Senator McCain should not follow the California example

Unfortunately, the writer of this article didn't get it right when they said that Senator McCain should follow Governor Schwarzenegger's California example on homosexual rights and marriage. The cardinal difference, of course, can be seen in the fact that California is an island to itself on the issue of homosexuality - a far cry even from Senator McCain's relatively moderate home state of Arizona where the ruling Republican Party in both federal and state office are substantially more conservative than Mr. Schwarzenegger has ever been.

California is no longer a national leader or harbinger for what comes next for the country. It is no longer 'as goes California . . .' In fact, the second largest state in the nation Texas is much closer to the national mood than California is anymore. Even Florida's notoriously 'moderate' GOP Governor Charlie Crist supports the state's marriage amendment (albeit relatively passively) and is openly against gay adoption (which Arnold supports).

It would be egregiously foolish for Mr. McCain to adopt this stance when the conservative movement (which is in fact still a relatively big minority even in California) is in fact much, much bigger and more influential outside of California. What 'works' in California doesn't work in the rest of the country. Just ask Rudy Giuliani (the most Arnold-like candidate of all) what having big city values did for rallying the GOP base.

Thus, it would be foolhardy to adopt such an approach, especially when most Americans are to the right of California and more importantly that Senator McCain needs his base more than ever before. He should be more worried about what the South, which collectively has the population of more than 3 California's, thinks than what the West Coast thinks.

A republican Governor and the Republican God are credited with positive actions towards Gay Rights.

Who'd have thunk it possible?

The world IS getting better...albeit slowly.

Perhaps McCain should read this? His base, while normally anti-gay rights, also tends to fall in line when the Name of Reagan is invoked..

John McCain should retire. He's a hack. He used to have a backbone, but it's turned to jelly and his mind has turned to mush. He won't support a pro gay proposal of any kind because he's beholden to the base, the right wing fundamentalist nut jobs and, of course, first and foremost to corporate America which doesn't want that boat rocked.

McCain + Hagee does not = gay rights

Sorry, I'm still chuckling over the posts. McCain backing gay marriage is like Hagee, his new bud, backing the Palestinians. Neither will ever happen.

I had read an article somewhere (probably not on AlterNet) which had proclaimed the Governator's rise to power as the first step in the US Reich - which inevitably would allow a foreign-born individual (watch out, McCain!) to be president of the US and start a Nazi takeover...

what I have seen instead (sitting in the suprisingly conservative Commonwealth (its not even a state?) of Massachusetts) is that Governor Schwartzeneger (ok maybe he cant be president if no one can spell it) has a great sense of humor (not like TWINS humor, but the new CA tourism ads humor - have you seen them? they're awesome) and an actual ability to see the good in everyone - he seems to know not only what the people want but also what a government official with a soul (there are so few of those) SHOULD do to make sure that everyone is treated fairly and honestly.

Way to go Arne, I am proud of you for sure now! I am that rarest of rare a former Army Joiner who is gay or maybe bisexual, (I loose my mind sometimes and date women because I am crazy about that stuff.) women put me through college when the G. I. bill wouldn’t. I learned to appreciate the terrible loneliness and abandonment that Job Widows feel.

While you were a kid lifting weights in Germany I was a soldier in Grafenwoehr cocking cannons for Uncle Sam making war on trees and rocks. Ugly business that. If you can keep hold of your guns and the position you have taken regarding gays I will even support your run for president. If that shieskopff McCain can become President you can, he is no better qualified than you are!

I would much rather support you and your family than his, even though I am for States Rights. I am much more conservative than a Confederate or a Republican. In some respects, I am more liberal than any Democrat is. Let’s see if you can stay the course on this Gay support stand, you have claimed
