Democrats Can't Wait Around for GOP Defectors to End the War

By Arianna Huffington, Huffington Post. Posted July 10, 2007.

No matter how many Republicans abandon the president on Iraq, it is Democrats who must seize this moment and take the lead in bringing our troops home.

This is the start of a critical stretch on Iraq, with the White House looking to run out the clock until Congress takes its summer vacation, and Senate Republicans struggling to split the Iraq war baby -- moving away from the president's stay-the-course stubbornness while not embracing troop withdrawal.

But no matter how many Republicans abandon the president on Iraq, it is Democrats who must seize this moment and take the lead in bringing our troops home. They simply cannot wait for a three-decades-later sequel to the famed march down Pennsylvania Avenue taken by the wise old men of the GOP to convince Richard Nixon that the end game had begun. Because as bad as Nixon was, George W. Bush is infinitely worse.

So while Republican defectors from Bush's war policy need to show they're serious with their votes, Democrats need to show they're serious by giving the Senate a bill to vote on that would actually end the war.

At the moment, the Democratic plan is to introduce a series of amendments to the defense authorization bill that will force Senate Republicans to either turn away from the White House or stay on board an $8 billion a month runaway train that has left the tracks and is heading off the edge of a cliff.

So far, these proposals look like a mixed bag -- and run the risk of taking the focus off where it belongs: pushing a concrete plan that includes binding start and end dates for withdrawal.

For instance, Hillary Clinton is planning to team with Robert Byrd to introduce a proposal that would revoke the authority to wage war on Iraq Congress gave the president in 2002. Call it Operation Do Over -- perfect for politicians looking to rewrite the past. "The American public and our troops in the field are entitled to a new debate about this war," said Clinton and Byrd in a letter to Democratic senators.

Actually, they aren't entitled to "a new debate" -- they're entitled to a new policy. The American people have had plenty of debate on the issue, and they have chosen sides. They want us out of Iraq.

Barack Obama will offer an amendment geared to improving mental health services for soldiers returning from the war. This is clearly a worthy goal, but he should first -- or, at least, at the same time -- concentrate on getting those soldiers home. **

Another measure gaining traction is a bipartisan bill proposed by Ken Salazar and Lamar Alexander that would make the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group the official policy of the government. But since it only puts forth a "goal" of withdrawing troops by the end of March 2008 without setting an actual deadline, the measure is less of a plan than a political fig leaf. "The political power of Salazar's amendment is its ambiguity," said John Hamre president of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "It's a way to give political cover." Ambiguity and political cover are the last things Congressional Democrats should be embracing -- unless they are hoping to see their approval ratings fall even lower.

Are the Republicans who are turning away from the president serious about ending the war? We won't find out unless Democrats are willing to step up to the plate and swing for the fences.

Ending the war in Iraq is not going to be easy. But it will be impossible unless Democrats provide some real leadership.

** Update: According to Ben LaBolt, Obama's press secretary, Obama plans to sign on to an amendment offered by Carl Levin and Jack Reed calling for troop redeployment to begin within 120 days of passage, with all troops to be out of Iraq by April 1, 2008 -- except for the forces needed for specified, limited missions such as border protection and counterterrorism.

I hope the democratic leadership keeps moving closer and closer to an immediate end to this war. It's murderous, unconstitutional, immoral - and has been since the day it started.

The time to end this war is now. Not next year and not next fall. Not when the republicans tell us it's over either.

Today, not tomorrow....now.

Only We the People can stop the war

I recently read that while 65-70% of the population are ready to at least start bringing the troops home, that in the last five years no more than 2% of the people had taken any public action, however small, in opposition to the regime's war policy. Every petition signer, every bumper sticker on a car, every letter to an editor or call to a Congressman, every weekly vigiler or marcher in the big demonstrations, are all drawn from that same pool of only 2% of the public. Outside of that 2% not a single American has done a single thing to try to pressure the government to end the war. That's simply not gong to change the gridlock in Congress. The only time 2% of the public can get Congress to act is when it's the 2% of richest and most powerful Americans demanding another tax cut. Other than that, 2%? Fuggedaboudit.

The American people need to come off of the sidelines. Even at the height of the war's popularity, polls showed 30% still opposed it. Why hasn't the peace movement been able to get more than one out of fifteen people who have ALWAYS opposed the war to take even the smallest action? Citizens need to take Howard Zinn's advice to heart, that we are citizens, we ahve a role to play in the system that is different from that of politicians, but just as real, just as important, even moreso when the system and the politicians fail to act.

Here's on idea for how average citizens can get involved and make their voices heard: September 21 is Iraq Moratorium Day. Everyone that opposes the war should do something on September 21. Imagine millions of people wearing black ribbons everywhere you go, rallies in every city and town, millions of calls and faxes to Congress on a single day. Let's make our voices heard, because only We, the People can stop the war!

Close scrutiny

If Bush remains true to his track record then close scrutiny and oversight will be needed to ensure that contractors and other war profiteers, unleashed by Bush to plunder our tax dollars, will not receive one red cent more than they are due.

As the 50-year commitment bandied about by Bush and his yes-general Patraeus will not come to pass, contractors will try to demonstrate that payment schedules should be stepped up on contracts, which will never be completed.

Over half the Americans in Iraq are contractors, paid considerably more than the patriotic Americans who enlisted in the military. The Bush administration has crippled the ability of the military to self-service some of its most important functions, such as feeding itself and providing medical attention. To add insult to injury, this has been done at incredible expense to the American taxpayer.

Resisting the Drums of War

The Bush administration promoted the misguided and destructive war in Iraq by targeting five core concerns that often govern our lives--concerns about vulnerability, injustice, distrust, superiority, and helplessness. Looking ahead, the continued occupation of Iraq--or an attack on Iran--will likely be sold to us in much the same way. I examine these warmongering appeals--and how to counter them--in an online video entitled “Resisting the Drums of War” available for viewing HERE.

"Saddam Hussein is a threat and needs to be removed"---Bill Clinton in speeches in 1998 and 1999

"I vote for this war with conviction"---Hillary Clinton on the floor of the senate just before the invasion (because of what she knew from Bill's administration)

"Saddam Hussein has used WMD's numerous times, and will use them again."----Madeline Albright, Clinton Secty. of State

"A regime change in Iraq is needed".----John Kerry

Remember, President Bush never said 9-11 had any connection with Saddam Hussein. But he did say in a post 9-11 world, a despot like Saddam that has used WMD's, and would use them again, needs to be dealt with.

Now that things have been tough in Iraq these seem Democrats want to surrender. They want to cut and run from those that have beeen trying to take advantage of the situation. For al-Qeada itself has said that Iraq is the central front in their battle against the United States, and the western world. Pulling out before the job of securing the area would be at our peril.

I'm not sure what dream world the Democratic base is living in, but Bush isn't budging until the Iraqis turn over the oil to our oil companies. When the Oil Bill is agreed on and signed, and the oil and dollars are flowing to Exxon etc, then we'll pull back the troops, and our bureaucrats will live happily ever after in the Green Zone. What did people think Bush meant when he said that the war would pay for itself?? Iraqi infrastructure is getting demolished in this war, so our companies will be there to rebuild at top dollar. This war isn't about anything other than greed and oil. Unless the Iraqis join together and throw us out completely, we're there until hell freezes over.

If you think your Godless, infidel country, run by gays and old women can stand up to the warriors of Alla, then you are sadly mistaken. Osama Bin Laden has 124 children(below average for a handsome muslem man) while you brainwash your young women into killing their offspring. Do the math on your way to your gay parades. You could not fight the warriors of Alla for five minutes before your wives command you to put down your weapons and flea home like a nasty rat. So stay home and notice that your muslem neighbors go to the clinic to bear children rather than kill them. Stay home and enjoy your sick idea of freedom while it lasts. Then you will be judged by Islam and cured of the sickness you are trying to spread to Islam. Resistance is futile! Enjoy your future.

More lies and Bushit. Funny how he "yearns for peace" at the end of a rifle. A war necessary to secure peace. (What in the hell does that mean?) Democracy is taking hold in Iraq-which is why the Taliban is expanding there. Geez this man is in a constant state of delusion, along with my next door neighbors who still ride around with a "Bush/Cheney" bumper sticker on their car. When will this nightmare end? Where is Lee Harvey Oswald when you need him?

Democrats Can't Wait Around for GOP Defectors to End the War

Were the Democrats able to end the Iraq War or cease combat operations through a Dem only strategy, this headline would never have appeared.

The anti-war movement lacks the institutional strength to change policy alone.

Without the shift of a sizeable number of GOP legislators away from the Administration position, there will be no change in policy.

Referring to GOP legislators willing to break ranks with their President and leadership defectors makes them sound disloyal and dishonorable.

Republicans who are willing to act to change the futile and cruel policies implemented by the Administration in Iraq deserve far better.

It is time to develop a bipartisan withdrawal strategy that recognizes the risks of continuing the war in Iraq outweigh the risks of withdrawal and fashion the legislation to implement a phased withdrawal.

"I vote for this war with conviction"---Hillary Clinton on the floor of the senate just before the invasion (because of what she knew from Bill's administration)

An interesting quote from another earlier post.

Interesting because the vote in October 02 was to authorize the President to use force if and only if diplomatic means of assuring inspections failed.

I have not yet checked the transcript of Senator Clinton's speech on that vote, but I will entirely surprised to find the quotation attributed to her in it.

As the author of the comment went to make a disparaging comment about the Dems, it is entirely safe to assume the quote is bogus and merely part of the usual bag of GOP disinformation and partisan mud slinging used in their discussion of national security matters.

The real issue is no agreement about the old question: Why are we in Iraq? Most Dems unfortunately agree with Bush that although mistakes have been made, the US still has "serious interests" there. They list (1) fighting terrorism, (2) avoiding civil war and (3) protecting the Kurds. Both sides are careful to avoid any mention of the far more significant interest of maintaining permanent bases in Iraq.

Those "interests" are nothing more than substitutes to replace the original claim that we invaded Iraq to eliminate the threat of its "WMD". They are just today's choice of window dressing to mask the actual purpose of the invasion and occupation. Not even the opponents of the war dare to challenge our building of billion dollar bases and the world's biggest Embassy-- all intended to assure a compliant "government" that endorses US control of Iraq's oil. The White House and Pentagon now call that goal the "Korea model." The reluctance of the mediaof to call that a permanent occupation is consistent with its failure to properly inform its readers more than four years ago.

Until we have a President who uneqivocally rejects the purpose of those permanent bases, or a Congress that refuses to pay for them, we will be staying in Iraq and people will continue to be perplexed about the reasons why.

Hey, I'll go Arianna one better. Why have the Democrats signed off all these years on gargantuan Defense budgets that are such exercises in overkill that they qualify as ludicrous and obscene? In fiscal '05, for instance, the US outspent, by $29 billion, the collective defense expenditures of the remainder of the planet. Just who the hell are we so afraid of--the Klingons? Our current Hateful Enemy's sneaky weapon of choice, so we've been told, is the dirty bomb in the innocuous suitcase.

Yes, Bush is to blame for Iraq, but before Bush there was the Military Industrial Complex. It began the policy of Military Imperialism, which Bush and the neo-cons have embraced as their raison d'etre, and it is eating the country alive from within. But no politician ever mentions it, because there's a little piece of the DOD pie for everybody. Except, of course, the people who depended on social programs that have been de-funded to buy more WMD. The rest of the developed world gets such things as health care and college tuition for their taxes. We get more nuclear submarines. Hurray for the USA!

Remember always that the Iraq War was based on Dick Cheney's lies, and all the talk about whether we should be there, or how to get out -- should always be prefaced by that premise: we were lied into this war.

Some, like Bush and John McCain are still calling for "victory", and chastising any who want to leave. They are wrong. Any enterprise begun with such a mendacious intent could never have a satisfactory conclusion. The results so far are proof enough.

We gave the wrong man the power to wage war, and he gave it to an even worse man, DicK Cheney. It is time for congress to retrieve its power.

Fellow progressive brothers, I encourage all who are fed up with the LIAR Bush administration and all of his lies which are puting us in danger. On August 15, 2007 please join our Peace Rally in the great city of Baghdad. As we all know, the word "terrorist" is just a buzz word invented by Bush to scare the American people. So on August 15, we will gather in Baghdad for the first ever American Peace rally to show the world what a LIAR, fear monger Bush is.
At 6 a.m. (Emediatley following the 5a.m. call to prayer), we will start with an exhibition by the Oakland Gay Tamberre. They will dance, and with interpretor, explain exactly what it means to be gay and proud.
At 7a.m. Members of Planned Paenthood will perform an actual partial birth abortion so as to relieve any pre-consieved ancieties they may have about this very humane procedure.
The afternoon festivities will be free food (please do not bring any pork items.) for the Iraqi insurgents and Beer and wine. ( there will be a small charge for the alcohol beverages).
Lastly, there will a freedom of expression march which will begin just outside of the Green-zone where all are invited to express themselves in any way they want, and free issues of Hustler Magazine will be passed out to the crowd as well as condoms and coupons for a free visit to planned parenthood.
Security will be top notch, provided by the Lesbian Movement Foundation.
Don't delay! Buy your airline ticket as soon as you can. Lets prove to the world what a LIAR Bush is by embracing our Iraqi brothers and Sisters Now! There were a few minor incidents where some Sunni drilled into the brains of some Shiite with an electric drill, but that's because BUSH LIED! Hurry and buy your ticket as we are expecting a large turn out.
Announcement: Military Personel are NOT WELCOME!!, but you are welcome to view the festivities from the Green-Zone.
