Anthony Bourdain's Expert Tip for Tourists Is a Much-Needed Ode to the Working Class

"New York pizza is a unique, working-class, universal experience."

For the seventh year in a row, New York City has drawn a record number of tourists; 60 million by the end of 2016. 

That's nearly half as many people who voted in this year's presidential election. 

Fortunately, Anthony Bourdain, a native New Yorker and frequent tourist himself, has a great tip for first-time visitors.  

"Ask yourself what any traveler should ask going anywhere for the first time... especially if they have limited time, what do they do there that is unique to that place that they can inarguably do better than anybody else in the world?" he said. 

If you're tempted to seek out a fancy French restaurant for the two days you have here, the "Parts Unknown" host has just one question: "Why would you want to do that?"

"I'll tell you, we have good deli, we have better deli than you, so I would go to Russ & Daughters or Pastrami Queen or Katz's...get myself a good pastrami sandwich on rye with some sour pickles, Dr. Brown's cream soda. I'd get a toasted bialy or a good quality bagel with some nice smoked salmon on it and some cream cheese," he advised. 

The culinary guru is also a big fan of "utility pizza" and doesn't shy away from street meat. 

"Maybe it's not the best pizza in the world, but New York pizza is a unique, working-class, universal experience," Bourdain told TechInsider. 

"I like a dirty water hot dog as much as anybody else," he added.

According to Bordain, there aren't nearly enough food vendors. He's actively pushing to increase the number of carts, which he sees as an essential component of any metropolis.  

"There is nothing more vital to a city and a city’s health than good street food and more of it," Bourdain explained last month in a campaign video for Lift the Caps, which is spearheaded by the Urban Justice Center’s Street Vendor Project. "More permits, not less."
