TSA Secretly Snoops on Passengers

By Jim Hightower, AlterNet. Posted July 2, 2005.

If you flew in June of 2004 the Transportation Security Administration now has a file on you, amassing such passenger records as our names, phone numbers, and credit card info.

The Transportation Security Administration is the all-knowing, all-seeing federal agency in charge of taking our shoes off at airports, and our heroic leaders there have recently rooted out a treasure trove of invaluable data. Unfortuately, it's not information about some secret cell of terrorists--it's a trove of your and my personal information.

If you flew in June of 2004, TSA snoops now have a file on you--even though Congress specifically told them not to collect such data. Agency officials promised they wouldn't, but TSA secretly did it anyway, amassing such passenger records as our names, phone numbers, and credit card info.

Worse, TSA contracted the data tabulation to a private corporation, which used other databases to compile full profiles on us, including home addresses, spouses, and--BE VERY WORRIED--the exact latitude and longitude of our homes! There's a law against secret government databases, and TSA earlier pledged to congress that it would not store commercial data on air passengers--but there the info is, stored in TSA computers.

Not to worry, say the Bushites in charge, for this is just a test of a new ID verification system we're developing. Bad answer. Congress told the agency not to implement such a system until the Government Accountability Office gave its approval. The GAO has evaluated the system--and it gave TSA an F, noting that the ID program failed to meet nine out of the ten criteria that congress had set.

Well, picky, picky, say the Bushites. Even if we broke our promises, tried to go around the law, and failed to produce a passable system--hey, you can trust us with people's personal data because our ID system "is built on an airtight privacy platform."

This is Jim Hightower saying... Do we have "Sap" written on our foreheads? These people thumbed their noses at the congress, why would they let some bureaucratic privacy code stop them from ransacking our personal information? Far from trusted--they ought to be prosecuted.

Well, Jim, we let them get away with the 2000 A.D. election(anoinment) and the 2004 A.D. Deiboldt "Elecxtraviganza"!!! When we have people in the streets of D.C. protesting what will become one of his most outrageous crimes: Bushzis will pack the Supreme Court with fellow Bushzis and then repeal "Term Limitations". Then he won't have to worry about the pretense anymore and either will you or I for the length of our lives.

The Repugs are good at keeping things "off the books"

Since when has legality mattered to True Believers. The only issue is not getting caught.

Lest we forget. It was a previous Repug president who OK'd the establishment of a private army called the Contras to battle the legitimate military of Nicaragua. Reagan's boy Oliver North oversaw the skimming of profits from arms sales to Iran to finance that president's private war.

Congress had passed a law against such meddling in Central American politics, so it had to "go offshore."

North became an American hero who almost was elected a senator from Virginia. Reagan is still considered by many to be a great president. They were living out Barry Goldwater's motto that "extremism" can be justified; might makes right.

Bush openly agrees with that. He invades and occupies a sovereign nation for daring to defy us, and still he gets reelected. Americans admire the spirit of dictatorship!

Dear Jim Hightower . . .

This essay is great, eye opening, and sadly, not surprising! The comments of others are expansive! Do you each marvel, as I do? Americans seem to prefer apathy, blind faith, and, or acceptance; it baffles me! I thank each of you for sharing these thoughts!

Dear Mr. Hightower,

During your last flight, we missed a few crucial pieces of information. Could you forward us your shoe size? Our employees have forgotten to record it.

Thank you,

TSA

As a frequent flyer, Thanks that it mostly overseas on other airlines not of US affiliation. The Terrorist Soiety of America (TSA) is a bunch of thugs and thieves, women and children molesters. In Guam they are the biggest thieves inthe world. every time I fly their and through there, I have to send my tools and parts ahead because they STEAL what they want. Then when I get to Japan I find it missing. I contact TSA and they threaten me with prosecution for their thievery. They are pathetic and corrupt as hell. DUMB also is another label since they are poverty minimium wage garbage found in alleys and trash bins. They have no regard for the laws and our elected leaders. these are the Puppets of the Nazi regime of W and compny

The credit card companies already have this information. I'm more afraid of them. The paranoia here is amazing. Seek some counselling.

Did you specifically say June of 2004?

This represents the kind of fearmongering that is so common with the liberal mindset. Oh, we live under fascism is the overriding lament.

First off, this article is written to sound like this is an ongoing process. I almost didn't catch the part of the title that says in June of 2004, not since June of 2004. I believe that was intentional that I would miss it. It must be because the only time they did it was in June 2004. Was it for the whole month, a week, a day? Or perhaps there was an isolated incident. It's like during the election in 2004 when the Republicans were accused of limiting attendance to the rallies strictly to staunch supporters and the intimidating of voters by republican goon squads.

I got so up under my cuff about that that I actually spent 2 days during the early voting driving from one polling place to another in my county hunting them. And guess what? Bogeymen. The pole workers were aghast that I was actually asking about it. They said the poles had been quiet and peaceful.

The other example was the accusations that only the staunch supporters could get tickets. So when I found out there was a rally in my area for Bush, I called about tickets. I specifically asked the guy ahead of time were there any party affiliation requirements. His response was, are you kidding, how can we reach out if we only give them within the party. So I took the most liberal friend I could find and we went down and got tickets. All we had to do was sign our name. Yeah, catering to the party loyal allright.

This sounds like an attempt to generate fear based on a single incident.
