Marijuana Is Real Medicine

By Paul Krassner, Huffington Post. Posted October 2, 2008.

The stories of the medicinal properties of pot will blow you away.

Dying to Get High: Marijuana as Medicine is an important and accessible book -- not heavy on academic jargon, but rather lively and engaging, like a true detective novel -- with a broad appeal to those interested in the medical potential of cannabis, an end to the drug war and grass roots activism. I asked the co-authors, Wendy Chapkis and Richard Webb, how working on the book changed them.

WENDY CHAPKIS: "I certainly was one of those people who thought that 'medical marijuana' was probably mostly a way for Americans to get around ridiculously punitive drug laws. It seemed like a reasonable strategy to me. But the very first time I walked into a WAMM [WoMen's Alliance for Medical Marijuana] membership meeting, looked around the room and saw people who were ghostly white and frail, people in wheelchairs, people huddled in small groups talking about a WAMM member who needed round the clock care, I realized that medical marijuana was no 'ruse.' These were very ill people. And, as I started doing interviews, the stories of the medicinal properties of pot blew me away.

"I wasn't the only one surprised to discover that marijuana did in fact have therapeutic effects. Many patients were equally astonished. Like me, they had been recreational users who appreciated the pleasurable effects of marijuana and were suspicious of the claim that the herb was medicine. Then they started chemotherapy, for example, found themselves fighting off non-stop nausea, took a hit and the nausea disappeared. Or they had intolerable nerve pain from multiple sclerosis, AIDS or post-polio syndrome, used some cannabis tincture and the pain quieted down. It was funny how surprised we all were that it really worked.

"I think this shows how effective drug-war propaganda really is. Even (or maybe especially) people who are very familiar with marijuana are prepared to believe that it doesn't really work as a medicine. Of course, since the discovery of the cannabinoid receptor system in the body (and the production of endogenous cannabinoids), scientists haven't been at all surprised at the medical properties of the plant -- which I guess helps explain why the feds have been so reluctant to allow any scientific research.

"In any case, this research really transformed my understanding of the effects of cannabis -- including enriching my understanding of the therapeutic effects of the so-called 'high.' The chapter on the high is one of my favorites because I think even the medical marijuana movement tends to downplay the psychoactive properties of the drug. They talk a lot about relief of ocular pressure, anti-nausea properties and the effect of cannabis on AIDS-wasting and relief of neuropathic pain, but there is very little discussion of the ways in which the psychoactive effects contribute to a sense of wellness for those who are seriously ill. And that is no small thing."

RICHARD WEBB: "Working with the WAMM has, indeed, been a transformative experience. I have learned a great deal, and formed some of the most cherished and important relationships of my lifetime, but perhaps the most profound change for me has been the development of a new awareness of the importance of compassion and forgiveness. Two events epitomize the many experiences that led to this change.

"The Gay Pride festival in San Francisco has been one of WAMM's most successful annual fundraising events. One year, I was working T-shirt sales, and when I turned my back for a moment, someone in the crowd stole a pile of shirts. Angry at the perpetrators and embarrassed about my carelessness, I told Valerie Corral, WAMM's executive director, about it, and all she said was, 'Well, let's hope they get a good price for them, because they must need the money very badly." Val's forgiveness was like an epiphany, a moment I will never forget. It was as if a lifetime of blame and resentment had been lifted from my heart, and I became suddenly aware of the deep suffering that drives some people to behave badly.

"When I began my research on WAMM, one of the first people I got close to was an HIV patient named John Taylor. As a result of his illness, John was desperately poor and physically debilitated, but he retained a sense of humor and joie de vivre that made him a pleasure to be around. We eventually became best friends, and when at last John's struggle against the disease became futile, I turned my living room into a hospice facility and, with the assistance of many WAMM members -- most of whom were trying to manage their own devastating ailments -- I was able to provide John with a safe and comfortable place to live out his final ten weeks.

"These experiences, and many others of a similar nature, have almost completely altered my view of the world, my sense of who I am, and my beliefs about what is most important in life."

Meanwhile, Barack Obama promises he would curb federal enforcement on state medical marijuana suppliers. John McCain has actually ridiculed patients who pleaded for more compassionate policies.

US Patent 6630507 - Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants
US Patent Issued on October 7, 2003

Abstract
Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to
NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids
useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation
associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and
autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular
application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological
damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the
treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease,
Parkinson's disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such
as cannabidoil, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid
toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses
useful in the method of the present invention. A particular disclosed
class of cannabinoids useful as neuroprotective antioxidants is formula
(I) wherein the R group is independently selected from the group
consisting of H, CH3, and COCH3.

Can we get past the "marijuana" frame and focus on the 26000 industrial uses of Cannabis?

This article is exactly what the social rightwing wants. They want to protect the vested Big Business interests directly responsible for bankrolling the ban so that they could RIG the market and not face any real competition. Rural America wouldn't be in the wrecked status it has been for the past 50 years were Cannabis not banned and Big Oil not dominating by now. Even a small oil business in Oklahoma faces ripoffs from a Big Oil company.

Why You can't Have Marijane

Big Pharma wants all the Marijuana and all of its' medical properties and derivitives all to itself. So it can sell it all to you at the whopping price it wants to sell it to you for. And that is why the Federal Government won't let you have any. And you thought that chemists were the good guys.

Won't Ever Legalize it due to Profitablity- 'Homegrown"
Posted by: Purple Girl on Oct 3, 2008 5:13 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The Pharm's and their Co- conspirators in turning our country into a Corp Colony will never allow Pot to be legalized- Unless the Law Prohibits Free market opportunities...ie Homegrown. figure there are still 'Stills' in the backwoods, because "Moonshine" is prohibited. In Fact Some Corp manufacture 'Spirits' are not allowed in all States due to Alcohol Content (Ever Clear, 3/2 Beer).
So they will have to not only monitor 'Home distribution' but also assure the Quality is Not better than the 'legal' Pharm produced variety.
Then of Course comes the other Corp Concern..what if people realize their Blood pressure goes down with out Their Pill? What if there is no need for the 'Jiggly leg'pill which offset the side effect of the anti Depressant/anti anxiety drug they have stopped using, Because Pot has worked Better?
Pot has Had one of the LONGEST Longitudinal Studies performed By man (Millenia)- You can smoke it,Eat it or steep it in a Tea.
It is Not that Pot is Dangerous, It's just they can't figure out How they Will control it and profit. In the Mean time they are killing US with side effects and lethal Interactions of their 'Not as Good as Gods' replacements. If one Chooses to prescribe a medication that has proven higher risks over one with far less risk constitutes Meidcal malpractice, reckless endangerment and poss 2nd degree Murder.
so docs instead of handing that 15 yr old a prozac, Tell him to go home and find a Joint- You could be saving his life on Two Fronts (immediate and Long term ).Let's Remember these Pharm Produced Psychotropics have a greater likilhood of inducing violent or suicidal thoughts and Tendencies. Pot does Not have that possible Rash thought process involved. In fact it would probably reduce such occurances and imagery. It's nearly impossible to be Angry or violent when You're High on Pot (Unlike Most of it's cousins Alcohol, Pills, psychotropics, Meth, Crack...)

I look at the pot prohibition as we all look at slavery. Horrible, stupid, and against our freedom. Anyone that wants pot to remain illegal is a complete fool. I should be able to put what I want in my body. Alcohol and cigs are legal, so why not marijuana? Is it a crime that it grows naturally?

Prohibition of alcohol, and the war of drugs, is a war against "FREE ENTERPRIZE"!!! Before prohibition, there were thousands of brewers, and distillers/ Afterwards, there were 13 of each!!! The medical marijuana issue, will only give power from one set of gangsters, to another set of government approved gangsters!!! Just another government created "MONOPOLY"!!! The people still don't have the right to grow their own!!! We'll still have to by it from the "SPECIAL PRIVILGED"!!! THIS CORPORATE/ GANGSTER, ENTERPRIZE SYSYEM, was the reason for the "AMERICAN REVOLUTION"!!! George Washington's, first law was that the HEMP PLANT" was to be legal forever, because it is the "MOST USEFULL PLANT ON EARTH"!!! IT WOULD END WORLD HUNGER( THE SEED IS THE MOST NUTRICIOUS HUMAN FOOD SOURCE), IT WOULD END THE FUEL CRISIS, (THE ONLY THING THAT YOU CAN MAKE FROM FOSSIL FUEL, THAT YOU CAN'T MAKE FROM HEMP IS POLUTION)IT WOULD CURE GLOBAL WARMING(BY MAKING PAPER PRODUCTS, OUT OF HEMP, WE COULD REFORREST THE PLANET, PRODUCING OXYGEN, AND REPLENSING THE OZONE LAYER)!!! BUT THAT WOULD CLOSE UP THE HOLE IN THE OZONE, AND FORBID THE REBUILDING OF THE TOWER OF BABELS NEW HIGH TECH CITY (ISIAH 14:12-14)

Figgers greedy rich people distort the truth of such an AMAZING fruit from our good earth mother. Marijuana medically has been used for THOUSANDS OF YEARS in the orient. there is no scientific proof that marijuana has any carcinogenic properties - smoking it, eating it, however you ingest it is GOOD FOR YOU. Peace from a fellow human bean - BE ENLIGHTENED.

of a large number of legitimate, scientifically quantifiable studies of the medicinal properties of marijuana that have been undertaken and published over the years. However, those that get any public exposure are primarily those that would seem to strengthen the claim that it not only has no medicinal value, it is dangerous. However, the methodology of many of these are at best, suspect.

One consistent and constant anti-medical marijuana talking point is that the evidence is anecdotal. Isn't that the bottom line case with all "medicines"/medical treatments? "Well Mr./Ms. Jones, has the treatment helped; and, if so, how and how well?"

legalize medical marijuana
Posted by: vasumurti on Oct 3, 2008 11:12 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Law Judge Francis L. Young wrote on September 8, 1988:

"Nearly all medicines have toxic, potentially lethal effects. But marijuana is not such a substance. There is no record in the extensive medical literature describing a proven, documented cannabis-induced fatality Marijuana, in its natural form, is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man."

After years of suppression by the government, the truth about medical marijuana is finally coming out. Dr. Tod Mikuriya, former director of marijuana research for the entire federal government, wrote in 1996: "I was hired by the government to provide scientific evidence that marijuana was harmful. As I studied the subject, I began to realize that marijuana was once widely used as a safe and effective medicine. But the government had a different agenda, and I had to resign."

Of all the reasons to legalize marijuana, the most compelling is its medical usage. Marijuana has a wide variety of therapeutic applications, and is frequently helpful in treating the following conditions:

AIDS. Marijuana reduces the nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite caused by both the ailment itself and as a side effect of treatment with AZT and other medicines.

Asthma. Several studies have shown that THC acts as a bronchodilator and reverses bronchial constriction. Although conventional bronchodilators work faster than marijuana, THC has been shown to last longer and with considerably less risk.

Arthritis and Other Autoimmune Diseases. In addition to its effectiveness in controlling the pain associated with arthritis, new evidence shows that marijuana is an autoimmune modulator.

Cancer. Marijuana stimulates the appetite and alleviates nausea and vomiting, common side effects of chemotherapy treatment. People undergoing chemotherapy find that smoking marijuana is an anti-nauseant often more effective than mainstream medications.

Epilepsy. Marijuana is used as an adjunctive medicine to prevent epileptic seizures. Some patients find that they can reduce dosage of other seizure-control medications while using cannabis.

Glaucoma. Marijuana can reduce intraocular pressure, alleviating pain and slowing (and sometimes stopping) the progress of the condition.

Multiple Sclerosis. Marijuana limits the muscle pain and spasticity caused by the disease, and relieves tremor and unsteady gait.

Migraine Headaches. Marijuana not only relieves pain, but also inhibits the release of serotonin during attacks.

Paraplegia and Quadriplegia. Many paraplegics and quadriplegics have discovered that cannabis not only relieves their pain better than opiates, but also suppresses their muscle twitches and tremors.

Tobacco kills about 430,700 each year. Alcohol and alcohol-related diseases and injuries kill about 110,000 per year. Secondhand tobacco smoke kills about 50,000 every year. Aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs kill 7,600 each year. Cocaine kills about 500 yearly alone, and another 2,500 in combination with another drug. Heroin kills about 400 yearly alone, and another 2,500 in combination with another drug. Adverse reactions to prescription drugs total 32,000 per year, while marijuana kills no one.

A November 4, 2002 Time/CNN Poll found 80 percent of those polled felt marijuana should be legal only for therapeutic purposes. 72 percent felt recreational users should get fines rather than jail time, which is essentially decriminalization.

The complete legalization of marijuana was favored only by 34 percent of respondents, but this figure is twice as large as it was in 1986. Marijuana is safer than alcohol and tobacco, and our drug laws should reflect this reality.

In the mid thirties, I'm led to believe, a cannabis harvesting machine, a la cotton gin, was patented. Shortly thereafter, a fellow by the name of Harry Anslinger was made US attorney general and he was the tool the few corporations I'm aware of used to criminalize pot-St. Regis Paper, Mellon Bank and Du Pont are the only names I recall. It seems cannabis develops far more fiber when grown very, very close together; an acre of pot thus grown in about six months generates almost as much pulp for paper as a similar acre of pine, which takes 10-12 years. Likewise, the oil to be obtained from hemp seeds, unrefined, is suitable for light industrial lubrications uses, as in commercial sewing machines and the like. And, as many have already mentioned, the more readily apparent and accessible medical uses of cannabis are numerous, to say the least.
I have been fortunate, or cursed, as the case may be, to have stumbled upon reading materials in my life that put the lie to many things I have been encouraged to believe, whether in the realm of the social, as with cannabis, or the political, as in "we, the people, at least as we govern ourselves, are immune to the lures of corruption and cronyism....". Imagine my surprise, then, when I chanced upon a volume, describing a study that had been performed by the US ARMY(the study's results came out in 1925, as I recall) on the effects of cannabis on soldiers over a 5-7(not too sure of the length of time) year period. While not especially significant, the study was conducted in the Panama Canal Zone. The upshot of the study was that it noted all the usual, like elevated hunger and diminished excitability, in addition to the amotivational syndrome most "suffer" upon consuming the noxious weed, but found the stuff to be decidedly harmless. Oh, yeah-I found this volume in the base library at Ft. Gordon, Georgia, an installation given over largely to training personnel in electronics subjects.
Now, I can't imagine anyone reading this page who is gung-ho on accepting EVERYTHING current and past government says on ANY subject. My philosophy is that roses grow in that brown smelly stuff that issues from most upright creature's behinds, so what I say might be taken sceptically. But I urge you to find out for yourself. After all, I could be merely a plant...
Oh, by the way, Harry Anslinger was an attorney for Du Pont before becoming AG. Fascinatin' how that revolving door works between bidniz and da gub'mint. N'est pas???
So, where does that leave us??? Being OBLIGED to obey cockamamie laws that massa won't and overtly so, in effect rubbing our noses in our powerlessness...? Hmm.
I say it's up to you. You may not be able to change or influence in any positive way how the inbred ones govern us, but, like Chief John Anderton and Winston Smith found, they can't watch you EVERYWHERE...
Grow your community-ultimately those who estimate and appreciate you will be the ones you need to depend on when the merry-go-round really goes haywire.

The waste products produced by the human body on pharmeceuticals, especially hormonal medications, are destroying our FRESH WATER SYSTEMS. Many, many anomalies, including sexual ones, are occurring within the biosystems which are tainted by this TOXIC WASTE. I had to laugh this week while listening to a radio commentator telling people to not throw their unused pharmeceuticals down the toilet, but neglecting to recognize it's the PEE! But the GOOD NEWS is: Marijuana DOES NOT POLLUTE groundwater systems or any water systems - it's a CLEAN drug!

decrimianalize yes but cannabis is pyschoactive

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Decriminalization is the main issue for cannabis but its medical benefits can carry side effects both legal and psychoactive.

The medical benefits of cannabis are from enabled oxygen with an increase in PO2, %of oxygen. SULFUR ENABLES THE TRANSPORT OF OXYGEN ACROSS THE CELL MEMBRANE.

Organic sulfur has been demonstrated to be very effective in addressing pain. Dr. Stanley Jacob’s book “MSM the Miracle Solution to Pain.” Cellular biologists describe pain as the absence of intracellular oxygen. SULFUR ENABLES OXYGEN TRANSPORT ACROSS the CELL MEBRANE.

Our Study of 9 years which is on going has had reports of the cessation of the narcotics which had been necessary to deal with the pain of cancer, arthritis, chronic headaches including migraines, gastro intestinal disorders and the associated cramps, phantom pains of lost limbs and a myriad of other types of pain issues which are all examples of the lack of intracellular oxygen and this includes glaucoma which has been the disease which cannabis has demonstrated such remarkable success. Organic sulfur has demonstrated the same lowering of intra ocular pressures of glaucoma without the risk of incarceration.

Cancer is an anaerobic metabolic process, Dr. Otto Warburg received a Noble Prize in the 30s for proving that cancer is caused by a lack of intracellular oxygen no matter what kind of cancer it may be. Cannabis increases the blood oxygen levels by 44% and some believe that is part of the high, an “oxygen high” not withstanding its psychoactive agents. Cannabis causes the vascular tree to relax and the blood vessels to engorge as can be seen by the engorged blood vessels seen in the whites of the eyes of pot smoker.

Organic sulfur increases the blood oxygen level as well but also increases the oxygen levels in the lymph system, not all of our cells receive oxygen via our blood supply.
Oxygen is the key and sulfur enables oxygen more effectively though it does not do so as rapidly. For those who suffer from pain we would suggest considering Organic Sulfur rather than an illegal drug ( whose status must be changed before we incarcerate more of our children for its use. )

Will Organic Sulfur prevent or reverse the anaerobic cellular metabolism of cancer? We don’t know but our Study members diagnosed with cancer have not reported a progression of their cancer. Our Study members who took sulfur during their various forms of chemo therapy did not suffer the adverse side effects of nausea, diarrhea or hair loss. Possibly of more importance are their energy levels remained high as well as their white blood counts.

Understanding the pharmacology of pain meds and the role of oxygen which the pain meds do not address, the meds only desensitize the nerve endings as an analgesic. The pain is still there but the nerve is deadened so that our brain is unaware of the pain. Enabling oxygen transport allows the inflammation to be addressed so that the cell can repair the reason for the inflammation.

The active agents of cannabis are not what relieves the pain of cancer, the oxygen it enables is what addresses the pain, but if the cells will not allow the transport of oxygen into the cells then the cannabis acts only an analgesic. Sulfur is a mineral which our bodies can not store but when present makes the cell membrane more plastic and flexible so that the giant gas molecule of oxygen can be transported.

Even if the criminal status of cannabis is address, organic sulfur may be more effective
legally in allowing our bodies to address the pain by increasing the oxygen within our
cells. The study is very interested in new study members.
