GOP Attacks on ACORN Are Based on the Fear of 1.3 Million New Voters

AlterNet. Posted October 13, 2008.

Jesse Jackson Jr, Steven Rosenfeld, Digby and Marc Ambinder on the GOP's race-baiting and smear job against ACORN's massive registration efforts.

Jesse Jackson Jr. from the Huffington Post: What the Republicans are Really Afraid of

The Republicans tried to make fun of Barack Obama as a community organizer at their national convention in Minnesota, which I guess just goes to show how little Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have to fear from right-wing "humor."

Now they've gone further: Now they're attacking ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now), one of the strongest, hardest-working, most dedicated community organizations in both Chicago and in 40 states across the U.S.

Why are they after ACORN? Well, I'm sure they're going to come up with a lot of "reasons" in the coming days. But the real reason is obvious: Because ACORN, along with Project Vote, just announced that they had successfully registered 1.3 million poor people this year.

Get that? 1.3 million, including 148,000 in Pennsylvania, 152,000 in Florida, 217,000 in Michigan, and 238,000 in Ohio. No wonder the GOP is up in arms. They're scared of too many poor people preparing to vote this year.

In the last week, the right wing has tried to blame ACORN for the collapse of the globalized financial system--yeah, that's a viable argument. They got excited because they found a some possible fake registration forms in Florida, which predictably led to a bunch of whining from the party that stole an entire presidency from Al Gore by blocking vote counts, mischaracterizing voters as felons, refusing to recount entire counties, sending congressional staff down to riot and intimidate volunteer vote-counters, and topped it all off with the most partisan, badly-reasoned, illegitimate Supreme Court decision since Plessy v. Ferguson. A decision so illegitimate that the partisan majority, to their eternal discredit, themselves damned by writing into their own decision that it should never be used as a precedent for any other court ruling.

This week, the right-wing is hyperventilating because apparently Democratic election officials raided an ACORN office after they found the names of some Dallas Cowboy football players among the 80,000 new registration forms that ACORN helped to get done in Nevada.

Obviously it's not right for a fake "Tony Romo" to be registered in Las Vegas, so someone was probably playing a not-very-funny joke, or trying to pad their registration numbers to get paid a little more money rather than doing the hard work in the hot Nevada sun that helping voters to register requires, or maybe a provocateur was setting up ACORN for some bad press. But remember the basic point--it's not voter fraud unless someone shows up at the voting booth on election day and tries to pass himself off as "Tony Romo." And who would try to do that? No one is going to be that stupid.

The truth is, the main voter fraud efforts going on in my lifetime--and I was born the week of the Selma march in 1965--have been repeated conservative attempts, far too many of them successful, to demonize and suppress the vote of African-Americans and Latinos in election after election, a history for which former RNC Chair Ken Mehlman actually apologized a few years ago, while promising the GOP would no longer engage in such tactics.

So they stole an election from Gore, made the Department of Justice into an outfit for partisan hacks, allowed New Orleans to drown, lied us into a war against a country that did not threaten us, replaced science with bad ideology, indebted our grandchildren to China, and turned our banking system into a deregulated casino--but thank the Lord that "Tony Romo" will not be able to sneak in to vote in Nevada next month.

This time, there are already fake flyers mysteriously appearing on the streets of minority areas of Philadelphia, illegal voter purges in numerous states, "caging" tricks, threats of using home foreclosure lists to strike voters from the rolls, and "black box" electronic vote-counting systems under the control of private companies--and we haven't even gotten to election day!

Meanwhile, I say thank you, ACORN. Thank you, Project Vote, for taking our democracy seriously enough to try to include 1.3 million more poor people in a more perfect union.

Steven Rosenfeld: McCain's Racist ad

John McCain's latest ad attacking Barack Obama and ACORN, the low-income advocacy group whose members mostly are people of color, is not just false on the facts, it may be the most racist ad in presidential politics since 1988's infamous Willie Horton mug shot.

It is my goal to get in touch with someone from the Obama campaign and share with them my desire to be a part of his inauguration by reciting a poem I wrote called “We Must Change,” and I kindly ask for your help in doing so.
Go to youtube and do a search for "thinkverybig" and watch all of those videos. The one called "We Must Change" would be fitting to recite at Obama's Inauguration

Registering New Voters -- The (Potential) Downside
Posted by: editnetwork on Oct 13, 2008 4:06 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The ACORN workers can't be blamed for those who submit fraudulent applications to vote -- if they are even that and not "mistakes" like supplying one form of their name when some other form is on their driver's license, for example. Or forgetfully registering more than once, with more than one address (thinking they have to reregister if one temporary domicile is replaced by another). Nobody wants to turn in registrations they are confident will get thrown out, even if they are willing to flag ones they doubt -- a sign of honesty, if one cares to realize that.

The workers collecting registrations are obligated by law nearly everywhere to simply turn those applications in. It's the election offices' responsibility to fact-check them, screen them for veracity, etc. The memo ending the above piece and its devastating list of "facts" ought to put the whole thing to rest, except that the Lying Liars are not so easily dissuaded.

It's the C.O. in ACORN that has Republicans' knickers in a twist: "Why don't those people get a real job, with real responsibilities that might give them some real experience?" As usual, they are practicing the Rovian tactic of dividing, disparaging, and distracting, and people are too willing to believe that "community organizing" is a bogus "job," if not some leftist conspiracy to mobilize the disadvantaged. (Hm, no wonder they're uncomfortable: Too close to the truth, a place they can barely endure!)

We need to practice discernment on issues like voter registration, to say nothing of community organizing, and this article does a fine job.

This is not about ACORN registering 1.5 million democratic voters - it's their methods of intimidation they have used not to mention my tax dollars to fund them to sign up just democratic voters.. it's another party scam!

ACORN also has ties to this latest housing disaster as they have intimidated and pressured politicians and banks to relax loan standards so poor could buy houses.. now we are all suffering from this.

ACORN is not an example of what Obama is or isn't, and the GOP are wrong in asserting this.

What it is is a perfect example of the effects on America of democratic/liberal thinking.

The two party system is about to fail us again.

Pelosi was right, we need to drain the swamp, starting with her!

Here is it THE OCTOBER SURPRISE

I just heard the other shoe drop.

McCain's group has nothing...their sky is falling and they know it. This is just an effort to deflect attention from the very difficult situation we find ourselves in here in the US. The best way that they have of instilling even more FEAR into the hearts of already frightened Americans is to show Obama as a bad guy who is dishonest and would do anything to get elected...just like McCain.

They know on Nov 4 if they can create even the slightest doubt in the minds of voters they will turn to what they have been living with for years rather than the unknown alternative.

Jackson said it just above: It's not voter fraud unless you show up at the polls with the intention of perpetrating fraud.

ACORN and fraud

I don't know the truth of the charges regarding ACORN filing fake registrations. I am certain the Obama campaign would not have anything to do with this.

If someone in ACORN did create fake registrations for profit then those responsible should be held legally accountable, not the organization itself.

I am certain this would be the response from the Obama campaign itself.

Watch the Republicans try to find a way to use this to get ALL ACORN registrations contested because that is the kind of "people" most political republicans are. ( Note I don't blame individual republicans here )

The GOP favors voter ID. The Dems Favor VOTER FRAUD!

The GOP is not AFRAID OF ACORN. The GOP is not interested in being cheated. The Democrats are great at cheating then blaming the GOP for voter supression. Remember in 2000 Democrats only wanted to recount votes from Democratic counties in Florida. They did not want Republican counties recounted or Military ballots counted at all.
Currently in close states ACORD had asked homeless to register not once or even twice but 60 or 70 times. Did anyone but me see the homeless guy testify before congress this morning? He said he was asked to fill out 8 voter registeration cards after he told ACORN reps that he was already registered to vote. He was registered in 8 different counties. He testified that he did not fill in the COUNTY part of the registration because he was asked not to by ACORN! According to testamony of other witnesses happening today in front of Congress ACORN paid for these registrations with cigarettes or dollar bills! This is ACORN and Democrats taking advantage of the poor! Indianapolis now has 105% of the cities population registered! Where is the outcry on Alternet? Why are the progressive bloggers and reporters that write for Alternet supporting ACORN?
Why do Democrats resist voter ID laws but not driver ID laws or liquor ID laws or cigarette ID laws or even R rated theater ID laws? Why do they insist that Republicans are the ones stealing elections while Democrats are the culprits? Why do Democrats approve of Obama donations to ACORN? What services was Obama to receive for his EIGHT HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLAR donation to ACORN? Does Obama and Democrats demand that anyone or group should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law if caught in the act of voter fraud and the act of purposely filing false voter registrations? I doubt it. I have only heard silence from the OBAMA camp about these voter fraud aligations. He has not condemed these actions of fraud!
This must be because Democrats and OBAMA support VOTER FRAUD.

the voter rolls is being done in several states. I know this is stating the obvious but it is illegal to touch those rolls within 90 days of an election as per federal law. I'm sure that won't get any airtime on the "liberal, elitist" media. The Republicans are running scared and have no choice but to go into their predictable hysterics about voter fraud.
I'll be glad when the GOP gets thrown out on it's keister in November and they can crawl back under the rock from whence they came.

I'm a Community Banker and...

Rosenfeld in his section of this article states "In other words, the blame for today's financial panic are Obama -- and ACORN-backed loans to black and brown people."

Further he says that the maverick's campaign is insinuating that lending institutions were pressured by "that one" and ACORN into making bad loans.

Here's the deal, we sometimes are pressured by our shareholders and the Board, but they're the only people who influence the level of risk we're willing to take. There are some regulators who we deal with that can also influence our lending activity based off their assessment of our "risk." However, there's not any influence CRA (Community Reinvestment Act), ACORN, or other groups can have. We're here to make money and to do that we assume some risk, but it is risk dictated by our ownership. Even if ACORN came in and said "we'll picket," or whatever, we'd say "okay." We still would maintain the risk we need to survive.

However, banks do abuse the poor. "Free checking" is designed for people who can't afford checking and then when they inevitably overdraft we slam them with exorbitant fees and do this while basically doing nothing. It's the greatest scam and money maker in banking today and folks still think "free checking" is a good deal. It's a cash cow for the bank and great marketing, but it preys on those who cannot afford to bank.

As usual the right is being disingenuous with their argument (and as usual they know it) and stoking racial fears putting their party, not their country, first. On the one hand they have nothing else. On the other hand their behavior approaches the definition of treason.

Expert after expert, even some notables on the right, and poll after poll have demonstrated clearly the choice in this election is Obama/Biden. Yet, the republicans discard what is best for our country and go with what they perceive is best for them. They haven’t learned that this is the reason they’re poised for a defeat of historic proportions. Perhaps November 4 will drive this point home.

At least ACORN is a hero for fighting to help voters overcome DISENFRANCHISEMENT and they don't give a damn who anyone's voting for. Name me one rightwing organization that can even match ACORN.

Two dozen ACORN canvassers all told a major media outlet that they had to make registration card quotas. That's what encouraged the falsified voter registration cards. They were not really getting paid by the hour, but really by the quota.

ACORN needs to back off on their "hourly wage" claim, and they need to back off from their "rigorous checking" claim. Making false claims will only damage ACORN. Better would be for them to say how they're going to correct the problem in the future.

As for Republican exaggeration, that's the Republicans' problem. Nobody likes a consistent fraud.

I live in a very republican area. I usually avoid political discussions. However, this year its different. I am no longer willing to smile and say calmly, "I don't agree" and walk away. Now I say, "Oh, yeah? Prove it!" and "How's that been working for you over the past 8 years? How has the Republican led administration made your life better?" We must firmly and loudly state the truth and voice opposition to these terrible lies and obfuscations whenever we come across them on the blogs and in our personal conversations. I've actually made a few people stop and think, and I couldn't beleive it when I saw a neighbor, who has proudly sported a Bush/Cheney bumper sticker on his car since 2000 now has a bright, brand new Obama/Biden sticker on it. So you see, some eyes can be opened.

The GOP's Bitter Autumn Harvest
Posted by: penobscotdziekuje@yahoo.com on Oct 13, 2008 4:19 PM
Current rating: 1    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Autumn is a wonderful and colorful time of the year, when pumpkin carving contests, football, Halloween and romance may sparkle a person's fancy; the dog days of summer and barbecuing end.
In autumn farmers reap their harvests and let the fields lie fallow or plant crops which can grow in the hardy, tough winter days.
But for one group of people, the masterminds of the Republican Party, have discovered that their crops didn't ripen according to plan by attacking a community organization called ACORN to find their crops diseased by corn smut, ergot and other crippling kinds of fungi.
Now McCain's campaign, with the growing days fast becoming shorter, will go hungry, and he may not win the election next month. He will undoubtedly struggle to get his message out, but since his crops are gone his side is bitter about having no political food in reserve to get them through.
He understimated his biting attacks on his Democratic opponent-he strolled about his land not planning for the long cold days ahead and ignored his field while the other man took means to prepare his farm for the future, and now he has a lot of food in reserve for his family and for his country. Obama will have enough political husbandry to eat until next Spring.
ACORN took necessary precautions to prevent voter fraud, but they're not the ones who signed their names on the forms if these newly-registered voters wanted to register others who would not vote before; a million more votes for the Democrats send chills up McCain's back. Therefore the R's are nervous in Ohio, Michigan, Florida, "battleground" states. (Ironically these three states had voting trouble in the last presidential election. Guess whose votes were voided? You guessed right, Blacks.)
So why dredge up this organization which has nothing to do with finding us jobs, fixing the economy, taking on the military-industrial complex and combating racism? How come YOU are raising a fuss about it NOW? The R's are going before a judge without an alibi, meaning they have no excuse for what they're saying about Obama's "character", which everday is looking more like a "hit".
Much to their dismay the smear tactics the Elephants are using naturally backfired and the farm of political ideas is barren, weed-choked and dormant by pesticides. They'll face meals of crow until they learn to temper their attitudes and find a better way to unite us instead of launching stinging attacks all the time.

Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now

It should actually be called Barry Hussein Obamas association of dead/false identify voter registration committee. Wake up people, this guy is involved in pimping votes out of “under privileged” non tax paying (tax taking) Americans some of which are so uniformed they will probably vote for him because he sounds good reading a speech, it worked for Clinton….what ever it is their vote right? My issue is this guy is going to get elected partially because of this fraudulent organization. America will be one step towards socialism once he is elected mark my words.

If the people do not take to the streets to riot in protest of yet another stolen election, then the people deserve a dictatorship.

3 Men who brought down Wall Street and NOW are with OBAMA....................

Be sure to read the "where they are now"!!

THETHREE AMIGOS who were CEOs at Fannie Mae single handedly brought down WALL STREET AND CAUSED THIS MESS.

1. Franklin Raines:

Chairman and CEO at Fannie Mae. as forced to retire from his position when auditing discovered severe irregulaties in Fannie Mae's accounting activities

On his departure The Wall Street Journal noted, " Raines, who long defended the company's accounting despite mounting evidence that it wasn't proper....., issued a statement conceding "mistakes were made" and he would assume responsibility as promised. The company under growing pressure from regulators found that the company's books ran afoul of generally accepted accounting principles for 4 years." Raines left with a "golden parachute valued at $240 Million He had to return 50 million in bonuses but still has the Fannie Mae had to reduce its surplus by $9 billion.

. 190 Million left over after ordered to return 50 million.

READ IN DETAIL HERE:

2. Tim Howard: ANOTHER CEO of Fannie Mae. Howard "was a strong internal proponent of using accounting strategies that would ensure a "stable pattern of earnings" at Fannie. In everyday English - he was cooking the books. The Government Investigation determined that, "Chief Financial Officer, Tim Howard, failed to provide adequate oversight to key control and reporting functions within Fannie Mae," On June 16, 2006, Rep. Richard Baker, R-La ., asked the Justice Department to investigate his allegations that two former Fannie Mae executives lied to Congress in October 2004 when they denied manipulating the mortgage-finance giant's income statement to achieve management pay bonuses. Investigations by federal regulators and the company's board of directors since concluded that management did manipulate 1998 earnings to trigger bonuses. Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in late 2004.

Howard's Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million!

3. Jim Johnson: A former executive at Lehman Brothers and who was later forced from his position as Fannie Mae CEO. A look at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight's May 2006 report on mismanagement and corruption inside Fannie Mae, and you'll see some interesting things about Johnson. Investigators found that Fannie Mae had hidden a substantial amount of Johnson's 1998 compensation from the public, reporting that it was between $6 million and $7 million when it fact it was $21 million." Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae.

Johnson's Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million.

WHERE ARE THEY NOW?

1. FRANKLIN RAINES? Raines works for the Obama Campaign as Chief Economic Advisor to OBAMA

2. TIM HOWARD? Howard is also a Chief Economic Advisor to OBAMA

3. JIM JOHNSON? Johnson hired to Vice Presidential Search Committee & Senior Advisor to GUESS WHO?....OBAMA

IF OBAMA PLANS ON CLEANING UP THE MESS - HIS ADVISORS CERTAINLY HAVE THE EXPERTI$E - THEY MADE THE ME$$ IN THE FIRST PLACE. Would you trust the men who tore Wall Street down to build the New Wall Street ?

Here in the Las Vegas area, the Republican party is working at registering people by accosting them at the DMV and local grocery stores. They are not just adults doing this, but they have their minor children doing this as well (a big no-no since they have to attest to every one they sign and therefore must be 18). They then take your application to vote not to the County Clerk, no, they take it to the Republican Party/McCain/Palin HQ before submitting them. They are even brazen enough to tell you that no matter what your party registration you will be placed on a mailing list for their campaigns so that you can become a "more informed voter". When you challenge them on anything about their candidates or their positions, they get hostile, demand you either fill out the form or move on - but answer a direct question they will not! Talk about having questionable registration tactics!?! I would want to challenge every voter registration that they turned in, and call everyone they register to confirm the party of choice. I bet you would find a whole lot of them are not registered as Democrats or Independents, and I bet you would find that most of them are really angry at being inundated by the junk mail from the RNC!

This is a really necessary idea that's run into some trouble with a few less than intelligent operatives.Obama's connections are as dubious as with Bill Ayers.Lets get to something serious and forget these trite distractions.
