The U.S. Is Drowning in Pretend Patriotism

By Robert Scheer, Truthdig. Posted July 4, 2008.

This Fourth of July, let's remember that it's not our God-given American right to reorder the world to our liking.

As we head into the Fourth of July weekend of patriotic bluster and beer swilling -- but before we are too besotted with ourselves -- might we also for once consider our imperfections? Why not take a moment to heed the cautions of our founding father, George Washington, whose true legacy will most likely be ignored during the flag-waving weekend?

Washington's "Farewell Address" to the new nation was a warning about the threat of American imperial ambitions and a declaration of his high expectations for a republic of free men: "In offering to you, my countrymen, these counsels of an old and affectionate friend, I dare not hope they will make the strong and lasting impression I could wish; that they will control the usual current of the passions, or prevent our nation from running the course which has hitherto marked the destiny of nations. But, if I may even flatter myself, that they may be productive of some partial benefit, some occasional good; that they may now and then recur to moderate the fury of party spirit, to warn against the mischiefs of foreign intrigue, to guard against the impostures of pretended patriotism. ..."

We are drowning in the "impostures of pretended patriotism," used to cover the lies that got us into Iraq, the defense of torture and the violation of our basic liberties. In the name of patriotism, we presume a God-given American right to reorder the world to our liking, masking the vice of unfettered greed as an obligation of national security.

Any doubts as to this later governing impulse of our imperial ambitions were shattered with the recent news that U.S. advisers to our puppet government in the Green Zone of occupied Iraq have worked out agreements for American oil companies to gain control of Iraqi oil fields. But, then again, what did we expect when we elected a Texas oil hustler, and a failed one at that, to be our president?

Only in an America dumbed down by constant propaganda about our innate moral superiority will anyone any longer believe that we didn't invade Iraq for the oil, even though Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice came to the Bush administration from the board of directors at Chevron, where they named an oil tanker after her. Like Vice President Dick Cheney with those Halliburton contracts, Rice has stayed true to her corporate sponsors. That's what the U.S. invasion of Iraq accomplished; for the first time in more than three decades after Iraq joined a worldwide trend of formerly colonized nations gaining control of their own resources, Big Oil is getting its black gold back. It was always about the oil -- that's why "we" invaded Iraq -- only "we" aren't getting any, at least not at a reasonable price. The oil companies are.

I know it's difficult for the corporate media and politicians, both fueled generously by energy money, to grasp the distinction, but we the people and they the oil companies are not one and the same. While we suffer at the pump, they make record profits, which is the way they like it. Don't think for a second that U.S. oil companies are rushing into Iraq to expand production to help lower world oil prices, thus making their investments less profitable. They just want to be on the winning side, which is why the CEO of Halliburton relocated his office from Texas to the United Arab Emirates, where I am certain he and his fellow corporate expatriates are able to happily celebrate the Fourth of July.

So, take that American flag off your lapel and replace it with a button bearing the Exxon or Chevron logo. C'mon, Dick Cheney and Condi Rice, be straight about what it is you are really pushing here. 'Fess up -- it's not the good old USA as represented by the sucker taxpayers conned by your patriotic blather. No sirree, what you would have Americans paying homage to is the majesty of the big multinational corporations that exploit American military power to rule the world.

But recognize that you have shamed the legacy of our first president. George Washington, who distinguished the promise of the new world from the corruptions of the old by shunning imperial conquest, said: "Our commercial policy should hold an equal and impartial hand; neither seeking nor granting exclusive favors or preferences; consulting the natural course of things; diffusing and diversifying by gentle means the streams of commerce, but forcing nothing."

If Barack Obama or John McCain was to offer such words of wisdom this Fourth of July, he would be vilified as "weak," and that is a fit measure of just how far we have descended from the high hopes of our first president.

Digg!

The Secret Destiny Of America

For thousands of years, people have labored in secret for laying the groundwork of a worldwide democratic union. A union of educated men and women, not ruled by a king or queen, but to determine their own self-enlightened government.

While we may be taught in school that America itself was the goal, we can see from the actions of the leaders of western nations that there is a different and more subtle agenda under way.

First look at one of the US' greatest monuments, Mount Rushmore. All of the presidents depicted are those who supported or had great influence on the expansion of the united States of America.

George Washington was the first president of the US. Thomas Jefferson made the Louisiana Purchase which expanded the colonies to include the lands east of the Mississippi. Abraham Lincoln was the president which held the union together and brought men onto more equal grounds with the steps taken towards the abolition of slavery. And Roosevelt was responsible for the Panama Canal which opened sea trade routes for the western half of the US. Roosevelt also was known for being a trust buster and giving average citizens and greater chance of equality with regulation of the railroads.

Fast forward to current events and the complaints of 'American Imperialism' and the belief that the west must bring democracy to other nations. While I do not always agree with the means of this, the outcome for modern day Americans, I believe, is far better than what Europe and those farther East have had to offer for the last several thousand years. And for that I am thankful.

For an interesting read, look into the book The Secret Destiny of America by Manly P. Hall. Published by The Philosophical Research Society in LA.

In Patriotism We Trust

Ever notice that when we're really sure of something, we don't need to trumpet it to the skies or rub everyone else's nose in it? It's the person who goes on and on and on about how perfect her marriage is who's in divorce court by the end of the year.

This kind of patriotism is like a certain kind of religion, a raft that people cling to when they're scared sh*tless about where the river is carrying them. And when you're that scared, the biggest enemy is the person who says the raft is breaking up, or we don't need the raft to ride the river.

I wonder a lot about whether the wars fought and atrocities committed in the name of God were fought and committed by people who believed in God -- or by people who didn't and were afraid of being found out.

As a Vet, we are non-celebrating at Independence Hall tomorrow with a Declaration of Independence from these Murderers that send our sons and daughters to Iraq and Afghanistan, oh only 28 murdered in Afghanistan last month.
We will declare our Independence and refusal to serve the current Psychopath in Chief, while still in office and remind others of that trivial little thing, the CONSTITUTION.
So Happy F$$King 4th and I will see how many murdered and maimed yesterday when icasualties.org gives us an update.
What the Murderer in Chief the EVIL DOER and his minions have wrought upon this Nation that will take decades to repair.
Seriously, enjoy your day and try to remember the Iraqis, Afghanistanis and my Brothers and Sisters for a minute today.
Please go to http://ivaw.org and help our ever increasing Resistors, Conscientous Objectors that WILL NOT leave this country for refusing to fight in an Illegal Occupation.
Peace

That's when we celebrate taxation "with" representation. At least that's what we're led to believe. When was the last time you felt that the government represented you, as anything other than a consumer of corporate goods?

The dream ended in 1886 when a landmark decision by a US court recognized the corporation as a 'natural person' under law. The 14th amendment to the Constitution: 'no state shall deprive any person of life, liberty or property' -- adopted to protect emancipated slaves in the hostile South -- was used to defend corporations and strike down regulations.

FREE TRADE

Unchecked capitalism ran rampant, and by the end of the 19th century railroad tycoons and robber barons were in charge of monopolies and cartels. So much so that the health of capitalism itself was threatened. Massive labour unrest was brewing. In the US, antitrust laws to break monopolies were brought in. Taxation and tariffs were raised and state regulation crept in once more. However, one railroad executive observed that regulation was good only "in order to impress the popular mind with the idea that a great deal is being done, when in reality, very little is intended to be done".

Really, we have no one to thank but ourselves. For the last 30 years there has been a war of indifference on the American public by our government, all to help the multi-nationals as if they weren't making money before.

Things worth celebrating

This whole, angry discussion makes me sad. I, too am horrified by the greed, imperialism, and dishonesty of our elected leaders and the coporations who love them. However, I can't let myself live completely paralyzed by the despair that brings.

What I WILL celebrate today are the many people I know who do good things; who make a difference in small ways. The ones who donate their time to tutor kids, coach sports teams, lead scout troops, clean up their local parks and rivers. The ones who raise money for cancer or diabetes research, volunteer at homeless shelters, nursing homes and hospital. Those who donate money, food, blood, and resources to people in need. The list is endless. Many of these people don't have a lot of spare time and money to give, but still they do it.

Our government may be corrupt, but "we the people," from what I can tell are, by and large, a compassionate, caring and selfless bunch. We still look out for each other -- and that's a good thing. It will always serve us well.

Patriotism vs. Democracy and Imperialism
Posted by: david.model@senecac.on.ca on Jul 4, 2008 6:45 AM
Current rating: 4    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
There is nothing contradictory about celebrating the Fourth of July and believing that your country is less than perfect. Patriotism is about celebrating the ideals on which your country was founded not about celebrating the presidents who stomped on those ideals.

There is no question that America is an Empire which has invaded or intervened in over 60 countries since World War II committing war crimes along the way. My lateswt book "State of darkness" documents 8 genocides of which the U.S. is guilty.

There is litle doubt that democracy in the United States is seriously flawed as corporate influence through lobbying and corporate donations not to mention the former corporate hanchos who inhabit the White House has corrupted the government into a plutocracy.

People who celebrate the Fourth of July would serve their country better by remembering the ideals and hold their governments up to those standards.

America has never been free from England. Whites freed themselves militarily with the help of blacks but no one was ever freed economically. The Rothschilds still own and run this country along with Israel. The central bankers have devalued the dollar and will not stop until it is erased. The Brits are still angry at the American audacity to proclaim themselves free and especially the Bill of Rights, which of course we honor only in principle and almost never in practice. This is a failed experiment, not a democracy, and it's time to call the spade a spade.

I hate jingoism to no end and that lapel pin business with Obama just makes me livid.

Just an observation, but have you noticed how those that boast their patriotism the loudest desecrate the flag the most? I'm talking about people WEARING the flag as clothing, which is against protocol. Also, letting it get tattered and dirty on you car. Also, letting it touch the ground. One of my fav's was a big, honking Lincoln Navigator sporting a flag with the skyline of NYC superimposed on it... another defacement.

There are some really good examples at the flag wall of shame.

And here are the rules. You tell me they aren't bizarre as it gets:

Too many people have become part of the snobby won't get their hands dirty crowd. They have the ability to completely ignore anything unpleasant. That includes the troops they claim to support. They aren't even sure where the 'troops' are. The middle part of our country is still submerged in water and it isn't even in the news. Patriotism now consists of buying some piece of crap (made in China) at Walmart and sticking on your car or pinning it on your shirt. Makes them feel good. What happened to us. ANNA

What to do

If we're ever to realize the lofty words contained in our Declaration of Independence and our Constitution, many changes must take place-and soon. I would put education near the top of this list. By this, I meal REAL education, not the mindless pap we were all force-fed at school. Beyond the three "Rs", kids MUST be taught critical thinking, (true) history, geography, and government, from the local to tne national level. Our children MUST be encouraged to be curious and skeptical. These natural tendencies are discouraged or ignored by most "teachers" in most schools at present. I know this because while suffering through the New Jersey public school system, I literally had to educate myself as (most of) my teachers were teaching a curriculum aimed at turning out slaves for the local factories. My father was a far better teacher than most of those college "educated" fools at public schools, as he had a natural ability to impart knowlege. This ability MUST be present in our teachers because all the education in the world can't make up for its lack. I saw and heard one of the results of poor education in a burger joint the other day. One of the patrons was talking to another about why he wasn't going to vote for Obama. He had the mindless leer seen on so many of the faces of the limbaugh school of "thought", and proceeded to list with his fingers the reasons for his decision. The fact that the reasons were all untrue, and that he spent not one second checking them out was apparent in his speech and demeanor. What was REALLY behind his "thought" process was the fact he was a bigoted numbskull. His loud, obnoxious voice could be heard throughout the building, and made me want to take him by the shoulders and throttle some sense into him, but I realized this would be futile as NO amount of factual evidence would make the slighest dent in his arrogant outlook. This is bad because there are far too many bigoted ignoramuses in our country who shouldn't be allowed to reproduce, let alone participate in important electoral decisions affecting us all. All right; maybe I'm out of line with the "reproduce" part, but if one is faced with loss of American citizenship unless he can pass the same test immigrants must take, maybe we'll start seeing less brain-dead "patriots" like the zero in the burger joint.

the flag pin hypocrisy , and how obama REFUSED to wear one?[ till recently when he saw the need to buy votes from white american morons whom may vote repug-right otherwise!] well I KNOW that was because of both assholes we have now in the white house , whom surely display " ever so proudly" their flag lapels on their suits. that, and sellouts to the system like jay leno; all seem to wear those lapels! and they are the biggest hypocrites, especially those OIL-MEN in power! [ bush-hole and his powerful " dick"$$$$!LOL ]
now for what blondinista was saying about, as in those whom contribute in some small way. I live in a [ 80% repug ] town called southbury CT, where so many seem to be driven to be a part of something; be that sports coaches especially- sports teams being something that compromised 75% of our memorial day parade here in town. that as all the " patriotic" fu*king yuppie and townie parents all cheered those veterans on with their chants of " thank you-thank you!" yet for a town which seems to pride itself on the accomplishments of many of it's willing to contribute citizens, as well as having many with that feeling of " patriotic duty"; it was amazing at how " offended" my presence as transsexual woman, one whom, at 45; pushes the boundaries of " feminine modesty" bullshit by dressing more like a 21 year old riot grrl {or " slut"} many of these so-called " hard working , traditionally patriotic parents appeared to be " shielding their children" upon seeing me; fearing they'd then have to explain my presence to their " impressionable youngsters" but I dress the way I do to prove a point about this town in general; this to the point of being told never to wear just my sports bras to shaws supermarket by a nasty female manager{ whom got herself a complaint of discrimination over her views!} and so, I'll have to admit that, while actively contributing to society online in groups like NOW, other LGBT organizations; I am NOT a "contributing member" toward anything here in the southbury area. my reasons are because of the PEOPLE HERE whom contribute, including those at my former UU church in woodbury. the few times I joined into anything, I felt imposed by their sense of " uncomfortability" toward me; this before and after my transition. myself being loose, outspoken and way far left; when the women seem to act, dress like " garden-party modesty queens" and the men, " conformist businessmen/fathers"; and you never became one of them[ sell-outs] nor wish to; then they will soon make you feel unwelcome in their community! and believe me, being a busy-all-the-time " professional" family-oriented, mainstream person is about as far from whom I am, OR as anything I'd want to be a part of!

THE WHOLE SOUTHERN BPATIST SO CALLED BIBLE BELT IS BASICALLY A BRITISH AGENT WHO ARE TRAITOR TO AMERICAN CUASE AND ARE SADLY THE ONES TO DECLARE PATRIOTISM FOR AMERICA WHILE THEY REALLY MEAN PATRIOTSIM FOT THE ENGLISH RACE.(AND YES MORE THAN 70 PERCENT OF AMERICANS ARE NOT ANGLOSAXONS BUT IT DOES NOT MATTER TO THSE ENGLISH AGENTS.

How britain got hold on america after american independence-- --- This all started soon after Napoleonic war when in 1816 to 1817 The english again attacked america in her southern flanks and the day was saved only because of some French navy mercenaries and French speaking population of Louisiana and such states along with non-english origin americans. But the english invaders infiltrated among that population of American south which today calls itself bible belt (whose god has always been english royalty and who worship only stolen money).By 1850 to 1860 England attacked erstwhile friend (in Napoleonic war) Russia in Crimea along with erstwhile foe (now controlled by unpopular english stooge) France.-how the same pattern is so predictable in case of this intrusive, cancerous exploitative race called english and anglo saxons. At that very time England was actively supporting the slave exploitation, in fact all the big plantation owners were english derived and they owned loyalty not to flag of United states of america but to England. -in other words they were agents of foreign country who wanted to keep south america occupy as foreign power again. The civil war in america was not only supported with money and arms by england but rather england was the instigator of american civil war in order to keep whole of america enslaved and if not possible at least those parts (South) where it could call upon filial loyalty. It was truly a war of race-not against whites and blacks but against anglo saxons versus blacks, Irish, other European peoples .The same would be repeated in future. The confederacy was a traitor to america-a british agents; but ironically that same confederacy flag today is being propagandised by their descendents as symbol of american independence and patriotism. Having lost the proxy war england resorted to the one thing it specialises-terrorism and misinformation. Abraham Lincoln was murdered by the person very sympathetic to british cause. (against Napoleon england had sent several terrorist squads-that is why Napoleon had to declare Himself an Emperor to maintain the clear line of succession to protect glorious French Revolution). It is very interesting that most of the american presidents assassinated were those whom England did not want being elected. By the end of civil war ,instead of disinfranchasising the british supporters (of southern states) and taking away their land or at least redistributing evenly the stolen land, the american govt. was persuaded by britain to spare them and let those southern traitors keep all the stolen land so that drug (tobacco) and cotton would be of assured supply to england. Of course by that time because of fall of Napoleon (brought about not by military might but by conspiracy to embroil the Europeans among each other( conspiracy hatched in London-that was the only english contribution to napoleons' fall-forget waterloo where Austrians and Prussians had contributed most militarily):consequently england got free reign to exploit the rest of the world and amassed wealth. With that new loot the english shopkeepers started not only factory but also bought titles (Always a purchasable item in england) and started giving themselves high sounding titles and names. With that they started the rumour that english people had class and aristocracy and america could rub some off it if it was willing to ply right and play right. During that period england started propaganda of herself being friend of america though in britain news it hardly gave any importance to americans except with contempt. .

Sam Johnson must be rolling in his moldy grave. A little more than a year prior to the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Johnson, a Brit, said that patriotism was the last refuge of the scoundrel. If he were alive today, he'd be amazed at the wisdom and universality of that remark.

We need to re-brand the 4th as "Overthrow the government " day rather "celebrate the State" day.

Has it occurred to anyone that, if a major reason for the presence of 300,000 US soldiers and mercenaries in Iraq is to enable the return of huge oil companies to the oilfieds, that the cost of the program should be paid by those oil companies? Maybe 300,000 wouldn't be needed after all, and all the US troops could come home.

The Essence of Patriotism

The essence of patriotism lies more in dedication to the promotion of principles and ideals than in devotion to one's country or pride in one's supposed freedom.

From this angle, Lee Greenwood is the most contemptible sort of "patriot"... and he panders to the most base sort of humans, the idiots we may call American Patriotic Fundamentalists.

...Nursing Sister Edith Cavell said som of the best words about patriotism on the night before she was due to be shot in Brussels on the 12th October 1915:

"Patriotism is not enough. I must have no bitterness towards anyone".

Thank you for everyones honesty! I think everyone can see the giant size fire work getting ready to go off. Though, I still find many of my fellow American citiznes justifing with our founding history and that "we" are better off then many other countries, we should greatfully be thankful for that!
Well I am not....and I feel that I should not be fed the bullshit that comes with that plate of crap! I voted... and I am taking responsibility for the actions of my casted vote in which placed a man in which I believed and trusted. He lied, manipulated and to date, disperately attempts to further condition me. I as many others failed ourcountry by thinking he was the combator of "evil doing". Well my Angle with a blue tie and with stubbed horns... I feel that "you" should now be the proud Texas cowboy you cliam to be and ride your bull-shit with all of your disfunctional rodeo clowns closely behind you. I am ashamed and very apologictic to those other Americans out their in which my voted counted in disrupting their lifes. Remember the key word, I as you were lied too and manipulated. With this said, If our commander and chief has murdered, cheated and vilated any humanitrian laws, then he should not be excempt from the conviction and should take responsibilty for his actions. This inplace protective law should be revised and taken into reconsideration. This will guarentee that to whomever ever decides to run for president, fully understands the value of his held position(period). It will then take a real man and leader to fill this role, in turn, I wish to believe and intrust the life's of my children under such a "true" father and leader. I would once again be proud to contenuie the pledging of our flag. I am ashamed and fustrated that I can not freely express my liberty to do so!

To the Annas of U.S.A. in the first row and of every other country in tow:
those whom you say admire you are as idiotically (clinical sense) gullible as yourselves, and you're only leading the world into more genocidal hypocrisy by insisting otherwise. I do not see that you are of good will: there is no will in you for wanting to know. Thus you demean and betray life, and not just yours.
Go check Iraq Vets Against War, IVAW.
Your vets are coming back telling you it's all lies.
You don't want to learn even from them.
My father died from wanting to believe in people just like you, from not wanting to know otherwise. Your corporations did that (the ones for soja in this case), all accomplices of rapists and murderers like those of you who work for them. Then my daughter got kidnapped and my son died, because I did not let go of wanting to understand and I was on my own. Where were you with your voluntary work, hey? Fat good you do with that on its own and no guts to back it up.
Your country is the one who gave that power to corporations. Over a century ago. That's how long you've officially become the leading suckers. But truly you were that from your own begining. You stole the Indians' land, you stole their 6-Nations' constitutional basis and still blatantly lie that you are the only ones who owned that much generosity; you stole their dignity and tried to steal their souls, like devils do. You do not adapt: you sucked them dry til there was hardly any blood left; and from thereon you just kept at keeping at it, as Anna says, unto the rest of the world wherever you could, just because you could, and under cover of false generosity whenever you could. Then there's your arrogance, lying that you're better at everything good than anyone else. No, you are not better, you're just bigger and that make you worse more easily by far than it makes you better. Then there's your whingeing that you get slagged off when you “want to talk of difficult things” (you sure deserve your president...), when you have no respect for the other to be as good as you in more difficult circumstances (that equates to being better than you, actually, if you are into comparisons). Even on homosexuality Animals on their own know better than that, but that's too contrary to the
