The New Face of Terrorism? A Square White Guy

By Robert Scheer, Truthdig. Posted August 6, 2008.

The deadliest biological assault on the United States may have been perpetrated by a church-going white man, with anthrax from our own weapons labs.

The terrorists find all sorts of reasons to hate us. On Tuesday came word that the deadliest biological assault on the United States may be linked to the rejection of the terror suspect by a Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority sister decades ago. That is offered as an explanation of why the accused U.S. Army bio-warfare scientist allegedly drove seven hours from his home to mail anthrax-laced letters from a mailbox near the sorority's Princeton University office, according to the Associated Press.

What we learned last week, after the suicide of Bruce E. Ivins, was disquieting enough without the twisted love angle. If you can believe the recent leaks from the FBI on its most important unsolved crime -- which killed five and sickened 17, immobilized the federal government and traumatized the nation -- it was a clean-shaven, white, God-fearing Catholic guy who done it. Despite a government anxious to find yet another example of Islamic terrorism in the wake of 9/11, it quickly became clear to experts that the anthrax used in the only WMD attack on our nation was a sophisticated product traceable to our own biological weapons labs. This is not surprising, because the United States has long been a leader in this field.

Our ostensible reason for developing the world's most sophisticated arsenal of deadly biological weapons is that the United States needs to learn how to prevent such attacks from deranged outsiders. Now we have yet another reminder that the enemy may be us, and that at least some of the folks who develop weapons like to find occasions to use them. In this case, the terrorist the FBI was about to charge with homicide was a nut case who nonetheless received the highest security clearance to work on the most dangerous of weapons deep within our own military-industrial complex.

This is yet another disappointment for those writing the basic Bush administration narrative in which the terrorist is always some Islamo-fascist guy. That's the assigned role that Saddam Hussein failed at so miserably. Remember when New York Times reporter Judith Miller was breathlessly reporting every sighting of a rusting Iraqi RV as one of Hussein's biological weapons labs to justify the invasion of a country that had nothing to do with 9/11? Gosh, how the military-industrial complex must miss the Soviet Union, which could be trusted to match us in the high-tech game of dispensing mass death.

Of course, our government, which has never disowned the right to build and use nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, has long insisted that we alone are to be trusted with the creation of those devilish devices. Others are judged either too irrational, evil or merely incompetent to be allowed WMD, whereas we alone, with the unique experience of having killed hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Hiroshima and Nagasaki, pose no threat. That others might not see it our way, particularly after recent incidents, such as the missing nukes that crossed the United States on that errant B-52 flight, or the anthrax attack allegedly conducted by one of our top bio-weapons scientists, is understandable.

The larger problem is that we no longer take the threat of WMD as seriously as we should. We focused on the nonexistent WMD in Iraq while ignoring the spread of nuclear technology from Pakistan to North Korea, Iran and Libya under the guidance of A.Q. Khan, father of Pakistan's popularly revered "Islamic bomb." As former CIA Director George Tenet wrote in his memoir, the Bush administration seized upon the WMD issue in Iraq only because it was convenient: "The United States did not go to war in Iraq solely because of WMD. In my view, I doubt it was even the principal cause. Yet it was the public face that was put on it."

The public face of terrorism was a bearded Muslim armed with WMD. No wonder we were caught off guard when the only person to ever attack us with WMD turns out to be, apparently, an active congregant at St. John the Evangelist Church in Frederick, Md., and a highly trusted employee of the U.S. military.

Not that our sleuths weren't forewarned. As Ivins' therapist, social worker Jean Duley, reported to the Maryland District Court last month in a hearing to obtain a restraining order: "As far back as the year 2000, the respondent has actually attempted to murder several other people ... he is a revenge killer when he feels that he's been slighted ... especially towards women. ... He has been forensically diagnosed by several top psychiatrists as a sociopathic, homicidal killer."

In any case, he was one of us.

Digg!

This anthrax act was timed perfectly by the architects of Iraq war to scare the public to support the war.

This is nothing new in American history: USS Maine, Gulf of Tonkin, are some of the few examples of how US government lies to the public to get them to support the war effort.

Bush I administration, Kuwaiti government and US PR firms invented the bogus story of 'Iraqi soldiers throwing babies thrown from the incubators in Kuwait' to get the public behind the war effort during Gulf War I.

It is evidence of the American stupidity that US regimes use the same tricks to sell one war after the other!

from the KKK to Tim McVeigh, haven't crazy, right-wing hateful white guys always been the face of terrorism. Oh yeah, that's right, a terrorist, we are supposed to understand, is INHERENTLY someone of color.

Why is a white guy “the new face of terrorism”? White males have always been the worlds most horrific and prolific terrorist. You people have killed one million Iraqis devastated two nations and still you have the gall to smear others as “terrorists”. You are such special people, no one like you in the world.

Scheer is correct, who are we? We are the people that gave the native nations blankets infected with smallpox because "Manifest Destiny" was our motto! We are the people that enslaved millions so that we could have "free labor"! We are the people that allowed 'Jim Crow" to continue so that we could have votes! We are the people that bombed Japan, bought the lies about Viet Nam, used our military as test guinea pigs! We have invaded 2 countries because of liars, thieves, and thugs!

We are the people that allowed a "B" grade actor to take over the white house! We are the people divided by an outrageous idea-ology that has nothing to do with the issues that this country faces!

The US signed it.(BWC)

I wonder if we continue to look for loopholes or,even worse, out of real or misperceived fear we downright violated this important international treaty? I wonder?.....

BIGGEST "BIOLOGICAL ATTACK" IN US HISTORY
Posted by: drricklippin on Aug 8, 2008 4:25 AM

Sorry to stretch the language and premise of this good article too far but the biggest "biologic attack" on America especially over the past 2 decades is the wanton and aggressive marketing of dangerous pharmaceuticals onto a naive American public by a greedy and arrogant Pharmaceutical Industry.

I call this a true miracle industry gone completely sour. I for one continue to call for jail time for some of the CEOs. Fines and financial legal settlements are not enough to stop this immoral if not illegal "drug pushing"

day after day the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun, two top newspapars with staffs close to Ft Detrick, report that experts in the Bio Warfare field have doubts that Dr Ivins was the killer, or that if he was involved, that he had help. this case is cirumstantial and comes on heels of the FBI trying to frame another scientist, who now collected over five million in a settlement.

Mr. Scheer is correct that the US is the world's biggest threat when it comes to bio and chem warfare. But the riddle of the anthrax case hasn't been solved, and i'm disappointed in one of my favorite investigative reporters and intellectual skeptics falling so hard for FBI propaganda. Needless to say, how much time has the FBI spent in investigating intelligence agencies' involvement in the murders?

No more far-fetched than the deranged scientist theory they are trying to sell at the close of the Bush Administration. Now we know Bush and Cheney had documents forged to launch a $1trillion+ war. You think a little antrax scare is beyond their means or morality?

All kinds of loose ends will be wound up in the next few months, and watch those records in the White House, Pentagon, CIA, NSA and Cheney operation vanish into colorless, odorless, traceless vapor.

"TERRORISTS" WHO ARE THEY???

Terrorism is very real and very frightening. 9/11 was a horrible tragedy for example

However. What do the following have in common?

- Dr.Bruce Ivins
- Timothy McVeigh
- Ted Kaczinski
- James Earl Ray
- Lee Harvey Oswald
- others?

They are NOT the face of stereotypical terrorism portrayed the the Bush administration and Sen John McCain who continue to state incessantly that "Extremist Islamo-facism is the most defining issue of our times"

We do have very real external "enemies" but plenty of "home grown" ones also.

If we continue to only look externally we will see the above pattern repeated and repeated and......???

Believe it!- Thanks

... in North America was waged by a colonial white guy named Jeffrey Amherst. He gave blankets infected with smallpox to the Native Americans. Other than that I'm sure he was a lovely God-Fearing man, just like all the other terrorists throughout history.

I am in absolute agreement about the Extremeist in this country who must be watched and Stopped!
Who was assasinating Doc's, Who was bombing Clinics, who attacked during the Olympics in GA, Who was jsut arrested because he killed his wife 4 yrs ago and had her in the freezer...Who Who who??
'Christian' Extremeist have been terroizing OUR country for decades. It's time we call and treat them for what they are.
They have been wageing a "Holy War" On US!!!
To satisfy their delusions of Granduer they have now decided to pit US against others in the name of THEIR deluded design/prophecy.
so they are sending Our kids off to fight the 'evil' Muslims, or AQ,.. Or Russians?
They don't care who they fight as long as both get slaughtered- a Sacrific to THEIR 'god'??
"have no other God Before Me"...Isn't calling jesus 'Lord' setting him up as an Idol to be worshipped before & above God?? Isn't Killing on that list of 'NOT TO DO's' Too? Isn't 'coveting thy neighbors' things also listed (Oil)....Seems these so called 'christians' have been hell bent on breaking every 'rule'...so who do you suppose they actually Serve? "Could it be Satan??"
As for the Anthrax story..Why did the military kept him on (No psychological profiles?), Why was safety & Inventory control Protocols not observed when handling this bio weapon(Rev Wright may be vindicated regarding HOW AIDs started, if this is the way the military mishandles such agents)? Why is a 'therapist' with no license able to determine diagnosis- where's the Psychiatrists who are required to provide Dx's, monitor underlings and perscribe meds prn?Why did only certain media outlets and congress people end up 'his' targets? Why after 9/11 would he think his vaccine would be shelf'ed? Wouldn't the fact he could handle this agent and not become infected have proven the vaccine effective?
come on -i've raised a daughter through her teens..I know when shit 'don't add up'!!

Ivins was a Catholic and the FBI theory of why he allegedly attacked Lehy and Daschle was that he was "pro-Life" like his wife. i am not sure what to think of evidence so far. I am leaning toward thinking Ivins did the first attack, but that its possible the 2nd attack aimed at Senators might have been Republican operatives taking advantage of 9/11 and 9/18 to push passage of Patriot Act. I hope this story does not completely disappear with War in Georgia and election campaign.
