The following is a two-part transcript on the 9/11 Commission Report recently conducted by Democracy Now!. The first explores the role that Karl Rove may have played in influencing the report's findings, and the second looks at how information gained through torture form a major part of of the 9/11 Commission Report.

Former 9/11 Commission Chief Philip Zelikow on Allegations He Secretly Allowed Karl Rove & White House to Influence 9/11 Probe

Philip Shenon, author of The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation, recently suggested on Democracy Now! that Philip Zelikow, the executive director of the 9/11 Commission, sought to minimize the Bush administration's responsibility for failing to prevent the September 11th attacks. Shenon also revealed that Karl Rove repeatedly called Zelikow during the probe. In the following interview, Zelikow responds in his first broadcast interview since the publication of Shenon’s book.

Democracy Now! Co-host Juan Gonzalez: I'd like to ask you, Philip Zelikow, on the issue of -- the book by Philip Shenon, The Commission: The Uncensored History of the 9/11 Investigation, raises obviously some disturbing criticism, in addition, about the Commission's work. I was struck in particular by the questions he raised about your communications with Karl Rove during that period and also that the issue of whether you sought to have your secretary remove the logs of your phone calls with Karl Rove during that period. Could you respond to those issues raised by Shenon?

Philip Zelikow: Well, not only can I respond to them, the commissioners actually have responded and will respond to anyone who asks them, because I was authorized by the Commission to talk to White House officials regularly, as was the general counsel, Dan Marcus. But on this business of Rove, it's a little ironic, since I don't even really know Rove. We had two brief contacts that had to do with University of Virginia business, because I used to direct a presidential research center. In both cases, we handed off the issues to others. The university actually has records on this matter. I told Shenon all of this.

The business about phone logs, actually two of the three people who took my calls don't even remember the story. This appears to be a garble having to do with whether the message slips would be left out on the counter. I mean, this --

Amy Goodman: Well, let me ask you directly this very straightforward allegation of Philip Shenon, that he said that you called in your secretary, shut the door, informed her she was no longer to keep phone logs of your contacts with the White House. She got so alarmed that she -- thinking it was improper, that she went to the chief lawyer for the Commission to alert him about what's happened. Did you tell her not to keep logs of your White House calls?

Zelikow: Yes, well, if someone will just go talk to the chief lawyer of the Commission, you don't have to rely on my account of this. I mean, there other people who have knowledge of these facts. And there's no there there.

Goodman: You did not tell her not to keep logs.

Zelikow: There are no phone logs for the Commission. There are no phone -- the Commission had no phone logs. So I couldn't tell her not to keep logs in a situation where the Commission didn't have phone logs.

Goodman: She kept your logs.

Zelikow: No, I did not have any phone logs.

Goodman: So you're saying you did not -- this is a completely fabricated story?

Zelikow: I did not have phone logs. This is a garble of something that's probably come second -- you know, two or three layers removed from people who don't actually understand the way our office worked. But no one in the office thought that I was concealing anything from the commissioners, and the commissioners don't think I was concealing anything from them, because they were briefed on all these contacts.

And they also knew very well what my relationship with the White House was, since, as the commissioners have recently put it, Zelikow was the White House's biggest problem. And they, the commissioners, if you will just call them and ask them, will point out that I was actually a source of constant trouble for the White House, and the White House had hoped that the Commission would put someone else in my job. And in fact, the White House's biggest supporters, like Bill Safire, were slamming me in their columns during 2004, because I was leading the Commission to knock down the theories they supported.

Gonzalez: There appears to be, at least according to Shenon, one commissioner, Max Cleland, who did raise questions about what was happening on the Commission, and he was removed, according to Shenon, because of his -- or shortly after raising his criticisms of what he thought were cover-ups occurring in the Commission. He was removed. Is there any accuracy to that Shenon claim?

Zelikow: He was not removed. Max resigned from the Commission. There are commissioners who know very well the circumstances of Max's resignation. And if anyone wants to know more about this, he should talk to either Max or Tom Daschle or the commissioners involved, because Max resigned on his own and quite voluntarily for very personal reasons that commissioners know about, but which I was not a part of at all.

9/11 Event Remains Phony as "war on terror"

Along with the grotesque makeover of what was left of the republic to corporate Fascist police state – 9/11 cover-up and its genocide aftermath is the most bald-faced evidence that democracy and the Constitutional rule of law is all but gone at America.

And now folks we get to watch and hear "Turd Blossom" on Faux Noise as an "Analyst". I wondered where the little twit would show up next after leaving the petard he spread behind him in the administration. If you haven't had enough, you can always hold your nose and tune in, and I see he was on one of the MSM news shows yesterday too, one I'm afraid I had to miss.

That goes to show how clueless they all are, doesn't it? Who is going to want to hear the "pontifications" from anyone out of this criminal administration? Especially since he engineered so much of it.

Sorry but am I the only person who is completely lost trying to follow this article?

The interviewer and interview subject might as well be in different rooms talking to different people for all the relation there is between what is asked and what is answered.

I would also say that I think the interviewer is the one who is making things really muddy, they seem to be paying no attention to the answers given and makes no effort to think those answers through and then ask the next question to make the subject clear up any grey areas.

Some will no doubt blame the subject and continue to say the report was a whitewash, but personally I feel this interview is the whitewash as no questions where asked that could enlighten us as to what actually happened.

the problem with the 9/11 commission was not that it tortured anyone, it is that from the beginning it did not intend to discover the truthabout what happened, just to look for a convenient scapegoat.

WE KNOW that WTC building 7 and the twin towers were demolished with explosives--anyone looking honestly at he evidence that is widely available now can't deny it. It is a FACT, not a theory or anyone's opinion.

For Amy Goodman and others to continue to dance around the issue seizing on literaly anything to avoid admitting the ugly truth is just sad. Is Amy Goodman really this scientifically illiterate?

More and more people are realizing every day that the 9/11 truth movement is not a fad or a cleverly concocted conspiracy theory, but a real citizens' awakening to the extent of how bad things have gotten.

It's not just about torture and illegal wars overseas--it is the fact that our country has slipped out of our control. It is about the fact that so many people have been lied to about so much for so long. It is about the fact that we have a so-called ally in the middle east with its OWN designs on regional hegemony that involve the US only as a useful idiot.

We know 9/11 was a fraud. We know the truth, and I speak increasingly as WE THE CITIZENS OF THE US, not as WE THE 9/11 TRUTHERS.

People like Amy Goodman will continue to try to deflect attention away from the explosive reality for as long as they can get away with it, but fewer and fewer people are listening.

Get used to us America, because not only are we not going anywhere, you will soon be joining us and thanking god every day that you finally woke up.

The 911 Cover-up Continues

There is only one way this conspiracy can one day be unraveled: A New, Independent, Truthful, investigation must be held. This time Bush and Cheny will not be allowed to testify together and must answer questions under oath. Bush without Cheny there to hold his hand and guide him, would probably spill his guts. The great "decider" is no mental giant. A Zogby poll showed recently that a majority of Americans believe a new investigation is in order. One big question for starters, (What caused building #7 to fall down in 10 seconds, hours after the first 2 were hit?" Only a new investigation will answer this any many other questions. We are still waiting to hear the TRUTH!

A picture of the pasty-faced worm known at karl rove, I'm reminded of everything that's wrong with our country. This arch criminal, hiding in plain sight is responsible for more death, ruined lives, and misery, than anyone save perhaps, cheney. The existence of rove is STILL largely unknown by our people. Don't think so? Ask ten people at random who rove is, and I'll bet youl'll get an "I don't know" from at least seven of them. I've done this several times myself, and the responses are consistent. How do we fight something like this? We must EXPOSE rove and the other crooks around them for what they are, then go after them through legal means. This our responsibility as citizens, one which we've ignored so far.

The key point: foregone conclusions
Posted by: Beagle17 on Feb 11, 2008 8:03 AM
Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The first bit by Michael Ratner captures the large significance of this probe by Amy Goodman:

Michael Ratner: ...I was shocked by it because we all know that our own court cases have said evidence from torture is not reliable. And here you have a report that's supposed to tell us what actually happened in its key chapters on the planning of 9/11, what actually happened when the people came into the country, and you look at those footnotes, and they're based on torture. What it has to tell you is to be very, very skeptical about a number of the conclusions in that report. You just can't rely on evidence of torture. We all know that. Think about it. If the Bhutto assassination -- if the government of Pakistan issued a report, and we knew it came out of torture, would any of us be sitting at this table believing it? Would we believe that about the assassination of Kennedy, if it came out of tortured people? No, we wouldn't. Why are we accepting this?

Assuming there was a conspiracy and that the findings of the 9/11 commission are wrong, then it is a given that the commission must have been steered toward foregone conclusions - the bane of science and just process. What better way to do this than with confessions of details of the plot by the captured terrorists?

Thus, any evidence that the confessions were obtained under torture immediately discredits the entire conclusion of the report. The investigation must be started over and this tainted evidence thrown aside. Surely, with a crime as huge as this one, evidence other than confessional testimony must be substantial enough to form an impartial assessment of what really happened.

Prayers to Amy Goodman and all her cool friends!

They have been covering up this Atrocity since Day One.

Conditioning the people into believing that it was some Patsy
Backed up by a chorus of lies from Talking Heads lining their pockets.
911, 911, 911
While the complete opposite is true.
They did it!
In the morning.
In the bright light of day.
Just follow the money trail.
Who benefited the most?
Everything went according to plan.
First they stole the election,
Then took over the Military, NORAD, and FAA.
Circumvented all the safety systems,
That should have prevented it.

STAND DOWN 911!
With Dead Eye at the helm.
Belching commands from his Bunker!
Creating the worst Tragedy in History.
No response.
Just diversionary exercises and plenty of phony excuses.
Intercept planes flying in the wrong direction.
While 67 times in the previous year the system worked.
Planes were escorted or shot down.
They can Destroy the evidence but,
The cruel fact remains.
They did it.
They’ve kidnapped this country and
Sold it into Bondage.
To Their Master Blaster:
GREED
.
Lock stock and barrel of Fascist, Dirt Bag, Monkeys.
No Investigation for two years!
Then Kissasser
Then Zelikow the author of
The New American Century of Fascism himself.
The Architect of 911 shows his ugly face!
Lies! Lies! And more Lies!
Zelikow keeps the secret under careful lock and key.

What are they hiding?
Everything!
The shredders are going full blast.
The escape pods warmed up!

Three buildings disappeared and with them your:
Freedom, Rights, Jobs and Country.
A Billion in Gold to boot!
Goodbye American Dream!
Hello project for a Zio-Nazi 21st Century!
Brought to you by Cor'pirate' Crooks.

The same thing that used to get them here, can also be used to get rid of them.
They are afraid of the light of Day.
Truth and Accountability.
You can see the wheels of deception spinning
Inside the back of his head.
As he lies!
A Professional Liar
The truth is hidden
A Worthy subject for
A taste of his own medicine!
How long would it take to get the truth?
If someone was tickling his feet?

Study the formula for their success and
You will discover the formula for their Defeat.

is not the integrity of the evidence that it looked at but the overwhelming evidence that it never even acknowledged or addressed in the first place. Like, oh I don't know, say building 7 the third building to fall which was never hit by a plane (and about a billion other things).

Thank you for printing Zelikow's response to the accusations of neglect by the Commission. His answers to bloviated questions satisfy me.

The fact that Democracy Now pursued those suspicions of conspiracy rather than topics that are far more cogent--such as, what happened to team that the Clinton administration had working on bin Laden, when Bush took over--borders on yellow journalism.

Goodman and her crew can hide behind the excuse that they only asked what needed to be asked, but that does not work. When the resource for the questions amounts to a political cartoon, they come off looking the fool.

..they are going to have to stop saying it was a 757 jetliner that hit the Pentagon. No such item was never found. It could not have just disappeared. It did not all burn away to nothing in a half hour. There were never any seats, luggage, a tail, bodies, engines--ever found! No. It all went into that 16-foot hole.

Rove and Zelikow hardly know each other
Posted by: channing on Feb 11, 2008 2:12 PM

Lets see, First Karl Christian Rove:

"He was an active participant in Richard Nixon's 1972 Presidential campaign. As a protégé of Donald Segretti (later convicted as a Watergate conspirator)" ... The company you keep, the loyalties you owe?

"In the fall of 1970, Rove used a false identity to enter the campaign office of Democrat Alan J. Dixon, who was running for Treasurer of Illinois. He stole 1000 sheets of paper with campaign letterhead, printed fake campaign rally fliers promising "free beer, free food, girls and a good time for nothing", and distributed them at rock concerts and homeless shelters, with the effect of disrupting Dixon's rally" ...Familiar?

"On September 6, 1973, three weeks after announcing his intent to investigate the allegations against Rove, Bush chose Rove to be chairman of the College Republicans." ... CIA George HW helping his true friends all along.

"Rove married Houston socialite Valerie Mather Wainwright, on July 10, 1976." ... Houston, do we have a problem?

"In 1977, Rove was the first person hired by George H. W. Bush for his unsuccessful 1980 presidential campaign" ... CIA HW Bush sees a true and proven Goebbels in the making.

"Later in 1977, Rove got a job as executive director of the Fund for Limited Government, a political action committee (PAC) in Houston headed by James A. Baker" ... What on earth did Baker have to do with Bush I, II, Iran Contra, or the Stolen 2000 Elections?

"Selling Karl Rove & Co. was a condition that George W. Bush had insisted on before Rove took the job of chief strategist for Bush's presidential bid."

"After the presidential elections in November 2000, Rove organized an emergency response of Republican politicians and supporters to go to Florida to assist the Bush campaign's position during the Florida recount." ...no, couldn't be.

"On June 30, 2001, Rove divested his stocks in 23 companies, which included more than $100,000 in each of Enron, Boeing, General Electric, and Pfizer. The same day, the White House confirmed reports that Rove had been involved in administration energy policy meetings while at the same time holding stock in energy companies including Enron."

And Zelikow:

"After studying at the University of Houston, Zelikow completed a B.A. in History and Political Science at the University of Redlands, in southern California. He earned a law degree from the University of Houston Law Center"

"In 1989, in the George H. W. Bush administration, Zelikow was assigned to join the staff of the National Security Council." ... CIA HW wants Zelikow in the NSC for what?

"One of his colleagues there at the same time was Condoleezza Rice" ... nothing to do with Chevron or the Houston Republican Machine of course.

"In 1998, Zelikow moved to the University of Virginia, where he directed, until February 2005, the nation’s largest center on the American presidency, served as director of the Miller Center of Public Affairs" ... Zelikow couldn't be involved in the re-writing of Presidential History from that position could he?

"For a month in late 2000 and early 2001, Zelikow served on President Bush's transition team" ...which had no dealings what so ever with Bush's Chief Strategist and Chief of Staff, they hardly know each other.

"In October 2001, Zelikow was named to a position on the President's Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board [PFIAB], and worked on other task forces and commissions as well." ... Golly, this Zelikow guy is really out of the loop, ain't he?

ZELIKOW IS JUST PASSING THE BUCK!

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
This is just a PR exercise in damage control by Zelikow. He's coming on Democracy Now! to try and kill the story before it hits the mainstream media.

Zelikow's main concern seems to be "Who is gonna be left holding the bag for this massive fiasco?".

Give him credit for coming on the show, but it's all very evasive. He refuses to flatly deny his former secretary's claims that he called her into his office and told her not to keep logs of his phone calls. He deflects questions about Max Cleland's sacking/resignation.

It doesn't seem to bother Zelikow too much that the information which formed the cornerstone of his Commission's findings was based on information extracted by torture. It doesn't seem to bother him that the whole "official story" of 9/11 could be a lie. What bothers him is whether or not he is the one who is going to be blamed for this mess.

The Bush administration is now working toward executing the prisoners who were tortured to provide this evidence to the Commission. It is critically important that they not be executed, and that they have their day in a free and fair court, to give their own version of events.

Make your voices heard NOW, people!
