Take Action This Weekend: Urge Congress to Vote "No" on the War Supplemental

Want to know what 21,000 more US troops and $96.7 billion more in wartime spending will go toward?  Gen. Petraeus says insurgent attacks in Afghanistan are at their highest level since 2001; there were 400 attacks in the last week alone.  Both Generals Petraeus and McChrystal expressed the desire to keep civilian casualties to a minimum, but how can they possibly achieve that lofty goal with more troops on the ground?  It stands to reason that more troops will mean more incidents of violence, increasing calls for more US airstrikes, which in turn will mean more civilian casualties.

Fortunately, there's a chance to defeat the war supplemental and you can even take action this weekend.  Here's what FireDogLake's Jane Hamsher recommends:

There won’t be anyone to pick up the phone at congressional offices this weekend, but you can write letters to the editor in time for the Sunday edition, urging members of Congress to vote against the Supplemental Appropriations Act.

Rahm Emanuel is threatening Democratic freshmen if they don’t vote for the bill.  We need 39 Democratic votes to defeat it.  Already 32 have committed to oppose it.  Please write your local paper and urge them to support your member of Congress in voting against the supplemental.  (If you don’t know who your member of Congress is, you can look them up here.)

Write letters to the Editor and say “no” to the supplemental

We regret to inform you that under no circumstances is amerika to change any one of the spots on it's coat because we the rest of the knowing world understand that it is the amerikan way to invent, expand, and then contract..(lose)..to a foriegn body so as to make the amerikan economy revolve.

Cheap comment it is not.

i said it on Alternet a long time ago....

Never in the field of human conflict as so few killed so many for supposedly owing so much to so few...

Yes my words altered from Winnie

Lets project shall we and say that in five years time amerkans will once again leave a country shattered but not humbled...you know. Just like the Iraq and the rest.

and still be ignored... but did send off scathing emails to voice my discontent... don't expect anything to change...

ps... our local newspaper is now out of business, next closest paper doesn't have an open editorial or blog site... local newscasts aren't interested unless it is locally bloody and violent...

There is and will be intense debate over a "public option" being a part of any health care reform. As usual, the rethugs will scream "howya gonna pay for it?", as if they worry about that when they're trying to shove some poison down our throats like the misadventures in Iraq and Afghanistan. Where's THAT money coming from? Who actually benefits from those illegal and brutal occupations? The ten billion dollars a month we're pissing away on two phony wars could easily pay for single-payer universal health care AND a complete revamping of our public education systems.
One would thing most decent citizens would prefer good health care and education over endless, unwinable wars, beneficial only to the crooks profiting from them.
Our fearless leaders need to know we're not buying the "defense of freedom" and "war on terror" lies any more. We've got too many problems at home to solve, for us to be squandering our national treasure, and the lives of our military personnel on LIES.
Our priorities need to be re-arranged in favor of what's moral and RIGHT.

It should be noted that more boots on the ground is precisely the way you reduce civilian casualties due to aerial bombardment. Spend the lives of soldiers instead of the lives of innocent civilians; that is the proper way to fight a proper war. The problem is, this is not a proper war; it is a war of aggression. Consequently, soldiers will kill civilians, air strikes or no. The problem is with the war, not the tactics.

to Savannah destroying everything to bring the south to its knees and surrender. Germany was nearly destroyed and Japan would have been a radioactive wasteland if there had been more bombs and no surrender. 1945 was the last time the losers in the pentagon knew how to fight a war. War is the absolute destruction of the enemy or unconditional surrender. Many of you will think "What about war crimes?". War in and of itself is a crime to top all crimes. The winner is never prosecuted for war crimes only the losers. Unless one is willing to prosecute a war to the utmost of ability, don't start. Unless one is prepared to expend all treasure and personnel to win, don't start. George Orwell would have liked the term "Limited war". Total bullshit to think war is limited. The war on terror is a looser. The terrorists have their terms and the attacked have theirs and the terms are never equal. The redcoats marched down the center of the road and were picked off one by one by freedom fighters/terrorists behind trees and rock walls. Humvees drive down the center of the road and are picked off by IEDs. Not a whole lot of difference. Terrorists must by fought on their level or don't start. You will lose. Viet Nam was a graduate course in guerilla fighting (I know, I was there) but the pentagon wasn't taking notes and failed the course. So far they have failed in Iraq and Afghanistan and they want more of the same. Stupidity at the officer level must be learned pay grade by pay grade 'cause they keep getting dumber and dumber. At this point who is dumber, officers or politicians? I don't know, it's a coin toss.

So your candidate of "change" you yahoos voted for is now a candidate for war. He told you all through the election he was going to increase troops in Afghanistan but you didn't listen, and voted this demothug into office. I guess because he claimed he was against the war in Iraq, (even though he was a state representative at the time and had little knowledge of what was really going on in Washington DC). He used his anti war claim against Hillary over and over again. Yet he continued to call for an increase in Afghanistan. And now you same guys that voted and cheered him on, are crying about his policies. My favorite part of the article is, "Rahm Emanuel is threatening Democratic freshmen if they don’t vote for the bill." Thugs!!! You voted a bunch of thugs into the White House and now you are whining that they play to hard. Stupid uninformed electorate. Did you not listen to anything that was said during the election???? Don't you understand Obama needs this war, and it is stupid to continue it...
All I can conclude is you got you what you voted for, so now deal with it. I hope you screwballs give Obama the same treatment you gave the Bushites, because in reality it is same animal.
