The Curious Case of the Amnesiac Attorney General

By Will Durst, AlterNet. Posted April 25, 2007.

Gonzales is apparently suffering from situational amnesia. In his recent appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, he was unable to recall anything ... 45 times.

I'm afraid it is my duty to impart some bad news people, and I advise you all to sit down before you fall down. The Attorney General of the United States apparently is suffering from a horrible disease. Best case scenario is we're talking a tertiary case of situational amnesia here. And for a lawyer, that can't be good.

In his recent appearance before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Alberto Gonzales was unable to recall anything ... 45 times. And that was before lunch. Maybe it's simply a case of hypoglycemia, since after lunch, he only couldn't recollect 29 times. I don't mean to minimize the critical nature of this crisis but the solution seems obvious to me: between meal snacks.

The scary part is, as head of the Justice Department, Gonzales is ostensibly the country's top lawyer, although after this performance, I doubt if he's destined to be the top lawyer on the Greyhound he'll soon be riding back to Texas. Hey, he's the guy who said "the moment I believe I can no longer be effective, I will resign as Attorney General," and right about now even his staunchest supporters have to be ordering mylar balloons delivered to the D of J with "don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out" stenciled on them.

When asked about the decision to fire eight federal prosecutors, Gonzales insisted he wasn't involved, then after e-mails about meetings he attended were released, okay, maybe he was involved. But just a little. Microscopically. An eensy teensy teeny wee bit of a tad. He did admit to making the decision to fire the US Attorneys but couldn't remember when he made the decision. Seems to be a perennial theme with this administration. "Had absolutely nothing to do with it. Oh, you have evidence? Nope. Sorry. Can't remember. Its all a blur."

At the hearing, Senators accused Bush's torture champion of being dishonest, deceitful, incompetent, evasive, inept, underhanded, misleading, smelling like rancid olive loaf and looking like he's wearing his father's burial suit. Not to mention scaring small children with a high squeaky voice that over broadcast airwaves has been known to activate smoke alarms, lawn sprinklers and TIVO recordings of Gladiator movies. And those were the Republicans. With friends like these, who needs Democrats?

In a show of solidarity the President assured the country that the Attorney General had his full confidence. "Doing a heckuva job, Alberto." Actually talked about how pleased he was with Gonzales's performance even though a staffer conceded he had not seen any of the testimony. I'm thinking the main reason he's supporting him is because "Attorney General" and "Alberto Gonzales" have the same initials and its the only way he can remember who's filling the position.

The low point may have been when Gonzales attempted to explain away the personnel changes as sometimes coming down to just not the right people at the right time, and South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham asked "If I applied that standard to you, what would you say?" And the entire room erupted into laughter. And you know what, that can't be good either. For him or for us.

Why the hostility? Along with all the memory lapses, the AG also took "responsibility" almost as often. Shouldn't we cut him some slack as a result?

Bush is so pleased that Gonzales didn't directly incriminate him and would lose his torture enabler if Gonzales gets canned.
Keep up the good work Alternet!

Alert the CDC for Impending Epidemic of SA

Now Will ,this is not an unusual condition. Situational amnesia. Over the years a few of my ex- boyfriends suffered from this disease, as well as many members of the Reagan administration. Didn't George Bush the elder have memory lapses too, concerning the Iran debacle. Now this condition also occurs frequently in soap opera land too. We need some funding for this deplorable condition that seems to strike politicians often .Do you think maybe it is caused by the safe levels of mercury in the water. As Congress continues to investigate the Bush administration I look for an epidemic of SA.

This twit who has made legal contortions that make Cirque de Soleil look arthritic (torture's not illegal if you really, really want to....) had WEEKS to prepare for his testimony. Most of us (well, those intersted in the truth) would have spent that time reviewing meeting minutes, re-reading documention, recalling conversations, REFRESHING our memories. Gonzo apparently spent the time practicing in the mirror, saying, "I don't recall," until he stopped uncontrollably guffawing and snorting milk out his nose.

All that time to get ready and he just "doesn't recall?" How the hell did this man pass the bar?
And this was our best choice for Attorney General, leader of our "Department of Justice?" Scary....

James

It is painfully obvious that King George has a serious inferiority complex and had to surround himself with mental midgets and psychopaths to feel superior in his own small mind. Alberto G is only the latest in a long line of White House fools. We all need to remember this REPUBLICAN CREW when it comes time to vote in November 2008 and do the right thing by replacing all their incumbent senators, congressmen, and returning to sanity, honor, and integrity in a Democratic White House. Don't get mad, get even in the voting booth.

might wind up getting him indicted. There is a lot more crap underneath this. When it's better to "testify" and show the country you are an incompetent, unqualified idiot, than to testify with the truth, you know there is a bomb. Tick, tick, tick.

Gonzales's form of amnesia is yet another from of neocon lieing and nothing more or nothing less. He should immediately be fired or step down from the position of Attorney General and the head of the Justice Dept as he act simply as the figure-head for "King George"

Total Recall

Someone needed to ask AG, who can do all the recalling in his office? If he isn't the one then he needs to resign. If someone higher than him is calling the shots then that person needs to be before congress. If it is someone lower then I am sure they would get the ax and we wouldn't know who did the firing.

This is typical with any administration. Ask them a simple question and they don't want to answer. Remember NAFTA? Not one person in Congress wanted to answer any questions about it yet it was passed like shit hitting the fan.

Bootlicking son of a bitch. Since Ronnie Raygun invoked the Duh I can't remember, my brain is jelly, this seems to be the pat answer for Republican pond scum to avoid incriminating themselves or to own up to anything. Maybe if Jesus's torture boy was rendered to a black site prison and given the enemy combatant treatment, his memory would improve exponentially. What a fucking absolute loser this prick is.
