The Funniest Stories of 2007

By Will Durst, AlterNet. Posted December 27, 2007.

What's the difference between Paris Hilton and Scooter Libby? Twenty-three days.

Okay. Just so you know: the Top Ten Comedic News Stories of the Year are as different from the Top Ten Legitimate News Stories of the Year as Peppermint Mini Marshmallow Froot Loops are from porridge. For instance, the Pakistani government transition didn't make our list. Why? Because it has the humor quotient of cider vinegar foot baths. Except for President Musharaff's first name being Pervez. Short for Perv? Prez Perv. Nice alliteration there. But funny? No. Subprime mortgage crisis? Yeah, right. Rusty-nail-through-the-bottom-of-your-Reeboks funny. Myanmar, Virginia Tech, you see my point. So let's go my route. Here are the stories of '07 that were the most lampoonable.

10. Jimmy Carter called President Bush the "worst President ever." And by the very nature of that statement, that would have to include... Jimmy Carter. "Worst President ever" by Jimmy Carter. That can't be good--like having your drug intervention hosted by Lindsay Lohan.

9. David Petreaus, the Surgin' General said Iraq looks more and more like America every day. Apparently they want us out of there too. Claims the government is paralyzed by petty partisan squabbling, so maybe they are getting the hang of a western style democracy.

8. Hillary Clinton asked the public to help pick her official campaign song. Here's some additional suggestions. The Theme from Shaft. Its Too Late Baby. Devil with a Blue Dress. She's Cold as Ice. The Bitch is Back.

7. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad demonstrated the concept of free speech in America. Both he and Bush at the UN on the same day. Think of it: a religious fanatic who sponsors secret prisons and has antagonized the whole world and an Iranian, both addressing the General Assembly.

6. Rudy Giuliani tried to espouse traditional family values on the campaign trail. And the fact that he's had three wives just means he's extra traditional. The Christian Coalition threatened to form a third party if Rudy Giuliani becomes the Republican nominee. Wonder what they'll call it? Too bad "the Taliban" is already taken.

5. Karl Rove and Attorney General Alberto Gonzales both resigned. I'm thinking the only reason he kept supporting Gonzales is because "Attorney General" and "Alberto Gonzales" both start with AG, and it was the only way he could remember who was filling the position. Like a mnemonic device. Karl Rove: proof positive that the Devil and the Pillsbury Dough Boy had more than a passing acquaintance.

4. Mitt Romney's tried to run a perfect campaign. Looks like he's been dipped in a polyurethane bath. Flip-flopped so much he's in danger of triggering a Stage Four John Kerry Alert. His campaign ads should close with "I'm Mitt Romney, and I both approve and disapprove of this ad."

3. Paris Hilton was offered community service, but the community declined. Q. What's the difference between Paris Hilton and Scooter Libby? A. 23 days.

2. Dick Cheney's Chief of Staff Scooter Libby was fined a quarter million dollars which was paid for by the Scooter Libby Defense Fund, which you and I know as Halliburton. His 30-month sentence was then commuted by President Bush, who apparently is not just the Decider, he's also the Commuter.

1. Idaho Republican Senator Larry Craig isn't gay and didn't quit. He may be homosexual, but he is so not gay. Like a Rorschach blot of not gay. Said he was entrapped. Cop must have worn some fetching footwear. Italian design, really shiny and the laces were perfect. Should have gone with the Restless Leg Syndrome defense.

Digg!

It's hard to "make funny" these days

None of these tickled my fancy, not even a bit.
It's so difficult to make jokes about people and events when the issues are so important, the interpersonal atmosphere created by the media so toxic (present company included), the need for solutions so urgent.

And did the Hillary jibe Have to be so insolent and irrelevant?

While all of the stories mentioned above were pretty damned funny, no question about it, the absolutely funniest story of the year was this:

In August, the director of National Intelligence walks into the Oval Office and informs the First Fool that they have new information on Iraq's supposed WMD program. When asked by the White House Press Corps why, if that was the case, he continued to rattle his sabre and conjure up images of WW III and mushroom clouds for a full three months after the fact, the idiot-in-chief informs them that he wasn't told what the ne information was, nor did he bother to ask.

Now that's a scream!

I usually enjoy all of Will Durst's comments, but I think he fell on his ass with his comment on Jimmy Carter.

MY reply to Kathleen Parker on Hillary and Religion--

Hillary was a Lay Minister in her Methodist Church.
Hillary has always been a regular attendee at church. Unlike you know who.
Hillary loves her Bible.
Hillary has always prayed to God for Guidance. With her family.
In private as directed by Jesus not on street corners as the hypocrites.
Hillary cares for the less fortunate as Jesus.
Hillary loves Peace On Earth not Wars
Hillary is against killing via executions.
I disagree with her on Gay marriage and permissive abortions..
Her husband had it correct and shut out opponents with his--
Safe-Legal-Rare--Rape-Incest-mom's life
Opponents are "mommies killers" let mom die to save itsy bitsy sperm and egg.
They will eventually want to outlaw Masturbation--Menstrual Period--Wet Dreams.
They destroy eggs and sperm which prevents life.
Hillary loves her family. She suffered to keep her marriage intact.
She stuck by Bill's adultery due to her strong love for him as a total person not just one bad virtue amongst many good ones.
She knew her husband was 99% pure .
Hillary earned $23,000 one year as First Lady of Arkansas when her fellow lawyers made hundreds of thousands.
She spent a year and visited every school district working to improve schools.
Hillary is no Smearer.
Hillary does not Lie(intent to deceive)
Hillary respects others even when they disagree.
Hillary invited to the White House one of most evil smearers. Richard Melon Scaife.
Hillary has a brilliant mind. Not alcohol scorched one.
Hillary will hire experts in each area to manage our government. Bill did same.
One of major reason for Clinton's success was the experts he hired in the government.

This is a sad commentary on the last 7 years. Trying to turn it into humor doesn't work. And yes, I do appreciate a good laugh. ANNA

Taliban

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The comment about Taliban would be pretty funny except I am informed that “Taliban” means “the telling,” that is the Inquisition. I submit that today’s GOP stands in relation to the John Birch Society the same that the Taliban stands in relation to al Queda.

The lead item about Pakistan is not funny at all given today’s headlines. Political leaders opposing the global Taliban don’t last long anywhere in the world.

"They hate us for our freedoms," neocon mantra.

Current rating: 5    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
So we'll take away habeas corpus, freedom from torture and the personal liberty to be safe from spying. Still hate us?, we'll toss the Constitution in the crapper. Still hate us(?) we'll outlaw freedom to assemble and one person one vote elections.
How funny is that?

Need More Like Carter

Jimmy Carter was one of the most moral, kinder... and honest Presidents America ever had. I do not know why he is so persecuted by dumb-shits like Durst! He was a true man that represented the people...And he may be the last to fit this catagory. Was Durst even born to witness this era? Damn it... We have so many dumn-shits in America today!

These comments/remarks are not really funny and the ones about Hilary are not just trite-they are sexist: Please people: "The Bitch is Back"?!!! Why do left wing, progressives settle for this kind of stuff? I think this guy has been skating on very thin talent for a long time... I know there are better and funnier writers out there...

Will Durst is very talented
Posted by: doinaheckuvajob on Dec 28, 2007 2:35 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
because even this not very good piece had its moments.

Putting Larry Craig #1 is correct. I didn't laugh at Durst's joke about him, but I do laugh at him every time I see him speak or see a headline on him. He is the #1 biggest joke in public life today. So Will D. got that right.

But I did laugh at the Romney joke: 'His campaign ads should close with "I'm Mitt Romney, and I both approve and disapprove of this ad."' The Democratic nominee should pay Will a few bucks just for that joke if they run against Mitt.

The top ten funniest stories is a trap, something Durst figured was expected of him this time of year, so he forced it. The next time Will be very funny I'm sure.

And Will, you did go too far with the 'b' word song about Hillary, besides, it's been said before by dimwit wingnuts in their website comment threads. You can do better.

I thought these were hilarious... of course, I'm a Ron Paul supporter even though I register Democratic. I'm also over 60 -- old enough to remember when we didn't have to be politically correct all the time.
