Oil Tycoon: Our Troops Died ... We're "Entitled" to Sweet Contracts in Iraq!

After all that, it looks like the Iraqis are cutting some big deals to develop their massive oil wealth -- but with the mushy Europeans and the damn Chi-coms!

Iraq's Oil Minister Hussain al-Shahristani told a Washington conference on Wednesday that his government was happy with the energy auction it held earlier this year. The auction was the first chance for foreign oil firms to compete for Iraqi oil since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

BP and the Chinese oil company CNPC were the only firms to win a contract in Iraq's bid round this summer, the first chance for foreign oil firms to compete for Iraqi oil since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003. Seven other oil and gas fields failed to attract bidders on the terms Iraq offered.

But a consortium headed by Italy's ENI (ENI.MI: Quote, Profile, Research) said last week it signed a deal to develop the giant Zubair field for a remuneration fee of $2 a barrel. At Iraq's oilfield auction in June, the consortium refused to go below $4.40 a barrel.

Another consortium headed by Exxon is still in the running for one project, but that doesn't mollify hedge-fund gazillionaire -- and natural gas honcho -- T-Boone Pickens. He's none-too-happy:

Oil tycoon T. Boone Pickens told Congress on Wednesday that U.S. energy companies are "entitled" to some of Iraq's crude because of the large number of American troops that lost their lives fighting in the country and the U.S. taxpayer money spent in Iraq.

[...]

"They're opening them (oil fields) up to other companies all over the world ... We're entitled to it," Pickens said of Iraq's oil. "Heck, we even lost 5,000 of our people, 65,000 injured and a trillion, five hundred billion dollars."

[...]

"We leave there with the Chinese getting the oil," Pickens said.

Nothing new -- In August T-Boone called on the administration to "demand" oil contracts from Iraq before considering a withdrawal ($$). But it is an unusually brazen admission that many energy bigs did in fact consider "blood-for-oil" to be a straightforward deal.

While I discount mono-causal explanations for why we went to war, access to Iraq's oil -- or depriving our rivals of that access -- was a prime reason for the invasion, and (as I wrote here and here), Big Oil's machinations did much to bring it about.

And what has always struck me about this proposition is how bizarre that kind of mercantilism is in a globalized world. After all, what is an "American" energy company anyway? These giants may be headquartered in the U.S. (where they get all sorts of sweet tax breaks), and their top management may be American -- folks like T-Boone Pickens. A majority of their profits may end up in Americans' accounts, but at the end of the day they're multinationals owned by investors from around the world.

So, let's look more closely at T-Boone's premise that "we're" entitled to Iraq's oil because "we" paid a dear price in blood and treasure to "liberate" it.

Most Americans won't gain a thing if Iraq's oil is firmly in the hand of "American" oil companies-- it's a global energy market and whether a barrel of oil is controlled by Exxon or Lukoil doesn't impact its price on that market. A relatively small number of Americans would benefit -- Big Oil's employees, shareholders and the employees and shareholders down its U.S.-based supply chain.

A relatively small number of Americans have paid a huge price in Iraq directly. Not just the 4,300 killed or 31,500 physically wounded, but the entire million-plus who have served there at one point or another.

So a small group would make (sometimes) huge gains if "we" had the loot, and another small group would have paid a huge direct price for those gains. But all of us who pay taxes are picking up a huge tab -- a loss of national treasure that will be staggering by the time the last disabled vet is laid to rest decades from now.

And of course the ultimate price for the gains of T-Boone and his oil buddies will have been paid by the Iraqis -- millions of them have been killed, internally displaced or sent fleeing to other countries to live as refugees and all of them continue to live under the weight of constant civil conflict.

That's how the winners and losers shake out. And when you think about it that way Pickens' whining is simply shameless.

Digg!

Who the hell do those raghead MF's think they are selling THEIR oil to whomever they please. Those MF's better read up on "AMERICAN STYLE CAPITALISM.

See "AMERICAN STYLE CAPITALISM" is where poor people (used to call em slaves but some liberal pussies fucked that up)DO ALL THE WORK, FIGHT ALL THE WARS, HAVE ALL THE NIGRA (Scuse me po) BABIES and the RICH give them a little something for their trouble. About 400 times less than our RICH benefactors see fit to reward themselves with, but you better shush and be a good zombi.

The Reverend Wright was 100% correct when he said GODDAMN America, as he would, if he existed that is. Have a nice day.

American taxpayers pay in blood and money so people like Pickens can get rich. Given the enormous gulf between what workers and execs make, it stands to reason that only a small amount of money "Invested" in Iraq will actually make it into the pockets real people, How much of that 1 Trillion we spent in Iraq will actually come back into the American economy? Does that seem worth it? Even worse, we've diverted capital away from vastly more productive enterprises, such as fixing roads and schools to fund this militarism.

Fuckwads like Pickens are entitled to squat until they pay their fair share in taxes, and their kids fight in Iraq like everyone else's.

What's completely amazing is that few in the feckless mainstream media ever question statements like that from Pickens, but will be happy to trumpet any right wing whore-son that complains about "socialized medicine".

What a fucking crock

Thanks for publishing stuff like this Josh-it makes me mad as hell, but at least I know the score better now.

an estimated $120 billion in yearly costs from early deaths and health damages to thousands of Americans from the use of fossil fuels

Report looks at hidden health costs of energy production

The report says nuclear energy produces low damages under normal conditions but that the nuclear waste issue needs more study before any estimate can be made.

The 'nuclear waste issue' is another reason they have for war. A sick, secret reason. Don't believe me? Look it up yourself. It is why they went after me.

Tear away

Other than the fact that it's a gross violation of the Geneva Conventions (and by extension, US law) to invade a country for its resources, by T-Boone's logic, the oil "rights" should belong to the soldiers and their families or, more broadly, to the people who paid for the illegal US invasion, the US taxpayer. Both of these notions are patently absurd. The oil in Iraq belongs to the people of Iraq, plain and simple.

Beyond absurd, it's completely insane bordering on criminal to claim that some private, for profit US corporation has any "rights" to Iraqi oil (in fact, no corporation should have any rights whatsoever in any context).

Someone please strap a helmet on T-Boone and put a rifle in his hand and let him go get the oil in Iraq by himself.

What a selfish a-hole!

Taking issue with the sentence, "A majority of their profits may end up in Americans' accounts..."

For the sake of accuracy, enhance to: "A majority of their profits may end up in Americans' accounts in Lichtenstein, Switzerland, Panama, etc."

Other than that, great article Josh.

is just another rich out of touch multi-Billionaire who hasn't paid for any of that Iraqi oil with anything. He thinks it should be handed to him and other American corporations. Get our troops out of those countries and let the oil companies from what ever country they come from, pay for there own security. They make bundles of money and they can pay for security themselves. I wonder if T. Pickens is one of the oil companies that under Bush/Cheney did not pay on there oil leases here in the states. If they do not pay up, they loose the lease. All this is a bunch of corporate welfare. This continual warring for profit, is more corporate welfare. Destroy the American economy so they can take over and have there "New World Order."

we got the Panama Canal, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and probably a half a dozen others that I just don't have on the tip of my tongue. I thought every body understood. There is an election coming up. They guys that just received leases just may not have them after the election. Our guys are waiting until after the election. You don't think that they were holding the door for somebody else? What did you think? Did you think that they were being politely hesitant?

There are an estimated 11,000 wells to be drilled. Its so sad. Global warming may well force them to leave them undrilled or abandoned. I am told that if they can find the right formations they can make "sequestration" work. But I have seen "water flooding" break through to the surface. "Water flood" may be seen as a device to force difficult oil sand to produce but it has an unspoken backside. More times than not the well is producing a lot of water and a little oil. The disposal well then is a "sequestration" for salt water.

The point is that until successful working sequestration happens on a large scale carbon based energy is dead in the water. This is going to include the carbon in Mr. T. Boone's beloved natural gas. Its going to be a time before we can escape the combustion of carbon in air. But it must happen.

All of this said we still have the problem of "foreign oil". In a time of war the import of oil may well become impossible. We did provide that little service for Adolf Hitler. This time it is "us" that it is happening to. Its not so funny when the shoe is on the other foot. T. Boone's natural gas is locally produced. You don't have to like T. Boone. But you do need his natural gas. We do need to think seriously about letting the Arabs drink their oil.

...we went into Iraq, in 2003?

I thought that we went in to "Liberate" the Iraqi citizens from SADDAM, according to W, the dickwad who polluted the White House with his stolen presidency for the past 8 years!

And the reason that we finally saw fit to "liberate" the Iraqis from SADDAM, was that it was SADDAM who had committed 9/11--not W's slimy Saudi oil-buddy friends who (including bin Laden) were always guests at the Bush family table!

I always understood 9/11 to have been a SAUDI operation. But people in this country have a nasty tendency to be as dumb as a sackful of clams; as in (when I complained that we were bombing THE WRONG COUNTRY in '03)--

"Yeah, yeah, so WHAT? We'll get 'em (the Saudis) next!"

The sight of my people screaming for THE WRONG BLOOD after 9/11, so dispirited me that I shut up for the duration. Now, here's T. Boone to set the record straight at long last.

The Iraqis (he says) who we invaded on a spurious lie by Bush/Cheney, were never really the target--the Kirkuk oilfields were. BUT since those oilfields spread from Kurdistan into Iraq proper, there was the real reason we wanted to grab them.

See, Rumalia--the Saudi oilfield--that had been nourishing Western civilization for decades--was beginning to run a tad low. It was only half the size that it had been in the first days of OPEC--and the Chinese were coming on line. The Saudis?

They would be content with running the world's SEAPORTS--a task that, for the past 100 years, had fallen to the Brits, whose term for running said ports, was up in 2003. (Coinkydink, anyone?)

But as soon as the rest of America learned who had actually bombed the Twin Towers on 9/11--that 15 of the 20 hijackers had been (as was their boss and Bush good buddy Osama bin Laden) in fact, SAUDIS--that was when war fever began to die down--and, just in time, the American people refused to sign off on allowing Saudi domination of the world's ports.

So the Saudis, who had dreamed of running the world's ports (instead of their oilfields which were running out) had to content themselves with ONE port--and that's the playground known as Dubai Ports World. That would have been one of the ports only. Now, it's the only one.

Oh yeah, we were in Iraq completely and solely for the "awl", T. Boone. Enough of us knew it and especially the Kurds and Iraqis knew it, to shortstop America by giving its "awl" contracts from the Kirkuk, to every country in the world, from Italy to India to Greece and wherever else--BEFORE the Americans could pull out of Iraq and claim what you, T. Boone, consider "our fair share, cause our soljers dahd for it."

Except that's NOT what our soldiers died for. They died because they believed those two POS slicked-back liars in the White House, Bush and Cheney, who told Americans on American TV, that SADDAM HAD COMMITTED THE 9/11 ATROCITY. THAT'S what American boys bled for. They didn't bleed for no "awl", T. Boone.

The only reason you're so pissed off, is that you don't see yourself collecting any of that "awl" that our young people actually DID die for, you gross pig.
