registered and to the polls. We need a massive turnout to counter whatever nefarious deeds the Rovians have cooked up this time.

People who "vote for God first" can't be reasoned with because they are not open to questioning their "beliefs." So what can you do about it? Keep them out of the political system through legislative action.

Without mentioning how deplorable I find her viewpoints, nor mentioning her family woes, I've attempted to get them to see the point that however "sassy" and engaging they may find this woman, that she's simply unprepared and unqualified to lead this nation should John McCain become incapacitated during his term in office.
They simply brush off the concerns about McCain's health, insisting that 'she's not running for President'. They assert with straight faces that Palin is more qualified to be President than Obama, insisting that her experience, however light it is, as mayor of Wasilla and governor of Alaska is more relevant to the office of POTUS than Obama's Ivy League education and experience in the Illinois State Senate and United States Senate because it is "executive" experience. They similarly brush aside Biden's nearly 40 years in the US Senate as also irrelevant because it's not "executive" experience.
They fail to note, naturally, that John McCain's experience also comes from the Senate and are untroubled and unconcerned that McCain chose someone so obviously unqualified when there were more suitable running mates available.
I am appalled at the staggering ignorance of the average Republican voter in my area. I had thought that no matter how misguided their views might be on the issues, that at least Republicans would insist on candidates with the requisite education and experience to run for the offices they seek. It seems I was sadly mistaken. It's all about image for them, rather than substance.

Yep, thats a plus in my book. Lets take a look at how the "professional politicians" have done running this country. Ya know, people like Bush, Pelosi, Rove, that lot?
Not exactly glowing, is it? I'm sick of the professional politician and how they are owned by lobbiests.
I'd vote for Palin in a heartbeat, except for one small detail: I'd have to vote for McCain too.
What we need is the most amateur president we can get. In this case, it is Obama.

Sarah Palin was chosen to secure the vote of such people and it's not impossible that they could put McCain/Palin in the White House---to be followed in 2012 by Palin/God Help Us All. And yesterday, unless legislators are lying to us, these same folks influenced the world economic situation by scaring their elected representatives a month before a major election. Full disclosure: I am sickened to see our government and the world economy even slightly controlled by what I consider to be the worst element among our fellow-citizens: the most provincial, most bigoted, least-traveled, least-informed, least-educated. But I do not underestimate them. Go read their townhall posts and see what you think.

OK, Can you name two thankless, hard, PTA fights she has 'taken on and won.'?
The woman is a cipher, she is NOTHING, she has NOTHING!
She is no intellectual -as we already knew - but she's no 'fast learner' either! She is too stupid to know how much there is to know! She doesn't know there are lots of books in libraries, filled with information that has never passed her way - and never will. She is unaware of language, culture, the arts, economics. Her famous 'self confidence' is enabled by her not knowing how much there is to know! She seems to actually believe that she is qualified to deal with Russia because one can see Russia - not from her window, but - from an Alaskan island which she's NEVER VISITED!
She is no 'energy expert'!! She knows nothing about the big picture of energy independence, nothing about alternative energy sources on any level!
She's a shill for Alaskan oil and her husband apparently knows drilling. Neither is a geologist. She's not an oil trader. She's a 'booster', pimping for Alaskan oil and for continuing our oil dependence. She either doesn't know or doesn't want us to know that Alaskan oil except for the Alaskan taxes, will belong to the major, international oil companies and will be sold where the price is best. It's not 'ours'! It's not Alaska's! It will no more make us energy self sufficient than any other oil the majors own. The oil in ANWR is a thimble full against our needs. They propose to destroy ANWR because that light, sweet crude will keep the pipeline flowing all winter.
She's no reformer! In fact her history in governance is filled with malfeasance and scandal - AND she doesn't have much history! Her 'style' of governance in Alaska was Reaganesque - lazy, incurious, disengaged but always available for photo-ops! The 'rugged, independent' lifestyle of every Alaskan is supplemented by $8500 paid by the other U S taxpayers.
She's no saint! She's a lousy parent by any standard - and dammit who gets to say her kids are not to be scrutinized! She trotted them out with all their foibles, sins, shortcomings and as examples of her parenting skills. Upon a second look, they were examples of BAD parenting skills and systemic neglect!
While one of the ladies interviewed in the article says boldly (and incorrectly) that there are no scandals in Alaska, I guess that lady hasn't stood in line at the checkout counter lately. I learned all I want to know about her extra marital affair from the covers of the yellow journals there just last night!
She's no sportsman! She cares nothing for the concept of 'fair chase'. She apparently enjoys watching animals die and she does that arrogant, naive, Calvinistic good animal/bad animal thing - not even allowing that predators are a natural, essential, part of (as she sees it) 'God's creation'!
She's no patriot! Her agenda would clearly undermine the Constitution bringing us theocracy and 'bringing God and Christianity back into our schools'! She's greedy and power hungry as her foolish running mate and cares not at all for 'her country'!
Andrew Sullivan former Republican, conservative journalist, calls her 'a
farce and a joke'!

Somewhere, under all the wacky, delusional God-talk, a lot of right wing voters sense this. Note the comments on Kerry in the article. The Dems only have themselves to blame. If they actually went to bat for us on occasion they would split the right-wing populist vote off from the right-wing religious absolutist vote and smash the Repub coalition for the next generation.
That will happen when Robert Rubin gives away his fortune, takes a vow of poverty and works among starving refugees in Ethiopia or homeless junkies in NYC. I am not holding my breath

running pta is a good qualification towards running a country? give me a break! we may like and associate with these qualities but are they the reasons we elect people to represent the most powerful nation in the world? no wonder why we are in the mess that we are....
those who do not learn from the history are doomed to make the same mistakes and consequently deserve what they get! sadly to say, the very majority, who will decide the outcome of this election, will be the ones that will be harmed the most by their misjudgments as in case of this financial fiasco - but who is making the connections?
alas, thanks to our top-notch education system, we skipped the necessity to implement analytical thinking into our learning - so no one has to be left behind...

Some are saying that at the beginning of the Dem. Campaign Barrack Obama didn't know all of the material as well, but what is being left out is that Obama has a brilliant mind capable of depth and nuance that he's displayed throughout his life. Does the average person realize how difficult it is to get in to Harvard Law? Does the average person understand what the LSAT is and how high you'd have to score to be accepted? Or that Obama's score was probably in the top 5% of ALL lawyers who take the LSAT? It may seem a small point, yet I'm talking about the starting block. Barrack starts off with a mind that can open many doors that most of us could never open. Sarah Palin went to 5 or more (lower level) Colleges just to complete a four year degree in journalism... This doesn't make one confidant that Palin will do well with "on the job" training.
Palin is in way over her head. Not because of the media, but because of her total ignorance on vital subjects and her lack of depth and intelligence. I'm just an average mom of four. I too am honest, hate corruption, and I'm a Washington Outsider. I have held an executive director position with a million plus budget, yet, if someone asked me to be the VP, I would have the intelligence to first blink... and then think... and then recognize - for the good of this wonderful, hurting nation - that I wouldn't be the best choice. Ignorant people fool only themselves. Sarah's abilities are such a farce that when I hear her talk about nothing significant leading to no place informed it elicits compassion and empathy from this average mom who supported Hillary and is definitely voting Obama/Biden.

All these idiots (yes, yes, they are) supporting Palin think they could actually run this country. Most of them can't get through their days without help.
When will the Blue States cut the Red States loose? When will we quit paying extra taxes to support these losers? Yes, Red States you can't survive without out tax dollars, and we're sick of supporting you.

My Mom was one of the brightest people I have ever known. "Double promoted" twice, she was working at 17. It was during WW II, so the idea of college wasn't considered. She married my Dad and went from there with kids, work, and community/church work.
As I said, my mother was one of the brightest people I have ever known; but she wasn't ready to be Vice President. Perhaps, if her path had been different and it had been more modern times, she could have become ready. PTA, though, does almost no preparation for something as diverse and difficult as VP.
Had my Mom been named VP nominee by some idiotic Republican presidential candidate, though, I am relatively sure she would have turned it down. (BTW, she was a Republican, though Republicans weren't evil in those days.)
However, if she'd accepted it, she would have known more about world affairs, presidential politics, and our nation's monetary health BEFORE being trained by a bunch of folk to get her ready than Palin is doing now.
Palin is a pathetic excuse for a VP candidate. Funny thing is I kind of like her as a person, even though I'd disagree with 90% of what she seems to believe.
Let's all hope no one will remember her name after November 5.

Michelle Obama is a working mother. She balances her life, the campaign and her two beautiful daughters just fine thank you...but wait, she's BLACK! We can't possibly relate to HER! Michelle Obama grew up in a working-class home and worked hard to accomplish HER goals. Isn't she someone we'd want our daughters to emulate rather than "Caribou Barbie"?
Like I said before, Sarah Palin is affirmative action for dumb white people. She's totally unqualified and unprepared for the world stage and if Obama had the same qualifications (or lack thereof) these same people gushing effusive about the PTA would be screaming their heads off. She's a disgrace to women everywhere--feminist or not--and the sooner she gracefully steps down from a place she isn't ready for, the better. Kay Bailey Hutchinson, Olympia Snowe, Condeleeza Rice or even Peggy Noonan would have made a far better choice and one that we ALL could respect.
The reasons are getting lamer and lamer the closer we get to the debates. It's all about the poor little white woman needing "protection". So much for the hockey mom and being tough.

Running the PTA isn't shit. Running a town into the ground is. Raping your state's environment for the oil kickbacks is. You don't get to fuck up that bad by being stupid.
You do it by manipulating your city's and state's laws to bend to your will. For that you need brains higher than your G-string.
The oldest rule in warfare is 'If something is made to make you look down, you'd better look up,the sky is about to fall'. Same here. If someone is made to look stupid they might be Bush. He's talked like a dumbass for eight years and what happened while we were all looking at his idiocy? The war,$4 a gallon gas,
outragious food prices, utilities prices and the disguise of a weakened Wall St. Not bad for an Idiot. Just imagine what a 'ditz' could do.

I think that I need to break some news for you:
The President of the United States of America would NEVER have a beer with you. EVER, unless you are a billionaire or politician to serve him.
The Republican candidate for Vice President of the United States of America will NEVER go to church or carpool with you. EVER, unless you are useful to her campaign to achieve (undeserved) authority.
They are NOT like you, they don't care about you, although they pull it off convincingly, it seems. This is a business, and you are the merchandise and the consumer at the same time, only you sell yourself in exchange for your (and our) own demise.
Please see beyond the masks and the scripted words.
You are voting for them, for those values that they tell you they have, and you are believing them for what they say.
It doesn't matter if they have the preparation and intelligence (yes, the "I" word) to lead, the intellect to comprehend the complexities of the job, the knowledge to make decisions beyond changing diapers and signing for questionable small-time crookery and self enrichment , if they are adorable and "like us".
Ask your adorable president and VP candidate if they would (personally!) soothe your pain, alleviate your economic crisis, help you with your foreclosure, actually help you get back on your feet in any way. Right her, right now, not to pray for you but to act. Come one, give them a try.
If they ever pay attention to you, they will likely treat you with disdain, like a loser, or maybe use you for a photo-op if it serves their purpose (Actually, during electoral battles, they'll do anything.)
Grab a book and look at history, the internet is great to find out information, go to your library...
Please inform yourself beyond adorability, maverickyness, and other categories.
The superficiality of your judgment is extremely dangerous to the health of your co-Americans. Open your eyes to the reality of the identity of those who you support, they are the same people since the last 28 years...
Don't buy the bullshit, no, seriously. Don't
Thank you for reading this.

To be perfectly honest though, I don't exactly have a beauty pageant figure. I don't wear "cool" glasses, I hate wearing lipstick, and I've never hunted for anything other than my car keys or Easter eggs. (Did I mention I chaired our town's community Easter egg hunt?)
Alas, those things are cancelled out when I tell folks I can explain the Bush Doctrine, John McCain's voting record, and the fact that I have a decent knowledge of which countries are our allies, which ones are not, and the names of most of their leaders. Darn, I knew I should have concentrated more on that PTA gig. I've wasted too much time being concerned about silly things like Supreme Court decisions, and war, and the screwed up economy, and global warming, and how all of those trivial things will affect our future generations.
At least now, if I ever aspire to elective office, I'll know what not to include on my resume`. I certainly will not mention delivering Meals on Wheels, nor working on voter registration drives, nor helping to fix up the community recreation center, nor giving free tax advice to senior citizens, for I might run the risk of being labeled something so lowly as a community organizer.
If only I had known that leading the PTA, along with a good dose of vapidness, an ignorance of history, and the ability to multiply with abandon were the keys to success, I "coulda been a contender."

However, by that criterion, Mother Teresa was a total failure in life.
So it's not surprising that we are not capable of judging which candidate may be right for the country. I shutter to think what might happen, if this woman became our President.

Of course, they don't REALLY mean LITERALLY anybody...we're talking about "regular" citizens who have a deep love of and respect for Country, and who have a core sense of obligation to serve their Country.
That the Country of America can be run by ANY individual who has a strong moral compass, an unabiding desire to serve, is selfless, and can bring people together. In spite of the current resident of the White House's declaration that he is the "decider", the POTUS's job is to INSPIRE CONSENSUS.
Then, there's the second school of thought...and that school founded the Electoral College.
It's founding tenets were that the "typical" citizen would, with rare exception, be unable to keep abreast of the sheer avalanche of information needed by a President, and would thus by definition lack the appropriate "personal scope" to fulfill that role.
Part of the reason for that ideology, was that the technology of information dissemination was simply too primitive at the time of America's founding, to produce an informed-enough "common man" who could rise to the scope of President.
And today, I present the argument that this is STILL the case. In this article, I look at the quotes from the "Palin believers", and what I see are not reasoned responses, but regurgitations of standardized narratives.
(to be fair, I see exactly the same thing coming from large swaths of Obama supporters, but by-and-large, the standardized narratives of Obama supporters are of a different tenor...more nuance, more issue-based and more fact-based.)
So, I guess the conclusion is that, vast majorities of the voters, these 221-odd years on from our auspicious beginnings, are still utterly ill-equipped to rise to the global scope required to understand even the nature of the job of President, much less have informed opinions on specifics.
