Doctor Refuses to Treat Same-Sex Couple's 6-Day-Old Baby

"Religious freedom" run amok.

A flurry of state lawmakers are trying to pass “religious freedom” legislation that they say is necessary to stop the government from infringing on religious rights – but which would have the added effect of allowing businesses to discriminate.

In Michigan, we're seeing exactly where this kind of ideology leads.

A married lesbian couple, Krista and Jami Contreras, wanted to take their baby Bay to a checkup at Eastlake Pediatrics in Roseville, Michigan. When they arrived at the medical facility, they were told that the doctor they had planned to see didn't even come to the office that day – she “had prayed on it, and she won't be able to care for” their baby.

"It was embarrassing, it was humiliating and here we are, new parents trying to protect her," said Jami Contreras. "And we know this happens in the world and we're completely prepared for this to happen other places. But not at our six-day-old's wellness appointment."

Michigan has no law preventing discrimination against LGBT individuals – although it should be  pointed out that Bay, who's just a few months old today, isn't even old enough to have a sexual orientation.
