What Republicans Worry About

By Molly Ivins, AlterNet. Posted June 6, 2006.

Republicans are concerned with gay marriage and the burden of the estate tax on the rich, while the rest of us question war, economy, environment and civilization.

Thank goodness the Republicans are around to tell me what to worry about. The flag-burning crisis -- here in Austin, there's that pall of smoke rising from the West every morning (it's from an area called Tarrytown, where they burn hundreds of flags daily).

You didn't know hundreds of flags were being burned daily? Actually, you can count on your hand the number of incidents reported over the last five years. For instance, there was one flag burned in 2005 by a drunken teenager and one by a protester in California in 2002. This appalling record of ravishment must be stopped. You're clearly not worried about what matters.

Gay marriage, now there's a crisis. Well, OK, so there isn't much gay marriage going on here in Texas. None, in fact. First, we made it illegal. Then, we made it unconstitutional. But President Bush is all concerned about it, so I guess we have to alter the U.S. Constitution. Gus and Captain Call (of "Lonesome Dove" fame) will be an item -- with who knows who waiting in line right after them.

Also of great concern to Republicans is God Almighty, who, rather to my surprise, has been elected chairman of the Texas Republican Party. That's what they announced at the biannual convention in Fort Worth this week: "He is the chairman of the Party." Sheesh, the Democrats couldn't even get Superman.

Also weighing down the nation with a heavy burden is the estate tax, which the Senate will try to repeal this week. The estate tax applies to around 1 percent of Americans, and I have yet to find any record of it costing anyone a family farm or business. It affects only very, very, very rich people, of whom you are probably not one. And they don't, actually, need another tax break.

These are the things we are supposed to be worrying about, and you notice that it frees us of quite a few troubles we might otherwise fret about.

The war in Iraq? No sweat. Impending war with Iran? We're carefree. The economy? Hey, did you see that employment report? Well, ignore it. Budget out of control, shipwreck ahead? Never mind -- Bush doesn't. Worst class divisions since the Gilded Age, rich so much more enormously richer than everybody else, country starting to get creepy? Don't worry, be happy.

Torture, massacre, extraordinary rendition, hidden gulag of prisons in foreign countries, Guantanamo, and massive violations of international law, American law and the Constitution? Well, you can see why gay marriage is a far greater menace.

Wipe out for the environment; hundreds of regulations and laws changed to favor those who exploit and damage natural resources; all so common, no one is keeping track of them all? Let her rip. Global warming? In the first place, it's Al Gore's issue. In the second place, it's a downer. In the third place, who cares if it's too late in a few years?

Homeland security/war on terror? With the highly excellent disposition of anti-terror funds once more judiciously applied by the Department of Homeland Security, we truly have nothing to worry about. We're ready to stop terrorist attacks in Wyoming, and there are no important cultural sites in New York City, so let's rock.

Oil crisis? Ha! What oil crisis? You want a $100 rebate you can then give the oil companies? Hey, we're going to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and that should see us through ... oh, about nine months.

Windfall profits? You think the oil companies are ripping us off for windfall profits? Who? ExxonMobil? Why, they would never!

I believe what we have here is a difference over moral values. The Republicans are worried about the flag, gay marriage and the terrible burden of the estate tax on the rich. The rest of us are obviously unnecessarily worried about war, peace, the economy, the environment and civilization. Another reason to vote Republican -- they have a shorter list.

Recall that when Bush was elected, the challenge was, “Now we shall see whether the GOP knows how to govern, instead of being the complaining minority party.” They don’t know how to govern, because they don’t trust or believe in government.

Another writer on AlterNet today argues that all we have seen in the last six years are excuses for plundering the public coffers, making the rich richer, and sending our youth off to die in a pointless war. We bought the PR slogan of "war on terror" (you cannot war on an emotion) and soaked up the BS like SpongeBob.

Some of us didn’t need the last six years to know this about the GOP. I’m happy to see that it took lying and cheating to steal the election in Ohio. I was beginning to fear that Americans were too stupid to realize that the GOP believes that being rich is all that matters, so steal wherever you can. Unfortunately, the political party that wins gets to set the nation’s agenda. So stealing all you can is how we do business now.

I wish I could believe that the pathetic activities in Congress now were the dying moans of a GOP that can see “the times they are a changing.” But I feel no assurance that an opposition to what has been done will emerge.

Priorities

I was having a discussion with a coworker on Election Day 2004. We were watching the exit polling and they were asking people what was the most important issue. At the top of the list was "values" which is just code for things like gay marriage. My coworker is a staunch Republican who opposes gay marriage. I asked him if he thought gay marriage was more important an issue than Iraq, terrorism, health care, the environment, the budget deficit, the economy and without hesitation he said "yes". I truly didn't know how to respond. It's hard to have a discussion with people who have such misguided priorities. I think that's why Democrats have such a hard time in the heartland. There's this perception among people in this part of the country that Democrats and liberals just don't understand how they think. And after the conversation with my coworker, I think they're right. I don't understand his line of reasoning. Usually if I meet someone who disagrees with me on an issue, I can at least understand why they feel the way they do. But with people like this, I'll never get them. We on the left think issues like gay marriage are minor and certainly not worth deciding elections over. But there are lots of people who really do feel strongly about these cultural issues and until we attempt to understand where they're coming from, we'll never win elections.

Molly, you forgot to mention the Democrats' role in the charade. So eager to maintain the status quo, so frightened by the prospect of conflict, so convinced that roughouse leads to tears.

Of course, now the Republicans are in such deep trouble the Dems can be expected to emerge tentatively from their self-imposed retreat and start flexing their somewhat atrophied ideological muscles.

They might even be emboldened to challenge the Republicans on some meaningful issues. Raise some issues the Republicans don't want raised.

Hey, it could happen!

George W. Bush: The LAST Republican President

It doesn't take a degree in political science to be able to see, quite clearly, that this is the begining of the end of the most corrupt, incompetent administration since the invention of dirt. Meanwhile, the GOP in the House and Senate are trying to distract our attention from the corruption of the executive and itself by screaming about gay marriage and flag burning and the "Death Tax". How pathetic. How gut-bustingly pathetic. Are you embarrased to be an American yet?

The GOP has to be destroyed. Utterly. Totally. They have slit the throats of the poor and middle class and must never, ever be allowed to govern this country again. The challenge of the next two and a half years is to make damned good and sure that George W. Bush is the very last republican president in American history. All conservatives, real conservatives need to regroup and form a new, more moderate party. You won't be able to call yourselves "republican" so don't even think about it. Next year at this time identifying oneself as a republican will be the equivilant of calling oneself an idiot. Besides, the leaders of that party, whether in the White House or the Congress are closer to fascism than conservatism. Besides, five years from now many of them, the president and vice president of the United States included, will be serving long prison terms.

In the months that follow the "Party of Lincoln" (Doesn't that term just make ya wanna giggle?) will do all it can do to rig the system further in the favor of the uber rich. They know damn well that the grand old party is over in November. Watch the damage they do between now and then.

Pray for peace.

let us not forget that the protection of the insurance companies is another of the Republican favorites. Just last month they again tried to pass legislation that would leave injured victims of medical malpractice virtually without a remedy. Senate bill 22, supported by 48 of the 55 Republicans, would have left brain-damaged children and disabled homemakers, victims of medical error, with a maximum possible recovery of approximately $75,000 for all of their trouble, which they say is enough. It's the same legislation that passed in Texas in 2003, at the behest of Bush's hand-picked successor to the governor's mansion. But let's be sure and exempt those with millions from an estate tax. The insurance executives, making tens of millions a year, get to pass it on to their kids, but the disabled and elderly become wards of the state, having to be cared for by Medicare and Medicaid. That's a smart use of taxpayer money. Michael Townes Watson, author of America's Tunnel Vision--How Insurance Companies' Propaganda Is Corrupting Medicine and Law. www.AmericasTunnelVision.com

Molly is much funnier than the Bushies and a whole lot better at making a list of what needs to be fixed. I don't think the Bushies even have a list of problems that need to be fixed because they just know that everything is going swimmingly. How could things not be good when the Bushies have created the Congress in fake elections and got them to rubber stamp all of their marvelous ideas? Or did God force the Bushies to do what they have done as a lesson to the people that wrong causes disaster?

End of an Era

Molly is again pointing out the obvious. Her righteous indignation notwithstanding, we're in the grip of an historic transition period, aided and abetted by 19th century American politics regurgitating in the 21str century. I'm getting that "creepy" feeling we won't be turning around this rotting, decadent ship of a police state. Roman Empire Redux?

Social Darwinism, the clever label spawned some decades ago to describe the imprint of natural selection on the social, economic and political life of the country, is once again raising its ugly mug. The behind-the-curtain reactionary forces of corporate money and Christian purity that put Bush&Cheney in power and kept them there through massive, sophisticated voting fraud (well documented in RFK Jr.'s recent "Rolling Stone" article) have one strategic objective in their group mind: the wholesale dismantling and historical repudiation of the FDR-inspired so-called welfare state.

Through a combination of topless tax cuts and wild deficit spending, already starving federal entitlement programs and state and local budgets, the Bush&Co. machine is effectively demonizing and crippling the shared concepts of "public tust", "common good" and "social justice", replacing them with the cold, hard greed and hypocrisy of "free market consumer capitalism" across the board. Add pervasive vote fraud and tech-driven control of the balletbox, and you've got the practical end of American "democracy" as we thought we knew it, replaced openly by the corporate oligarchy that's always been there in the shadows, waiting for the right time to clamp down. Is this that right time?

Most of what passes for debate or discourse today is a waste of keystrokes, because when you follow the money, there's an eventual path to the poorhouse for most ordinary Americans and their children. The rising cost of fossil fuels, the climb in interest rates coupled with a turgid economy (the 1970's saw rates pushing 20%?), the withdrawal of affluent post-WWII baby boomers into self-absorbed retirement behind gated golf communities around the country, taking with them billions of dollars in assets protected by GOP tax cuts.

Meanwhile, working Americans, many of whom have been propogandized into repudiating and voting against their own vital interests, will struggle on severely diminished or cancelled pensions, crippled 401(K)'s and shaky Social Security and Medicare benefits, vulnerable to the GOP sabotage that has been packaged as the "ownership society." Prices will climb, property values go down as interest rates rise, and consumer credit debt build to crushing proportions, wiping out already meager assets.

Not the typical Disneyesque fantasy many Americans covet. All of it compounded by the Iraq war and the middle east cauldron and the giant money sucking vacuum it has created, upwards of $275-300 billion and climbing into the next galaxy. A pernicious PR machine of fear and anxiety invoking terrorists in your city, your neighborhood, under your bed, in your shorts, along with 500-channel TV of which 490 broadcast 24/7 dumbed down drivel, all designed to distract from the Sodom-and-Gomorrah profligacy of this administration and its "friends", among them KBR, Halliburton, Exxon/Mobil, Lockheed Martin, and the monolithic southwestern prison industry, which is salivating over new billions to be pissed away on immigration jails modelled on Gitmo, once we "secure our borders" (yeah, right!)

So, we're looking at a rapid return to the Gilded Age of robber barons, flagrant environmental rape, third world wages, and a spike in poverty, accompanied by a dismantling of social legislation abetted by the hard-right Supremes. All this, and the informed voters (read:morons) of San Diego just voted another GOP hack into office to replace Duke Cunningham, the most corrupt dirtbag in House history. New Zealand lookin" good!

Hi Molly!
Republicans and right wing zealots need to be stroked. They need to believe they are seriously being listened to. The current bold initiative of jiggling keys for a smile from the infant Christian right is doing just that. I’m guessing they were offended because the administration didn’t have the nerve to lock up 10 million illegal Hispanics. I wonder why no one ever really listens to them?

If Molly thinks Hilllary is going to save us, she is more in left field than I thought.

Hillary is a slice and dicer, high priestess in the Illuminati.

If you think the Nazi NeoCONs are bad, just wait until the Commie New Agers get in. At least the Republicans have enough sense not to announce publicly that they want to reduce the human population down to 500 million. (ie. Ted Turner, the Georgia Guidestones, Al Gore, the enviromaniacs).

At least the Republican tyrants only want to make money. The Dems want to kill everybody and turn the earth into a park for the grizzley bears.

I was reading some of the comments bashing Ann Coulter. Unbelievable the filth and invective that lefties have. If this was a Republican site instead of a Democratic site, you wouldn't see that stuff.

Not that I support the neoCONs. I don't. I have bumper stickers that say 911 IS AN INSIDE JOB and OUR NATION IS IN DANGER.

Also

IMPEACH BUSH.

But I can see why God would just let the whole country revert to a pile of cinders if all we have to choose is Nazi neoCONs or blood-thirsty lefties who think it's cool to be evil.

Forcing the world into a 'value system' is the brilliant tactic of the current so called republicanism. It's 'federalism' atomizes us even further than we already are, until it begins to be worrisome even to refer to such a thing as "society". Trouble is, no so called value system can justify exploitation at 'the end of the day' as these folks like to say. What a dream! Inner city groups, unemployed, homeless, everyone sitting on a stoop somewhere discussing the nuances of belief-- nothing else to do, i guess!

NEW: Rules for marriage:
Posted by: greentime on Jun 7, 2006 5:47 PM
Current rating: Not yet rated    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
Here is the natural logical progression to outlawing Gay Marriage:

1. Marriage is a sacred commitment between an Man and a Woman, therefore, absolutely NO DIVORCE is permitted.

2. Marriage is a union blessed by God and ONLY for a Man and a Woman, therefore any offspring from that marriage must be fully supported until adulthood. All wages from both spouses must be pledged first and foremost to that end.

3. Since there can be no divorce, and marriage is also to ensure the continuation of the species, ONLY sexual activity conducted for the creation of offspring is allowed. Any sex act must lead to conception. Recreational sex must be a felony.

4. Any deviation from male behavior for men and female behavior for women is not permitted. Men may not express emotion and females must not display logic. To do otherwise, blurs the lines between male and female.

5. ALL men must commit to two years of military service prior to being married. This is the proof of maleness. Females must serve two years in the maternity ward of their local hospital.

6. Any males or females not married will be paired up by the government. Marriage is the only natural state and any single males or females will be required to marry and mate.

Sounds fun huh? -

Inasmuch as Bush has been in the process of dismantling the Constitution since Day 1, what would it mean to pass a Constitutional amendment banning gay marriage? Nothing.

If the Constitution now is "no more than a goddamned piece of paper!" as Bush has been overheard to scream, does that mean that the states can now abandon the "united" part of "USA" and become independent, self-governing entities?

I think democracy would be a lot more possible -- and manageable -- in smaller chunks. Might well be a lot less scary, too.

It’s comforting to know that the Republicans are not as good at research as we worry they are with their warrantless wiretaps and screening of our phone calls. For some reason, I—a person who has always been a registered Democrat and author of a novel highly critical of this administration—recently was named an Honorary Co-chaiman of the President’s Dinner in Washington on June 19, 2006. Because I am a small business owner, the Republicans assumed I was one of them so I was also invited to the NRCC Business Advisory Council and Annual Board Meeting.

For a mere $5,000 (plus travel and lodging), I could attend these events (which include the dinner with Mr. & Mrs. Bush, a town hall meeting, an NRCC board meeting, and a photo op), though for only $1,250 I could skip the dinner and still have my picture taken with important members of Congress.

J.E. Schwartz
author, Doublethink: A Tale of Unintended Consequences

Here is the HIGHLY CONFIDENTIAL fax they sent me:

I want to stress to you the critical and confidential nature of this correspondence. I respectfully ask that as an Honorary Chairman, you keep what I am about to tell you between the two of us.

The situation here at the committee is dire. We believe the recent polls showing the Democrats taking over Congress could be accurate. You read that right. Here’s why:

1. For the first time in recent memory, the Democrats have as much cash on hand as wee do. This is usually our “most potent weapon” — now that’s gone.

2. The daily attacks on President Bush by the Liberals and the media have taken their toll on the President—and Republicans. And they have managed to drive our approval rating to an all time low.

All this is ---- a “Perfect Liberal Storm” that could sweep Nancy Pelosi into the Speaker’s Ofice --- and set the stage for a Democrat (Hillary) in the White House in 2008.

Unless…

We can count on you – personally – and your fellow Chairmen to stand against this rising Liberal tide.

I’m asking you to do 2 things.

First, join me, The President and First Lady, Republican Members of Congress, and your fellow Chairmen on June 19th in Washington for the President’s Diner and Annual Board Meeting. Rearrange your schedule if you have to --- but please do everything you can to be there. The future of our Country and our Party literally hang in the balance. I am still holding your tickets for you.

Your support now – could be the only thing separating us from a Liberal Congress and –
• Repeal of the tax Cuts on your and your business
• Socialized Health Care
• Weaker stance on terrorism
• Impeachment of President Bush

I don’t want to wake up the morning after the election thinking I could have done more --- and I know you don’t either. I know you’ve been extremely supportive in the past, buit I’d consider it a personal favor to me.

Godspeed

Tom

(Congressman Tom Reynolds)
