Obama Has 250,000 'Contractors' Deployed in Iraq and Afghanistan and is Increasing the Use of Mercenaries

A couple of years ago, Blackwater executive Joseph Schmitz seemed to see a silver lining for mercenary companies with the prospect of US forces being withdrawn or reduced in Iraq. “There is a scenario where we could as a government, the United States, could pull back the military footprint,” Schmitz said. “And there would then be more of a need for private contractors to go in.”

When it comes to armed contractors, it seems that Schmitz was right.
According to new statistics released by the Pentagon, with Barack Obama as commander in chief, there has been a 23% increase in the number of “Private Security Contractors” working for the Department of Defense in Iraq in the second quarter of 2009 and a 29% increase in Afghanistan, which “correlates to the build up of forces” in the country. These numbers relate explicitly to DoD security contractors. Companies like Blackwater and its successor Triple Canopy work on State Department contracts and it is unclear if these contractors are included in the over-all statistics. This means, the number of individual “security” contractors could be quite higher, as could the scope of their expansion.

Overall, contractors (armed and unarmed) now make up approximately 50% of  the “total force in Centcom AOR [Area of Responsibility].” This means there are a whopping 242,657 contractors working on these two U.S. wars. These statistics come from two reports just released by Gary J. Motsek, the Assistant Deputy Under Secretary of Defense (Program Support): “Contractor Support of U.S. Operations in USCENTCOM AOR, IRAQ, and Afghanistan and “Operational Contract Support, ‘State of the Union.’”

“We expect similar dependence on contractors in future contingency operations,” according to the contractor “State of the Union.” It notes that the deployment size of both military personnel and DoD civilians are “fixed by law,” but points out that the number of contractors is “size unfixed,” meaning there is virtually no limit (other than funds) to the number of contractors that can be deployed in the war zone.
At present there are 132,610 in Iraq and 68,197 in Afghanistan. The report notes that while the deployment of security contractors in Iraq is increasing, there was an 11% decrease in overall contractors in Iraq from the first quarter of 2009 due to the “ongoing efforts to reduce the contractor footprint in Iraq.”

Both Pentagon reports can be downloaded here.

This is the real Obama and the real Democratic Party. They have complete control of the government and absolutely nothing to be afraid of: the Republicans are down to 22% and a laughingstock.

So how's that "lesser evil" strategy working out for you?

Let's give them something to be afraid of:

So we have to pay the contractors big bucks. No one on any side of these wars is fighting for a 'cause'. They are all being paid specifically to fight and kill. There is no loyalty or patriotism involved. It's all for profit. The Taliban are mostly volunteer. Young and vicious with no fear of death. It's impossible to have a plan. It just goes on and on. Glorified street fighting. Newsflash: we can't afford it. ANNA

132,610 + 68,197 = 200,807.

Perhaps the figure of "a whopping 242,657 contractors working on these two U.S. wars" came from the number of troops reportedly deployed ("approximately 50% of the 'total force in Centcom AOR...'"). That's a discrepancy of 41,850 people, or about 1/6th of that estimated troop count.

Presumably the 250,000 referred to in the headline came from rounding up that 242K figure. But it's all way too sloppy for such a serious issue.

Jeremy: The corporations are tonning it.........and that is why we don't get the truth about 9/11!

Current rating: 3    [1 = poor; 5 = excellent]
The corporations are having a heyday in Iraq and Afghanistan, supporting the huge war and occupation infrastructure. In fact, they were excited from the beginning about the prospects of profit when we started our War on Terror.
And when you think about it, along with radical Israel supporters, that is just the kind of people who made up the Neocons and affiliates..........big international banking and corporate power people.........and that make up the "Bilderbergs".

And these are also the people who own our media corporations. They are also the money behind the big foundations that support "independent" media, like Alternet and Democracy Now!

And that is why, Jeremy, Democracy Now! and CommonDreams and Alternet have joined the msm in the censorship of 9/11, the mother of the War on Terror. Behind those foundations are the leaders of the Kissinger type world of international banking, military tied in corporations, big oil, and Zionism, all the beneficiaries of these wars. These people control us by controlling the media. They control you, Jeremy. You are on a leash, and you can go only so far......and that is just short of bringing us the truth of 9/11.

There is overwhelming evidence that the official story of 9/11 is a fairytale. It is probably the biggest story of all time. ROCK SOLID evidence........the contradictions, implausibilities, impossibilities, of the stories we were told about 9/11. The real truth is the complicity of our own government. But the press, both the msm and the alternative media, refuse completely to even mention any of it. They have their orders.

Jeremy, you are such a good investigator, and you get at the heart of issues. I know you could do a great job exposing the lies of 9/11. You would change the world. You have a big following, and so many progressives, still completely ignornant of the truth of 9/11, would immediately wakeup and see the light if the truth came from you. It would bring on the critical mass we need to get the media to finally expose 9/11 truth.

Please consider doing the responsible and honest thing: our future truly depends on it. Without the truth, we are doomed.

Getty is right. Thats the truth of it. The cause of it. The reason for it. 911. inside job. the big snow job.
The bases still being built. This aggressive killing war . a slaughter. A resource grab. an influence grab. all predicated on the most flagrant crime ever perpetrated and the control is everywhere. If ONE mainstream commentator balled up and came out with it, things might change. But mums the word. The biggest lie of our lifetimes and we are living in it and watching it grow like a cancer on the earth., while 'journalists' get told to stay in the hotel.

Please familiarize yourself with this document:

http://www.whitehouse.gov/omb/budget
/fy2009/summarytables.html

THe document gives great summarization to our plight. Look where the money is going and what is being cut. I rest my case.

When you think you're on one team, you'll excuse your teammates for bad behavior, this is what we've done over and over with Obama. We've fought like hell to get rid of Bush but what we've gotten instead is an increase in more of the same (see the budget for proof positive). We need to start a new party, that of the populists and forget the old Republican party and the newly infiltrated and subordinated Democratic party turned Corporate Party. Don't give these other parties any donations, don't go to their events, don't believe the bullshit that they tell you in the MSM. We might as well be in 1984 because it sure in the hell feels like it.

The more things change the more they stay the same.

Withdraw the troops; increase the mercs. The mercs are volunteers (and higher paid/cost) so that's ok? Their body counts (theirs and ours) are not reported so that's OK?

This is a gentler version of the ends justify the means. The idea being we will blitz the enemy with lots of fighting and be heroes when we win.

Unfortunately the only way a government will maintain its control over a population that hates us for all the previous violence will be to be become a dictatorship.

Look at how we have helped Iraq. We won't even take a significant number of refugees. Refugees from the illegal war we started.

That ends justify the means is the philosophy that got Bush/Cheney into trouble.

Obama is not telling us and his budget will not show merc expense, so that's OK?

For a man that obviously wants to be well thought of, who wants to be remembered as a unique leader, and who wanted to be a president in the vein of Lincoln, he sure has rapidly lost his roadmap. I believe Obama is a good man that wants to do right.

Unfortunately he is an intellectual and a relatively young man that is being overwhelmed by events and getting bad advice.

He is soon going to be thought of more like Moses and his followers, wandering 40 years in the desert. Afghanistan/ Pakistan desert that is. Soon the US citizens and the world are going to be asking Obama if he read any of the history of the Russian invasion of this area.

Next thing will be some of these secrets will come out and he will say I didn't do it I inherited it all. Unfortunately we know he inherited it, but he campaigned on fixing it.

Just who do you think is going to install phone lines, build infrastructure and fight fires? That's right, non military contractors. Army grunts are for doing grunt work and we don't even have enough of them for that, which is why there are so many private security contractors as well. As long as we're going to be in-country, we need the contractors. That we shouldn't be there is a whole other story.

Contractors does not equal Private security firms (mercenaries)

Basically not all contractors are BlackWater(now Xe) or Triple Canopy. They are not all private security firms, in other words. Some contractors are local Afghani’s or Iraqi’s hired to cook, or fix Air conditioners, or private security on large bases. Contracting allows the US government to hire, employ and grow relationships with the people we are trying to help. Regardless of your opinion of the war, this brings money into the economy

I am against military contractors (mercenaries) and found this article researching a blog post on them. I just think we should present an accurate picture. (http://www.onviolence.com/?e=17)
