Stewart on sequester: “Dems and Republicans would have to be incredibly incompetent not to avoid to be able to avoid this self-designed and imposed, mutual ball punch."

On last night’s Daily Show, Jon Stewart took on Congress’ failure to stop $85 billion in across-the-board spending cuts last Friday. He blames Congressional incompetence for the sequestration cuts “that will have real world implications for our nation’s neediest.”

“Democrats and Republicans would have to be incredibly incompetent not to avoid to be able to avoid this self-designed and imposed, mutual ball punch,” Stewart said. “It’s as likely as Dennis Rodman being our chief envoy to North Korea.”

The comedian noted that no one on the hill originally thought we’d end up here, playing clips of Senators John McCain and Tom Coburn explaining how easy it’d be to nullify the sequester.

“All they have to do is say ‘time out,’” Stewart said, invoking Coburn. “It was like they tied a belt around their neck, and then looped it over the shower curtain in the hopes that this pressure would heighten the sensation of getting something done.”

Later in the program, Stewart amended this graphic metaphor, saying “We’re the ones blacking out, while they’re all still jerking off.”
