Okay, I have to say this now!

Speaking as somebody who has been gay since the womb, I have to say I have NEVER understood the whole Gay Republican thing. To me, it's an oxymoron.

I'm going to say this at the risk of being attacked by if the gay population votes for John McCain they are just plain STUPID. This is a man whose campaign web site has a page dedicated to overturning Roe v. Wade.Do gay people REALLY think he's going to champion gay rights when he's already launched a full-out attack on women?

Get a grip and use your brains. If you want to set whatever progress we've made back a hundred years, by all means, vote for John McCain. If you want at least an opportunity for our rights to advance, vote Barack Obama.

To even suggest that McCain could "split" the LGBT vote is ignorant to the point of being silly.

The Log Cabin Republican organization, such as it is, has never been more than a crank-fringe group within the LGBT community. What notoriety they hold stems largely from how ridiculous they look holding hands with Pat Robertson's party, asking not to be slapped too hard.

The LGBT community polls overwhelmingly Democratic, and always has. We know who (for the most part) has our back, and vote accordingly.

Stories like this one do little but give credit where none is due. Slow news week?

African Americans for David Duke

The Log Cabin (should be Uncle Tom's Cabin) Republicans are like African Americans for David Duke. They are willing to harm themselves socially and legally in order to further their agenda of tax cuts for the wealthy, massive deficit spending and perpetual war. Perhaps they're masochists seeking to expunge their guilt, a product of fundamentalist upbringing. But they can also point to the fact that Bill Clinton promised them the moon and snapped up their contributions, then stabbed them in the back with Don't Ask, Don't Tell and Defense of Marriage. They should be glad Hillary is history.

And I'll say it again. A Gay Republican makes as much sense to me as a Jewish Nazi or a black KKK member. The only people who can be gay and Republican are those who have completely internalized the fear and loathing exhibited by nearly 100% of Republican leadership and those religious nut jobs who support them. Someone posted that for gay people to support Republicans is stupid. I suggest that it displays a self loathing that borders on the suicidal.

I think if the republicans really wanted McCane, they could steal the elections like George Bush did twice. I suspect they do not need to because Obama is already in their corner and in the pockets of Big Business and AIPAC. I think it will be more of the same with Obama.

Reconsider your vote and think about Ralph Nader as your President.

I am a straight businessman who operates a gay friendly company and joined gay business association so I have some credibility when I say McCain is not a friend to the Gays in general. Yes if you approach him with a fist full of dollars he will open his arms...until the money is gone.

Do not trust McCain for change you can believe.

Gay Republicans? Shirley, you gestate!

Ok , So it is like this. I can testify that the ONE gay republican that I met was a borderline violent psychotic. Back when Ronnie the Raygun was lying to the folks about SDI I was slated for a job on the space station project. When he canceled the space station I unwisely vented my spleen around this individual whereupon I found myself nose to barrel with a Thirty eight special.

My sexual Identification is my business; I have always had a choice about whom I find attracts me male or female. So to me this >Gay Gene bullshit is just that. Bull shit!

If I am going to be denied a choice then you are going to fetch up with a little Nightstallion problem. But NO Republican will make that choice for me. NO Republican COULD make that choice for me but, an honest NAZI penis osculator MIGHT make that choice for me if his weapon is a large enough caliber. Thirty eight specials just piss me off.

No Marge I don’t count me as gay. YOU may if you feel more secure thinking just because he is gay he isn’t dangerous, or if he’s bisexual he is wishy-washy and no account. But REPUBLICAN I AIN’T. No sane individual who is individualist and takes pride in the individuality of others will EVER BE Republican on that you may bet your sweet ass.

Republicans do not even have a definition that can approximate an “I” mentality. Their basic dishonesty will not allow personal responsibility, it is always a: we, us and our and if you don’t like that the “or else” proviso identifies you with that nebulous they, those, and others. I cannot speak for you but I am not a: they, that, or other!

"Gay Republicans?" That's a bit like trying to identify "Compassionate Republicans." It reminds me of the guy in the Tom Franks book who voted Republican to get even with Wall Street. McCain would serve the interests of gays only if he goes one step further and ends up a complete screaming maniac.

Here's my thoughts

I don't know if it is always gay self-loathing as so many claim. That is probably true in some cases and definitely in all closet cases.

But unlike closet cases, Log Cabiners showcase themselves and their orientation right out in front of everyone. (Much to the rest of the party's dismay. Tangent: I kind of think of the LCR as the weird kid that nobody wanted to talk to but had to be somewhat civil ["Yes you can sit with us" while thinking 'as long as he doesn't get his cooties on us'] to because his dad was rich and they wanted to go to his b-day parties once a year.) They often wish their candidates would change their mind. They want rights. So it can't truly just be self-loathing.

Sometimes it might be the fact that in some areas Dems are lower than dirt and some it it as easier to break down barriers from within. This, however, is probably a minority as most of the prominent LCRs are from urban areas in largely gay friendly states.

I believe that, rather than self-loathing, Log Cabiners have the desire to keep their (white) rich privilege and couple it with a healthy heaping of denial. The denial that Republicans will never change and Democrats are changing enough to switch. Dems may not be perfect but at least they can stand us, even if they want to quiet us down sometimes. (Tangent: I sort of think of the gay Dems as the kid that everyone thought was fun, funny, and helpful but was too honest and can sometimes offend people with his efforts stick up for what he believes in. [i.e. The teacher is thinking about punishing the whole class for something one person did and he's the first one to shout "That isn't fair" while the whole class is thinking 'Shut up he might let some of us out of it!'])

This makes the most sense to me because, unlike other minorities, gays can hide their orientation when needed. For instance, the fact that Dick Cheney's daughter was a lesbian was brought up, but it was not instantly apparent, aka in anyone's face, unlike Obama's race or Clinton's gender which could not be ignored.

The upper echelon in society already has many not-so-obvious white gays. They have been there longer than the Dems became largely supportive of gays and, frankly, are not willing to give up a wealthy lifestyle. This also would be explain why Repubs can even allow the LCRs to exist because they are often massive $$ donors. This is not the same situation for the many underprivileged minority communities.

That is my take on it. Not really self-haters but more self-serving, or driven by greed rather than ethics or faithfulness to ones community. Especially if they are white, it is easier to accomplish. Let's face it many horrible people would select elite status at the expense of their own community.

Final Tangent: Here's something to think about - After I came out as gay, my dad, eventually, developed a partially gay-affirming stance. This was, and still is, his response to those (i.e. our relatives) who might find out and say negative things: "Well at last he didn't come out as Republican." Although hilarious, it demonstrates party loyalty is often as important to parents as anything else. It might explain why many gay people to stay the same political coloring regardless of the harm that it inflicts of their community. This also helps to explain young LCRs, which confuse me vastly more than their older counterparts.

Look at it from their perspective: you can't change your sexuality but you can swing your political affliation. It's a way of saying, if not explicitly so, "Sorry guys, I've accepted my gay identity as immutable, but at least I can keep you happy by staying a Republican!" It's like the ex-gay alternative. Meaning, contrary to most thinking, it is for those without self-loathing. A compromise, really.

It is my thought that neither will be any champion on moral issues while trying to be elected. There are greater issues facing our society than who is sleeping with who

A split? Only between those who can read and those who can't.

John McCain made a TV spot for an Arizona initiative that would have not only banned gay marriage but also forbidden any spousal rights other than for opposite-sex couples. He has now endorsed the California anti-gay-marriage initiative.

Barack Obama opposes the California anti-gay-marriage initiative.

Anyone who believes in equality for gays and lesbians has exactly one choice in November.
