Hoax, cheap stunt, crank, crackpot, racist, and sick, were some the terms tossed at artist Yazmany Arboleda and his exhibit, "The Assassination of Hillary Clinton & The Assassination of Barack Obama," at galleries in midtown New York. Secret Service agents and NYPD officials quickly moved in and yanked down the assorted painted nooses and garish pictures of Obama from the building. The exhibit may have been an artist's stunt to get his name in the papers but it did again point to the real fear that legions quietly whisper and openly voice about the danger of physical violence to Obama. It is not a paranoid or false fear.

This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the assassinations of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Robert F. Kennedy, and the forty fifth anniversary of JFK's assassination. These three icons represented the best and brightest in leaders, and stirred the hope and longing of millions for change, and a full throttle fight against poverty and racial injustice. These are the exact qualities that Obama symbolizes to millions. But in some ways the luster on Obama's star at this stage of his career outshines that of King and the Kennedys. Unlike the Kennedys he's an African-American. Unlike King he's the first African-American presidential candidate that could win. And unlike King and the Kennedys he has drawn an instant global throng of admirers who see in him as the embodiment of change and a fresh direction for U.S. policy on the war and the easing of global tensions. He's also seen as a potential president who can put a diverse, humane face on American foreign policy.

But these very same qualities stir deep fury, hatred and resentment among a handful of loose-screwed malcontents and hate mongers. The thick list of fringe and hate groups as well as the hordes of unbalanced, violence prone individuals running loose in America can fill a telephone book. The long history of hate violence in America is more than enough reason to be concerned about the danger of violence against prominent political figures.

The first troubling hint of this with Obama came virtually from the moment that he announced in February 2007 that he was a presidential candidate. The personal death threats quickly began flooding in. Obama had the dubious distinction of being the earliest presidential contender to be assigned Secret Service protection on the campaign trail. That didn't satisfy some. Mississippi Congressman Bennie Thompson fired off a letter to Secret Service officials practically demanding that the Secret Service provide all the resources and personnel it could to ensure Obama and the other presidential candidates safety. Thompson didn't say exactly what prompted him to fret over whether the Secret Service was doing all it could to protect the candidates, but almost certainly Thompson heard the whispers and nervous questions from his constituents about Obama's safety. As the crowds grew bigger at Obama rallies and his public visibility grew even greater, the Secret Service increased the number of agents assigned to guard him. The ramp up in protection was a good move. At the same time, Obama campaign aides and volunteers continued to report occasional racial taunts and jibes when they passed out literature and pitched Obama in some areas. This further increased the jitters that Obama was at risk. As the showdown with John McCain heats up in the coming months, the flood of crank, crackpot, and screwball threats that promise murder and mayhem toward Obama almost certainly will continue to pour in. This just as certainly will prompt the Secret Service to tighten security and take even more elaborate measures to ensure his safety. The Secret Service, of course, must spare no effort to make sure he's fully protected.

That won't totally ease the fears about his safety. But it will show that the government is doing everything humanly possible to ensure his safety. That's especially important given the deep doubt and even paranoid suspicion that some blacks have that shadowy government agencies were deeply complicit in the assassination of King, and the fervent belief of millions of other Americans that the CIA or other shadowy government agencies were deeply complicit in the killing, if not outright murder of JFK.

Obama was one year old when JFK was killed. He was six years old when King and Kennedy were slain. But he well knows the horrid violent history of America and the very real danger that violence poses to a charismatic presidential candidate who energizes and excites millions and who promises political change and, implicitly, racial change. He can easily laugh off a phony, self-serving stunt such as an assassination exhibit, but he can't laugh off the danger to presidents and those who aspire to be presidents of that violence.

I agree with your assessment about Obama's dangers Dr. Hutchinson. But Obama and those of us who believed in him from the beginning--unlike some others who have recently jumped on the bandwagon--will press on!! We press on because we owe our ancestors, not the naysayers and political pontificators and paid pundits!! We have a job to do, and I emphasize WE!!! I understand your worry, and I have moments when I share your worry, but this movement will continue to move.

I hate to nitpick, but for the record: Obama was not 1 year old when JFK was killed. I am exactly 13 days younger than John-John (i.e. JFK, Jr.) and 8 months older than Barack. Obama was 2 years and 3 months old. I was 2 years and 11 months old (or I should say a few days away from the age of three.) Trust me on this one: You do not forget the events--good and bad--that happen during your childhood.

Least that's what it appeared to me, last time I was over there checking out the wackos. (After I visit SF, I always visit a few Black Nationalist sites, just to round out the evening's entertainment.)

I couldn't figure out why exactly, except perhaps they thought the rest of America would vote for McCain?

Oh, you expect the nuts to come out of the closet when Obama wins? Don't be silly, the days of Secret Service letting their baby go anywhere -- including the bathroom -- without 3" of bullet proof glass and an armored tank are GONE. If anybody was going to get King Obama, it'd have to be an inside job. Besides that, if some rich dude wanted to change Obama's politics, it'd be easier just to buy him off.

I agree with the above article except for one thing. I don't think there is ENOUGH protection for a prominent liberal seeking high office. It was only 1968 when Congress directed the Secret Service to protect candidates to high office. Hell, if JFK's own brother (and former Attorney General) wasn't good enough for protection, then Dr. King surely wouldn't be (as he wasnt seeking high office at the time) .

Presidents assasinated without protection include Lincoln, Garfield and McKinley. JFK had protection but overrided secret service about having an open motorcade. Teddy Roosevelt was shot in the chest, delivered a speech then went to the hospital and recovered. FDR was shot at , Gerald Ford was fired at twice and of course Reagan was shot.

I think with the handgun murder rate 10 times that of any other country in the world, Obama being assasinated wouldn't surprise me in the least. The only thing that suprises me is that public figures aren't moved around in bullet-proof bubbles !!!

No one would even dream of killing him then - because look who would take over!

Anyway, isn't the Secret Service a bit more competent these days? I wouldn't bet on that if I was Obama - I'd go with someone that corporate America really fears.

The worst possible pick, by the way, would be Hillary Clinton for VP. That'd be a little like signing your own death warrant (politically speaking, at least).

Ya know, since Hillary quit, I figured Earl would finally get behind Obama. Obviously I was wrong.

But to suggest that Obama is likely to be assassinated, is just plain stupd. Yes, stupid. Why?

Because the presidential security is fantastic, thats why.

How do we know? Because the most hated man on PLANET EARTH is George W. Bush, and he seems to be doing just fine (assassination-wise, anyway).

President Obama will be just fine, thank you very much.

Where does all this hate come from?
Posted by: bdcroan on Jun 17, 2008 6:07 AM

My parents were knuckle dragging, child abusing, hate filled people. My mother, a social worker and RN, once commented about the TV show All in the Family: "You wonder how they get by with saying all those things on TV that everyone thinks." She didn't get satire. Even though they were educated, their totally F'd Up childhood turned them into dimwitted, abusive and uncharitable people. My sister has become the new poster-child for evil, along with her high ranking Missle Defense husband. My own experience says that this hate is taught at home through abuse. The victims become the next generation of abusers and join the republicans party. Early intervention in child abuse is critical.

Reason NOT to take Mac's Bait on 'TownHalls ' and Iraq visit

Mac's repeated Robotic insistence on these two issues makes my skin Crawl.
Why would mac- who has proven he can not be allowed to go off script- encourage an 'On your feet' forum. Is he looking to put an even larger foot in his mouth- or is he hoping for a differnet Dem Candidate? someone who ONLY suspended her Campaign, voiced her desire to stay in the race 'Just in Case'?
As for Iraq- who are the top officials working for..The Cheney Group.Col Betrayus has proven he holds now allegience to the citizens of this Country- only the Administration!Who will be safe guarding Sen Obama's visit- some Friends of Mac?
Sen Obama must not take the bait on either of these Lures. 'Thou Protest Too Much' should be his Warning. Besides Why allow Mac to delegate How this Campaign season will go- you give him too much credibility as a force to be considered- He is NOT!In Fact I hope Sen Obama names his Running mate Soon- my preference Sen Chuck Hagel. A great adversary against Mac's sole claim to Fame.then Let Sen Hagel go to Iraq to access the situation with a Real veterans eye!He wil have first hand expereicne to understand what he is being shown and Know what he is Not being shown.
I certainly don't need to See Iraq to know it is a cluster fuck, nor would I know what poignant questions to ask and when I was getting an answer that was not full of shit. Send one of this Military Supporters to report back their expereince, through their Knowledgeable eyes.
Our President does not need to be a Veteran but he does need a Knowledgeabel and TRUSTWORTHY advisor.
Anything Happens to Sen Obama- No 'Lone gun men' LIE will be accepted- we have learned to much, and they have pushed their lies so far we would lay them blame on them regardless. Saem goes for 'Lady' Clinton...Were You Hoping the 3rd time would be the Charm to your Request ???
Mac & Hillary work for the same 'Shadow' Force that has Highjacked Our country. Recent article of 'The Family' just confirmed what we have always known to be the Infiltrators and Traitors to our Country.

Confido
Cave Adsum

The Tipping point
Becoming more human
A Humanitarian
A better human being!
A Loving, Peaceful, Patient,
Caring, Cooperative, Neighborly, Human Being.
Put Citizens First
and
Corporations last.

Have compassion for you neighbor.
Provide Health Care and
A livable minimum wage, for all.

All this hero worship leaves a lot of people stranded
And creates problems.
When we fight over the crumbs at the table who benefits?
Our captor
GREED
Unnecessary suffering is the result of corruption
Government contol has been usurped and taken over by The Corpirates.
When 99% of everything belongs to less than 1% of the People?
Everyone suffers.
A Society should be measured on how well we take care of the poorest amongst us instead of the richest.
The Rich can take care of themselves.
Is building and owning the biggest yacht in the world really important?
How much is enough?
These huge Capital appendages of the Wealthy cause a multitude of Problems.
When GREED runs the show who benefits?

Educate instead imprison.
Stop the WAR!
Take back the Media.
Break up the media monopolies.
Take back the Tax cuts and Tax the oil Corporations.
Close the revolving door and
Kick big business out of Government.
It is an abomination!

Repatriate any resources privatized by BUSH.
There are plenty of countries that get it right and take good better care of their Citizens than we do.
Copy the good example.
Humble ourselves for the common good.

It is time we grew up and
Stopped playing with soldiers.
A gun can never fill a humngrey childs stomach ofr bring a loved one bacjk from the dead.
Peace and Prosperity!
End the WAR and I promise you
Gas will drop by 50%.

IF Obama is Eliminated, it won't be a lone nutbag. WAKE UP ALTERNET !!

It will be the same powers that be in this country that perpetrated the 9/11 attacks.

Alternet seems to be making a "pre-case" for the old "lone gunman" we've been sold on JFK, Martin King, RFK, and Malcolm X.

Don't be naive folks. The powerful consortium that rips us all off day after day, and launches wars for profit, will be who is behind any assasination.

I fear alternet is doing their work in this specious article.

Courage Starts With Us

I love Barack Obama. I love him not for what he’s done, but for what his potential is. At the same time I realize that our peace-loving, Christian, god-fearing nation has killed more great leaders with our violence than most countries ever see. Early on, pre-Iowa, I had concerns about Barack’s safety, but then my daughter was working his campaign and was in the office in Des Moines when his sisters from Africa came in.

I don’t know the story verbatim, but the topic of Barack’s safety was brought up by one of the staffers and in the rhythmic eloquence of the King’s English one of Barack's sisters said “Barack is aware of the danger. Michelle is aware of the danger. And at some level the girls are aware as well. Barack and Michelle have decided now is the time. And if Barack and Michelle, knowing full well the dangers he faces, have the courage to go forward, then we will have the courage to support him.”

I thought about that a lot in the coming days. I’m a Texan, a republican, a middle-aged, white, conservative working in a senior management position in a financial institution in one of the most conservative areas of our country. My office is adorned with Obama stuff and everyone I am associated with knows I am a staunch Obama supporter. I have two youtube videos supporting Obama (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLKtsts4Urk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgQ4qdKCNqY) and entered the 30 second MoveOn.org Obama commercial contest with a video that admittedly isn't very good, but was fun to put together (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=irQ4-RpIglI). I have written numerous editorials to my local newspaper and have worked with the Obama campaign as a fairly high-profile community volunteer here. I’m vocally and highly critical of Bush and his disastrous policies and war and have nothing but very vocal disdain for continuing this "direction" under McCain.

I never offered outward support to Gore or Kerry, even though I supported them. I never voiced my long-running and heartfelt criticism for the little idiot in the White House and his republican party (a party I left in the Texas primaries to support Obama and the democrats).

I didn’t do this because post 9-1-1 I have been, like most the rest of America, too afraid to speak. Shame on me. I never did any of the preceding for legitimate fear of losing my job.

But, I thought about what Obama’s sisters said a lot.

I decided to publicly and enthusiastically support Obama for two reasons. First, when good people remain silent evil triumphs. If I, and the legions of others who watched our current “leader” dismantle Texas economically and retard it even more in terms of its social and moral obligations would have said something, anything, perhaps the last eight years would have been speculation rather than our reality. Second, and most importantly, if Barack and Michelle can accept the risk of his run for the presidency and if they can have the courage to make this run, then I can and will have the courage to support him.

Please, America, this time we cannot be afraid. Each and every one of us, simply by making a donation at barackobama.com, simply by putting up an Obama yard sign, simply by voting for Obama and asking our friends to vote for Obama, can demonstrate that we have the necessary courage.

If Barack and Michelle Obama have the courage to accept the risk, surely each and every one of us can reciprocate in kind.

Obama ‘08

I heard from someone well acquainted with assassinations that the standard operating procedure is for insiders to nurture a relationship with an unstable person who has assassination on his mind. From the inside the agents help him along. They say things like, at 4:00 PM on Tuesday there is a weakness in the security plan. There will be an unguarded entrance in the kitchen...

The reason George Bush hasn't been assassinated is that the corporate powers that could pull off such a maneuver, are well pleased with their puppet. Why assassinate Bush when things are going so well?

Assassination has been a reliable tool in our execution of foreign policy. If a South American or Central American leader won't accept bribes and let our corporations plunder their resources, then plan B is assassination. "Kill 'em, if they can't take a bribe!"

I believe Barack Obama is vulnerable to assassination. It will be corporate America that engineers it once they find some poor deranged racist idiot to pull the trigger.

On the other hand, we should not and must not stop our best efforts to elect Obama. If Obama
chose someone like Al Gore as his running mate, then an assassin couldn't kill the momentum of ideas whose time has come.

I am sure every would be White Supremer and KKKer plots to kill Obama between beers. Some fame and fortune psycho is a lot more dangerous; they make good copycats. As for the shadow government, Obama is the only chance they have to win in Iraq. Then they can fight the good war in Afghanistan. Obama is “against the lobbyists in DC”, how many health insurance lobbyists are there, and how many healthcare lobbyists are there? Maybe it is easier for a black man to hide in the shadows than it is for a white man. Makes a good conspiracy however I already have a better one. Obama is not going anywhere until he sows the seed of a united Islam.

Well, it will be up to us to protect our president. If we discover any threats to him then our responsibility is to report it.

What I'm far more worried about is that, looking at his stated policies, someone whose toes are bound to get stepped on might kill him for those power and money reasons and shift the blame to racist elements, creating a threat to the fabric of our society.

I don't think anything like that will happen though.

It is strange, sad, and chilling that neither the author nor any of the posted comments had a word to say about the propriety -- let alone the legality -- of the Secret Service's shut-down and confiscation of an art exhibit because its subject matter was the hypothetical assassination of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

Even if the exhibit was tasteless (surely) or opportunistic (possibly), these are not adquate reasons for censorship. Only if the exhibition had actually urged an assassination attempt and posed an imminent danger to its subjects would there be cause for even contemplating a shutdown, much less actually executing one.
