Why Is Bush Smiling in Iraq Photo Ops?

OK, throw another $50 billion down the rat hole that is the Iraq occupation. It's only money, if you ignore the lives being destroyed. That's what the White House is asking for, in addition to the $147 billion in supplementary funds already requested, and Congress will grant it after Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker follow President Bush's photo op in Iraq's Anbar province with a dog and pony show of their own.

Meanwhile, the Democrats are totally cynical about this continuing waste of taxpayer dollars and of American and Iraqi lives, and, wanting Bush to hang himself with his own rope, they will deny him nothing.

In the effort to retaliate against terrorists who hijacked planes six years ago with an arsenal of $3 knives, this year's overall defense budget has been pushed to $657 billion. We are now spending $3 billion a week in Iraq alone, occupying a country that had nothing to do with the tragedy that sparked this orgy of militarism.

The waste is so enormous and irrelevant to our national security that a rational person might embrace the libertarian creed if only for the sake of sanity. Clearly, the federal government no longer cares much about providing for health, education, hurricane reconstruction or even bridge safety, as the military budget now dwarfs all other discretionary spending, despite the lack of a sophisticated enemy in sight.

Numbers are boring, and the media act as if there is no difference between a million and a billion dollars thrown at the military -- let alone the trillion-dollar projected cost of the Iraq war. That last figure is well documented in a solid study out of Harvard co-authored by Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz but ignored by the mass media.

So too a recent authoritative report from the non-partisan Government Accountability Office that, despite the $44.5 billion in U.S. taxpayer dollars already poured into reconstruction, little detectable progress has been made in Iraq's crucial oil and electricity systems.

Remember when Paul Wolfowitz, then the Pentagon's resident neocon genius, assured Congress that Iraqi oil money would easily bear the entire cost of America's Iraqi adventure?

Now the GAO tells us that, even after spending an additional $57 billion on the Iraqi oil and electricity infrastructure, and assuming peace is restored, Iraq would still not produce enough oil and electricity to meet local demand until the year 2015.

Aside from corruption and the lack of security, the biggest problem in supplying Iraq with electricity is that the national electrical grid has broken down, and different factions, divided largely along ethnic and religious lines, are grabbing what they can. This kind of anarchy is emblematic of the new, emerging Iraq, in which the central government has declining sway over the nation's decisions.

That latter point was underscored this week by Bush's happy-faced visit to a highly fortified and isolated American outpost in Anbar province. After posing gamely with the troops at the Al-Asad base, Bush celebrated the return of Sunni areas to the control of U.S.-armed militias -- composed largely of former insurgents who have at least temporarily decided that their Shiite rivals, currently in control of the central government, are a more pressing enemy than the American occupiers.

Speaking of one such group of Sunnis trained by the Americans and dubbed the "Volunteers" by their instructors, a U.S. soldier told The Washington Post, "I think there is some risk of them being Volunteers by day and terrorists by night."

That is exactly what has occurred on the Shiite side, where anti-U.S. religious groups have completely infiltrated the American-trained Iraqi military and police forces. In Iraq's Shiite-controlled south, the domination of the military and police by the fiercely anti-American Madhi Army and other militias was ensured by the final withdrawal of British troops from Basra, Iraq's second-largest city and a vital center of oil production, on the same day that Bush visited Iraq.

Instead of the liberated, united and democratic Iraq promised by this invasion, we are left with a nation ruled by religious fiefdoms sustained far into the future by U.S. taxpayers.

The French and the Germans, hoary veterans of various failed European adventures in imperialism, warned us about precisely this outcome. While U.S. troops spill blood to guard broken oil pipelines, the Chinese and others go merrily about the world buying up black gold on the open market. But hey, don't worry about your tax dollars and the waste of lives -- eat some freedom fries and learn, like our president, to keep smiling.

This article should be the lead on Alternet today...

"wanting Bush to hang himself with his own rope, they will deny him nothing."
==============
I've been saying this all along. The Democrats can't win politically due to their lack of principles and endless sellouts...so they're now playing with the lives of our troops to drag Bush's catastrophe on until the next election cycle for their own political gain.

"Clearly, the federal government no longer cares much about providing for health, education, hurricane reconstruction or even bridge safety,"
==========
Absolutely correct...This is the end result of embracing an ideology where one views the government as THE problem and never a solution...so government posts are filled with crony political and ideological supporters who are in the game only for their personal empowerment/enrichment...damn the greater good of the nation.

Reminds me of an adolescent who's about to be confronted about some bad behaviour.

Most parents have had the experience of making a child return something they took without paying for.

Wouldn't it be the right thing to make bad boy Bush own up to his wrongdoing by making him spend the rest of his life personally apologising? He has stolen the right of millions all over the world to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. His hijinks have created untold human misery which can never be undone.

He should be made to say "I'm sorry" to all the Iraqi people who have had to live in a hell of his making. He should have to say "I'm sorry" to every single relative of every dead soldier and "I'm sorry" to every soldier with mental and physical wounds. He should have to say "I'm sorry" to each of the abandoned residents of New Orleans. And he should be made to say "I'm sorry" to every US taxpayer whose hard-earned bucks he has callously misspent.

His friends made him do it? Nah, they were all in it together!

Bush is smiling or smirking because he is delusional.

What infuriates me to no end is how our top elected Democrats act supremely confident that if they simply cave in to Bush, he will sink like a stone and bring the GOP along with him. They condescendingly dismiss critics of their self-proclaimed savvy, sophisticated approach as hopelessly naive or too politically obtuse to comprehend "how things work" in Washington.

If our Democratic leaders could take a pause in congratulating themselves on their tactical brilliance, they might notice that their strategy necessarily involves the continued deaths of U.S. soldiers and innocent Iraqis. Although they problably would deny it, I can't help but think that top Democrats are still quaking in their boots at the prospect of being called unpatriotic, America-haters, unwilling to "support the troops," blah, blah, blah.

In other words, Democratic leaders are willing to talk tough until the Republicans start saying black is white, up is down, the surge is working and all of the other bogus talking points they inevitably trot out.

Here's an idea: Instead of cowering and retreating at the first sign of criticism, how about pushing back? With vigor and passion? The beauty of this approach is that to do this, all you have to do is tell the truth. Call this administration on its lies, and don't be reluctant to call them exactly that.

Mike Gravel and Dennis Kucinich are the only Democratic candidates who come remotely close to doing this. If the top-tier candidates did the same, they might be surprised at the reaction. Instead of driving people away, they might find voters flocking to support a candidate who's willing to say that the emperor is buck naked. I know I would, but I'm not holding my breath.

My Husband and I

Two small queries:
1. Why did the Warrior President not appear in one of his generally favored quasi-military drag costumes? He appeared onstage in a business suit, more befitting for a businessman who is getting richer every second as the price of oil soars.
As usual, Bush talked to a captive military audience.
2. Why was the Secretary of State along for the ride? Any connection with Laura’s “pinched nerve?”

My Husband and I
To the tune of Cigareetes and Whiskey and Wild Wild Women, as recorded by Red Ingles.

Oh my husband and I we're doin' quite well
Sendin' thousands of Muslims to fry in Hell
A new Middle East is what we demand
If we don't get it, we'll make it all sand

A new Middle East to my husband's plan
Our Crusade's gonna make it a bran' new land
And those who don't like it will surely fail
My husband and I we shall prevail

We're now the rulers, we're runnin' the world
My husband decides and his foes I derides
Together we make up a regular team
With Laura alongside, it's all quite a scream

Cashel Boylo

The constant political wars have left us all numb, ineffective at change, and in the end uncaring.

We have bred and allowed the political creature to meld with the business of business beast, and they in turn found the market maker monster to tell us what we are, what to think, and what not to think.

As a result our times reflect the importance of nothingness.

They have created the most feared creature of all....us.

Bush, Cheney and the rest of the conspirators are receiving substantial kick-backs in exchange for all of the "no-bid", "cost-plus" contracts handed out to friends and political contributers. They get paid for food, water and housing provided to every living soldier on the ground, then they get paid for supplying the body-bags and transporting the cadavers home. That's a "win-win" situation for BushCo! No wonder a "surge" sounded like such a great idea to the loyal Bushies!

So of course he's smiling! He's richer than ever and all he has to do is continue stalling Congress to keep the money rolling in. He doesn't care how many people die or who they are, as long as it isn't him.

The Dems may be pursuing an election strategy as claimed, but day by day it seems apparent that they have merely bought in to the big swindle, either by acquiring stock in the profiteering corporations already in business, or by getting involved in starting their own. All the speculation about complex rationales behind Democrat inaction is probably misguided - they keep verbalizing opposition to the war because that's the party platform, but now that they are also getting rich, they don't actually want to take any action which would interrupt the flow of cash.

If they're not against him, they must be with him!!

About everything. He doesn't know that things around him are falling apart. When he shows up for a photo-op they make sure nothing will be there to upset him. When the soldier in Iraq the other day told him that their time off between deployments was not long enough Bush had no idea what he was talking about. Bush is protected from everything by everybody. He's easily upset and gets angry at the least provocation. Simply put, he's crazy. Thanks, ANNA

Suppose one were to take the picture of Bush and Petraus laughing and superimpose it on a photo of flag-draped coffins ready to be shipped home. OR, maybe superimpose it on a photo of Fallujah leveled. OR, superimpose it on a photo of internal refugees living in tents. Well, I guess that would be disrespectful.

Think the Dems and all should be very careful inwhat THEY wish for...Bush and his brigade have sucker punched us all all along from the very git go of their occupation of the WH and all that goes with...and as it continues, the Dems response has been dismal at best with but whines that can NOT expect any too much as they are but the minority groupings and blah, blah, blah..even now with the marginal "majority", they STILL are DISMAL AT BEST and FAIL to stand up and proclaim at least some sort of OPPOSITON to the various ROLLED OVER WHATEVERINGS and hence, they remained tagged as WIMPS and INCAPABLE themselves but as BUT the only "hope" of PERHAPS a halt to some of the madness let loose by the Bush Brigade, they may well get to be a larger majority in 08 and even possibly the WH as well and LEFT HOLDING A REALLY BIG BAG OF UNRELENTING SCITTE that has NO easy answers/solutions and will be further riddled with further failures and THEY will then be denounced for having caused it all !!! The handwriting has been on the walls for sometime, guess many are just to dense or overwhelmed to comprehend or read !!!!

at our pathetic attempt to rule or control his country better than he did.

Sure he killed people (and we have the death penaty) a kill is a kill. And we deny many babies basic health care in what is commonly billed as the most wealtiest country in the world.

Yes Saddam is laughing at Geo Bush and America from his grave. He warned us about the Mother of All Wars, but I think many thought he was talking about a military war. Bush in particular didn't understand something that Saddam did, those pesky religious factionous wars are far more harder to fight and win than the military ones. That's probably why he ruled with such a mean heavy hand.

Oh, well America.....with all that money being spent for this war that we had to have against any Muslims we can all but forget about that National Health Plan. The money is being wasted on on a National We Hate The Muslims War.

Wonder if that's why Bush started it.
