15 Signs American Society Is Coming Apart at the Seams

I recently returned from a short trip to Europe. I was frankly astonished by the outpourings of good feelings that I encountered. I was actually effusively congratulated on the day that it was announced that Barack Obama had been awarded the Nobel Peace prize. I heard no awful comments that have become so typical here. There certainly appears to be for the first time in many years the idea that the USA is finally back on the right track and will finally rejoin the world community for peaceful equality. When I returned to the USA, I perused the numerous emails that had been accumulating. There were a total of fourteen from family members and so called close , long time friends. All and I do mean ALL had the same slimy tone. Openly disgustingly racist. Nasty, outrageously critical of everything the Obama government has done or attempted to accomplish. Totally disheartening and incredibly pessimistic. Just where are we headed?

The only problem is that the poor and working people are not a united front against rampant greed, wealth and abuse of power.

Those militias are misguided, uneducated, angry, mostly white males, who will most likely blame "liberals" for america's problems. They still suffer from the influential right-wing media delusions that the economic crisis is liberal politicians' fault, or that Obama, the first black president is a socialist who works for the corporate interests (an oxymoron) by bailing out Wall St. bankers.

I genuinely fear the retribution of the angry militias, but this is the crucible that we americans must pass through before we can settle the score with the rich. Keep your head low and pray for peace.

just don't get it. There is only so much water, gold, money, you name it, on this finite planet.

If someone has billions, the American ideal, many others will have less. By rejecting sharing and the common good and embracing greed and unlimited wealth for a few, Americans have created unmitigated disasters here and around the world.

It is hard to feel sorry for a people who lust after too much while wrecking the planet in the process.

There have been signs that American society was coming apart at the seams since Europeans first landed on this continent and tried to create a society. If America really was a society, there might be something to worry about, but since we're nothing but the grandest of granfalloons (see Kurt Vonnegut's book Cat's Cradle), there's not really much to worry about, or much we can do about it.

If history is our guide, you can bet that more mass slayings will occur in a lateral violence format. Militia groups will not attack Wall Street They will kill average citizens like the Ft Hood thing. The ruling elites will see to that. A real revolution needs a concerted value system not reactive politics.All the militias must see that all Americans are under the thumb of empire like the British. This is the second piece like this in 2 days. Somebody at Alternet is worried - and they're not the only ones: both pieces come from somewhere else.

My takeaway from the prescient Sara Robinson article I quoted was a key precondition: disappointment. Promise people "Change!", deliver squat. Or worse. During a serious social breakdown. No wonder they have all those troops learning counter-insurgency. How long would it take to bring them home?

The new point: these people are playing with matches and don't even know it. They're so insulated they have no idea what the people are experiencing - and yes, I do mean the Democrats.

Yes, times are bad and citizens are suffering the consequences of a Corportocracy that serves an elite class.

People are concerned there may be more crime if economic conditions worsen.

People have guns in this country because it is an explicit part of the Constitution. The reason it is there is because an unarmed citizenry are more easily bullied by a tyrannical government.

A government that hacks out legislation to appease various Corporate sponsers and special interest groups at the expense of the common welfare of the people is a government that does not represent citizens, and so is a government that practices taxation without representation.

It's only a short distance from tyranny.

These odd recurrent postings on Alternet that pair gun ownership with fanaticism seem to suggest that the thinking behind the bill of rights is wrong, citizens should be unarmed and reply on the intelligent rule of Donkets and Elephants.

This is a bit of condundrum because it is the Donkeys and Elephants that transferred all the wealth to the Corporate elite and assisted in the movement of the REAL economy, the production of goodsm to other countries.

Why doesn't alternate post some articles on solutions to the undoing of the economy rather than go after the remaining rights of citizens.

Congress and the corporations have screwed us for the last three decades and most Americans have been too anesthetized to notice. But now that millions are jobless, homeless, and hungry, and can't afford a higher education, they are finally paying attention. There will be more violence and I hope that people do not take out their frustrations on family and friends. They need to go to the source of the problems: CEOs and the boards of multinational corporations and banks, lobbyists, and both state and federal politicians who say one thing while doing another. The amount of taxpayer money that is stolen or wasted is staggering. We all could have health care and paid-for homes if we weren't supporting two unnecessary wars and a stupefying military budget. If things do come to an end in 2012, I hope it is the fall of the empire. By then we're either going to have a second American revolution or the storming of the Bastille. I prefer the latter. Things are so bad in this country that I, a law-abiding social liberal, would probably join up with the crazy Repub wingnuts. From what I'm reading a hell of a lot of people feel the same way. And that's why Congress should be shaking in its boots.

I commented a number of times on various sites, about the methods by which the stimulus package's were distributed & it now becoming evident that the government only think they know best. If the stimulus had been put into the middle class, instead of the elite, the situation would have been much different. Obama still persists to give money to other countries & I can only wonder where in the world this money is coming from because the poulation is just about devastated.

The United States is a snake eating its own tail. Pretty soon it will run out of tail (!) and consume its way to the head.

Whilst there is a lot of obvious extreme conspiracy nonsense about it, there is also some extremely well researched information, right from the original scientific source, that it is almost completely useless at providing any protection against disease...

Oh and also, the story about Baxters contaminating a batch of 72kg of the material destined for mass vaccination of many thousands, is almost certainly true, because the company has admitted it.

Of course that doesn't mean, that the flu jab currently being given to millions of kids will kill them, but it is highly unlikely to be beneficial in any way.

This video lasts for 55 minutes. If your attention span cannot last any longer than the time between adverts on "Lost" then take the Flu jab instead. The World IS overpopulated with stupid people.

People here and on every other blog and site with commentary at the end are all saying the same thing- things suck, its been 30 years of exploitation, the repugnicans suck. The democrats suck. Independents suck. Nobody is listening...

Are we at the point yet where we're going to stop bitching and start DOING something? Things will not get better until somebody stops bitching and starts moving. Instead of talking about how bad things suck (no shit, sherlock) why don't we start throwing around some ideas on how we come to a viable solution to the problems? Not arguing politics for the sake of arguing politics or history or policy changes... REAL solutions that the average joe or jane can actually do that makes a real and notable difference? And I don't mean calling for a boycott on some multinational company or starting an email campaign to the local sellout politician who represents the corporate interests of his geographic area- REAL action that gets things moving. People are ready for a REAL change- that's obvious from every post you can read- and just impotently talking about it doesn't solve anything. Does anyone have a plan? Does anyone have an idea that works?

If you do, its about time to mention it.

This "financial crisis" is most ademently not just some enormous blunder nor is it the unfortunate allignment of a series of smaller "mistakes" such as the repeal of Glass-Steagall, the (intentional)inflating of the housing bubble, the unprecedentedly low prime rate under Greenspan, the Congressional encouragement of "outsourceing middle-class jobs, the de-industrialization of America, the "free-trade" agreements, etc. ad infinitum. This has ALL been planned for decades. And President Obama is in on it and he is aiding and abeting it.

In 1968 Prof. Domhoff of Univ. of Calif., Santa Cruz (prof. of Political Science) wrote in his book, Who Rules America, that some of the financial elites (that had run the country over the cliff in '29) were livid with FDR for ennacting the "New Deal" and they had vowed to take "their" country back. It took them some 70 years but it is happening now. Suddenly, Alex Jones doesn't seem quiet the "wacko nut job" that he used to be....

If anyone is interested, check Prof. Michel Chossudovsky(spelling may be slightly off) at the U. of Ottawa. He publishes at globalresearch.com. He understands what is happening as well as anyone.

polls show that voters increasingly back the conservative policies responsible for the trends discussed in the article..with so-called "independent" voters jumping onto the bandwagon in droves...based on that..its prolly safe to assume that theres no explosive revolution in the cards anytime soon...far from unravelling..mainstream american society seems to be coalescing around these trends...

OTOH..this electorate will almost certainly install a hard-core neo-fascist govt in 2012 (not to mention a veto-proof conservative congress in 2010).. and i doubt very much whether the country could survive that...

Exaggeration seems to be the new normalcy in this society, and instead of trying to retain a bit of objectivity, journalists seem to be hopping on the exaggeration bandwagon and seeking to pronounce the latest and greatest hyperbole ever. Please, put a sock in it!

Your statement, for example, that "Millions upon millions of Americans are poor, broke, struggling, starving, desperate… and armed." is ludicrous and silly. Even were Americans to "lose" 80 percent of their money (or wealth), they'd still be eating and living better than 80 percent of the people in the world. We have numerous governmental and voluntary support systems to provide food, medical care, extra money, and other things to people. No one is starving. No one is desperate. This is just bunk.

Yes, the empire is crumbling, but we can still afford two trillion-dollar wars, trillion-dollar stimulus bills for the wealthy, trillion-dollar so-called health insurance systems, and trillions more in totally wasted and unnecessary expenditures to keep warm bodies obese, overly comfortable, and inebriated with junk TV and other entertainment.

I am talking about musicians who play in front of around 100 people in a little pub on a Saturday night, and I get talking to them - often I haven't a clue who they are...

And I no longer think it is bullshit, when they tell me that next Saturday they have got another gig...

At this point, the most appalling thing is that no one in government will do the right thing, which is turn right around and start addressing the inequities by confiscating the obscene profits of Goldman and others via high taxation, and turning around and giving it to all of those who have suffered the most under "supply side" economics. As if one side supplied everything to begin with.

That supply side is a bogus concept has been exposed by the failure of this economy. You cannot concentrate nearly all of the wealth in so few hands, and then proceed to falsely inflate assets such as housing, college educations, and everything else, while depressing wages and throwing people out of work, and expect to have consumers able to participate.

What we need to do is empower consumers with real money in their hands - then they will go out and buy things and there will be a demand for businesses again. That's how you create jobs. It is symbiosis, not destruction of an entire class of people, that makes a society run well.

Meanwhile this is a failed state in every way, morally, and fiscally, with obscene wealth doing nothing for the rest of us (unlike we have been told it was going to do). The emperor has no clothes. And many have no food, housing or power. No one at the top is listening, to their detriment. No one is brave enough to say enough to the supply siders and tax them into oblivion (which is what they deserve). After all, the opposite policies in which they were way undertaxed and coddled certainly did not create jobs, did it? And we are getting no regulation of the market as should be done and no real help. It truly is a failed state and I fear what will become of us....only an uprising may beat down supply side for good, which would a start. The next step and most important, would be to become morally focused again on humanism, not rogue capitalism and the accumulation of obscene levels of wealth.

I have to agree with most of what I am seeing here.
Unfortunately the new administration seems to be following the same path as those of the last 30 years. I consider Obama a trogan horse. He misrepresented his affiliations during the campaign.

I think we have to begin to acknowledge though that with Mexico, Central America, and parts of south America exporting their poverty to our country in mass each year that some of the State financial problems and permanent underclass may be beyond our ability to address. This doesn't even begin to touch the issue of a cash economy the leaves many state services to be paid for by the citizens working and paying taxes for everyone's state services, whether education or whatever. I suspect the same is true for medical premiums.
No doubt the wealthy are the happy recipiants of this trend, but we had better address the flood of immigration along if we want employment, education, and health issues ever to be resolved in this county. Immigration increasingly is becoming a matter of economical suicide for our nation.

The government is corrupt. It wages disposable income wars until all of our national treasure is gone. It allows an enormous gap between rich and poor. Worse, it lets the poor randomly die in 100 ways, from no jobs or from terrible jobs, from no health care, from no food, from no shelter in the winter, from sugar diabetes, from industrial cancer, from artificial artery goo. In a society where robots can make our cars, this massive killing is intolerable.

This is not the government for the people or by the people. That means it no longer governs the people.

From our national gathering place, the Internet, and from our local living rooms, we shall slowly and painfully form governments of the people through trial and error, or better yet, through the inventions of many farsighted people.

In a million small humanitarian experiments we shall pull the work force into our own soup kitchens, and then into our own work cooperatives, and then all of our people will have jobs, shelter, food, and healthcare. A few ideologues can go live in the corporate America desert, we won't mind.

Then we demand rights from state legislatures and then Congress the tried and true way, by installing our guys and tossing out deadwood. Every time that we make Congress truly afraid, not of a silly mob riot at a town hall meeting, but of actual de-election, they give the people something.

Then we reform elections so that Halliburton-led coalitions can't buy Congress with campaign donations.

That is what it's called when there is ultra rich and ultra poor and it helps no one to have a society where some profit enormously while others suffer. What about the enormous profits accrued to Billionares we worship. What about all the money going into bases, wars, defense contracts, cost plus contracts for companies going off-shore to reduce taxes And remember some of the better days when taxes were cut rather than storing up for bad days ahead. Well maybe those days weren't so good either but giving the taxes back may have been a mistake. Perhaps it has been gettting worse ever since the Cold War became a perpertual drain. Both member of the nuclear family having to work to stay even, credit cards siphoning off part of every sale, lobbyist everywhere and full time campaigning and spending , more amnd more advertising that we pay for in the products and in the cable bills both. Meaning way too many middlemen trying to make a living too.

Though much has been written and spoken about the pro's and con's of capitalism, the one flaw that is hardly ever mentioned is the equation of expansion than underpins all economic theory, and therefore all of capitalism - that there is no limit to industrial expansion. This fatal flaw is what will change the politics of nations and ensure unprecedented turmoil in the very near future.

The world is hitting against the limits to growth that geography and geology exibited just prior to the World Financial Collapse, and, the trickle-down theory of wealth distribution is anathema to a world in termimal resource decline. America is in a far worse position than less wealthy countries as transport and the transport of goods comes under increasing stress with the decline of available cheap fuels, and it will only get worse.

The transfer of wealth to the top tier of American society has not produced any credible industrial growth as the wealthy try to insulate their assets from depreciation by hoarding more assets. This is not only not helpful to them it does little for anyone else either. Something will give and a well-armed public short of shelter and food will revolt enmass once the spark hits the gunpowder.

There is little that authorities can do to stave off the ineveitable, but, I have noticed that a lot has been written lately regarding the legalisation, or decriminalisation, of marijuana. The arguments have often been for the added taxable industry that such a measure would ensure, but I wonder that possibly an ulterior motive lies behind the sudden interest. A stoned citizen is less likely to resort to violent measures, perhaps...

One thing is certain, the powers are worried and when the powers are worried we should all be worried.

A five tier system of pay with doctors and people involved in making living conditions better for all, engineers, scientists, health researhers, and so on, getting the highest pay in points at the top.
CEOs and managerial would be 2nd or 3rd tier.
Skilled labor would be 4th tier.
Unskilled labor would be 5th tier.
But even those in the bottom tier would get enough "points" to live decent lives. Not like minimum wage is now, where people barely get by.
Of course everyone would still have to work.
That would be the only way you could earn points.
It would not be a credit system.
Points would be paid the same no matter where you lived.
Why make people suffer needlessly and put them through another Great Depression.
This is just an idea that might stave off the madness brought on by money.
Of course people would be able to keep whatever money they have now with one dollar equaling one point.

Unraveling is definitely what's happening, as this article well points out. And it'll continue yet. For those older than about 30-years-old, as I definitely am: we all fell for it. Reagan/Thatcher were a hugely popular phenomenon back then in the '80's, and whatever side we were on (or claim now to be on), it is amply evident that the overwhelming tide was in their favor. There is still today an overwhelming preference for their basic philosophies and perspectives in regard to culture, economics, politics -- every aspect of our very living. In a word: we're still unraveling, and it ain't over yet.

The good and the bad travel together, as do the real and the unreal, the image and its grand variety of signifieds.

As I recall in one of S. Amin's books I read a while ago, he mentioned a truism that is quite appropriate to the actual operation and functioning of capitalism: assimilation happens simultaneously with exclusion. These are the "gaps" we're now seeing between those up in that "1-5%" and the rest of us; that sort of vacuum and "empty space" that separates us.

It is what it is. The tumor has wholly absorbed the organism it grew in. It is indeed, as GWH Bush uttered so gleefully in those days when the Berlin-wall collapsed: it's a "new world order". In that order, a whole lot of us are, simply, expendable and fungible throw-aways.

The have-nots will ultimately say: “that’s enough”. When that happens they will simply take what they need and want, leading to a temporary state of anarchy, for which the military, including troops from NATO, Canada, and Europe will be here.

It will dwarf Patrick Swayze and the Red Dawn movie.The largest standing army in the world is not China, but the army of civilians (Americans) who own weapons, particularly in the South who have long been saying “were keeping our powder dry”.

They have long held the Civil War was less about slavery, as it was against Yankee bankers in the Industrial North.

For them, the war is still not over, because that war was rooted in (the old big money of America) meaning nothing has changed, except this time the have’s with the old & new money, has left the social and financial fabric of this country in shambles, and FOX News is blazing the trail as a Paul Revere to mobilize the effort.

These self-proclaimed patriots will demand nothing short of a restoration of what was once a Constitutional Republic with a bill of rights that has teeth in it, which has all but disappeared through an evolution of erosion under the names of Rendition, the Patriot Act and a complicit U.S. Supreme Court that put the final nail in the coffin of this once proud Republic.

The war on terror was to manipulate public opinion to implement a stronger more perverse structural framework for the police state apparatus to dictate more control of its citizens (the real Nazi’s) that actually began with the cultural change that took place during the 1960’s with the Hippie movement and the so called war on drugs.

Those who implemented this (The American Ruling Class) were quite aware that given the wealth that would be hijacked by old and new American money in the names of NAFTA and GAT would ultimately lead to the financial crisis of 2008 and the eventual backlash of an armed citizenry of have-nots who will take it back by force.

Something that was quite predictable and repeated throughout mans history many times, when greed, corruption and the withering away of its social fabric and value system of integrity and humble humanity become lost.

It should not be lost on us, when some years back a high level memo was sent out to commanders in our armed forces to get a pulse on how the rank and file troops would feel about conducting armed incursions into American neighborhoods to confiscate weapons and round up dissidents in large numbers. They don't send out surveys like that as make work for idle time.

They have a need for that information for a reason... Do tell its coming, the writing has been on the wall since the 1980’s when Reagan gutted the unions, and technologies with policy implementation fueled the phenomenon of leveling the global division of labor (globalization) that has all but destroyed the skilled trades of our workforce. This has in turn forced the female half of the typical male female relationship with kids to enter the workforce to make up for the shrinking value of the dollar against stagnant wages when the average working husband made enough to support a family.

Couple that with NAFTA and GAT where so much of former American labor tasks are now outsourced to former third world countries to remain competitive in the global marketplace when faced with paying an American here say 10 to 20 bucks an hour versus paying some Chinaman, Indian, Philippino, labor force $1.75 an hour, and you end up with the American workforce being cut out of the action unless your willing to take an enormous pay cut, which would not even pay your rent in a ghetto in LA.

Game over American Workforce the transformation to maintain healthy communities will take on a whole new paradigm of local resource communes to survive.

So nice to see all the proposed solutions instead of just bitching about what we already know.

The statement about "American's are arming themselves to the teeth" needs some explanation. Firstly, only legal gun owners can do that. Secondly, WHICH Americans are doing it and who has how much? I would personally think it is the giant corporations who fear having to pay taxes or be regulated. They can then give them to all their employees.

What I am most worried about is if all this ammunition buying is JUST because of what Obama said in Pittsburgh and HR 45, then what is going to happen when the demand goes away and the ammunition is worthless, especially to the people who spent their life savings on it? They can't sell it back to the dealers who won't want it so they will sell it to the highest bidder, either legally or illegally. Kind of the same way our federal government works.

OK, so it looks a little gloomy, but the important thing is that no matter how bad things get, we have been saved from the horror of welfare dependency. In fact, there is no entitlement to need-based aid whatsoever. A part of our celebrated welfare reform policies consists of financial incentives to states to keep caseloads below the target number. You might or might not be turned away.

Granted, some do die because of these policies, but we're willing to make that sacrifice to ensure continued funding for our serial wars and for corporate "tax relief". These priorities are what make America what it is today.
