Choosing Hillary Clinton's Theme Song

By Will Durst, AlterNet. Posted May 28, 2007.

Hillary Clinton just offered up the choice of her official presidential campaign song into the hands of the people. Here are a few ideas.

We members of the CCJU; the Comics, Clowns & Jesters Union, can currently be found moping around, wearing an excess of black, plunged into a state of funk that can only be called "pre- mourning" as we anticipate the end of what will surely be known as the Golden Era of political humor. The reign of George W. Bush is nearing an end. Destined to go down in history as the worst President EVER, and that includes William Henry Harrison, the guy who gave a three hour Inaugural Speech in the rain, caught pneumonia and served 30 days supine in a sick bed until becoming the first president to die in office.

The Bush administration would give its eyeteeth to be looked upon as possessing that kind of successful legacy. He was, is and shall be for 20 more months, the Full Employment Act for Political Comedy. Like if Reagan and Quayle had a kid. He's Quagan, and sharing the first four letters with quagmire only adds to the fun.

So the end is near and woe is we, and in three or four years our careers will mostly consist of inquiring, "You want lids on these?" But wait. There's a glimmer of hope flashing on the hill. And yes, I am talking about THE hill: Hillary Rodham Clinton. Who just offered up the choice of her official presidential campaign song into the hands of we, the great unwashed. And if you don't think that's the comedic equivalent of a batting practice fastball lobbed right into our wheelhouse, you wouldn't know a comedy premise from roasted sesame paste.

Of course, the Hillster has attempted to limit our selections to certain pre screened songs. "Beautiful Day" by U2. "Get Ready" by the Temptations. "I'll Take You There" by Staple Singers. Smash Mouth's remake of "I'm a Believer." Five others. Bunch of typical lame ass options if you ask me. Little creativity and not much of a window for laughs. But that's why we get paid the big bucks. To open that window wide enough for all of our fat lazy humor butts to squeeze through. Brace yourself. Open wide. Here goes.

A few optional tunes that might goose the Junior Senator of New York's campaign not to mention help with the whole perception that she has a rod up her butt the size of the John Hancock Building.

ALTERNATIVE OFFICIAL HILLARY CLINTON PRESIDENTIAL CAMPAIGN SONGS: Why does Justin Timberlake have to be the only who's bringing "Sexy Back?" Hunh? Go for it Hill. Or how bout "Yout Can't Always Get What You Want" by the Stones? Let your contributors down gently. Want to rekindle the past while still grasping for the future? Alter Bill's old song into "Don't Stop Thinking About Yesterday." Need an anthem? What better anthem is there than Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive?" For some comic relief: "I Got Friends in Low Places," or "It's Too Late Baby." But no, better save that last one in case Al Gore decides to jump in. I got it: "Theme From Shaft." Maybe too candid, as might be Elton John's "The Bitch Is Back."

But if Senator Clinton wants a little payback with her pomp and circumstance, imagine the look on Bill's face every time he's stuck on stage while the orchestra introduces she, the candidate, by kicking out Mitch Ryder's "Devil With a Blue Dress." Heh heh heh. Thanks Hillary. This looks to be the start of a beautiful relationship.

Digg!

Funny article about another grotesque deformity on the present political stage, although she's by no means alone (McCain, Giuliani, Romney - all chameleons, too).

So Hillary calls herself Democrat, and I'm I'm supposed to feel an affinity to her? Clearly, those words - Democrat and Republican - mean nothing. For example, most people reading these words - liberals - would prefer Ron Paul, a Republican, to Hillary, a Democrat, for president anyway.

And why would anybody care what song Hillary picks? Or which marionette is "elected".

If I could turn back time by Cher.

If Hillary were at all hip, she'd choose "One Week" by the Barenaked Ladies, breaking all the PC political rules, perfect theme song because it's a long strange apology (which would fit in with how she should apologize for her war vote) and it's also a description in 1st person of an eccentric personality, which she probably really is in private. Plus it's a lot of fun, dancable and funny-- everything she wants to pretend to be but not ever be because too unsafe, too unconsultant approved and choreographed.

She could also pick "All By Myself", the oldie by Eric Carmen, because it's sacharine melancholy loneliness might describe where she'll end up when she explains her new "2nd term only" health care proposal to primary voters. When they examine it, she'll be humming that to herself in the cornfields of Iowa.

The best song for Hillary would be "If I Could Turn Back Time" by Cher. It's perfect-- Hillary said she'd like to wipe away the Bush years and start over as if it were back to Bill Clinton's presidency, as if she could turn back time and take us all to the past and pretend the last 6 years never happened. And it covers her unspoken, unwilling need to apologize for that stinking war vote. And it's a hackneyed hit by a still sexy, vibrant singer whose better tunes are long gone, lamenting the things she did wrong in a relationship wishing she could turn back time to make it right. Just like Hillary's campaign might end up.

By the way, Hillary is really embarassing herself with this video asking for a song, if you've seen it, it is a huge turn off. America is burning down to the ground and she's acting like a cute little song's going to cheer us all up. Fooey.

Considering her support for the war, I'm tempted to pick "Angel of Death" by Slayer. But since it's a holiday, and I have no other ideas, I'll pick "Killer Queen". It has lots of ambiguous, nonsensical references to politics, and supports the gay lifestyle without coming out and saying it.

As for the article, I'm trying to understand how dying of pnemonia makes you a bad president.

Dylan's IDIOT WIND:

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth,

Blowing down the backroads headin' south.

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,

You're an idiot, babe.

It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind

Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull,

From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol.

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,

You're an idiot, babe.

It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

What song she picks. She dances whatever way the special interests sing. She has been a mouthpiece too many times for me to trust her. I am putting a slendar thread of hope in Obama and voting for him in the primaries. I as sooooo disappointed in Hilary, I don't even know if I could bring myself to vote for her in the general election. Her healthcare plan stinks and is full of stereotypes. She definitely threw in concessions to BigPharma.

Via preIraq war, pre2004, NYT, no one hated her more than viciously pro-war, pro Judge Roy Miller, pro Dobson; McCain and Zell Miller and Ed Koch enabled Bush II, Koch calling Clinton the "true democrat." Now, aside from Wall Street numbers, which Reich labeled desperately misleading, with Americans recognizing a housing market disaster - For Sale, For Sale, For Sale by Owner on high-priced homes - anguish, and succinct illustration, threads throughout this, and other fora, anguish for cause. Bush II served oil-for-profit; unlike Bush II, will she consider American citizenry? Why does Scaife, who demonized the Clintons, hate them so much? It is said neither Gore, nor Kerry, would have acted unilaterally, as Bush II. Which means American citizens are two elections into disaster!

"head like a hole.

head like a hole.
black as your soul.
i'd rather die than give you control.

bow down before the one you serve.
you're going to get what you deserve.
bow down before the one you serve.

and

"god money i'll do anything for you.
god money just tell me what you want me to.
god money nail me up against the wall.
god money don't want everything he wants it all."

I think that pretty much sums up the 2008 elections

How about some Rage Against the Machine?

The world is my expense
The cost of my desire
Jesus blessed me with its future
And I protect it with fire
So raise your fists
And march around
Don't dare take what you need
I'll jail and bury those committed
And smother the rest in greed
Crawl with me into tomorrow
Or I'll drag you to your grave
I'm deep inside your children
They'll betray you in my name

Sleep now in the fire

The lie is my expense
The scope of my desire
The Party blessed me with its future
And I protect it with fire
I am the Nina The Pinta The Santa Maria
The noose and the rapist
And the fields overseer
The agents of orange
The priests of Hiroshima
The cost of my desire

Sleep now in the fire

For it's the end of history
It's caged and frozen still
There is no other pill to take
So swallow the one
That made you ill
The Nina The Pinta The Santa Maria
The noose and the rapist
The fields overseer
The agents of orange
The priests of Hiroshima
The cost of my desire

Sleep now in the fire

The FIRST song that jumped into my mind was Brick House by the Commodores.

She's mighty mighty, letting it all hang out! So funkayy.

Of course, the thought of Hillary Clinton winning anyone over with feminine charm is about as appealing as the thought of Mark Foley with one of his pages.

But seriously...
I want a girl with a mind like a diamond
I want a girl who knows what's best
I want a girl with shoes that cut
And eyes that burn like cigarettes

I want a girl with the right allocations
Who's fast and thorough
And sharp as a tack
She is playing with her jewelry
She is putting up her hair
She is touring the facility
And picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnng jacket......

I want a girl who gets up early
I want a girl who stays up late
I want a girl with uninterrupted prosperity
Who uses a machete to cut through red tape
With fingernails that shine like justice
And a voice that is dark like tinted glass

She is fast, thorough
And sharp as a tack
She is touring the facility
And picking up slack

I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnnng.... lonnng jacket

I want a girl with a smooth liquidation
I want a girl with good dividends
At Citibank we will meet accidentally
We'll start to talk when she borrows my pen

She wants a car with a cup-holder arm rest
She wants a car that will get her there
She's changing her name from Kitty to Karen
She's trading her MG for a white Chrysler Le Barron

I want a girl with a short skirt and a lonnnnggggggggg jacket

Everybody knows that the dice are loaded
Everybody rolls with their fingers crossed
Everybody knows that the war is over
Everybody knows the good guys lost
Everybody knows the fight was fixed
The poor stay poor, the rich get rich
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that the boat is leaking
Everybody knows that the captain lied
Everybody got this broken feeling
Like their father or their dog just died

Everybody talking to their pockets
Everybody wants a box of chocolates
And a long stem rose
Everybody knows

Everybody knows that you love me baby
Everybody knows that you really do
Everybody knows that youve been faithful
Ah give or take a night or two
Everybody knows youve been discreet
But there were so many people you just had to meet
Without your clothes
And everybody knows

Everybody knows, everybody knows
Thats how it goes
Everybody knows

...

And everybody knows that the plague is coming
Everybody knows that its moving fast
Everybody knows that the naked man and woman
Are just a shining artifact of the past
Everybody knows the scene is dead
But theres gonna be a meter on your bed
That will disclose
What everybody knows

And everybody knows that youre in trouble
Everybody knows what youve been through
From the bloody cross on top of calvary
To the beach of malibu
Everybody knows its coming apart
Take one last look at this sacred heart
Before it blows
And everybody knows

OK, here's my choices:

Alice Cooper - Elected
Beatles - Carry that weight
Beatles - I'm a loser
Beatles - Can't buy me love
Beatles - Act naturally
Beatles - Think for yourself
Ben Folds Five - Your redneck past
Big Star - You get what you deserve
Boston - A man I'll never be
Cars - Got a lot on my head
Crowded House - Don't dream it's over
The Cure - Jumping someone else's train
Deep Purple - You fool no one
Deep Purple - Strange kind of woman
English Beat - All out to get you

OK, I think that's enough, unless Fountains of Wayne suddenly release a song called "Chelsea's Mom".

I immediately thought of Pink Floyd's "Mother" from The Wall but after long reflection I thought of Edie Brickell and The New Bohemians' "What I Am". It's the one with the chorus, "Shove me into shallow water before I get too deep."

There is a great political theme song waiting for the right politician (and Hillary's not it) to find and use. Its by Australian pop singer John Farham and its called "You're The Voice." You'll find the definitive version on his "Whispering Jack" CD. Its a toe-tapper and a soul-stirrer, especially when the bagpipes kick in. (Yes, bagpipes... in a rock song!)

Check it out if you can.

Here's the chorus:
You're the voice, try and understand it
Make a noise and make it clear.
No-o-o-o-o-o
We're not going to live in silence,
we're not going to live in fear.
No-o-o-o-o

Of course, whether Farnham would allow Hillary (or Obama) to use it is another matter.
