Not surprisingly, the Bush administration is already backing away from most of the proposals put forth by the Iraq Study Group. The New York Times, with unintended comic irony, noted it this way: "Administration officials say their preliminary review of the bipartisan Iraq Study Group's recommendations has concluded that many of its key proposals are impractical or unrealistic." Thank God we have George Bush to protect us from doing anything impractical or unrealistic in the Middle East.

But there is one thing in the proposal we can be sure Bush will take from the report -- the slogan. Bush may not be into things like facts, truth, or reality, but he loves a good slogan.

So while Bush may not like any of the Group's 79 proposals (so impractical and unrealistic), he's ready to adopt its slogan, "New Way Forward." Newsweek says that next week "Bush is expected to announce what he calls 'The New Way Forward,' his latest plan to salvage the mission in Iraq."

Of course, that's been the problem during this entire fiasco -- the substitution of rhetoric for policy -- the belief, even at this late date, that reality can be changed simply by changing the language used to describe it. Bush makes a big show of his religious faith, but what's truly impressive is his incredible faith in the power of PR, and, accordingly, his lack of faith in the American people.

Nowhere was this rationale laid out more succinctly than in the internal memo Donald Rumsfeld wrote in his last month in office, which included this slippery strategy: "Announce that whatever new approach the U.S. decides on, the U.S. is doing so on a trial basis. This will give us the ability to readjust and move to another course, if necessary, and therefore not 'lose.'"

It's not about losing and winning, but, rather, about "losing" and "winning," which are very, very different things.

So now we're going from "Stay the Course" to "New Way Forward." Will that change anything? Not likely. But, in Bush's mind, it'll buy him some time, at least until the next slogan.

And what will that be? Following is the HuffPo Iraq War Slogan Timeline -- past, present, and, yes, future:

2001:

GATHERING THREAT

2002:

AXIS OF EVIL

2003:

SLAM DUNK

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

2004:

2006:

How About "Put The Military To Use?"

We have a military that does nothing but train. Make them work for a living and get some real life threatening training.

How come we didn't set up a democracy in Kuwait? I heard that is what we are all about.

... the very reason that Bush is asking everyone under the sun for recomendations on Iraq is because he has yet to find anyone who will simply tell him what he wants to hear. The Iraq Study Group released their report... and it didn't say what he wanted to hear. So now he is looking to everyone else.

Don't worry, though.. I'm sure his New-Model-Rumsfeld yes-man will tell him exactly what he wants to hear. Just like he did in Iran-Contra.

"Still Lying After All These Years"? (With thanks to Mr. Paul Simon). I could probably turn that into a decent filksong...

GB just forgot to mention when he said he was listening to all the panels and experts that he had no intention of actually doing anything other than what he's intended all along: robbing the place blind, and the rest of it can go to Hell in a handcart for all he cares. It's clear that he feels that the more dead trouble-makers there are the better. That apparantly applies to those of our own troops who get wounded and try to get money or medical care for it, and the DU will even take care of all the PTSD diagnoses.

Batting a hundred and forty thousand, George. So far.

Ian

Iraq was governed by brutality before we arrived. It unfortunately is going to be governed by brutality when we leave regardless of timing.
Ten plethora's of semantic universes will not change this sad fact.

Right-Wing Wussies

It never ceases to amaze me that the big, tough right-wing armchair generals (usually chickenhawks who never received one day's worth of hostile fire pay) who are always shouting about how the US can NEVER LOSE and are the biggest, baddest muvver funkers anywhere are ready to concede instant defeat because the evil liberals didn't cheerlead them on.

Ooooh, the war wasn't lost because of the "terrorists", but because the liberals didn't support it. Those liberals must control the pentagon and hold all the reins of power to pose that kind of a threat. Little did we realize that so many gernerals were quiche-eating members of the ACLU all this time.

Another repetition of the good-old German "Stab in the Back" theory of WWI. The really scary part is from the tone of the right-wing blogosphere there are a lot of them who would welcome the same type of anti-Weimarian response that took place in the 30's.

Well, I'd write more, but the quiche is ready. Yum!

BREAKING NEWS: HR Hoofiestock covers Lib War II for CNN...

Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
"Mutterings of a quagmire from his own party today following severe American losses in initial forays with hardened German units have led some to speculate that charges of impeachment may soon be brought against President Roosevelt.

'Hitler did not bomb us, Japan bombed us, so why are we at war with Germany?' shouted Senator Hart Shanks (D, NY). 'Bring the boys home, now!'

Meanwhile, college campuses in the Midwest and feeling their first taste of live radio feeds to both of the left coasts demanded FDR re-instate Marxist social reforms, as the troops slogged through North Africa. 'We are wasting billions on this illegal war, caused by a duped Congress and a 3-term dictator hell bent on getting all social services removed for the sake of world freedom. Ludicrous!' exclaimed Ben DeNova of Students For A Detonated Society.

Congress seemed inclined to fence-sit, awaiting the outcome of the next major battle results before deciding which side to join in this escalating political street fight. 'I'd like to think the President knew what he was getting us into after Pearl, but we've been at war for almost 2 years and we still haven't reached Europe or Japan to any degree. I'm beginning to think Mr. Roosevelt has been mislead by his advisers, or mislead us deliberately, simply to get public minds off his Depression numbers.'

Asked to comment, White House spokeschick Fawn Doo stated that the 'President has heard these same complaints since before the war was initiated by Japan and Germany, never mind Churchill's missed dire warnings from a full decade earlier, and we think that once the Japanese interment camps in California hit full capacity the tide will begin to swing our way, at least in the Congressional districts where our paid voters have been apt to accept anything as a unionized favor in the past. In the mean time he's off to Canada's beautiful Campobello Island once again to do whatever he do do.'

More on this same network, after this word from Tokyo Rose..."
