Montel's Mission

By Betsy Rothstein, The Hill. Posted May 13, 2005.

The talk show host discusses his support for medical marijuana, the psychic Sylvia Browne, and how to get a meeting on Capitol Hill.

Montel Williams was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis in 1999. Since then, the TV talk-show host has tried a variety of drugs -- everything from morphine to Vicodin -- to ease the constant pain he feels in his lower extremities.

The drug that has proved most effective for Williams is marijuana, which is why he paid a visit to Capitol Hill recently on behalf of the Marijuana Policy Project.

Williams was on the Hill to try to persuade lawmakers to pass bills pertaining to medicinal marijuana, such as the States' Rights to Medical Marijuana Act, which allows patients who have recommendations from their doctors in California and nine other states where the medical form of the drug is legal, to grow marijuana without fear of arrest. This was Williams' third visit to Capitol Hill. So far, he has met with a total of eight lawmakers. He lives in Manhattan.

Williams sat down with The Hill's Betsy Rothstein on May 4 at a Marijuana Policy Project reception at the Washington Court Hotel. He wore a sleek black suit, black shirt and black tie and had his share of bling -- a diamond watch, a shiny black bracelet and diamond and gold earrings in both earlobes.

What do you hope to accomplish here?

Montel Williams: Hopefully these bills will be passed. I think it's an exercise in futility, but we'll continue to do exercises in futility until they get passed. We have to stop looking at this through propagandized eyes.

Propagandized eyes?

There has been a 70-year propagandized effort to taint something that is a viable medication.

How do lawmakers react to you?

Every meeting I walk out of, someone tells me I have changed their mind. I'll continue to peck away at this one lawmaker at a time.

How are you faring with your condition?

I'm in pain 24 hours a day. I have MS, and MS doesn't have me. I work at it very hard every day.

Does the marijuana help alleviate some of the pain?

Absolutely, where other pain medications don't. I don't get a euphoric feeling from it. I would have to consume a lot for that to happen.

How much marijuana do you smoke a day?

About one gram.

Where do you get your marijuana?

I don't like to discuss that.

Sylvia Browne, the psychic, is a regular guest on your show. What does she say will happen to you and to your efforts to legalize medicinal marijuana?

She was just on the show yesterday. Sylvia feels that my efforts are going to bring about a cure in the next five years.

Do you think she's right?

This year alone she has been accurate on a whole bunch of things.

Have any lawmakers refused to meet with you?

Not yet, I haven't had any one who has refused.

Did you know that some refused to meet with Irv Rosenfeld [one of seven Americans who are allowed by law to use federally provided marijuana]?

I laugh because I find it so asinine. How would a member of Congress refuse to meet with a man they provided medicine to? It's ludicrous. Every member of Congress should meet with him and say, "Hey, how is the medication working?"

So you use your stardom to secure meetings with members.

Absolutely, I have. Some of them, their staffers watch me. Their schedulers watch me. If I could be considered legitimate on my show, I should be considered legitimate on this.

So what do you think of President Bush?

I believe strongly that he is 100 percent convinced that every plan he puts forth will work. I don't think anyone is perfect. He speaks his mind. I remember distinctly being on the streets of New York on Sept. 23, 24, 25 [of 2001]. There wasn't an American alive who wasn't begging for some retribution. Do I now have my own opinion about what should happen? Heck, yeah. But he is trying his damnedest, and I appreciate his leadership.

Did you vote for him?

The Constitution gives me the right to not say who I voted for.

Where is the Bush administration on medicinal marijuana?

They are against it. I would like to sit down with him [Bush] and talk with him about medicinal marijuana. He is against it because he believes the garbage about how it doesn't work. I'll bet he does not know that the federal government distributes marijuana.

Digg!

All we have is a self-serving black republican who likes a pathololical lying weenie of a man to stand up for medical pot for the rest of us? Don't expect any thing positive to come out of Montel's efforts. You'd think that smoking pot would have given him his soul back, but I guess it doesn't happen to everyone.

Associating with huckster Sylvia Browne as if she were anything legitimate cannot do Williams's cause any good, linking him inevitably with other phoney fare such as crystals and PSI. If I were a congressman, I would be far less inclined to take hin seriously knowing that he keeps such company.

Whew! The last two comments were so much an attack against the messenger I just had to draw everyone’s attention to their prejudice, ignorance, bigotry and nonsense. Neither commented on marijuana as medicine but simply dismissed the messenger. May both of you get MS and have to turn to pot for relief.

Montel Williams, regardless of his affiliation with psychics and whatnot, adds a tremondous amount of credibility to the medical marijuana and legalization movement. He is a retired Naval Officer, compassionate and intelligent and has the wherewithall to keep politics out of his agenda...the fact that he is a celebrity provides a very large audience for his message and the ability to meet with elected officials. Of course he's not going to bad mouth the very people he wants to reach out to. He spoke at my high school when he was still in the Navy and I totally respected what he had to say then and I have great admiration for his convictions.

Montel is right on the money when it comes to his noble efforts to legalize cannabis for medical reasons. Don't most civilized nations already do this? To do otherwise lacks compassion and humanity for those suffering with many illnesses. Where Montel lost me, however, were with his misguided comments pertaining to the international war criminal known as GW Bush. First of all, Dubya has NO mind! He is the product of corporations and Karl Rove's and Dick Cheney's puppet. Most offensive, however, were Montel's assumptions that most Americans wanted revenge and retribution. Millions of Americans like myself and even many families of 9/11 victims wanted no further bloodshed to avenge the wrongs of a few. As we know violence perpetuates violence as we vividly see in the Middle East. Bush and America have become the #1 terrorist and rogue nation. A sad irony of the largest military-industrial complex in the world that spends more on defence than all nations combined! Aside from that comment, I wholeheartedly support and applaud Montels humanistic work both on his TV show and off. He is a true humanitarian and I pray his efforts bear fruit for the thousands of suffering souls he advocates for. Keep up the great work, Montel! And you too, Sylvia!

Will anyone understand that is in power?

I'm a chronic pain patient that is 52 years old and I would love myself to talk to all that is in power. I have written to President Bush and to my Senator's in my state since 2002 and that's all I get is a run around. Yes, they will listen to what you have to say and they seem to understand why I use Marijuana but that is it. I just wish that they had my pain for one day and I'll bet anything if they had a choise of Morphine or Marijuana which do you think they would pick? I also think they should have several meetings with the chronic pain patients that use Marijuana before they have the right to vote on this issue. I can only think that the reason why it is illegal is because of money it provides to the DEA and the courts and god know who else benefits from Marijuana. I just hope one day these people in power puts a stop to arresting the ill and worry about more important issues that this country should be concerned about.

Having MCS (multiple chemical sensitivity) and having written to him twice with absolutely no reply, I now no longer have any sympathy for this man.

I face this situation almost entirely on my own thanks to doctors not believing MCS exists. This also applies to Gulf War Syndrome and Agent Orange and many with ME/fibromyalgia also face the same situation.

I also highly doubt that Montel faced the daunting PR against us from: Stephen Barret (Quackwatch), Ronald Gots (ESRI), Elizabeth Whelan, Elaine Showalter (English Professor), Steven Milloy (Cato Institute/Fox News/Junk Science, Michael Fumento (Hudson Institute), John Stossel (Give Me a Break) and Simon Wessley (psychiatrist in England) who worked with both the Pentagon and Elaine Showalter.

These people did a thorough character assasination and as I said, I highly doubt Montel is facing this and believe me, I wrote quite a few people regarding this and by the time doctors don't believe this exists and with all this PR, usually anybody with MCS, Gulf War Syndrome, Agent Orange, ME and fibromyalgia have had to take different routes to try to solve their illness with usually virtually no support whatsoever from their families. Many in this group were outright ostrasized or belittled by their own families who should be supporting them and they lose their jobs, their friends, are often unable to do the things they used to enjoy and then the treatment of their families tends to rub salt into the wounds.

So no, I have no sympathy for him anymore and I will just keep plodding along and hope that eventually a miracle will happen (but I won't hold my breath on that one any time soon)

this congress is so screwy they won't even provide the funding to allow the residents of Washington DC to count their own votes on a legitimate ballot issue concerning medical marijauna. Now I ask you, is this real democracy when elected officials actually conspire to stop the people from counting their votes? If your congressman voted for this horsechit he's a "true" patriot.(named the Barr amendment) An estimate released thought the peoples vote would go something like 67% pro-pot. Since the people voted yes the congress votes no. Oh what the Hell it's not their constiuents, right? As a sick person who needs medicine it would be nice to know if "caught" by the authorities maybe I wouldn't have to go to jail. Anyone who reads the TRUE history of cannabis will be surprised at how well 75 years of propaganda has demonized a weed which flowers in your mind. 700,000 arrests per year (89% for possession). It is MADNESS...........welcome to America of the 21st century

Why is this even an issue? Those who disagree{which is their right } choose not to answer why the govt. distributes marijuana and its ok? Until then, they have no valid argument.
