Indiana: The New Terrorist Target?

By Molly Ivins, AlterNet. Posted August 17, 2006.

The most cunning refinement yet in the administration's plot to scare the liver, lights and onions out of us with Tales of Terror Plots is the Department of Homeland Security's brilliant move to declare Indiana the national center of terrorism, with 8,591 potential targets.

Many citizens have questioned the Indiana move -- some claiming it is a waste of money trying to stop attacks on the Wabash Cannonball. The Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument might merit a little more attention. This is precisely why it is better to have Michael Chertoff and Karl Rove making the Homeland Security decisions, rather than Osama bin Laden.

The defeat of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman in the Democratic primary alerted Veep Dick Cheney to the menace. Ned Lamont, the guy who beat Lieberman, said he was surprised that Cheney claimed his victory would embolden Osama bin, as we call him Texas.

"My God, here we have a terrorist threat against hearth and home, and the very first thing that comes out of their mind is how we can turn this to partisan advantage," complained Lamont. Lieberman warned that Lamont's call for a phased withdrawal of troops from Iraq would be "taken as a tremendous victory" by the terrorists. Cheney said it would encourage "the al-Qaida types" who want to "break the will of the American people in terms of our ability to stay in the fight and complete the task."

Wow. How little we realized the fate of a single senator -- especially such a whiny and sanctimonious one -- meant everything to Osama bin. Must've pulled off his turban and danced around his cave when he got the news. The whole al-Qaida bunch stayed up just to hear the late returns from Darien, Conn.

Give President Bush another five years or so, and he's bound to figure out that Osama bin is not in Iraq -- then we'll be right on his tail. Meanwhile, back in Washington, The Hill newspaper reports that an Enron lobbyist (former aide to Joe Lieberman and money-raiser for him and convicted Republican Connecticut Gov. John Rowland, whom he describes as being "like-minded guys") is demanding that Democratic senators not campaign against Lieberman. When asking other professional influence-peddlers to contribute, he tells them to come back for Lieberman, saying, "Who knows what Lamont would be like?"

For example, Lamont might use his power to make sure the Enron investigation gets serious -- a task Lieberman, ranking Democrat on the Government Affairs Committee, has avoided. No surprise that the lobbyists and insiders want to keep their guy.

In other news, we have the answer to a troubling part of the Middle East jigsaw puzzle: how to rebuild Iraq. We ought to drop Halliburton like a skilletful of rattlesnakes and get Hezbollah on the job. Did you ever see a better rebuilding bunch than this Hezbollah? The shooting hadn't even stopped yet when the "Army of God" was hustling around with plywood and duct tape, putting everything back together. And who do they get to pay for it all, but the Arabs. Now that's what I call rebuilding!

8,591 potential targets in Indiana? At least. If not more.

Ms. Ivins, big daddy Homeland Security knows best. If you were from somewhere other than Texas, you might realize that there is another world out there, after all.

Indiana has only one civilized place in the whole state: the Indiana Dunes. So all 8,591 targets are conveniently located in that one spot. If Indiana knows anything, they know centralization.

True, I read that Lake Michigan is getting a bit gummier than it was when I was a kid basking on the sands of its shoreline. I even hear that the largest collection of fresh water in the world, the Great Lakes, is beginning to succumb to pollution.

So I’m all for protecting the Dunes, especially since all that’s needed are some blankets and towels, sun tan oil, a beach umbrella, maybe an inner tube or two and, if we are really serious, a fishing line. And I can tell from this article, that you are really serious, Ms. Ivins.

But all this time I thought you were an eco-go-getter. Anyone who bad mouths the Dunes deserves to be send to Ohio, where the oil slick on the rivers allows you to BBQ by finding yourself a long stick and just tossing a match in the water. Yes, even a whole hog, apple in its mouth, will float right there without any danger of sinking. But you cannot walk around on the water, as much as it looks like you could.

So go wash your mouth out with water, Ms. Ivins--bottled, of course, since that icky stuff that comes out of our taps has obviously been processed by Osama bin, formerly of the Wild Bunch, now pretending to be your friendly department of water and power. The HS knows whereof it threatens. And check under your bed before you fall asleep.

Focus, Molly, focus. The title is about "targets" in Indiana, which the article spends little than a paragraph on, while dancing around Osama and Lieberman. Stick to one subject at a time, okay?

Oh where O where has Osama bin, O where O where can he be? Up Cheney's sleave must be where he is at, as dirty as it can be. And with Hezbollah/Iran working together, what in the world could Leiberman do about anything?

it's been perfectly obvious from the beginning that the reason we have a "DHS" at all is, 1: defuse blame, (for the actual causes) and, 2: spread the hush-pork... what better way to gain the favor of voters than to give them security-blankets paid for by borrowing our children's wealth? enron was nothing compared to the hijacking of the entire federal government by this group! the only way they are going to let go of this feeding frenzie is plain and simple to catch them red-handed... this makes for an excellent opportunity for all those disenfranchised experts who found themselves on the outs under this destructive regime; connect the dots, the severest threat to American democracy in history is upon us!

My two cents here,

I am a grant writer by trade, and my understanding is that the reasons why Washington D.C. and New York didn't receive the Homeland Security money is because their grant applications weren't up to par, as per say the ones from Indiana.

I understand the reasoning, and do feel that yes the national monuments etc are probably have bigger threats to them than places in Indiana. Yet, they all applied fair and square. I don't know if you have ever written a grant for federal funding, but their standards are high, and they throw out your app first and foremost if you don't have 1/2 inch margins and 12 point Times New Roman or Arial font. AFter having toiled at leas 150 hours on the damn things, you then are judged on writing and whether you meet the criteria, and I swear the effort is harder than any term paper I have ever written.

I digress, suffice to say, giving New York etc preference in a competitve grant process because of where it is is like giving Halliburton no bid contracts, and those processes exist for a reason.
