More Evidence That Marijuana Prevents Cancer

New study finds that marijuana smokers have a lower risk of head and neck cancers.

Among the more interesting pieces of news that came out while I was on vacation the first half of August was a new study in the journal Cancer Prevention Research, which found that marijuana smokers have a lower risk of head and neck cancers than people who don’t smoke marijuana. Alas, this important research has been largely ignored by the news media.

While this type of study cannot conclusively prove cause and effect, the combination of this new study and existing research — which for decades has shown that cannabinoids are fairly potent anticancer drugs — raises a significant possibility that marijuana use is in fact protective against certain types of cancer.

A team of researchers from several major universities conducted what is known as a “case-control” study, comparing patients who had squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth, larynx, and pharynx with control patients matched for age, gender, and residence location who did not have cancer. By looking at matched groups with and without cancer, researchers hope to find patterns indicating risk or protective factors. In this case they focused on marijuana use, but also took into account known risk factors for this type of cancer, including tobacco and alcohol use.

After adjusting for those confounding factors, current marijuana users had a 48% reduced risk of head and neck cancer, and the reduction was statistically significant. Former users also had a lower risk, though it fell short of being significant. The investigators crunched the numbers several different ways — for example, by amount of marijuana used or the frequency of use — and the findings stayed the same nearly across the board, with moderate users showing the strongest and most consistent reduction in cancer risk.

The scientists write, “We found that moderate marijuana use was significantly associated with reduced risk HNSCC [head and neck squamous cell carcinoma]. The association was consistent across different measures of marijuana use (marijuana use status, duration, and frequency of use).”

Strikingly, among drinkers and cigarette smokers, those who also used marijuana reduced their cancer risk compared to those who only drank and smoked cigarettes. So marijuana may actually have been countering the known bad effects of booze and cigarettes.

This another reason marijuana should be legalized for personal use, to keep it squashed and to continue to vilify it as a gateway drug, when studies show that alcohol is more of a gateway drug and tobacco companies and the alcohol industries, do not want millions of consumers leaving there products sitting on the selves unsought, and ignored there are far more people killed every year by alcohol and tobacco and not to mention all the treatment facilities who would lose a large chunk of money to this harmless drug, and in my honest opinion it makes one more creative and causes one to think about the problems of the world today. A lot of people have been so misinformed over the years that they still believe the lies that are put up by our government and the religious leaders(Reefer Madness,1937) how you will become a drug crazed killer, and will cause white women to consort in lewd manners with black,Hispanic, native americans, the main reason was so Aslinger could keep his boys on the payroll after the repeal of alcohol Prohibition and marijuana suited there needs just fine, and the fact that everyone can grow it themselves if they wanted to, Racism played a big part in it's prohibition if you do not believe me Google for yourselves for the true facts and why it was demonized, and made illeagal by our government!

From the safer website I linked before. The MSNBC poll results are impressive, 86.9% say yes, only 7.3% say no, another 5.8% are not sure.

There are also comments, sorted by how the person voted. The comments against, No. Legalizing pot would create too many problems. are illuminating.

MSNBC has the racist, "Hell no! If they do, throw up a fence around them and give them back to Mexico." posted prominently on their results page. Wow, that is how they feel about California.

I was more impressed with the "This is a tired debate. It is initiated by potheads. Why do we dignify this with a debate at all?" and "This crap is so addictive and ruining lives. What's next? Legalizing child porn?" remarks.

This data is useful for people like me who actually want to counter the inane arguments. Now I know what we are working against.

I would hope the lawyers would take note too.

I don't like having my religion compared to child porn. That sounds like that person has a twisted idea of religion. What religion are they? I would like to know.

They are, in fact, persecuting my people. Potheads deserve civil rights.

Isn't it sad now that we know all this that George successfully, as far as I know, quit smoking cannabis, but temporarily returned to cigarette smoking. If only he knew the truth about these plants he could still be here with us, maybe, anyways.

By now we've heard of much scantily developed evidence which has indicated this anti-tumor phenomenon over and over again....yet it always raises barely a peep. It is largely ignored and swept under some carpet.
With the 'War on Cancer' in its 27th year, and after $105 billion spent to ensure us that "we will cure cancer in your lifetime"....one wonders why it is taking so long.
Maybe the declaration I heard so often as a child: "We want to cure cancer in your lifetime" really meant "We (the cynical medical-industrial complex) want to make as much money off you suckers with cancer in your lifetime", would be more blunt, terse, & truthful.

Besides our inability to accept the concept of CBD's (cannabinoids) as having tumor-inhibiting value, we are also faced with another question far afield from marijuana, THC, and CBD's.
Although we've spent $105 billion on cancer research from 1972 - 2008, we spent well over $100 billion in just a few short years fighting a war in Iraq over oil, real estate, and 9/11 revenge.
Surely you can see the irony and absurdity in all this !!

If big pharma could patent it, it would be legalized in a minute. Problem is, though it's useful, the benefits are so well known that there's nothing 'new or inventive'. No novelty, inventiveness, no patent. No benefit to big pharma, no legalization. What could be more threatening to powerful big pharma than a widely available, medically useful substance that's out of its control. It won't happen. No lobby except the citizenry, and we know how powerless they are.
