Neocon Insanity: Abrams Says Iranians Would Be Fine with an Attack on Their Country

This afternoon, Elliott Abrams, Deputy National Security Adviser under President Bush, appeared on Fox News to discuss U.S. policy towards Iran. Abrams pled guilty to misleading Congress about the Iran-Contra scandal under Reagan and handled Iran policy under Bush.

When asked if any recent President has had “a successful strategy with Iran,” Abrams implicitly admitted his own decades-long failure. “No, I don’t think we’ve really had any successful strategies with Iran,” Abrams responded. “And you know, meanwhile they’ve been building up their nuclear program and missile program.” But Obama recently established the first high-level diplomatic engagement with Iran in 30 years, which produced results quicker than expected.

But Abrams, “the neocon’s neocon,” still clings to his long-running desire to bomb Iran. And to justify his view that military action against Iran is the prudent course, Abram told Fox News that the Iranian people would accept it:

FOX: 59 percent of respondents to our Fox News poll say that force should be used. How would Tehran react to that?

ABRAMS: It’s a very big question, Alisyn. My own view is that most Iranians now — after June, after the stealing of the election — would not rally around the flag. People used to say that — that if there’s an attack on Iran, you know the population is going to get patriotic. But that’s what Americans would do. I don’t know that it’s what Iranians are going to do, considering the way that regime is hated in Iran.

Watch it:

Certainly, the Iranian regime does have a great deal of opposition on the ground. But that doesn’t mean they would accept bombs falling on their country. For an Iranian populace that has previously expressed concern that the U.S. is trying to humiliate them, Abrams comments aren’t very reassuring.

A new poll of the Iranian people demonstrates a great potential for the diplomatic engagement that Obama is pursuing. World Public Opinion find that “two-thirds of Iranians would favor their government precluding the development of nuclear weapons in exchange for the lifting of international sanctions against Iran.” 60 percent of the Iranian public favors “full, unconditional negotiations” between their government and the United States.

Digg!

The quickest way into a person's heart...

is, of course, to bomb their family.

Any attack INEVITABLY will kill civilians. Not only Iranians will hate the US if we try something that stupid. (And I am far from certain that Obama isn't listing to the Neocons' advice.)

they have NEVER EVEN CONSIDERED the rank Nationalism of the countries we have chosen to invade and occupy.

Iran would be the same, but ratcheted up a few notches. The Iranian leadership and the Iranian people agree on very little politically. But the ONE thing that unites them is their fierce Nationalism. Especially considering the history of the US role in the overthrow of Mossadegh in order to install the Shah. That has left a nasty taste in the mouths of ALL Iranians, despite their political views.

Anyone associated with the debacles of Iraq and Afghanistan where they got absolutely EVERYTHING wrong, shouldn't even get to speak on the subject of any future wars! Especially considering that the last eight years has meant nothing but threats and insults towards Iran, as POLICY.

Idiots! Absolute idiots!

What is truly amazing about all these Neo Cons is that they are spouting this same crap at the very time when the first face to face diplomatic efforts have produced Concrete results .Charles Krauthammner was today talking about the need for force even as Iran agreed to let inspectors in . Of course that didn't help Saddam : in fact Bush lied about Iraq refusing to let inspectors in when it was WE who told them to leave . We warned them that we could not guarantee their safety

The other thing I've noticed is most of these guys have NO problem with Israel having hundreds of Atomic Weapons We are told of the special relationship between the USA and Israel. I guess that doesn't include Israel's attack on the USS Liberty which produced not only casualties but deaths . The crew was forbidden to give interviews . The official Israeli line was it was a mistake that they didn't KNOW the ship was a US naval vessel . Unfortunately there are recordings of the pilots specifically saying that it was an American Ship and questioning their controllers
about that . They were told to attack anyway .

Want a nice silk potted plaint?

May I suggest, CANNIBIS SATIVA SERICEOUS? Or, for lower quality plus attitude Silk Marijuana Plants A necessary Visual Aid for All Drug Awareness Programs.

Looks like the real thing... teaching is easier.

Those who use our marijuana silk plants successfully are law enforcement agencies, elementary, middle and high schools, community center outreach programs, church youth groups ...all avenues of those trying to educate about marijuana.

Educate?

Or indoctrinate?

It's time for a War tax. If this country is at war...now and in the future...a war tax should automatically be instituted, immediately. How about an additional 2% for everyone, EXCEPT our soldiers who actually go to war. That way our children don't have to pay off the debts caused by the folly of our leaders. Pass that law, and watch the rich and powerful think a little longer before salivating over the spoils of war. And why not make the tax 2% for each country we attack? Let's see, we'd already be up to 4%...who wants to try for 6%?

This man does not pay much attention to the way war is fought.

To unpack his statement a bit... he assumes that Iranians would not be bothered if their country were attacked, but this assumes a lack of civilian casualties, because that is what is truly intolerable to any populace. This, of course, is not what EVER happens in war. WE, the aggressors may choose to write those deaths off as the price that must be payed or as unfortunate but unavoidable, but no civilian population will EVER think that way about their own dead, specifically, I believe, because it could just as easily be themselves or their loved ones including their children who are those unavoidable but unfortunate deaths.

Some want to pretend we can make war a clean and efficient process, especially with new technologies, but the truth is that this simply does not happen. Sure, we may not miss the building we are trying to hit... but what of the buildings around it? What of those who happen to be passing by?

The inherent assumption by this ass is utterly ludicrous, even more ludicrous than what he actually said.

Hallelujah! Oh Lord have mercy - the retards know not what inflicts them now.

So it isn't enough that your filthy empire is dying in AF-PAK and Iraq; your economy is in steady decline; no prospects of job growth; real employment hovering around 17% etc etc etc...

You need yet another war? WOW!

You know, just like what happened in Iraq and Afghanistan. Pelting the invaders with roses and whatnot.

Let's be clear, nobody likes an invader and foreign occupation. The likely result of invading Iran would be people closing ranks and choosing to ignore the regime's shortcomings.

It seems though that Iran learned a lesson well. Increase military and more AA missiles, are the only way to discourage US imperialism. Make it potentially costly, bloody and hard and neocolonial bullies will soon lost the taste for it.

while working on a documentary in nicaragua, we visited hospitals where the majority of patient were mostly teenagers and younger, who had lost limbs as "collateral damage" during the us backed war of the contras. abrams was up to his eyeballs in that and i wish he could have the nightmares of the carnage that he facilitated.

"Danger: Risk of BioHazard!" This man is only appearing on FOX News because it is the only place that this kind of yellow journalism can occur. His insanity is both dangerous and contagious, unfortunately. It will infect a vast majority of right-wing individuals with their own agendas, and it lends credence and support to the likes of Palin and the Becks of this world. Unfortunately, it also drives those people in Congress and the White House who put us into the mess in Iraq and Afghanistan as well.

It is time to clean house, AMERICA! It is time to make it a place where people like Abrams will be looked at and laughed off as crazy because Americans no longer invade other nations based on rhetoric and lies. It is time to send a message to DC and to military profiteers that this will end, and it will end NOW!

Join me in DC on November 3rd! Organize work stoppages across this nation to send a message to military corporations - to all corporations - that we will not longer support their interference in our government's policies for their profit and our loss of life! Send a message to the world - WE ARE TAKING BACK OUR GOVERNMENT BECAUSE WE ARE AMERICA AND WE WILL BE HEARD!

For details on what you can do, please go to my website at Let Freedom Ring.Community

The operative word in the name is COMMUNITY. We are a national Community and we need to come together once again and make our voices heard! Join Me! Let America Roar! Let Freedom Ring again in this land!

...I know people who hate the Federal Government, hate big banks, hate Wall Street traders, hate New York City, but after Sept. 11, 2001, they were all ready to go get those guys who did this to "us." Is it so hard for an Eastern Ivy League lawyer/intellectual/bureaucrat steeped in Neocon rhetoric to understand that it's human nature that when a nation is attacked, internal divisions disappear, the attack itself is the most unifying force in Nature and the people will unite and respond to the attackers in kind, no matter how "pure and just" the attackers' intentions?

8 years ago, we had an attack on this country. I was among quite a few that did not support Shrub or any of his policies, and believed his election was stolen, yet we were told to stand by him, and in large part we did. Contrary to this, warmongers like Abrams would have you believe that other populations would not do the same. I have to wonder if conservatives such as Abrams believe that nationalism among Americans is stronger than that of Iranians or others, and whether that comes from some deep-seated feelings of racial superiority.
