Benchmarks: Yet Another Bush Mirage Shimmering in the Iraqi Desert?

By Arianna Huffington, Huffington Post. Posted May 3, 2007.

The hottest term in post-veto Washington is suddenly "benchmarks." But there has been little clarity on whether they represent an acceptable compromise or another Bush mirage.

The hottest term in post-veto Washington is suddenly "benchmarks." If you had a dollar for every time it's been bandied about his week, you could outbid Rupert Murdoch for the Journal -- or, at least, pay for all the Valium being downed by Deborah Jean Palfrey's clients.

But amidst all the benchmark babble, there has been precious little clarity on whether they represent an acceptable compromise position -- or are just another Bush mirage shimmering in the Iraqi desert.

Thank goodness for Michael Ware, CNN's Baghdad-based war correspondent. Amid the hot air, his reporting is like a bracing splash of ice cold water to the face. A jolt of from-the-belly-of-the-beast reality. A wake-up call delivered via jackhammer. With an Australian accent.

I caught him the other night on Anderson Cooper 360°, discussing the latest from Iraq with Cooper and David Gergen. Now I love David Gergen as a person, but the contrast between his safely-ensconced-in-the-Beltway take on benchmarks and Ware's boots-on-the-ground no-bullshit approach couldn't have been starker.

Here was Ware:

COOPER: Well, Michael Ware, let's talk about those benchmarks ... The benchmarks, I guess, are to pressure Maliki. Has pressure worked on him in the past?

WARE: No, never. This is such an old scenario, Anderson. I mean, this word benchmark has been used over and over and over. And no matter what conditions have been set for Maliki to meet, he's never once lived up to them. So, now Washington is trying to up the ante, increase the pressure upon him in what most likely will be the vain hope that he will deliver.

Woosh, sting (that's the sound of ice-water truth hitting face).

He later added this, the verbal equivalent of taking a pair of White House-designed rose-colored glasses and grinding them into the sidewalk with your heel:

COOPER: Is this notion of a unified democracy of Sunni and Shia, is there any real support for it within the Iraqi government?

WARE: No, no, none that I have seen, Anderson. And I have dealt a lot with all of the important factions within the Iraqi government. It's simply in no one's interest whatsoever to pursue a true reconciliation.

Then there was Gergen, and this gem of mealy-mouthed waffling:

GERGEN: While the benchmarks may seem like sort of a Washington game, in some ways, they're a very important prelude to the United States beginning to look for a way to disengage.

A prelude to beginning to look for a way to disengage?

In other words, let's wait until September to see how things are going, then, if this latest in a long line of unmet benchmarks also goes unmet, we can begin to commence to initiate the starting of thinking about the mulling over of the consideration of a possible path that could, in time, lead us to begin to commence to start looking for a means that could, with any luck, result in America beginning to commence to start withdrawing from Iraq. Eventually.

The truth is, we keep putting forth key benchmarks for the Iraqis -- on Iraqi troops, on oil revenue sharing, on reversing De-Baathification, on amending Iraq's new constitution -- and they keep failing to meet them. Time after time after time.

Democrats mustn't fall prey to the benchmark mirage. They need to stay strong and keep the heat on Bush. Perhaps they can put Michael Ware's reports on tape and have them piped into their Congressional offices.

Digg!

but it's due to the resistance of the war lovers in Congress (and of course, the administration) that has so far been preventing this from happening.

One attempt and subsequent failure to put through a timeline for withdrawal is not enough effort, in my opinion.

Huge tasks take huge efforts, and doing the right thing often seems quite insurmountable.

We need a new direction in this country - one where we no longer spend billions to prop up evil dictators, base our military in 120+ nations, wage aggressive wars, kill millions, overthrow governments and on and on and on.

The first step is to end this war, now. I hope that there will be more effort to do so before moving on to "compromise" - which should only be at the very last resort.

This war CAN be ended promptly. To see how, read this essay:

It's nice to know that Rep Ron Paul (R-TX) shares my view. Been saying it all along...simple exercise.....\\"(JUST LEAVE)"////...Iraq will let you.... and breath a collective sigh of relief at the same time. Talk about this, talk and about that, it is only talk. One thing is known and that is when the USofA comes to town you are going to know absolute grief....they are there in numbers and that means they have brought their guns....and we all know how good they are with those....catastrophically clumsy and you get it served up with lashings of understanding...my god these towel heads don't even have a burger king...kinda like...
So we watch and we wonder and we wait for the...here's another word for the alternet guys....\"( INEVITABLE )"//.... complete failure...of this fools errand in Iraq..nothing short of an international investigation must be undertaken to peel back the multiple layers of corruption within the US government and we must point the finger at those who have usurped the good intentions of the good people of the USA and make the UN more empowered to lay charges (Colin Powell) reprehensible, Bush endorsed LIE......forget about the American people they cannot do it by themselves....I thought they could, but now I know that they can't. They need our help and we must find a way or this kind of travesty will only occur again.

Once Again.....JUST LEAVE
Captain OUT

P.S. Just like all other coalition of the lemmings partners we are also voting out ours...and good riddance to the butchery. FOR WHO FOR WHAT

I like that run-on paragraph towards the end.

It's a neat trick: keep setting up hoops quicker than the Iraqis can jump through them...Or set them so high that they can never jump through them...Patriotic Americans won't even notice. They're too busy worrying about being called chicken for "cutting and running", or not "finishing the job".

Letter to the editor
Peter Macdonald 465 Packersfalls rd Lee NH03824 603-659-6217
Letter to the Editor are a great way for people to learn about problems in our government. What do you do if newspapers censor your letters. In today’s letters I read how people are harmed by the Veterans administration. I have a copy of the paper work to show that the VA has used my service connected disabilities as a tool to stop me. NH Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter had Dr. Biswas of the Manchester VA Hospital attempt to commit me for her self gain. The Director of the NH VA has stopped my medical care. I went to the Portsmouth VA clinic on May 13, 07 at 2:30 and was informed by two nurses to leave and not come back. I was there for severe head pain and numbness and drooping of the left side of my face. I left now the VA administration in Manchester refuse to talk with me. My messages go unanswered. NH judges and government officials are violating the Constitution for self pleasure. The newspapers refuse to print the people opinion. Did Cpl McKay miss use police power to inflict harm on someone that he did not like? Was Carle Drega harmed by town officials, the judge and NH state police in Colebrook NH? Maybe we the citizens just get fed up. I volunteer to help a Madbury NH family so desperate they called me because of my letters in the paper. I had never met this family before. The Madbury NH selectmen use government powers to harm residents the selectmen do not like. Judge Peter Fauver violated the Constitution 29 or more times to protect these selectmen. Judge James O’Neill acknowledged these crimes in open court and then ruled them constitutional to protect a brother judge. The NH supreme court refuse to hear the case to protect the legal empire. The Federal courts ruled that judges have immunity to protect the monopoly on power. I am a 100% disabled United States Marine. I have a head injury which left me with no memory of life prior to my seventeenth birthday. I broke my back while performing my duty in a combat support mission. I lost my hearing on another combat support mission. NH has taken my freedom, money, wife and much more. Now NH has taken my medical. To strip a disabled veteran of medical services for service connected injuries is a crime. Federal officials, judges and NH government officials are dominating we the people. The newspapers are fueling these crimes by censoring the truth. I have violated no laws or threatened anyone. I volunteer over 1000hr/yr helping any one that needs help. I am fed up. Should I do what our Constitution obliges us to do when all means of redress fails. There must be a peace full solution. Congresswoman Shea-porter lied on a police report and the Dover and Lee NH police refuse to allow me to file a complaint. Check Dover police file 7002-942 before it disappears. Letters to the editor that are censored are destructive to a free society. Death, Destruction and turmoil will eventually rule. Peter Macdonald Sgt USMC Semper Fi.
