Murky CIA Activity at Military Outposts

By Sean Gonsalves, AlterNet. Posted April 7, 2008.

Foreign military bases have served as launch pads for American military adventures. Increasingly, they are also being used as CIA 'black sites'.

With California weather in my blood, Cape Cod spring feels like an extension of winter.

What keeps me warm until summer comes is baseball -- and fantasies about vacationing on a tropical island like Guam, where my 6th- and 7th-grade best friend, David Reed, and his Navy dad were transferred to from the now defunct Oakland Navy Base.

"Where's Guam?" I asked.

"It's some tropical island in the North Pacific Ocean. Kinda like Hawaii, but no tourists," Dave said. Then, already honing my gift of asking conversation-changing questions, I said: "Why do we have a base in Guam?"

It wasn't until years later I learned that Guam is a key FOB. That's military jargon for "forward operating base," just one of a million or so military acronyms.

In a world where America is the self-appointed global cop, a FOB is like a police precinct -- a strategically located substation from which hardware and personnel can be quickly dispatched to keep the neighborhood rabble in line.

Diego Garcia is the other key FOB that people who consider themselves well-informed about the Busheviks "war on terror" ought to know about.

David Vine, assistant professor of anthropology at American University and author of the forthcoming book Island of Shame: The Secret History of Exile and Empire on Diego Garcia, details the post 9/11 significance of these FOB's, especially Diego Garcia -- the coveted military outpost in the Indian Ocean's Chagos Archipelago, where the beaches look like one of those Corona beer commercials.

In the 1950s, U.S. war planners were worried about local populations catching the decolonization bug sweeping the Third World. So the U.S. Navy came up with the "Strategic Island Concept," which, in part, identified the British colony of Diego Garcia as a good place to build an isolated base, helping to ensure that former colonial subjects in the Middle East and Africa understood that freedom means whatever the hell the Washington consensus says it means.

But, there was one small problem. Actually, 2,000 small problems -- the Chagossians, with ties to the island since the Portuguese first shipped in slaves and indentured laborers from Africa and India in the late 18th century to work the coconut plantations run by French Mauritians.

When British officials were secretly negotiating a 50-year lease with the U.S. in the 1960s, British diplomats were cutting a deal to give Mauritius its independence -- minus Diego Garcia, which just so happens to be in violation of the U.N. Charter, if you're into that kind of namby-pamby stuff like me.

The Brit playbook called for the Palestine play -- relocate much, if not all, of the indigenous population into a neighboring country to make way for new settlers. For the Palestinians, GB had Jordan in mind. For the Chagossians, it was Mauritius that was to absorb the dispossessed.

Of course, the Chagossian problem would be a lot easier to handle because there were only a couple thousand refugees and not several hundred thousand with milennia-old roots in "holy land." And like Golda Meier famously described Palestinians, the Chagossians have been said not to exist, which explains why most mainstream news accounts of the tiny atoll include some line about it being "an uninhabited island" -- a remnant of British government propaganda intended to "as one official put it, 'maintaining the fiction' that the Chagossians were transient contract workers rather than people with roots in Chagos for five generations or more," Vine observes.

Why don't you call for ABOLISHING the CIA?

If you really want a smaller government that really works, ABOLISHING the CIA, FBI, FCC, DEA, FDA, NSA, etc ... would be the first thing to do.

The American majority doesn't want to be "Dixie Chicked." So these hypnotized, abused citizens suck on infotainment potions and make nice.

Even with a Judicial branch appointed psychologically slow, accomplished Alcoholic, Sadistic, former Cheerleader with meadocre skills and real world life accomplishments in the number one spot of the Executive branch (2 terms) - the Legislative branch approves a uniformed military guy to be the intelligence chief and then gives a pass to a Lawyer to head up the Justice Department who did not know that Water Boarding has been considered TORTURE for years and years. WE THE PEOPLE are further tortued by annual ceremonial offerings of an active duty Army General leapfroging the Joint Chiefs, the Sect. of Defense and the Commander in chief and dictating the prosecution and perpetuation of an illegal War and squatting in "OUR" name.

But don't dare compare the U S of A to Nazi Germany and Cheney/Bush to MR. Adolph Hitler.

OMG, you are Anti-American and must be banished from the cave.

".......it is the duty of the PEOPLE(not the politicians) to ALTER or ABOLISH......"

Oh the sweet joys of denial.

"Girls and boys God wants me and only me to touch you in your forbidden area, and if you tell anyone.... your mother will die."

"Now, what do you want Santa Claus to bring you?" How about I just slip my tiny little stimulus check right into the opening of your m_ f_ box? I promise it will make you feel real good. You know how going to Wal-Mart makes you feel, right?"

Arrest these damn Perverts.

Is the water boiling yet?

Read "Bush On The Couch." George W. Bush has more in common with Jeffery Dahmer than ABE Lincoln, FDR, Truman or any other competent head of state. Douglas MacAuthur was Harry Truman's David Pretraeus. In Truman's day the Constitution of the United States was honored as more than just some antiquated useless piece of paper.

Where I'm from a kid who derives pleasure from inserting firecrackers in the anus of frogs and lighting them is a pretty good size probability of a "CLUE" as to what horror such a child might unleash on Human Beings if allowed to achieve adult age, means and opportunity. Read "Bush On The Couch" the book.

As Gov. of Texas when the innocence of so many death row inmates was being brought to light across the nation, asked about the possibility of error in his State GWB said, "I know they are all guility." In the case of Carla Faye Tucker GWB said he "prayed" and GOD told him to execute her. That, Ladies and Gents is a God Damned LIE and GWB told it, on camera. It's on film. Check the record.

Our government and our nation is in need of rescue. It is being held captive by mad men and women and can not return to us on it's own.

This beautiful NOW is all the time we need.

Thanks Sean G. for helping us to think and act, with conviction and courage. Write on.

Children Are Watching.

Peace.

We have a military dedicated to proving that we need them to continue their ever-expanding presence. As a small boy during WWII, I heard refugees from the Nazi expansion talk about how uniforms ran that nation. What makes us different?

The corruption of GOP administrations is never-ending. OK. Abetted by Demos, to be sure. It seems the only jobs politicians are willing to pay for involve armaments. Fresh water be damned. Clean air likewise.

Give me a political party where preserving the Earth, or at least not fouling our nest, is at the top of the list. Oh, you say? That's what Al Gore offered us? And look what happened to him. We deserve our misery and have brought it on ourselves.

"In the meantime, you might ask your Congressman: why there hasn't been hearings on where - and what - in the world is Diego Garcia and those other FOB's?" he asks...

You mean like Jean Harmon & Nancy Pelosi who were Shocked, I tell you shocked!! when they learned of the "enhanced interrogation techniques" employed on the Bushevik "War On Terra" Detainees lo, the many years ago but managed to contain their "outrage" until the cause of it was revealed in the national press?

Our congresspeople know full-well what's going on, or at least enough of 'em to have made a fuss if making a fuss was what they wanted to do... they don't.

Fifty years from now, when all the collusions between all the corporations, government branches, and both political parties in our 'Iraq adventure' have been fully revealed we'll fully understand why we're walking around with a constant sense of anger, fear, disgust, and betrayal in the pits of our stomachs.

Looking over some of these comments and the story by Sean Gonsalves makes me wonder if most of you believe everything you read. The story was so vague that it doesn't even come close to an indictment of the American Government's efforts to keep most of you safe and mostly ignorant of the real reality of the real world.

Waterboarding, rendition...all mild terms used by those who have never been anywhere in the world and know the techniques and tactics used by other governments, groups and yes, terrorists. Listen folks...freedom is not free, never was and never will. Reading some of these comments made me think way back when I was a young Marine (yeah, you guessed it) and saw another Marine writing on a C-Rat carton this quote that I will never forget. It said "For those who have to fight for it, freedom has a special flavor that the protected never know". I think that sums up why some of you feel the way you do.

I recently spent 2 years in Iraq and whether you believe that we are there based on lies or not, we are THERE and we better WIN! If not, I think a few years down the road your kids will experience hell on earth where waterboarding may be a relief. All governments have their priorities and objectives to reach.

As a major superpower or should I say....the only superpower, we have big responsibilities. We can't afford to adopt isolationism like we did before the rise of Hitler. We need to PLAY the role of policeman of the world if unresponsible governments or groups threaten genocide or the freedoms of any people. Remember the Jewish people in WWII?

I bet some of you would have negative things to say if the U.S. decided to intervene in Rwanda. Heck, I think we should be in Africa because it has become an attractive and profitable dumping ground for nations and arm manufacturers eager to get rid of weapon stocks made superfluous by the end of the Cold War or by technological developments. Well, there's still plenty of time for Africa to draw us into a serious conflict especially when Russia and China start things up there. FOB's are important to the U.S. and I have been to Guam on several occasions and all I see is the military ferrying troops and supplies to places like Okinawa and Japan. There is nothing SECRET going on there. Where did this guy get his information?

I learned a lot a while back about some of the press and how suspicious you should be when you read a controversial story. When I was involved in a lawsuit with a govermental entity, and when I would read the newspaper's viewpoint, I would be in complete shock by the amount of misinformation it contained. It's like, where in the heck did they get that information from? I've been a critical reader ever since and I encourage you to do the same and to keep an open mind when you read too.
